guys i just realized something, there is no proof that azula was actually enjoying zuko’s agni kai against their father.

iroh was the one storytelling, and we saw his own flashback, he had his eyes closed so all we’re seeing is what he assumed their reactions were. we all know iroh doesn’t think many good things about azula (if u wanna speak about the lu ten thing, look for the post where i talk about all that under the “jinta’s take on azula” tag).

obviously azula wouldn’t show horror at the scene, she’s nothing if not extremely intelligent, and by showing any form of displeasure at her father actions she would’ve risked her own safety too. but i really doubt she was doing that evil smirk we saw, even less at age 11.

i’m aware that she wasn’t the kindest sister, but even if she tried to hide it with taunting because of that need to never show “weakness”, if she didn’t care about zuko’s safety she wouldn’t have told him about her father’s and grandfather’s plans to kill him.

she may have disguised it as mocking and taunting (which was a really smart thing to do because if ozai had found out, she could have covered it up as her being mean, which is the only thing everyone ever chooses to see from her anyways), but she was warning him.

she knows she’s considered a monster by everyone, some of them (ozai) like that about her and some of them hate it (everyone else), but even when it hurts her, she knows how to take advantage of it.

we don’t give this girl enough credit for her intelligence and assume everything is as shallow as it initially looks, but i’m done with it.

The Shōten and the Gotei 13

I’ve previously discussed the question of where Yoruichi (and Kisuke) were during Grimmjow’s “Night of Sledgehammer” attack on Karakura with his Fracción. @thepyrotechnicshiba made some interesting commentary on that post regarding where Tessai was at the same time such that Ururu and Jinta could get involved in combat. I have some interesting corroborations of this!

In chapter 298, Kenpachi explains to Ichigo that:

Kenpachi’s battle with Nnoitra is calculated on the wiki as having occurred on October 11, 2001. That is indeed basically one month after September 10, 2001, which was the day (and evening) when Yoruichi and Kisuke (and Tessai) were mysteriously absent. The panel of Kisuke in Kenpachi’s flashback and Kenpachi’s speech suggest that Kisuke was physically present at a meeting of Taichō where this was discussed.

If true, this would place Kisuke in Soul Society at essentially exactly the right time to substantiate a multi-purpose trip. This lends credence to the idea that Yoruichi was also there and using the healing spring in the study chamber. It also lends credence to the idea that, after Aizen fled Soul Society in August, Yoruichi negotiated with Yamamoto to lift Kisuke’s ban, thus allowing him to turn up at all in September.

While Kenpachi is blunt, he’s not dumb, so his assessment probably isn’t wrong and there’s an interesting question raised by his description of Yamamoto giving Kisuke orders: what were the terms of these negotiations? Especially if Yoruichi and Kisuke are, in their own ways, continuing to profess their loyalty to the realm of Soul Society?

Yoruichi was, obviously, the former Sōshireikan (Supreme Commander) of the Onmitsukidō, and 2nd Division Taichō. Judging by how Yamamoto addresses Tessai, Kidō Corps Commander, during TBTP, those two branches are perhaps not wholly coequal in stature, and Yoruichi was more directly his subordinate within the Gotei 13. Nonetheless, I believe she would’ve been entitled to more respect given that and her heritage than Kisuke, a junior Taichō, would’ve been, especially as she would’ve naturally been seen as the ringleader of what occurred during the Hollowfication Incident.

Yoruichi would’ve also had a leg up in that they, perhaps quite literally, were negotiating over the dead bodies of Central 46. It would’ve been very easy for her to make the case of, “I could’ve done this, and didn’t. Not only did I not, not only were we falsely accused, but we saved you this time too. You owe us thrice over.”

That the Shōten is allowed to continue more or less doing as it pleases is in my opinion a reflection of both this negotiating posture and its continuing military power. It feels notable that Yamamoto questions Shinji’s intentions when he and the Vizard appear in Fake Karakura, rather than immediately leaping to conclusions as he did when say, opposed by Jūshirō and Shunsui during the Soul Society arc. It’s almost like he’s now predisposed to negotiate, and not purely by the Gotei 13′s desperate circumstances at the time!

