Jamie and Mei’s Library Trip

Jamie, Mei, and Chester the beagle made it to the library bright and early this morning to stock up for the weekend. After a long month of grey skies with only the barest teasings of sunlight to be had, they were happy to take the long way back on the bridge to soak up all of the Vitamin D.

Jamie picked up another Nancy Drew mystery for Emily, “The Quest of the Missing Map.” She also snagged a copy of “Robin Hood” that she’s planning to buddy-read with Kit. Mei has more of a tendency to enjoy non-fiction, especially paired with audiobooks. She grabbed a book on astrology because Christine (TM #23) informed her that Mei is a triple Scorpio and she needs to know what she’s in for.

As there have been more and more challenges to the intellectual freedom of public libraries in recent years, they also made sure to put in book purchase requests while they were there for minority voices typically targeted by conservative groups according to the American Library Association. Jamie requested “Abeni’s Song” by P. Djèlí Clark and “A Bit of Earth” by Karuna Riazi. Mei ordered “Skating on Mars” by Caroline Huntoon and “We Are Your Children Too” by P. O’Connell Pearson. This can be especially fun to do throughout Black History Month when reading lists are plentiful. Chester didn’t request anything but he did promise not to eat any books that looked especially tasty.

The public library is a place for all voices. Jamie and Mei plan to do their part to keep it that way.

K so Nicki2 and Isabel have leaked and I hate their designs but like. earlier today I texted a friend some thoughts on them and I’m just gonna copypaste it here and edit it slightly to fit blog post format

Okay so. Pessimistic prediction, but I think these dolls are going to go over the worst with collectors/long-time fans. Not only are they pulling a Tenney and usurping a doll of color’s year, they’re dropping before Claudie’s second book is even out, before Kavi’s FIRST book is even out, AND are white in a time period where it would be insanely easy to put in dolls of color. AND reusing names? Hoo boi.

I don’t know how well they’ll go over with general audiences cause I’m sure the 90s nostalgia will sell but. Will it sell THAT well? As well as the fact that with the leaks I can now say the dolls look incredibly generic AT BEST. I babysit two girls in the AG target range who are actually like. The ideal AG targets. The oldest is obsessed with Kaya and wants to get all her historically-accurate accessories and her sister is obsessed with the Truly Me dolls with multicolored hair. I don’t see the oldest being really into Y2K dolls with no books (yet) and the youngest would just think they look boring compared to her JLY119. They just look bland as fuck, especially Isabel, ESPECIALLY after how poor Kira selled. They’re also coming with journals and not books and I can tell you from the instagram section of some Kavi posts, parents will NOT be thrilled about that.

This is literally the only time I have had NO hype for a new doll. Even with the disappointment of Courtney’s blonde whiteness I was still hyped to see her collection, these dolls just feel meh at best. Like they couldn’t even make them biracial? If  they have to be white at least make them look interesting, I said this before with Courtney and Kira but there are ways to make white dolls look good. Joss is white but looks completely different from the other brunette dolls, for instance. Blaire is ginger but looks different from Felicity and Mia. They don’t have any white dolls with black hair yet, they don’t have any with significant birthmarks. They’re just bland white girls who look like AG just pulled them from the JLY line cause they were scared Claudie and Kavi wouldn’t sell and needed some whities to fall back on.

Instituting a ban on blondes after this. AG gets a 40 year timeout from blondes.

Is it cool if I ask a bunch of specific questions about your dollhouse? Like what did you make it out of? How big is it? How many rooms are there? And how many dolls live in it?

I want to make one of my own... potentially. I'm torn between making one from scratch or getting that one WalMart made through a resale shop, painting over all the details, and re-detailing it myself. ANYWAY, I need ideas and inspiration.

i love talking about my dollhouse, so ask away!

