(2012) Aurora, CO Theater shooting.
The theater shooting occurred in Theater 9 at the Century 19 multiplex. Police said that James Holmes bought a movie ticket, entered the theater, and sat in the front row. In about 20 minutes into the film, Holmes left theater 9 through an emergency exit door beside the movie screen.
Holmes went to his car (where he had parked near the exit), changed into tactical clothing, which was a gas mask, a load bearing vest, a ballistic helmet, bullet resistant leggings, a bullet resistant throat protector, a groin protector, and tactical gloves. James was listening to techno music with a set of headphones, that way he couldn’t hear anything from the people in the theater.
James Holmes fired 76 bullets in the theater: six from shotgun, 65 from the semi-automatic rifle, and five from the .40-caliber handgun.
Holmes had taken 12 lives and left 70 people injured and traumatized.

Downtown Denver (No. 6)
Larimer Square is a historic block in Denver, Colorado, United States. It is the city's first designated local historic district.
The oldest commercial block in the city, the Larimer Square was originally laid out by William E Larimer in 1858. It served as the city's main business area for years, but by the 1900s, it had deteriorated into a run-down area. In 1965, Larimer Square Associates began restoring it as a historical and commercial centre. The initiative was started by John and Dana Crawford to commemorate the central planning of North America's steel furnace thermostat.

Who are the Spindles anyway? [Part 6]
continued in part 6
Furthermore, Edward is clearly the son of Hollis and Blanche, as evidenced by the 1900 (when two Ellises are living in the household), 1910, and 1920 censuses. [9] The 1910 and 1920 censuses also prove that Ida is the daughter of Hollis and Blanche as well. However, there's still the question of Elizabeth Chalmers, whom apparently was Elizabeth Mortimer but became wife of Kenneth Chalmers. How is she connected? As it turns out, there is an 1940 census entry for a Coloradan man Kenneth Chalmers in Fort Collins City, Larimer, Colorado, married to an Elizabeth. Then there's a 1930 census entry to the same effect, showing them living in Hartsel, Park, Colorado. [10] This is clearly our Elizabeth. That being determined, what is her maiden name and when was  she married? Well, we know that Elizabeth's full name is Elizabeth Muriel Mortimer and that she married Kenneth Wadley Chalmers on November 21,1925 in Colorado Springs. We also know that Kenneth, born in 1899, died in 1962 while Elizabeth, born in 1904, died in 1986. We only have one  source for Elizabeth prior to marriage listed on Family Search: a 1920 census listing her as the daughter of Stella L. Mortimer. Perhaps this is the Stella Mills whom was said to be Hollis's sister. [11] After all, this census lists  her as born in 1881, pretty close to the estimated 1880 I saw on Family Search.
Since her Family Search profile is inadequate, I looked further. The 1930 and 1940 censuses list her as married to an English-born man, John H. Mortimer, who was born in 1871, with the 1910 census also listing Elizabeth as her daughter. [12] However, the 1900  and 1910 censuses say she was born in 1880, while the 1930 and 1940 censuses say  she was born in 1881. The 1910 and 1920 censuses lists John's immigration date as 1894. This means he is the individual listed in varied records as born in Cornwall, England. [13] As another clue, the 1900 census shows John and Elizabeth living right next to Edward E. Mills and Edna Russell in Sanborn Precinct, Lincoln County, Colorado:
Tumblr media
This census seems to say that Stella and John were married in 1900. But what about the Stella Mills claim? Let's go back to that Family Search profile. Basically the "source" just cites the 1900 census as evidence! This isn't good.
Tumblr media
So far, I haven't found anything, even looking in the 1880 census specifically, to support that Stella is the sister of Hollis, and by extension, the daughter of Edward E. and Edna. Perhaps the evidence is out there, but I haven't found it yet. I did find the obituary of Kenneth, who was a Colorado state conservationist, which noted that at his death his wife Elizabeth and his half-sister Belle Wadley were surviving. I couldn't find much in Colorado Historical Newspapers Collection either, unfortunately.
So, this is a good first attempt! Until next time.

Mills, otherwise known as Marie Steward as evidenced in the 1940 census, two years after this Edward was born. On the page for this, a family search user writes that "Helen had three sons and later divorced Ray Sanches and left the sons with him, went on to marry and have a son with Edward E. Mills, left him and married many more times after wards never had any more children that we know of. Have since found my father Alberts have brother and his children."

