Song Review: Brittany Haas and Friends - “Pony Boy” (Live, Sept. 15, 2024)

Singing Mark Simos’ song and playing lead fiddle, Brittany Haas embodied “Pony Boy” at the 2024 Seagrass Music Festival in Maine.

Leading a temporary band of Friends including mandolinist and harmony vocalist Joe K. Walsh, guitarist Yann Falquet and bassist Aidan O’Donnell, Haas used the Sept. 15 performance to demonstrate that although she is a band woman, a member of Punch Brothers, Hawktail and Crooked Still, she’s got the chops and pipes to be a frontwoman.

Perhaps even more importantly, this jaunty little number, just released on pro-shot video, illustrates Haas’ undying commitment to serving the music in whatever capacity.

A solution to hunger and food waste

France has a lot of problems (colonialism, Islamophobia, to name a few). In sustainable ventures, however, France has taken a progressive approach. Since 2016, France has banned supermarkets from throwing away unsold food. Instead of going to a landfill, the produce is handed over to NGOs and charities to donate. According to CBS correspondent Chris Livesay,

"Every morning, more than 2,700 supermarkets send nearly out-of-date food to nearly 80 warehouses around the country, rescuing 46,000 tons a year that would otherwise be thrown away".

To incentivize businesses further, markets that donate unsold groceries are given tax benefits to offset the loss of the unsellable merchandise. This is massive, considering that many grocery stores /destroyed/ food to dissuade dumpster-divers. As in, pouring-bleach-on-edible-food destroying food. In fact, you may have seen videos pop up of employees at retailers such as Ulta, Coach, Burberry (and far, far more) cutting, shredding, or even burning unsold ,merchandise and returns in order to avoid lessening "brand reputation", ie. poor people making their products "look cheap". The same is done with food, except instead of keeping new Nikes off the feet of an opportunistic passerby, grocery giants prefer food to get wasted than allow someone to nick stale bread from their trash bins.

Maybe I'm jaded from spending my teenage years working at a sandwich franchise that would fire workers for taking rock-hard cookies home instead of throwing them out.

It must be said that while the French were innovators with this law, some chains in the US are following suit. I worked at Trader Joe's for some time and was pleasantly surprised with their food waste reduction programs. My particular store donated literal tons of food to Philabundance the year that I worked there. For the food that was too nasty to donate, huge compost bins were collected weekly to go to local farms. Costco, Whole Foods, Aldi's, and Target similarly donate unsold produce, with varied effort.

As with all good things, there are drawbacks. Sometimes, the stores donate moldy or otherwise rotten food to game the system, making more work for the volunteers who sort donations. The law also applies only to grocery stores; in France, the agricultural sector is responsible for more food waste than retail. There is no law in place regulating the waste in agriculture, nor in restaurants. But, you gotta admit, it's better than in the US where no such law exists for any sector...

The media's rotten reporting on Biden's social and climate bill (and it's not just Fox News)

Friends, I recently started a newsletter on power, politics, and the economy. The ambitious social and climate legislation now working its way through Congress will be enacted in some form. But its agonizing journey to date reveals the rotten job done by the media that’s supposed to inform Americans about our democracy.

Last week, the New York Times described the delay in House Democrats’ approval of the infrastructure bill as caused by a “liberal revolt.” On Saturday it reported that Biden had “thrown in” with his party’s “left” rather than its “center,” thereby “leaving his agenda in doubt.” This is pure rubbish. There was no “liberal revolt” and there’s no standoff in the party between a leftwing fringe and a larger center. The vast majority of Democratic lawmakers in both the House and Senate support Biden’s agenda. The only “doubt” comes from two Democratic senators, Arizona’s Kyrsten Sinema and West Virginia’s Joe Manchin. Passage of the infrastructure bill was held up in the House last weekend because Sinema and Manchin wouldn’t negotiate the size of the social and climate bill that was supposed to be attached to it. The media describes Sinema and Manchin as “moderates” but they’re to the right of the rest of the party. If they’re “moderates,” does that make most Democratic lawmakers “extremists?” And why does the media continue to characterize them as “pragmatic” when, as Joan Walsh of The Nation points out, “it’s actually the progressives who have compromised; they are the pragmatists.” You can see the same bias in how Biden’s social and climate bill is being described. The media almost never mentions what’s in it – a slew of extraordinarily popular items including childcare, pre-K, community college, paid family leave, child tax credits, and measures to slow climate change. Instead, almost the sole media focus is on how much it would cost. “Biden’s 3.5 trillion package” is the standard description. Even this is wrong because the $3.5 trillion is spread over 10 years, making it $350 billion per year – about half of what we spend each year on national defense. To make matters worse, the media’s focus on the bill’s cost ignores the larger costs of not passing it. 

Millions of people without childcare, for example, can’t join the labor force – costing the economy tens of billions each year. Young people who can’t afford community college end up costing the economy vast sums in terms of lost productivity and whatever public assistance they may need down the line. If we don’t slow climate change, we’ll be spending hundreds of billions more per year dealing with worsening wildfires, floods, and droughts. If we don’t begin to reverse widening inequality, half of America won’t be able to buy the goods and services the economy produces. Talk about costs. These biases in the mainstream media aren’t the result of intentional decisions among publishers, editors and writers to favor the status quo over progressive change. They simply reflect the dominant views of the American establishment, as seen mainly through the lenses of New York and Washington. The establishment supports the status quo and puts a high burden of proof on those seeking fundamental change because it is the establishment. Yet as a result, the mainstream media is doing a rotten job informing America about one of the most important pieces of legislation to come along in decades, at a time in our nation’s history when fundamental change is badly needed. Theaster Gates first encountered creativity in the music of Black churches on his journey to becoming an urban planner, potter, and artist. Gates creates sculptures out of clay, tar, and renovated buildings, transforming the raw material of the South Side into radically reimagined vessels of opportunity for the community.

Establishing a virtuous circle between fine art and social progress, Gates strips dilapidated buildings of their components, transforming those elements into sculptures that act as bonds or investments, the proceeds of which are used to finance the rehabilitation of entire city blocks. Many of the artist’s works evoke his African-American identity and the broader struggle for civil rights, from sculptures incorporating fire hoses, to events organized around soul food, and choral performances by the experimental musical ensemble Black Monks of Mississippi, led by Gates himself.

A little charmer of a movie starring the ever-watchable Kevin Kline. I’ll admit I’m pretty old-fashioned and, even in today’s evil world, I cling to the hope there are still good-hearted people out there somewhere. This is one of those movies keeping that hope alive. Let the soft side of you out and enjoy this film.