The dollhouse is the way I display all my dolls, as I like displaying them in little scenes. If they are part of my collection, they live in the dollhouse! that means it’s pretty crowded, with 22 different 18 in dolls (two aren’t in the pic bc they’re getting fixed) and one wellie. there are also 3 dolls im actively planning to get (claudie, Courtney, and Cecile), and there are 4 more on my “if I found them for an excellent price I’d totally snag them” list (Kirsten, ruthie, Emily, and luciana). So it might get even more crowded 😅

here’s an overview pic of the current state of it:

it’s not fully set up yet (as you can tell by the random room full of naked dolls in the top right lol), and most rooms don’t have a proper scene set up atm, but I thought an honest look at what it usually looks like might be helpful lol.

I made it out of storage shelves I bought secondhand. I saw a lot of people making dollhouses online out of bookshelves, but the dimensions just didn’t work for what I was planning. For my plan, the shelves needed to be at least two feet deep (to accommodate beds facing outward), have adjustable shelves (to accommodate the taller furniture), and be either 3 or 4 feet wide to make the rooms large enough for fun scenes.

I found shelves that worked online from hardware stores, but they’d be super expensive, so I set up an alert on Facebook marketplace instead, and got lucky! They weren’t like. Super duper cheap, but they were much more affordable. Because they’re secondhand, most of the floors have a slight dip in the middle, but its not too bad.

The drawback to using shelves with open sides is that you have to make walls, which is really time-consuming (and the cost of materials can really add up!), but it was worth it for me to get the dimensions I wanted. My only real regret is not painting the shelves white before putting them in place. I hate how the ceilings in all my pictures are grey, but at this point it would be really hard to change, as I don’t want to spray paint in my poorly-ventilated basement 😭 The floors are just made from contact paper I got on Amazon and stuck on the shelves, and I’m really pleased with them.

There are nine rooms. Each room is 2 feet deep, 3 feet wide, and about 2 feet high (the heights vary a bit). Overall, the setup is 2 feet deep, 9 feet long, and about 6 feet high. It’s a big boy! Thankfully, there was a nice clear space in the basement for my doll zone, otherwise I never would have been able to have such a big setup 😅 it was really important to me for it to be big, as it’s not just a dollhouse, but also my doll display.

Having a bunch of rooms was really important to me, because I wanted to make themed rooms for a lot of the historical characters. Going across from left to right, top to bottom the rooms are: the modern bedroom (shared by kanani, Jess, Nicki, Mia, and Jessica who is a jly), the 60s/70s/80s bedroom (shared by Julie, ivy, melody, and eventually Courtney - I’m asking for Courtney for christmas so she’s not here yet), a room I haven’t decided about (it was gonna be Kaya’s but her tipi is too big 😭), the 1900s/1910s bedroom( shared by Sam, Nellie, and Rebecca), the 20s/30s bedroom (currently it’s just kit’s, but claudie will share with her when I get her), the 40s/50s bedroom (it’s entirely based on Molly’s bedroom from her scenes and settings, but she also shares with Maryellen and Nanea), the bathroom/laundry room, and the living room/kitchen (which takes up two room slots).

There are some girls who don’t really have a room that fits. Those are Caroline, Elizabeth, felicity, Marie-grace, addy, and josefina. Cecile and Kirsten would also be missing a spot if they were in my collection. Some of them will likely end up sharing the remaining unassigned room, but I don’t think all of them will work in one room. It will probably just end up being like. a very vague fancy historical girls room lol. I mostly want a reason to own Caroline’s bed haha

As far as ideas for your own dollhouse goes - it all depends on how much time you want to spend on your dollhouse build, and the size and shape you want it to be. I wanted mine to be really big with specific dimensions, so I had to go super custom with it. Re-detailing the one from Walmart is an EXCELLENT option if you like the size and shape of it, and/or don’t want to spend forever making pieces of it (I might die before I finish those walls 😭). If you want to do it custom, but don’t care as much about the rooms being deep as I did, I recommend going with a shelf with walls.

