New Birthday Tradition
A little drabble that wanted to be written since Scott and I happened to share a birthday.
(In my stories, Scott and Rebecca, Virgil's future wife, also share a birthday.)
Enjoy!

“Psst.”
Scott stirred at the unexpected noise.
“Pssst, Scott!”
His bedside light was turned on. Scott cracked an eye and saw Rebecca, Virgil’s new girlfriend, huddled by the side of his bed. He rose to rest on his elbow, instantly awake.
“Is everything okay? What time is it?”
“Yeah, everything’s fine. It’s six o’clock Tracy time.”
Scott stared at Rebecca. “Why are you in my room?”
Rebecca grinned in response and held up a small plate. “It’s our birthday! I brought apple pie.”
“You did what?” Scott sat up and quickly pulled the covers up to his chest. He’d forgotten he slept in just his underwear.
“It’s April fourth, Scott. It’s our birthday. I thought we could have a little early morning celebration, just the two of us.”
“And you thought that was a good idea why exactly?”
“Because then we wouldn’t have to fight your family for our cake or pie.” She held up the plate. “As it were.” Scott saw that it contained two small muffin-sized pies.
He stared at them. They were freshly baked and smelled really good. He couldn’t stop himself. “What kind?”
“Apple, of course.”
“Apple? Yeah, I’ll have one.” He reached for a pie.
Rebecca pulled the plate away from him. “Hold on!”
“What?”
“We have to do this properly.”
“Do what properly?” He was becoming frustrated with the pie denial.
“Our new birthday tradition.”
“Rebecca.”
“Please, Scott?” She looked at him with pleading eyes. “I never got to do things like this with my siblings when I was a kid.”
Scott groaned inwardly. She had the same pleading, big blue eyes as Alan. He briefly wondered if that was something the youngest in families automatically knew how to do.
“Ugh, fine. We can have our own birthday tradition, whatever that is.” He leaned back against the headboard and peered at her. “What is it, exactly?”
She grinned. “You’ll like this. Mini apple pies”
He was dubious, but what harm was there in humouring her? She had brought apple pie - his favourite.
Scott watched as she produced a second plate, moved one of the pies onto it, and from somewhere on the floor - a glance showed him there was a tray - produced a scoop of ice cream, which she placed on his pie. Rebecca then topped it with a candle and handed him his plate and a fork before adding ice cream and a candle to her own pie.
“A candle?”
“To make a birthday wish. I have a lighter; hold on.” She produced a lighter and lit both candles. “Make a wish.”
Together they closed their eyes for a moment, opened them and blew out their respective candles. Scott wasted no time diving into his pie.
“Mmmph!”
“Good, is it?”
“This is amazing! When did you do this?”
“I prepped it last night and set a timer on the over so it would preheat before I got up. The pies are small, so they didn’t take long to bake…Oh, and there’s more of them hiding in the freezer.”
Scott laughed. “There was more. My brothers can sus out dessert like no one’s business.”
It was Rebecca’s turn to laugh. “Yeah, Virgil’d warned me. So I labelled the bag ‘Grandma’s Cauliflower Surprise’.”
Surprised, Scott laughed again. “You didn’t!”
She grinned at him. “Did.”
“Very clever.”
Rebecca nodded at the compliment. They finished their pies in companionable silence.
Glancing at the clock on Scott’s bedside table, Rebecca gathered and placed the dishes on the tray. She stood, tray in hand.
“I should be going…hide the evidence before the rest of the house wakes…And Virgil wonders where I’ve disappeared to.” She walked to his door.
“Hey, Becca.” She turned back to look at Scott. “That was really nice. Thanks.”
Rebecca fidgeted with the tray and shrugged a shoulder. “Yeah…well…I should go.” She began to open the door.
“Becca?”
“Scott?”
“This...this is a nice new birthday tradition… Same time next year?”
Rebecca’s smile lit up her face, and she nodded. “Same time next year.”
“Happy Birthday, Rebecca.”
“Happy Birthday, Scott.”

BIRTHDAYS and AGES: THE BEAR SEASON 3
Natalie's birthday is November 10, 1988
Mikey's birthday is NOVEMBER 15, 1979
So Natalie is 35 (as of 2023)
Mikey would have been 44
Richie is 47
CARMY 32
Just getting these numbers straight in my head.
These age gaps are bizarre to me because Mikey is about 10 (9) years older than Natalie. So he would be 20 when she was 10 so all these stories that he and Richie tell, kinda happen when they are grown men.
At the same time Natalie and Carmy are very young kids. They make it sound like they were all knowing Mikey and Richie shenanigans.
If I'm 23, my 13 year old sister is not gonna know anything about me.
It just seems strange to me
