Question! I haven't seen Dolly Parton's Heartstrings despite all my efforts but for a thing I'm writing, what happened to JJ's knees?

Well, it's kinda definitely a bit of a spoiler... I mean, the "JJ ain't got knees" joke itself won't spoil much, but the context would.

At the end of the JJ Sneed episode (which is the only one you need to worry about seeing ;)), JJ gets his comeuppance when the female lead confronts him. In the JJ Sneed song, she shoots him dead - so the viewer's expecting that outcome all along. But instead of killing him, she kneecaps him (shoots out both his knees) and leaves him writhing on the ground. The wounds won't kill him - but given the state of health care in the wild west, and the likelihood of him ever seeing any... he'll never walk again, 'cos

Just cause I’m an asshole, I thought I’d put my future spec for JJ here as well, so that @hollyethecurious and the discord ladies don’t have to suffer alone 

Idk but I picture him escaping after he’s healed and like going to hunt her down in revenge, and he finds her in some small prospecting town, sheriff badge on her hip as she rides out to a farm. Two younger people with blonde hair and the horizon in their eyes come out and crack a joke and they all laugh. And he stays his hand, unable to fight his curiosity, and as he watches them that’s night settling down for dinner, it’s obvious that she managed to find her siblings. But as the night falls and his injuries start to ache, his bitterness returns and he gears up to shoot her on the porch where she’s looking up at the sky, a look of peace on her face that he envies, like the black hearted bastard  he is and then a young child comes running out, and she picks the little girl up to spin her around, and the girl has her daddy’s dark hair and blue eyes. And he just.... can’t.

And then maybe he’s conflicted on what to do so he ends up in town, watching her for a few days, while she sherrifs, and she’s damn good at her job and the townsfolk respect her. And maybe one day he’s not paying attention and a little girl with bright eyes wanders up to him cause she likes his hat. And he near about has a heart attack because he knows that smile despite the eyes that he avoided seeing in the mirror. And she is curious and darling and likes his horse and she asks his name and he says it’s JJ and she’s like me too! And he’s going to be sick. And she’s like mine stands for Josephine joy. See the joy is there cause mamma says that when she had nothing else left and her heart was broken, she found out about me and I was her spot of joy. And Josephine was her mamas name. What’s yours stand for? And then he hears maggie calling out JJ! And the darling little one turns and he needs to leave but he doesn’t want to give up that smile. But then Maggie’s coming and he has to leave, unable now to face her.

But odd things start happening in the years that follow. Fences mend themselves in the night, lost cattle are suddenly back in the pasture, a year of bad harvest has a few bags of seed appearing in the barn. And little flowers, a small doll, little toys and trinkets get left on little JJs window sill. And as she grows up, she never speaks about it. Never mentions the shadow she catches from the corner of her eye sometime. Never mentions when she got lost and fell asleep in the woods, tears on her face and woke up safe and warm in the barn. Never mentions when she was in town one night when she was a little older, and a drunkard and scoundrel tries to attack her and then he’s screaming at her feet, and only the shadow of a silhouette, the glint of a six shooter and the brim of a hat the only things she can make out. Never tells about the unsigned letters she’s get over the years, an elegant scrawl that told her stories that were better than the books her mama would read to her. Never mentions when one day, after years, when she’s strong and free as her mama, she finds Maggie on the porch, staring at the two objects laying neatly against the rail and somehow knew she’d never be getting flowers in her window sill again. But she treasured that hat and Winchester rifle for the rest of her life.

After a year of waiting, I wasn't sure if JJ Sneed could possibly live up to the hype. But man, it EXCEEDED all of my expectations!

It had everything I love, including:

- Colin on horseback

- Colin existing

- Colin

Okay but it was SO GOOD. I mean I love a dumb Western but this was a dumb Western with a twist I hadn’t seen before AND great acting AND that charming son of a bitch swaggering around smirking at people and shooting people and lying and cheating his way through life

and then getting what he deserves because lbr he’s a complete bastard

but I LOVE HIM, in all his drawling swaggering hat-wearing mud-slinging glory

honestly this episode was EVERYTHING I wanted and more, it’s a damn gift and I love it and just, bless Colin for his skills and his charm and his face, congrats sir, that was amazing

I finally watched JJ Sneed yesterday. The first thing you need to know is I don't watch things just because Colin is in it. I don't watch things for certain actors period. So I was eager to watch this because the previews looked so good and because I grew up listening to Dolly Parton with my parents. (right, @snowbellewells ?) Pigeon Forge, Tennessee is also a short vacation for my family, so I have been there many times (yes, Dollywood too - don't laugh, it's fun). Anyways, the point is watching had little to do with Colin. Watching JJ Sneed, the second to last episode, first? Okay, that was Colin.

So what did I think? I loved it! I even disagree with most reviews I've seen in that I loved Maddie. Maybe that's because I was also a naive bookworm at that age ;) Normally, I'm screaming for said naive girl not to fall for the bad boy's charms, but in JJ Sneed I was charmed right along with Maggie. If I hadn't read the song lyrics and @killian-whump 's review, I may even have been shocked by the reveal at the bar behind Maddie's back. Yet by the time she confronted him by the lake, I was eager for her to put JJ in his place and was so proud when she didn't fall for his lies. There's also just something about Dolly's narration that takes me back to my childhood. It was so fun, and I plan on watching all of Heartstrings! I am so happy that Colin finally took a role in something I actually wanted to watch 😊

Side note: I agree with @killian-whump : JJ can't read, and I love your idea for part two, @gingerchangeling !

Colin O’Donoghue as JJ Sneed in Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings

After getting shot in the side during a failed robbery, JJ Sneed needs to be hauled off the back of his wagon and helped into the cabin by Maddie and Reverend Riggs. Colin does some excellent method acting here, truly emulating a bleeding sack of potatoes in ridiculous pain. He also makes a lot of excellent pain noises that I wish these GIFs were capable of relaying.