I do want to mention that just because you DIY something, that doesn’t mean it will be cheaper (sorry, every diy YouTube channel). The price of a diy project depends on a lot of things, both which you know going in (like your skill level, which limits what techniques you can use for building, and the cost for the basic materials) and things you don’t (like unexpected issues that may pop up, further customizations you want to make later on). That does not mean you can’t make a custom dollhouse on a budget - it just means you will need to plan carefully, find great deals, and spend a lot of time working on it (which can be fun!). Just because it’s not cheaper doesn’t mean it’s not worth it, but price can be an important consideration.

hi! so i'm looking to start collecting American Girls, but i have a question on how much i should be paying for each doll. like obviously i expect white bodied/PC dolls in general to be the highest, but how would you gauge a doll out? like, what's the best ranges for major TLC, minor TLC, obviously used but no TLC needed, gently used, NIB? i'm seeing Kirsten's going for $500 plus and while i already have her, i'm trying to gauge how much i should pay to start/restart my collection haha

$500 is definitely the top end of what Kirsten should be selling for. She's a very common doll and is very plentiful on the secondhand market. For that much money I'd expect her to be brand new in the box and with a lot of her collection included. It's good to keep in mind that people can list their dolls for whatever price they want, but they might not necessarily be actually selling for that much.

That said, prices can be very different from one doll to the other, and so I can't give you an exact price that applies to all dolls. A doll's worth is affected not only by the condition they're in, but also by how rare they are, or how in-demand they are, and demand for certain dolls can change a lot in any given time period. So for a very common doll like Kirsten, you can find them for as little as $60 in TLC condition. For a very rare doll like JLY #6, they can easily go for $600+ even in lightly played with condition. For a not-terribly-rare-but-in-high-demand doll like #4, they can go for $300 in played with condition.

Those numbers go up $50 to $100 more if the doll is in mint condition with all original outfit pieces, and go lower if the doll needs major or minor TLC. Or if there are suddenly a lot to choose from on the secondhand market. Or if they were re-released by American Girl, like Molly was this summer. Molly's secondhand prices have gone down a little bit now that she can be bought brand-new from American Girl, and people don't need to bother with the secondhand market if they want Molly. Marie-Grace is another good example of that.... before September of this year, she was in high demand due to her unique and short-lived face mold, but AG brought back her face mold to the Truly Me line, so now any collectors who want a Marie-Grace face mold doll can just buy her new for $115, rather than paying $150+ secondhand. So secondhand Marie-Grace is worth a little less than she was this time last year.

You can definitely collect on a budget, if you're okay with having dolls that need a little TLC, dolls that aren't rare or in high demand, and newer dolls if they have an older Pleasant Company version. So for example, a 1991 PC-made Felicity doll is worth more than a 2003 Mattel-made Felicity doll, even when both are in mint condition.

Your first step should be to start checking out listings of the dolls you want, and watch their prices before you buy. See how common they are on the secondhand market. Pay attention to what they're being listed for, and watch carefully what they're actually selling for. That will give you an idea of how much you can realistically expect to pay for a doll, and how common they are.

So for example, if you're wanting a Kaya doll in good condition, several of them might be listed for $150. Watch those listings. If those dolls sell right away, that's a good indication that this is the going rate for Kaya. If those listings end up just sitting around without being purchased, then that means the sellers are likely charging too much. If other listings are selling quickly for $70, then that's the price you can expect to pay.

Mercari.com and ShopGoodwill.com are good places to find bargains on dolls that aren't rare or need TLC. A lot of fixer upper dolls can be yours for $30 to $40. But do remember that if the doll needs major repairs like restringing or wig replacement, that is an additional cost you'll have to pay. Browsing the listings of AG dolls on ShopGoodwill.com is a really good way to see the extremes in doll prices. Here's one that proves this.

