welcome to the 2023 tumblr poetry smackdown
tumblr has developed something of a canon of poetry over the past couple years, and i figured others might enjoy getting a chance to voice their opinions on a few of those poems! poems i chose for the poetry smackdown had to be more or less widely read on tumblr (generally 10k+ notes, most with more or spread across compilations), and relatively short so as to make voting easier. they also had to be complete—there are a lot of popular lines floating around on tumblr that are excerpted from very long poems and/or poems that are inaccessible via internet, and those aren't included here. a handful of poets are represented here twice reflecting my sense of their popularity, but i arranged the bracket in such a way that it won't be able to stay that way past round 2 at the latest. if i missed a poem that is super popular i'm sorry, that said the bracket is staying as is because this was a shit ton of work to put together and i don't want to. ty.
you can get to the polls by following the links below or going to the #round1 tag on my blog. you can also send me propaganda if you want via ask and i'll post it/add it to the next round's post if the poem wins.
happy voting!
sincerely amelia @poetriarchy :)

"Having a Coke with You" by Frank O'Hara vs. "Having 'Having a Coke with You' with You" by Mark Leidner
ADDENDUM: at 6pm on July 17th (or possibly a day earlier if there's already a clear sweep), I will be releasing a one-day poll that will give voters the option to sub in "Wild Geese" by Mary Oliver for the winner of matchup #8: "Swan" vs. "How I Go to the Woods". this is to help correct my significant oversight when I was remembering which two Oliver poems I've seen most on tumblr, and it's the only time I'm doing this kind of thing, so don't suggest it for any other poems after this please. that said, a sincere ty to @darkcomedies for first bringing its absence to my attention! and keep an eye out for this extra poll which i am calling ROUND 1.5: A HAIL MARY (OLIVER)

More Twisters HCs (pt. 3)
Tyler x Kate (married couples edition)
Tyler and Kate don't have fights - they have passionate disagreements. Kate usually solves them by getting naked, and suddenly Tyler loses all semblance of thought; they both forget what it was they were even arguing about
Even though they're almost always on the move, Tyler buys a plot of land somewhere in Sapulpa with plans to build a house. He wants a chicken coop for fresh eggs and enough room for some horses
Every night is dance night in their kitchen; it's either Luke Bryan's Play it Again, Thompson Square's Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not?, Jon Langston's All Eyes on Us, or Luke Comb's The Kind of Love We Make
Whoever wins two out of three in Rock, Paper, Scissors gets to choose the movie on movie nights/dates
They split the chores, though Tyler is banned from doing laundry--EVER; which is fine, because Kate is banned from cooking
They have a dog named Biscuit, two horses (Spinner and Whiplash), and a barn cat named Lucifer
Tyler had to go out of town once, and he left her one of those Relief Koalas that mimic breathing patterns and heartbeat sounds (I forgot to add that to one of the other ones), though it's never as good as the real thing