(This makes WDKALY’s reveal that Shunsui coerced Yoruichi into either taking over 8th Division or teaching at the Academy, after everything she’s done―to include having fought against his nemesis Tokinada in CFYOW―not just an “I am altering the deal, pray I don’t alter it any further,” kind of dick move on his part, not just a slap in the face to her, but also a repudiation of Yamamoto’s promises. While Shunsui is obviously totally down with doing whatever it takes to win, as he proved with releasing Aizen, what exactly does putting Yoruichi in the Academy achieve? Is she ‘corrupting the youth’ like Socrates? There’s no obvious payoff, and I don’t think she’d stand for it, which is why I directly reject it for RP purposes.)

Anyway, that Kenpachi was witness to this suggests that the other Taichō were too, and we actually have an interesting piece of evidence for that as well in chapter 369:

All of the Gotei 13′s forces are surprised at the arrival of the Vizard. Yamamoto indeed notes with surprise that Shinji was hiding out on Earth. So, this tells us that none of them knew the status of the Vizard. This is consistent with Kisuke not telling Isshin anything about them when Isshin does his info dump in chapter 188―Kisuke seems not to trust anyone outside of the Shōten with information about them.

Despite this, Soifon instantly figures out they’re associated with Kisuke based on what Hachigen says here, and instantly blames Kisuke. What’s interesting is that her flashback depicts Kisuke in modern attire. She’s seen him recently and talked about her Bankai with him. When could that possibly have happened? Probably after that meeting with Yamamoto and everyone else! (The way Kisuke is framed there, you can just imagine that he was greeting her and complimenting her on her achieving Bankai.)

(It’s also worth noting that Hachigen only could’ve met Soifon before Hollowfication, which would suggest that at some point prior to that, Yoruichi and Tessai met up with Soifon and Hachigen in tow.)

It also sort of strains credulity that Yoruichi wouldn’t have met and talked with Soifon too, among other things, during her time in Soul Society to recuperate.

To summarize: there were essentially several chapters worth of wheeling and dealing between the inhabitants of the Shōten and the Gotei 13 which happened almost entirely off-panel, which are only just barely alluded to through flashbacks and logical inferences. Why were these sequences not shown given their importance? I imagine it’s primarily because it would’ve meant that the arrival of Kenpachi, Byakuya, Mayuri, and Retsu in Las Noches wouldn’t have been a surprise, and there would have been no real tension or stakes to the proceedings up until then.

In your OT3, the Battletech one, do you have any notes, that you're willing to share, on how you're going to handle Urahara and Soifon? I know in the past you have said that you found Soifon's character to be creepy in how its seen or portrayed in relation to Yoruichi.

To be specific, I called how she’s often portrayed as obsessed with Yoruichi in extended universe material (e.g., anime filler and omake, video game story lines, etc.) as being cringey in one post, and kind of gross in another. I didn’t really mean to suggest that Soi Fon herself is creepy, but the people writing her sorta are. Her canonical characterization and character arc in Soul Society is fine without being overwrought in my opinion (considering she looked up to Yoruichi as basically an idol), and thereafter in the manga it doesn’t feel very played up; her characterization is ironically a way in which the manga is better. (Although a lot of that comes from it not being much referenced again...)

I haven’t really written things out for her or Kisuke in the BattleTech AU. (I have in the Modern AU, to an extent; Kisuke’s circumstances are decently elaborated upon in the notes. Soi Fon I assumed would still be a Navy pilot and her bitter early self if encountered again.) But, to contemplate it now... I think Soi Fon would be associated with the Draconis Combine and still be in their employ. She might’ve suffered a loss of face following Yoruichi’s desertion which would probably amplify her feelings of betrayal (putting her in line with the sort of darker take on Byakuya and perhaps Renji) but given her character, she likely would have made every effort to “redeem” herself in the eyes of the state. I sort of imagine Yuushirou is in charge of the Draconis Combine and is not at all keen on hunting his sister down, which probably chafes at Soi Fon, but she is simply biding her time. I didn’t immediately plan out her getting involved but it’s certainly an obvious pick for them to run afoul of her eventually. I think she would be very disappointed in Yoruichi choosing to establish a mercenary group and likewise be very dismissive of Ichigo and Rukia; she’d probably make them priority targets if she gained any sense of what was going on between the three. (It probably takes a lot longer and a lot of fighting and intrigue to come to a truce with the main antagonists than in the source material.)