This looks like an Isabelle doll, Girl of the Year 2014. She is extremely common, since she was a very popular doll with children in 2014. But she has cut hair and markings on her face which might or might not be removable with treatment. The listing is ending in 6 hours and so far has no bids, at $15. This is a good example of what NOT to buy! You will come across many, many Isabelles in your searches, and you can easily find one in better shape for not a whole lot more money. Other collectors are aware of this too, which is why nobody has bid and likely won't.

On the other side of things, here's a listing for JLY #86 that has one day of bidding left:

This is a doll that you won't see as commonly in your searches. She was retired ridiculously early in her availability period, and was only released in 2020, so she's going to be a little harder to find. At least until a few years down the road, when children who bought this doll are grown up and not interested in dolls anymore, and are okay with their parents donating her to Goodwill or selling her on Mercari or eBay. So right now you'll be paying a higher price for her secondhand, since she's less common and in very high demand. That will change in a few years when she's more likely to be sold secondhand.

What I'm going to do is browse some secondhand listings, and watch a few auctions and see what they prices they end at, and then I'll reblog this post with a few more examples of how to read and judge listings. So give me a few hours and I'll get back to this post later tonight with more info.

Question for AG collectors

Recently I was thrifting at different antique stores, as you do in New England, and found a JLY #54. She was listed at $80 — but on sale at 20% off. Duh, of course I bought her without even examining the state of her neck strings, if she had her body tag, if she had silver eye, etc. 

I got home and realized that she’s in excellent shape. Since I already have several dolls with the Jess mold (JLY 30, JLY 40, and Ivy Ling), I’ve thought about selling her on eBay. But she’s also a rare doll, with most eBay listings starting at $200. If I ever wanted her again, I’d be paying a steep price.

So what would you do? Keep or sell her??

Samantha I spent about $40, then put in a LOT of work, she’ll sell for $20 if I’m lucky.

JLY #49 was roughly $50 with the new wig, a FUCKTON of work, and JLY are netting between $10-$20 before shipping. And that’ll be regardless of whether or not I do rebuff her skin matte again.

I like fixing them, but can’t afford to keep taking a loss on them.

And I cannot keep them, there is NO room.

Hey, just going on a long tangent about dolls, don’t mind me.

So like... I’ve always said that I did not want a Tenney Grant doll. I just never really understood the hype about her and didn’t really find her that interesting. Of course now I really think she’s so pretty... that lip shade... the brown eyes... she’s just so adorable! There are so many Tenney’s on eBay and Mercari thanks to the Benefit Sale. It probably shouldn’t, but it honestly makes me cringe so hard to spend $80-$90 on a doll someone got for $40. Maybe I’m being a little silly with that part, though.

Speaking of the Benefit Sale, I have a bit of whining. I think next year, I’d like to connect with someone who would be willing to pick up some items and I can pay the cost + shipping (of course). There were plenty of dolls, mostly Addy, that I was interested in. Now that I have Addy’s Striped Dress in my collection, I really want to put her in it! 

In the meantime, I was thinking of turning my JLY 26 (Eliana) into a historical character from the same time period?? I honestly just want more historical girls in my collection. I could finally work on straightening out Eli’s wig, give her a time-era appropriate hairstyle, and go from there. When I get in my “I need to buy new dolls and I need them NOW!” type of mood, I try to alter a doll that I already own, more times than not it’s someone that I’m bored with, and make them into a new character. It has worked so far with helping me to stay engaged with who I have instead of having the constant need to add more and more dolls (even though I REALLY want to! It’s just, yanno, money is not a very plentiful thing at the moment).

One more random thought: I’ve been seeing a LOT of Chrissa dolls online for reasonable prices! I love shorter haired girls. She’s sparked my interest. I love her Meet outfit.

Happy New Year, Mei!