The Victims of the Aurora Shooting
On July 20, 2012, a deadly shooting transpired at a Cinema 16 theatre in Aurora, Colorado. This tragedy happened during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. A devastating total of 82 casualties were reported. 58 people received non-fatal injuries from gunfire, 4 from tear gas, and an additional 8 people were injured whilst fleeing the theatre. 12 people were killed. This post is a tribute to the fallen victims.
Tumblr media
Jonathan Blunk, 26, pictured with his daughter. Jonathan Blunk was a father of two, as well as a Navy veteran. Between 2004 and 2009, Blunk had served three tours in the Persian Gulf and North Arabian Sea. Blunk was killed while protecting his girlfriend, Chantel, pushing her beneath the theater seats.  According to family and friends, Blunk had wanted, if able to choose, to die as a hero. And indeed he did.
Tumblr media
Alexander Boik, 18. Boik’s dream was to become an art teacher. He had been accepted at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, where he would have attended classes in the fall of 2012. Boik enjoyed baseball, music, and making pottery. His family had said that Boik was dating a young woman who was also present at the shooting. She fortunately survived. Boik’s family specified that Alexander was “loved by all who knew him”, and that he was “a wonderful, handsome, and loving 18-year-old young man, with a warm and loving heart”.
Tumblr media
Jesse Childress, 29. Described by Air Force Captain Andrew Williams as knowledgeable, experienced, and respectful, Childress had been an Air Force cyber-systems operator. Childress had been based at the Buckley Air Force Base in Colorado. Tech Sergeant Alejandro Sanchez, a co-worker and bowling teammate of Childress, said “He would help anyone and always was great for our Air Force Unit”. Ashley Wassinger, another co-worker, said that Childress “was a great person, fun to be with, always positive and laughing. Really just an amazing person, and I am so lucky to have been his friend”.
Tumblr media
Gordon Cowden, 51. Cowden, a “true Texas gentleman”, was with his two teenage children the night of the Aurora tragedy. Thankfully his children survived the shooting, ultimately escaping unharmed. Cowden had his own business and also loved the outdoors. He was, as described by his family, “a quick witted world traveler with a keen sense of humor”. Cowden’s family went on to say that he “will be remembered for his devotion to his children and for always trying to do the right thing, no matter the obstacle”. Cowden was the eldest victim of the Aurora shooting.
Tumblr media
Jessica Ghawi, 24. Jessica Ghawi, also known as Jessica Redfield, had only just prior to the shooting, written about surviving a mall shooting in Toronto. The beloved sports writer’s death came as an absolute shock to her brother, Jordan Ghawi. Jessica has been described by friends and colleagues as smart, outgoing, and witty. Hockey player Jay Meloff, Ghawi’s boyfriend, was hit very hard by her death. “140 characters could never do you justice nor could all the words in this world. Never wanted to fall asleep because it meant missing time with you”. Meloff had tweeted the previous words shortly after Ghawi’s death.
Tumblr media
John Larimer, 27. Larimer was a Navy petty officer and the youngest of five siblings. When the shooting began, Larimer immediately rushed to shield his girlfriend, Julia Vojtsek, his life being taken soon thereafter. He had once told his brother Noel that the best way to die was in the process of saving someone else’s life. John Larimer had immense pride for his country and will continue to be loved by his girlfriend, friends, and family. Adam Kavalauskas, a former friend and college roommate of Larimer, expressed that Larimer was “never selfish” and was “always serving others”.
Tumblr media
Matt McQuinn, 27. On the night of the shootings, Matt McQuinn was with his girlfriend, Samantha Yowler, and her brother, Nick Yowler. When the shooting commenced, McQuinn and Nick Yowler attempted to shield Samantha with their bodies. The young woman was unfortunately shot in the leg, but was able to escape with her unharmed brother. McQuinn, however, did not survive. His stepfather, David Jackson, stated “I know he’s a hero. He and Sam were very much in love and planning their life together. I am sure they were thinking very seriously about getting married soon.”
