An introduction to rolling stock VR operates for other owners, part 1: JKOY Sm5

A seismic shift happened on Finnish railroads in 2004. The municipalities of the capital city region (Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen), together with VR, formed a new company, Pääkaupunkiseudun Junakalusto Oy (JKOY for short, roughtly translating as Capital City Region Train Rolling Stock Company), for the purposes of acquiring local trains to replace the existing rolling stock used on the commuter services around Helsinki, and to tender out the operation of the trains in the future. (We later sold our share to be eligible to bid for the operation of the trains).

JKOY's choice fell on the Swiss constructor Stadler's FLIRT (Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train) design, but adopted to Finnish needs, most notably with much thicker insulation than on units delivered elsewhere. With first units ordered in 2006, these were given the Finnish designation Sm5. While Flirt trains can be built with a service speed of 200 km/h, HSL opted for the somewhat slower 160 km/h variant.

The first Sm5 units were delivered in 2008 and entered regular service in 2009. The operation of the trains was awarded to VR, and we have continued to provide the service ever since.

The four-carriage units are all low-floor at the entrances and there are large spaces for prams, wheelchairs and bicycles. The Sm5 proved highly practical and popular in use, and the original order of 32 units was later increased first to 41 units in 2011, then to 75 units in 2014 and finally to 81 units in 2015. The last Sm5 was delivered in 2017.

Originally, the Sm5 units were delivered in the livery of Pääkaupunkiseudun yhteistyövaltuuskunta (YTV), white and grey with blue and lime green accent stripes. YTV was superceded as the organiser of public transportation within the capital city region in 2010 by the new Helsingin Seudun Liikenne (HSL, Helsingforsregionens Trafik, HRT, in Swedish, Helsinki Regional Transport Authority in English). HSL initially kept the old livery for the trains, but in 2015 a new livery was unveiled, with violet replacing the blue and green. The last Sm5's were delivered in this new livery, and all older units were repainted by 2022.

Today, the Sm5 remains the sole train type operated on services within the HSL area. Local trains to destinations beyond the HSL area are operated by us, mostly using the Sm4 units, but HSL tickets are valid for trips on those lines within the HSL area. Unless the HSL area, or train services within it, is radically expanded in the future, we can expect the Sm5's to remain the sole HSL local train for the foreseeable future. And hopefully we'll also continue to operate them.

An introduction to VR multiple units, part 6: Sm7

Today, we look into the future, far to the distant year 2025... no, wait, that's next year! Anyway, next year we will take delivery of our newest passenger rolling stock: the Sm7 electric multiple units. They will enter passenger services in 2026.

During the acquisition process of the Sm7, various possible requirement were disucssed in public, including double-decker rolling stock, and service speeds up to 200 km/h. However, the final choice was a single-decker train of Stadler Flirt design (the same platform as JKOY Sm5 units used in local services around the Helsinki region), with a service speed of 160 km/h.

The contract for 20 four-carriage units was signed in 2022, with deliveries starting 2025. VR has an option for up to 50 additional units. The 20 trains ordered will be used on long-haul slow-stopping services from Helsinki to Tampere and Lahti (lines R, Z, D and T), as well as on the Tampere and Hanko local train services (lines M and H), replacing the Sm4's, which will in turn be cascaded to the lines linking Kotka, Kouvola, Lahti and Riihimäki (G and O), replacing the Sm2's. The additional trains suitable for local services will also make it possible to expand the local train services.

However, it should also be noted that the projected interiors are much more akin to long-distance trains than current local train fleet, and the 160 km/h service speed would also make the Sm7 usable on Intercity services on some routes. Whether the trains will be used on these in addition to local services is an entirely different question, of course.

And now for something completely different: a tram! In addition to the Sm5 units we operate for JKOY, we also operate all the trams of the Tampere tramway.

The Tampere tram system is Finland's newest tram system, opened in 2021, with one extension opened in 2023, and another due to open in 2025. As rolling stock, the city-owned Tampereen Raitiotie Oy opted for a developed version of the Finnish-built Škoda Transtech X34 tram, which had previously been built for the Helsinki tram system.

Although the units built for Tampere share the same type designation as the Helsinki trams, X34, the Tampere units are longer, wider and have different track gauge (the Tampere system is currently the only standard-gauge, aka 1435 mm gauge, rail network in Finland). The exterior design is also different, with a brick-red styling from the local designers IDIS.

The Tampere X34's have a capacity for 264 passengers per unit and a service top speed of 70 km/h (actual top speed is 80 km/h). Twenty trams have been delivered to date, with six more due for delivery for the next extension in 2025, and TRO has an option for 40 additional units for future extensions of the system.

VR was awarded the contract to operate all TRO trams for the first ten-year period from 2021 onwards in 2019. Hopefully, with the good work we do, we'll get the next ten-year contract too!