Mei is having a lovely New Year so far, and it’s only the very first day of Oshōgatsu! Oshōgatsu, Japanese New Year, lasts for three days. She celebrates a traditional Japanese New Year because she lives with her grandparents, who moved to the United States when she was born to help take care of her. She loves spending time with Jiji (her grandfather) and Baba (her grandmother) more than anything.

Last night, Baba made her toshikoshi soba, delicious buckwheat noodles that represent resilience and long life. Baba makes it just the way she likes it, warm and topped with abura-age (fried tofu) and ebi (shrimp). Jiji likes kamaboko (boiled fish paste) with his noodles, which Mei is still learning to love (Mei has a suspicion that Jiji doesn’t like sharing his New Year’s Eve noodles, thus the liberal use of kamaboko, and she would be correct).

This morning, Mei woke up very early for hatsuhinode, the first sunrise of the year. Jiji never lets her miss it. He jokes that with all the trouble Mei gets herself into, she needs to start the new year with as much good luck as possible, just in case. Mei reminds him that Oshōgatsu is all about leaving the old year behind and starting fresh, so for all he knows she could be turning a new leaf.

Jiji says he certainly hoped she wouldn’t, because his life would be terribly boring without all of her misadventures.

After a big breakfast, Mei collects all of her nengajō , New Year’s greeting cards sent from family and friends. She made sure to send hers out early this year. She also loves the new kimono Baba made her, and she can’t wait to wear it for hatsumōde, the first shrine visit of the year.

Children celebrating New Year also receive otoshidama, gifts of money in envelopes called pochibukuro. Mei is still deciding what she wants to spend hers on. Jiji collects books, and she knows he’s been admiring the new release by one of his favorite authors, Ruth Ozeki. She’s had her own eye on some Moomin mini figures.

The pochibukuro feature an animal from the zodiac, and 2022 is the year of the tiger.

Oshōgatsu is Mei’s favorite holiday because of all the time she gets to spend with her loved ones. It doesn’t hurt that her family makes the most amazing food for New Year’s, called osechi-ryōri. Mei’s dad prepares the osechi-ryōri a couple of days before to give everyone a break during the holiday. Mei’s favorites include zōni, a soup of mochi rice cakes, and takoyaki, deep-fried octopus dumplings.

I think Mei is headed off for hatsumōde now, so we’ll bid her goodbye. She wants to thank all of you for spending this time with her, and experiencing how her family rings in the New Year.

Nicks monologue got a lot of laughs. Mainly when he sat down, he had a look on his face like “oh shit what did I just do?”

Nick talking back to Tommy. Calling Tommy out. Honestly cured my anxiety.

“HE WAS PISSING IN THE SINK!” “I do not piss in the sink” Nick walks away from Tommy. Tommy raises his hands and goes ‘oh well’ and sits down.

So if you have seen the OBC bootleg and the promotional video from like 2011 during Frankie’s monologue when he’s yelling at Tommy. JLY starts very stern and calm and Jarrod Specter starts really angry and yells but Jon Wextler is like right in the middle and I loved it.

“Taxly half a mill. In that area.” Poor Nick slams his head on the table.

Tommy looked like he was gonna cry when he was being escorted out by the loan shark because Frankie turned away from him.

“I don’t want anyone involved in our future but me and Frankie!” The light goes onto Nicky. The audience ‘awwww’ s for Nicky.

Nicky almost looks like he’s gonna cry.

It’s quite sad when the number of microphones being pushed off gets smaller and smaller until it’s only Frankie.

How do you think, was the female feature on Back to you Louis decision too? Or did his label just say so because they thought he was not ready for solo/ the song is too open about feelings / anything else, and Louis just had to take it? 'Cause it feels like Bebe has more words in the song than L.

Back to You feels very top 40 in its genre and production. I think a collab is a good way to cross-promote each other (like Steve and Louis did for JHO) between two different fandoms. Louis was probably sent a list of female singers, and Bebe happened to be represented by First Access, Sarah Stennet’s company (who used to manage Zayn and work with Simon Cowell).