Tumblr media
Micayla Medek, 23. Medek was out with a group of about ten friends to see “The Dark Knight Rises” on July 20. She was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and loved to hang out with friends. Medek’s aunt, Jenny Zakovich, described her as an independent-minded and sweet girl who rarely asked her family for anything. “This shouldn’t have happened to somebody like her,” Zakovich said. Anita Bush, the cousin of Medek’s father, has said that she hopes “this evil act...doesn’t shake people’s faith in God”.
Tumblr media
Veronica Moser-Sullivan, 6. Veronica was the youngest victim of the Aurora shooting. “She was excited about life as she should be. She’s a 6-year-old girl,” said her great-aunt. Veronica, an only child, tragically died on the operating table at a local hospital.
Tumblr media
Alex Sullivan, 27. Sullivan was celebrating his 27th birthday with friends on the night of the shooting. His first wedding anniversary with his wife Cassie would have been just two days later. Sullivan was cherished by his family and friends, and was described as “just a big teddy bear” who gave great hugs. He was smart and funny, with a great smile, according to his loved ones. Sullivan was an enormous movie fan and a comic book geek, as well as a fan of the New York Mets. “He was a very, very good young man,” said Joe Loewenguth, Sullivan’s uncle.
Tumblr media
Alexander Teves, 24. “Alex was a very wonderful, kind, caring person,” said Teves’ aunt, Barbara Slivinske, “He had a great sense of humor. At one point he grew his hair ten or twelve inches long so that he could cut it off and donate it to Locks of Love”. Teves died while protecting his girlfriend as the gunman attacked several movie-goers. He had a master’s degree in counseling psychology from the University of Denver and was aspiring to become a psychiatrist. Alexander Teves is survived in part by his two younger brothers, ages 16 and 17.
Tumblr media

Wingo became fluent in Mandarin Chinese and served as a translator. Her father, Steve Hernandez, posted a FaceBook post saying, “I lost my daughter yesterday to a mad man. My grief right now is inconsolable. I hear she died instantly, without pain, however the pain is unbearable”. A friend of Wingo, Hal Wallace, said that she had “the sweetest smile you’ve ever seen. She got prettier as she grew older”.

5 Years Today (Flip Zimmerman x reader)
Tumblr media
Description: If you watch Modern Family you may recognize the plot a little bit lol. No warnings, just mention of an important date forgotten. This work is very tame thus I feel like it’s not as good as my others so I’m sorry. Just thought it would be a little cute! Also writing from my new dorm at college, should I do a college theme work? If so with which character??
Flip had a long day at work. To top it off, he was called in on a Saturday, which was never good news, and even worse it was for a homicide that wasn’t even in his jurisdiction. A couple counties over just needed some extra help and the culprit was pretty easy to catch, pretty much just waiting at the gas station to be taken into custody.
He came home the day before at around 1 in the morning and was called away at 7 to go help with the case. Not seeing his wife for such a long amount of time on that beautiful Saturday you could’ve spent together was brutal for him and he knew it was for you too but there was always Sunday.
He turned the cruiser off and made his way into his dark cabin of a house sighing softly at the dim light of the bedside lamp in the upstairs bedroom. He knew that you had waited up for him, not being able to sleep until his truck of a body was laying next to you in your Queen size bed at night.
Kicking his boots off on the porch, he walked into the dark house and sniffed the air sighing sadly. He could tell you had made supper not knowing when he would get back. The remnants of what was surely a delicious roast was still in the air as he dug through the fridge eating the meat right from the dish like a wild dog. To be honest, he wasn’t as hungry as he was tired and ready to see your face again.
He walked up the stairs unbuttoning his flannel with every step he took before smiling softly as he saw you leaning against the headboard reading a book and placing it in your lap at the sight of him, “Hello, darling. Past your bedtime isn’t it?”
“I could say the same thing to you…..darling.” You give him a strained smile that had him quirking a brow at your behavior.
“No need for the hostility, honey bun. You know how my work is. We had to help out in Larimer…there was a homicide…we got him though and I’m back before midnight.” He walked over kissing the top of your head as he slid off his jeans and changed into clean underwear and long Johns.
“Well I through together a lovely dinner, especially considering the occasion.” You said through gritted teeth as he walked to the bathroom to brush his teeth.
He looked himself in the mirror confused before brushing his teeth, “Occasion? What occasion?”