Regarding Kisuke, I find their source relationship a bit odd. She always calls him “Kisuke” in TBTP (e.g., Chapters -107 and -106) but in the present she varies between that (e.g., chapter 195) and calling him “Urahara” (chapter 185) even when no one else is around but them. It’s strange, and combined with their relationship dynamic completely swapping across the century, it suggests to me there is a certain distance between them. (Which her unexplained absence seems to reaffirm, as Jinta and Ururu have never seen her before.) Which is why, in these YIR fics, she is usually describing her relationship with him as some variation of on-again, off-again. Even when I think of UraYoru, I feel like they have closer and more distant periods.

I think in BattleTech AU he and Yoruichi are more close friends and confidants than having ever been lovers, although they still might have been. I do think he’d support her desires to be happy. Of course, either way it’s still kind of a bit awkward for Ichigo and Rukia, because in this particular AU he’d technically be their boss.

I get the sense he would be a bit teasing with Rukia but mostly polite (as in the source material), but I think it would be a bit different with Ichigo. While Kisuke would mostly still put on his good natured and jokey persona, I do get the sense he’d pull Ichigo aside at some point, do the shadowed eyes under the hat thing, and say something like, “If you break her heart, I break you.” And Ichigo would probably say something like, “You’ll never have the chance. She’d do it herself first, and if she didn’t, Rukia would still beat you to the punch.” They’d probably stare each other down for a bit and then Kisuke would laugh and play it off like a joke, satisfied for the moment with the response.

I think he would be very involved with trying to suss out their path of survival and offloading that burden of leadership from Yoruichi so she could enjoy herself as best she could. That kind of silently taking on responsibility is very much his thing.

Beyond that, I’m not too sure. I’m kind of open to ideas and commentary. (I do get the sense that Yoruichi might continue trying to provoke Soi Fon by suggesting she was interested in Kisuke, which would probably not irritate her in this timeline, but absolutely infuriate her.)

ok so people like to downplay mai’s character a lot and im done w it, especially ignoring the fact that she clearly has some issues going on, many symptoms of depression too, and claim it’s all just a way to make her seem edgy or smth?

no.

watching atla, i related so much to mai. that absence of interest or excitement for absolutely everything except when huge things happen, like in her case it was her family getting attacked and having to chase the attackers down, butt even then, the “fun” was shortlived and she went back to being “bored”. those feelings of disinterest for everything, and i guess downright nothingness, are things i’ve been dealing with for years and it doesn’t really get better at all without psychological treatments and medication.

people act as if when she talks about stuff like hating everybody, she’s trying to be “quirky” or “edgy” or “cool”, but you guys forget that the atla world isn’t our world, in which depression has been extremely romanticized, downplayed and overused as a term for feelings of sadness when it’s way more complex than that. there is no reason why mai would be saying that stuff in the atla world unless she really feels that way.

given all i’ve seen of mai, i’m 100% sure she is clinically depressed and i say that as someone with diagnosed depression. for some people it manifests in different ways but for me it was always just like mai.

she isn’t constantly sad and weepy as it’s sometimes portrayed in tv. as far as i’ve seen, she does care deeply about some people and yet she’s done with all of them at the same time, her love language is much more through actions rather than through words, gifts or physical affection displays, sometimes the actions are huge like at boiling rock, and sometimes they’re smaller, but are often overlooked because of her collected, calm and aloof sort of behavior. and there’s also that constant boredom that only fades a bit sometimes but doesn’t leave for enough amount of time for it to really matter.

i’m just done with people admiring zuko’s complexity while overlooking every other character and acting as if they’re one dimensional. because of course zuko was complex but so was everybody else!!!

ok so guys, remember that “my father always says azula was born lucky, i was lucky to be born” line? yeah, now explain to me why tf are we even considering OZAIs words?!?! like some people use this line as an argument against azula when its literally what OZAI SAID?!?!!?!!?!

Zuko’s good and bad luck, as well as Azulas. Was either of them lucky? Let’s see.

Please read all of it before drawing assumptions.

Zuko’s luck:

- has mums care and affection

- has irohs care and affection

- can get away with being a softie as a child, because he may get disregarded and called weak but lets be honest, azula wouldnt have been able to get away with his behavior because she didn’t have firstborn privilege (which is a thing while azulon lived) or mummy’s protection like he did.

before anyone comes at me i’ll expand a bit on the firstborn privilege. as first born he was instantly considered more important by the masses since birth, that might’ve changed later but before neither could bend that much was still a fact. which means azula wouldn’t really have any recognition for anything unless she surpassed him in every way, which is what became her goal especially when ozai became the one who spent more time with her rather than ursa, anyways lets continue.