I think it was a good decision. Probably because of the collab, it got way more promo than JLY or MY, more live performances, more interviews. It has the highest streams and Shazams of any of his other singles.

This is just a gut feeling, but I feel like BTY was Louis expressing some aggression and frustration— in the negative lyrics and the expletives. His voice still came across pure and sweet. He definitely tried to break out of his nice-boy persona; I think a few print interviews had censored expletives too. That was also a way to make himself stand out from his bandmates, especially Harry, who was promoting HS1 at the same time.

Hi! I think your instincts are right. #25 is super common, and $50 is a bit much if she doesn't come with lots of other stuff. Have you tried making an offer? Mercari lets you do that and most sellers are pretty good about accepting reasonable offers, especially if the item has been posted for sale for a long time. If it were me and nobody wanted my doll at $50, I absolutely would accept an offer of around $40 after a while of not making a sale. Any dollar amount is better than $0 and no interested buyers.

Truly Mes I’d Bring Back for the Revamp!!

I’m vibing with the leaks, but there is a bit of an issue when it comes to colourism. Honestly, I feel like this could have been rectified if they brought back more of the old dolls (especially considering one of those “new” dolls looks like #33).

I was watching the Worldwide iTunes Song Chart and it's sad that Louis being with the most recent single is in the 187 place. Do you think this is because of general public or fans not buying his song? Harry (SOTT 43) Niall (SH 145) Louis (MY 187) Liam (STD 214)

Hi, anon. And James Arthur is at 50 with his new single. 

The WW chart is maybe a little broad, but if you want a clear idea of the situation, look to the drop of 41 positions predicted for the UK charts. After he barely made it into the top 40 in the first place. And that he doesn’t appear to be on any US chart.

But is it surprising? The GP has very little to go on regarding Louis and his music. And talent and good music can only get you so far. You need exposure and you need professional support.

The negligible exposure he got with BTY promo was all too frequently linked to the stunts and an image of questionable appeal, as well as unfavorable comparisons to his band mates and a general message that he’s less talented.  And since the abrupt end to the minimal BTY promo, there’s been nothing to keep him relevant and build interest in him and his music.

Syndicated press about his fatherhood does not do that. Neither do tabloid articles about his girlfriend. The perfunctory article on Billboard and the iHeart channels upon release of his single are not much help, and rendered essentially useless in the wider context. And what little decent he gets is consistently undermined, or the momentum and potential wasted.

The GP doesn’t get any opportunity to know Louis, or remember him as anything except maybe the guy from the one band who’s a dad. They never see him. He’s never guested on a TV talk show; he doesn’t attend industry or celebrity events—or gets press even when he does, like Coachella. He’s never seen with other celebrities and artists. He’s only had a handful of performances, and didn’t get the same publicity and billing as the others for iHeart Festival. He hasn’t participated in any profile raising initiatives, or done any viral videos of any sort. He didn’t even get billboards or posters, except I think one in Canada.

And the GP haven‘t heard him much, either, since the plug was pulled on BTY. JLY got no radio support. And MY… has Capital played it? Has it been added to the BBC playlist?

And the bare minimum announcement there was literally days before MY dropped… did that even reach the GP?

So, in answer to your question, I think a big part of it is definitely that the GP is not very aware of Louis. And when they are made aware of him, it’s frequently in a negative way, or irrelevant to him as an artist.

I would hope that his fans that have the means will have bought the single, but, despite the worldwide trends on Twitter in moments of especial outrage, I think it’s undeniable that his fan base has been decimated through concerted efforts. And also through natural circumstance with all the boys going solo.

And a dedicated fan base is important, but it can only get you so far. Louis needs to get fair treatment, label support, management and PR looking out for his best interests. Right now, to even compare OT3 to Louis… they are in completely different spheres. :|

But we can make a difference, through streaming and requesting, and spreading the word as we can, etc. Keep supporting Louis!