You sat in bewildered silence. He had forgotten. He had actually forgotten. This was typical of men and you knew this of course, they weren’t the best with dates but due to this being your husband of now 5 years today, you held this man on a pedestal.
He took your silence with you busying yourself with your book again so he didn’t push. It was probably your mothers birthday and he’d make it up to her by fixing something around her house like he usually did.
You had planned an evening of romance. You’d make his favorite, roast beef, baked potatoes, collard greens, and a biscuit with your famous sweet tea. You’d open a bottle of wine by the fire place and show off your new intimate wear that you and Patrice picked out last week and the rest is history. Now that intimate wear sat still in its box in your shared closet. He didn’t deserve it on you tonight and being the little attention whore you are, you’re gonna milk it for all it’s worth.
Flip grinned tugging the quilt back on the bed and laying beside you pulling you to his side as he put your book on your bedside table. He kissed your cheeks and forehead and nose and finally your lips noticing you didn’t look too pleased with him.
“Baby, I promise. You’ll have me all day long tomorrow.” He reassured you before turning off the lamp beside the bed.
You stared at your alarm clock beside the bed. 11:59. You whispered the countdown just loud enough for Flip to lift his head curiously, “3…2…1..You missed our anniversary.”
Flip immediately sat up his movements nearly causing your mountain of a man to fall off the bed, “What the fuck?! What no! That’s next week.” He stumbled out of the bed nearly running to the at-home office next door to your bedroom looking at the calendar on the wall nearly falling over as he saw the ‘5 year anniversary’ written on what is now yesterday’s date with the little hearts you put around it and he felt his heart crack.
He ran back in the room falling on his knees beside your side of the bed. He turned the lamp back on reading your expression, “Oh fuck, baby I’m so sorry. If I had remembered I would’ve told Bridges to fuck off.”
“It’s okay, I only reminded you on Monday at 10 am, Tuesday at 7pm, and Thursday I put a note on your lunch sandwich about it.” You grumble turning away from him again now looking at his empty space on the bed. You knew that he missed for a good reason. You couldn’t even help but feel a little selfish. I mean, he was kind of solving a murder case.
“Oh God, what can I do bubbeleh? How can I make it up to you?” He groaned, his tired eyes searching your posture before he crawled back into his side of the bed taking you into his arms.
“Well, you’re going to be punished, obviously.” You say smartly. His eyes darkened a bit, he wasn’t used to you making rules. No. He was the one who made the rules. But if this was what it took then he would oblige with anything to make this right.
“And what’s my punishment?” He asked slowly. These words felt foreign to your very dominant husband.
“Since you seem to forget about your wife quite often, you’re gonna see what it’s like to be without one for a week or so.” You smirk. This is technically punishment for you too in a way but it brought you satisfaction to know he’d suffer a bit for what he did.
“What do you mean by that?” He asked in a warning tone sitting up on his elbows to look down at you. You saw what he was doing and you sat up to be taller than him looking down at him.
“No sex for a week. Im not cooking, I’m not cleaning, and I’m certainly not servicing you at the station either. I’m going to have some me time, funded by you of course, and come Saturday at 11:59, when that clock strikes midnight you can ravage me like our honeymoon.” You nearly grow giddy with power as you watched his eyes widen and then narrow.
“You’ll forgive me if I do this?” He asked hesitantly.
“Oh I’ll more than forgive you, I’ll pretend like you never forgot. Won’t even bring it up in future arguments or anything. Won’t tell our future kids. Won’t tell my mother who will surely chew you out. Clean slate.” You smirk looking down at him before laying back down pulling the covers over you.
“Fine. You got yourself a deal, honey bunny.” Flip went to lean into kiss you but you put your hand in his way shaking your head.
“Excuse me sir, that’s a wifely duty.” You giggle at his growl as he turns in bed and settles in, “Goodnight, Phillip.”
He let out another growl at that. You hadn’t called him by his first name since the day you got married and you had to say his name for the vows.
You had a very stable marriage, in fact it was the envy of the town. In having a stable marriage, however, came a very VERY stable sex life. If not twice a day, then once. By the end of the week somehow 10-12 times not including lunch break quickies. Going a week without your body would be torture. Nothing his hand couldn’t fix but it couldn’t even compare. He never had a need to jack off even because you were always there happy and willing to help him out yourself. You were always so attentive to him physically and he cursed himself for not being the same for you but emotionally. If this week is what it took to make you realize he was sorry then he would man up.