- constantly receiving second chances; iroh, the gaang minus katara, katara, azula (even if not from the “good” side), ozai (no matter the intentions, this much is true), iroh again, mai, the entire fckng world.

- he had a guide and help throughout his long healing and learning process.

Zuko’s bad luck:

- Unloving father

- Mummy disappears

- Doesn’t train that hard and surprise surprise, is worse than azula. Because if he had really trained hard, he would’ve at least known the formations wether he was able to firebend with them or not, but he was just clearly trying to copycat azula while tripping over because he didn’t have that much experience doing it. This is something no one can change my mind about. How tf did he expect to excel if he didn’t train enough. This wasnt about luck but hard work which he didn’t put in, too busy playing with mum and the little turtleducks. And I do not hate Zuko, I really love him but this is just a fact and he’s too fixed on blaming everyone else for his own mistakes and problems (esp Azula). Like, im sorry to break it out to you honey, but Ozai hates you because he’s an asshole, and that’s his own fault, not Azula’s.

- Scar and exile time, we all know this.

- Ugly haircut because of dishonor

- Finally achieving his goal of regaining his “honor” but realizing it wasn’t what he wanted only when he was already at the Fire Nation palace having all the glory from Aang’s presumed death.

- Katara’s distrust after his betrayal (bc who would’ve expected that to happen /s)

- Getting zapped in an attempt to save Katara.

I mean except for the things related to Ozai, most of this was all consequences from his own actions.

And I’m sorry but I don’t understand the fixation he has with having Ozai’s love. Unlike Azula, he has had his mother’s love and his uncle’s love. He knows what real love looks like and he has never really seen anything that could imply Ozai likes him, while he has Iroh treating him like he’s his actual father.

I’m not invalidating his traumas in any way and terrible things did happen to him, but why is he so obsessed with Ozai and why would he choose him over Iroh, he’s 16 and has been with Iroh since age 13, he was also with Ursa for the majority of his childhood, make it make sense.

Azula’s luck:

- Uh she was born rlly smart i guess

- She had some natural talent and knew to train hard to shape it to perfection, as well as studying a lot about war tactics and shit ig

- Ty Lee and Mai loved her and she loved them back

I mean as far as luck goes, that’s it. Everything else was achieved on her own merit and even if she had no scar, her traumas are just as valid as Zuko’s, neither is worse or better, we do not compare traumas in this house and they were both terrible.

Azula’s bad luck:

- Bad mother (i’ll make a post on why Ursa sucks)

- No second chances

- Mum never said goodbye just like she never said “i love you” lol, except in that one hallucination

- Never has had any real help to heal (i’ll make a post on why the asylum was a trash idea that would’ve never worked)

- Can’t fully trust anyone, not even herself, or will be punished for it

- The only people who loved her, Mai and Ty Lee, “betraying” her (check out my post on that, its under #jinta’s commentary)

- Ozai psychologically abusing her all her life

- Some characters may have been lonely, but she was genuinely absolutely alone. And she knew it.

- Hurt and self-hatred channeled through anger like Zuko did sometimes when he had that shame shave ponytail, but with her, its all the time.

- Even his abuser abandons her

- Everyone hates her but forgives Zuko, Mai and Ty Lee. And it’s so annoying because all Mailee did that Azula didn’t was swap sides almost at the end, if the excuse is that they were being manipulated well Ozai was manipulating Azula so what’s the excuse.

- Is always believed to be lying but usually isn’t (check out my azula always lies post)

- Has a mental breakdown and nobody gives a shit?! Like the first think Zuko thought of was “ooh she’s slipping lemme take advantage of that”

- Has nothing and no one, yay

- Gets thrown into a stupid asylum but not rlly because there are no comics in ba sing se

While Zuko had Ursa and Iroh to protect him and stuff, she was victim of Ozai’s manipulation and psychological abuse all her life.

So when we know Ozai said she was lucky, why tf is anyone taking his word for it??!

Plus when Zuko was born they didn’t know how he would be and Azula didn’t exist so there was no way he could’ve been lucky to be born.

Zuko was very unlucky, but he was also lucky.