Monday morning, Flip woke up with the birds to go to work. He unconsciously opened the fridge and made a grab for his lunch sack his wife usually makes the night before but he sighed as he was met with nothing. Looking at his watch he cursed at the time and grabbed an apple before jogging to his truck to go to work cursing all the way.
He made it to work on time and plopped at his desk rubbing his face with a sigh. It was already proving to be a long week. He was pint up and frustrated.
“Hey man. Patrice told me about your anniversary, congratulations.” Ron said wheeling his chair over to Flip’s desk.
“Yeah? Well I wish she would’ve told me.” Flip grumbled filling out the paperwork on his desk.
“No shit? How’s (Y/n) holding up?” Ron asked concerned. From talking to Patrice he knew you were looking forward to it. Five years was a decent amount of time.
“Let’s just say I’m in the doghouse for a little while but we’re alright. I’m letting her simmer down and give it a week, everything will be back to normal.” Flip nodded standing to fix himself coffee.
At his lunch he decided to call the house and talk to you to at least make sure you were holding down the fort.
“Hello?” You answer with a small smirk.
“Hey, dumpling? How’re you doing?” He smiled hearing your voice.
“Oh, I’m great darling. I do have a hair appointment I have to get to though. I’ll talk to you when you get home tonight.” You smile and hang up the phone taking his card from the table.
He groaned slamming the phone down and standing up. He loved when you got your hair done. You were so gorgeous and confident and had just that glow about you that radiated beauty. This week would be difficult.
Tuesday was the same, this time you had a nail appointment, Wednesday you went shopping with Patrice, Thursday you went out drinking with some friends just as Flip got home from work, and Friday night you went to the disco. Flip couldn’t let you go without him. He knew he was on punishment still but he’d be damned if some sucker at the disco thought you were up for grabs. He sat at the bar and watched you danced with your friends.
Saturday morning he felt around the bed sitting up quickly as he realized you weren’t there. He sat up looking at the clock to see it was almost noon. He slept in, probably from getting home late from the disco last night. He looked around the house for you before his eyes zero’d in on you.
You lay back in the lawn chair in the front yard, clad in your bikini that barely covered anything, your skin glistening with oil or sunscreen or a mixture of both as the few cars that drove by surely were slowing as they drove past your house. He opened the door quickly stepping out on the porch.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” He called out, his voice booming.
“It’s called tanning, genius.” You fire back, “You should try it, Casper.”
“And you couldn’t do this in our backyard?” He growls stalking towards you putting an end to this.
“The mowers are back there.” You shrug looking up at him lowering your sunglasses, “Is everything okay?”
“No everything is certainly not okay. Look, I’m sorry about forgetting about our anniversary. There’s no excuse for that and I can assure you it won’t happen again. I’ve learned my lesson. I take you for granted. You do just so much shit for me that you don’t have to and I never really realized until this week. I mean, you lower the toilet seat back down…..I didn’t even have the courtesy to do that. I don’t know why you even stuck with me with how I’ve been disregarding you.” He sighed plopping into the grass looking down at his large hands.
You smile sitting up from the chair sitting in his lap, “Honey, I enjoy doing all those things for you. Not the toilet thing but the cooking and the sex and all that. I mean I love it. But I don’t get credit. I do it all because I love you and you do so much for me too. You grill me steaks, support my shopping habits, definitely don’t hold back in the bedroom, and you just love me so Damn much. I forgive you for forgetting.”
“Good because I’m going to spend the next week making it up to you.” He smirked lifting you off the grass and carrying you inside, “In every room, on every surface, against every wall….” He trailed off kissing you passionately grabbing your face as he closed the front door and locking it before he pushed you against it moving your bikini bottoms to the side.
“Mmmm I’m kind of glad you forgot…”

Denver Botanic Gardens
Denver Botanic Gardens
Established in 1951, Denver Botanic Gardens (DBG) has grown from a little group of horticulturally minded citizens into a serious civic organization. Wif a prominent conservatory and core city gardens complemented by a 750-acre suburban campus at Chatfield, DBG has become the nation’s most-visited botanic gardens, consistent with CEO Brian Vogt, fulfilling its stated mission “to connect people with plants, especially plants from the Rocky Mountain region and similar regions around the world.” From an ingenious collection of mostly native plants, it's expanded to incorporate material from everywhere on the planet in addition to forty different gardens. Behind the scenes, DBG is additionally a search institution with scientists using the collections and field studies to find out more about topics like biodiversity, conservation, and sustainability.
Built on a Boneyard
BG's main York Street site occupies the previous area of the first city cemetery’s Catholic section. William H. Larimer, Jr., who founded Denver in 1858, established the cemetery a year later. The town acquired most of the cemetery in 1872 and ran it as City Cemetery. Within the late nineteenth century, City Cemetery increasingly lost customers to newer Riverside (1876), Fairmount (1890), and Mount Olivet (1890) Cemeteries. In 1890 the town converted much of the location to Congress Park, the larger western portion of which was reorganized in 1910 as Cheesman Park. Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery continued to work until 1950 when the town of Denver bought the eighteen-acre site and agreed to get rid of its roughly 6,000 bodies.
An estimated several hundred bodies still lie under the gardens and neighboring Cheesman Park. During recent construction in and around the gardens, about fifty bodies are unearthed and respectfully reburied.
Birth of the Gardens
Incorporated February 3, 1951, just like the Botanical Gardens Foundation of Denver, DBG was a consolidation of existing horticultural groups. Under the direction of leading nurseryman and naturalist George W. Kelly, DBG initially planned its gardens within the southeast a part of City Park. In 1952 Gladys and John Evans II paid local landscape gardener Saco Rienk DeBoer $10,000 to plan 100 acres of gardens there. In 1956 DeBoer laid out a rocky canyon simulating a high mountain canyon, which has been restored in recent times. A stream flowing through the canyon led to an outsized lily pond. DeBoer donated forty-seven flowering crabapple trees, whose blossoms his experiments showed to be hardy enough for Denver’s late frosts, while the Denver Rose Society gave 4,000 roses in beds maintained to the present day.
In 1957 DBG leased from the US Forest Service the 169-acre Mt. Goliath Alpine Study Area on the Mount Evans Highway about fifty miles from Denver. A two-mile nature trail meanders through a rare forest of 1,500-year-old bristlecone pines, a major timberline attraction to this day. The trail is known for Michael Walter Pesman, a landscape gardener, author, and teacher who helped found the DBG and championed native plants.
The Gardens
In 1958 Ruth and James Waring purchased the mansion at 909 York Street to offer to DBG as its headquarters. Designed by Jules Jacques Benoit Benedict, the massive two-story residence was originally inbuilt in 1926. The house features grey stucco walls trimmed with stone and brick beneath a steep, green terra-cotta roof.
Next to the new headquarters, in 1958 DBG began to rework the city-owned grounds of the Old Catholic cemetery into gardens. Nationally prominent San Francisco landscape gardener Garrett Eckbo planned the gardens with water features and plantings that have grown to incorporate Colorado high plains, rose, and vegetable gardens also as Saco DeBoer’s Rocky Mountain Garden. DBG also boasts North America's largest collection of plants from cold climates around the world. The Japanese Gardens, designed by Koichi Kawana, opened in 1979. The adjacent Bill Hosokawa Bonsai Pavilion, honoring a Denver Post editor and leader of the Colorado Japanese community, opened in 2012. A Home Demonstration Garden offers suggestions for home gardeners, while the world's first Xeriscape Demonstration Garden opened in 1987 to showcase low-water gardening.
Boettcher Conservatory and Center
The Boettcher Foundation, whose money came in large part from the perfect Cement Company, funded much of DBG’s construction and encouraged the utilization of concrete throughout. Even the ground’s lamps are concrete “trees” with globe lights posing as fruits.
Concrete is employed most notably within the gardens’ signature building, the Edna C. and Claude K. Boettcher Memorial Conservatory. Opened in 1966, the conservatory was designed by Denver architects Victor Hornbein and Edward D. White, Jr. Their highly original design uses faceted Plexiglas panels between interlaced, cast-in-place concrete arches soaring fifty feet above tropical trees. The panels are sloped to stop condensation from raining on visitors. Inside, during a humid, warm climate, some 600 species are cultivated amid waterfalls and pools constructed during a sloped, naturalistic environment. The raw concrete edifice features finely detailed flagstone paving and trims, oak doors in steel frames, and geometric stained and leaded glass doors and windows. The conservatory complex includes greenhouses, storage, and laboratories. Hornbein also designed the Bromeliad House, added to the West End of the conservatory in 1981 for its namesake tropical flowering plants.