Azula was just unlucky.

why does azula have blue fire? well, unlike what some people seem to believe, it is not something that just magically happened, no.

it is because she’s just that smart.

while everyone else goes punching around like animals, she focuses her power on two fingers, therefore her shots are more precise and the fire hotter which in return makes it blue! simple. this is something that she most likely adapted from lightningbending techniques onto her firebending. and let’s remember that she literally was the only one to do so!!!

ok but hear me out, mai and ty lee’s betrayal.

so all that i love zuko more than i fear you? absolutely true, but it doesn’t mean she hates azula, it just means she doesn’t fear her as much as she cares about zuko.

mai and ty lee’s fear for azula wad genuine, but they didn’t hate her. mai was angry at azula most of the time because of her actions and behavior, but at the end of the day they had been friends since they were little children so she must’ve known azula’s circumstances quite well, and understood them to a certain point.

she must’ve known azula quite well, and she clearly did because everything she said or did was sort of with the knowledge and anticipation of how the princess would react.

even if she wasn’t going to forgive azula for everything just like that, she could’ve killed her because she did have the chance, but she didn’t and after everything that happened i think that says a lot.

ty lee betrayed azula to prevent the fight between her two best friends. it doesn’t mean she loves mai more than azula, nor the opposite. but it does mean she loved them both more than she feared azula. because let’s be clear, ty lee freaking adored azula.

now azula is a very impulsive person when she’s hurt, and she channels hurt through anger which is a coping mechanism and it’s only natural given her upbringing.

if azula had killed mai in boiling rock, she would’ve deeply regretted it. and she wouldn’t have been able to do anything about it because showing vulnerability or “weakness” is prohibited for ozai’s daughter. i firmly believe that it would’ve destroyed her mental health way more than the betrayal, because even if she then has bigger trust issues than the huge ones she had before, that is something that can be changed, that isn’t eternal. and killing may would’ve been irreversible.

mai and ty lee could’ve easily fought the boiling rock guards and dealt with azula while she was chi blocked but neither of them did, and instead let them imprison them.

they chose not to hurt azula more than she already was.

and no matter how much azula claims to want zuko dead, no matter how much she resents him or blames him for their upbringing, if she had successfully murdered him, it would’ve hurt her too.

some of y’all like to think of ty lee as dumb but she is not, and she knows azula better than anyone else. she knows she would’ve regretted it.

ty lee stopped azula out of love for mai.

azula has shown signs of genuine regret and empathy, especially towards ty lee.

just because she represses every single feeling she has in order to make ozai proud, it doesn’t mean she doesn’t have them.

the post: “be honest, do you really think she got what she wanted,” referring to the “i got everything i wanted” audio by billie eilish that they used for an azula edit.

me: she didn’t even want anything that big or greedy, all she wanted was for the people she loves to love her back, to be actually cared about and trusted. to be the source of someone’s pride and happiness.

ughazula: NO LITERALLY, her trauma’s more emotional than physical so obviously people would bring up her (inexcusable) actions to ignore it... like bestie, zuko and azula were equally abused, only in different ways, WAKE UPP 🔥🔥

me: yeah and if we’re gonna hold her accountable for all she’s done then let’s hold everyone else accountable too!! zuko has raided entire villages just to capture a 12 year old for reasons that benefited him and only him. the gaang have literally killed people before and it doesn’t matter if their intentions were noble because all azula did was for her father and nation too, switching perspectives and all she did was good intentioned too.

me: iroh legit held ba sing se under siege for 600 days where many people died and the gaang (esp toph) as well as zuko went around scamming and stealing from people. meanwhile azula captured ba sing se without hurting ANYBODY, she threatened people a lot sure, but did she ever really kill people? and im sure if she had wanted to kill iroh when she zapped him, he would’ve died, but she didn’t aim for the kill and instead just K.Oed him

ughazula: ure so right, perspective is extremely important when it comes to these things. azula had no external influence apart from ozai so she believed that what she was doing was right and was for her nation, and I’m more than sure it was too much to take in that after everything she’s done it wasn’t enough. and yes she isn’t the only character who’s done bad things, iroh even laughed about burning an entire city!! it pisses me off the the fandom demonizes azula the most when she’s literally the youngest from the fire nation and never got a chance to be out of ozai’s influence, they want her to die already even if iroh redeemed himself around his 40-50s and they praise him because most his screen time was already post redemption, when he was helping zuko