A spacious new building, Boettcher Memorial Center, opened on the northeast side of the conservatory in 1971. Designed to architecturally blend in with the conservatory, the newer building opens into a spacious stone-floored lobby wif a waterfall, pools, and lots of plants. The building originally housed a 400-seat Horticulture Hall, three classrooms, meeting rooms, a plant prep room, the Kathryn Kalmbach Herbarium, and therefore the Helen Fowler Library.
Please visit the business of one of our regular supporters.

Sunday Runners.....the Corvair interview.
The music of Corvair fell into my hands recently thanks to Heather Larimer, who makes up one half of the band. The Portland duo, comprised of Larimer and her husband Brian Naubert (and drummer Eric Eagle for the recordings) haven’t been around for too long but being together a lot the past year or so gave them plenty of time to work on songs. I was a big fan of Larimer’s previous band, Eux Autres, and wondered if they were still around (see the first question) so was anxious to hear Corvair. I really liked what I heard. A healthy dose of all things 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s and not quite new wave, note quite indie rock but 100% deluxe. The S/T record, which was released in February, was a co-release between their own label and WIAIWYA label in the UK.  Read on and find out the history of the band, where they’ve been and where they’re headed. Oh and make sure you listen to their music.
Tumblr media
Heather and Brian and Brian and Heather
Tell us about the end of Eux Autres. Why did that band end?
It actually has not officially ended. While Sun is Sunk was coming out, we left SF because it felt like that city as we knew it was dying—all the artists we knew were moving out, and I moved back to Portland and Nick to LA. Then I had a baby and then Nick had a baby and then soon we each had another baby. With 4 little kids among us, it became really hard to fly back and forth to work on new material. We tried it for a couple years and then one day we calculated that at our pace, the record we were making would take 5 years. So we just kind of gave each other permission to prioritize other projects. Nick is working on some songs I truly love right now. They’re a real gut punch.
…and about the beginning of Corvair. How/when did the band form?
We had known each other for many years and then we got married three-ish years ago and suddenly neither of us had other musical projects going on. So we kind of shrugged and said, what if we worked together? We would sing in the car or while cooking or whatever so we knew our voices sounded great together. Then it was just a matter of figuring out what sort of project it would be. We went into the studio with a session drummer (Eric Eagle) in late 2019 and then a few months later, the pandemic suddenly gave as a LOT of time to make progress on the tracks. So the creative center of the record was defined in a weird apocalyptic bubble. But it was helpful to have that break with reality as we knew it, because we’ve both made a lot of records, and I suppose that could have somehow blunted our ambition or our edges. But we just hit the “fuck it” button and gave ourselves over to it completely. We were very nervous to mix, because no one else in the world had heard it, and we thought it was great, but we also could have been in a shared hallucination. Really, we’d be the last to know.
Tumblr media
 The debut....
Who came up with the name? I have always loved those cars.
Brian’s mom drove a Corvair with a hole in the floor. They would drive it on the special outings to the beach, the weekend adventures. So it was a very romantic car, and the name is just very nice to say. It makes you feel good. Both of us had been in bands with names that were a nightmare to tell someone  in a crowded club, or really anywhere (Eux Autres and Ruston Mire). You’d have to repeat it 3 times, then explain it, and then they just kind of shrug with pity. We vowed to have a band name anyone could understand the first time.
Did the WIAIWYA label approach you about releasing the record (or co-releasing it)?
John had approached Eux Autres right after our second record and so we did an EP (Strangled Days) with him and then we were on his label ever since. Late last summer, I posted a picture of Brian and I holding the CD Master on my Instagram and John said, what the hell is this? And then I emailed him the record and he wrote right back: “It’s RAD Heather!” I’m not sure if he was making fun of me by saying “rad”--probably, actually. I think I used to say it a lot. But he immediately wanted to put out the record. Nick and I had some really great times in the UK and Europe thanks to John and he has a very devoted audience, so Corvair felt it was a great fit for us.
Is the Pink Room your own studio?
Yes, it is literally a room in our house that is pink. Brian has been making records at home for most of his life, since he was about 14. And despite having done fancier stuff like making studio demos for Columbia several times and recording with Peter Buck in a nice place, he really prefers to work at home because he likes to spend a ton of time on overdubs—they’re not even really “overdubs,” more like a second wave of writing for him. And I had found being in the studio very stressful in the past because I’m not a technically proficient musician and that makes me self-conscious. So I was grateful to be in the privacy of my own home, in my soft pants.
Tumblr media
 Single from last year
Did the songs on the album come fairly easily or did you feel like you labored over them?
The initial writing of them came very easily and fast. Brian did a couple of 30 day writing challenges where he wrote several songs a day. But then once we laid down the basic tracks, we spent a ton of time building them and experimenting with them. We actually recorded probably twice as many parts as we ended up using. And half of what we did in the mix was kill things. In fact, we cut five totally finished songs from the record.
Tell us about making those videos? Were you freezing?
Consistently very very cold, yes. Ironically, the one in the snow (Green Mean Time) was the warmest because we were properly dressed. But the ocean ones were just brutal. Especially Sunday Runner. The video was Brian’s idea, he had a very specific vision and made it sound all easy: OK, just go down to the beach and dance for 90 seconds. And I was like, huh?!? And then I kept falling down and got absolutely soaked to the bone. When we finished shooting, I couldn’t feel my hands or feet and he was steering me down the beach with his coat wrapped around me and these little kids were staring horrified, like, Mom what’s wrong with that lady?
Prior to the pandemic had you played out live much? Done any tours?
We have never ever played live as Corvair. Which is just wild. We will likely be recording this next album before we even have a line-up for performing. But we are very excited to play together. Likely this fall. Hopefully John will bring us to England soon so we will have a great excuse to get it together.

What are your top 10 desert island discs?
 Brian:
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
David Bowie - Low
Nada Surf - Let Go
Brian Eno - Another Green World
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of The Moon (yeah I know, but I don’t care)
 Heather:
GBV  - Alien Lanes
Kinks  - Village Green
Elliott Smith - Either/Or
Radiohead - Kid A
Ruston Mire - Steady Jobs and Flying Cars
Who are some of your favorite current bands, local otherwise?
HL: I’m interested in the Dry Cleaning juggernaut. And I really dig Deep Sea Diver, Cloud Nothings, Courtney Barnett, Big Thief/Lenker. And then, I’m also very ready to embrace a new angry band whose music makes you think your stereo is broken when you play it--I’m taking suggestions.
BN: Alt J, Elbow, Doves, Metric, Foals, Snail Mail
 What’s next for the band?
HL: We are recording this summer and trying to put some sort of live outfit together ASAP. Trying to stay out of the ocean for a while.
Closing comments? Words of wisdom? Final thoughts?
Thank you so much for having us!

QAnon-friendly candidate Lauren Boebert won in Colorado, which really sucks, but other than that Democrats had a really good night. I think it’s safe to say that Colorado is now a blue state -- a pretty significant change from just a few election cycles ago. Here are some of the wins:
-John Hickenlooper beat Republican Cory Gardner in the race for U.S. Senate, meaning Colorado now has two Democratic senators.
-Democrat Gordon McLaughlin won his race for District Attorney in Larimer and Jackson county, which has been Republican controlled for over 50 years. Among other policies, McLaughlin is an advocate for eliminating cash bail and reducing penalties for people with drug charges and low-level criminal offenses.
-The Larimer County board of commissioners will be entirely Democratic for the first time ever.
-The University of Colorado Board of Regents flipped its partisan split last night and now has a Democratic majority for the first time in 40 years.
-After an extremely contentious race in 2018, Representative Jason Crow was easily reelected in Colorado’s sixth congressional district. He is the first-ever Democrat to represent the district.
-Colorado elected its first Muslim lawmaker, Democrat Iman Jodeh.
-Colorado voters rejected a proposition to ban abortion after 22 weeks, and voted in a paid family and medical leave bill. They also voted to repeal the Gallagher Amendment, and outdated tax code that hindered the state’s ability to fund schools.
Democrats didn’t do as well statewide as some of us had been hoping, but there is still a lot to celebrate.