— Bradley Spencer
Standard Facts:
Bradley (Stanley) Spencers are trans men with brown skin, an overload of freckles, dark hair and eyes. They stand at 5'5 feet and usually prefer to wear jeans and sweaters, although they love to cross-dress.
They are mischievous, at times immature, loud and hyperactive. Some of them may be violent, psychopathic and desperate, others may seem well adjusted and only show their chaotic side during certain moments. They are not known for their self control and are too flippant with their own safety.
A lot of Bradleys can shapeshift with their Narrator powers and they use this power for evil (turning into adorable calico cats)
Bradleys get their Narrator powers when they overpowered their Narrators and made themselves admin of the Offices. Their former Narrators are John Katzenbach
Bradley Meier
The first developed Bradley on this blog. Met his future husband Franky after getting murdered by him several times and fell hopelessly in love.  He left the Office with Franky eventually and they made a nice life for themselves. They don’t visit but Bradley keeps in touch with Stel de Grammont.  Married to: Franky Meier (@dorkydaddyclub) Children: Cocoa and Marshmallow Meier Uncle in law: Ludolf Meier His former Narrator: John Katzenbach His former Mariella: Alice Nero (@thegrimdarkoffice) His former Curator: Frances Langston His former Adventure Line: Arvan Murphey Lives in: the Outside with Franky
Bradley Spencer
The new 'standard' Bradley who is slowly becoming the relevant version on this blog. He made friends with Maso and Cas, and managed to escape back to the Outside for a few months. When he came back, he had taken Ezra Jaxden and Mallory Scott with him. Dating: Ezra Jaxden, Mallory Scott Interested in: Cas (@networksupported) His former Narrator: John Katzenbach Lives in: His own Office
Crowley Spencer
The prototype Bradley Spencer, the guy who existed before Bradley. Came back to the blog because he really wanted attention. His Narrator: John (Employee 112) Lives in: His own Office
Curley Spencer
A Bradley who is deaf. Wears big glasses and has a head full of stubborn curls, hence the name. Unlike other Bradleys who can only shapeshift due to their Narrator powers, Curley is a werecat. Interested in: Dmitri Von Diamongal (@anetherealtale) Lives in: Dad!Jon's Office
Cryley Spencer
A formerly doomed Bradley who sought solace in Dad!Jon's Office after escaping from an abusive Narrator. He is one of the only Bradleys who didn't manage to overpower his Narrator. He has recovered and now lives happily with his boyfriend, Marcel. Dating: Marcel Sommers Lives in: Dad!Jon's Office

3, 4 and 16!
3. What were your top five books of the year?
In no particular order, my top 5 romances were:
The Duke Gets Even by Joanna Shupe
Convergence of Desire by Felicity Niven
The Duchess by Sophie Jordan
The Notorious Lord Knightly by Lorraine Heath
The Duke Starts a Scandal by Sophie Jordan
In no particular order, my top 5 nonfiction books were:
And There Was Light by Jon Meacham
Romney: A Reckoning by McKay Coppins
Giving Up The Ghost by Hilary Mantel
Women of Will: Following the Feminine in Shakespeare's Plays by Tina Packer
How Beautiful It Is and How Easily It Can Be Broken by Daniel Mendelsohn
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
Erin Langston, Felicity Niven
16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?
I hate to say this but The Woman In Me by Britney Spears like the reality is that I think Britney did and possibly still does need a conservatorship, even though her father's was clearly abusive. I think she comes across as much less healthy than she probably intended to and maybe I'm projecting, but as someone with not dissimilar health issues, I can tell.

Hi Tumblr, I love children's books and I'm looking forward to seeing the Caldecott Award winners announced in January. Until then though, I wanna try doing a mock Caldecott tournament here. IF you are unfamiliar with the Caldecott Award, it is a children's book award awarded to children's picture books that display an excellence in illustration. It is only for books published in America however, and only for books published in the same year. More info can be found here: https://www.ala.org/ala/alsc/awardsscholarships/literaryawds/caldecottmedal/caldecottterms/caldecottterms.htm
I am incredibly lazy and have no experience in making a bracket and so this will be a very laid back thing. To put together a list, I am referring to school library journal's lists, because again, I'm lazy. This includes:
An American Story by Kwame Alexander and Dare Coulter (disclaimer, I am biased, this is the one I want to win)
Evergreen by Matthew Cordell
The Fire of Stars: The Life and Brilliance of the Woman Who Discovered What Stars Are Made Of by Kirsten W Larsen and Katherine Roy
Nell Plants a Tree by Ann Wynters and Daniel Miyares
The Tree and the River by Aaron Becker
The Skull by Jon Klassen
Jumper: A day in the Life of a Backyard Jumping Spider by Jessica Lanan
There was a Party for Langston by Jason Reynolds and Jerome and Jarrett Pumphrey
Tomfoolery: Randolph Caldecott and the Rambunctious Coming-of-Age of Children’s Books by Michelle Markel and Barbara McClintock
Big by Vashti Harrison
I intend to start things on Monday. Also, I said I am referring to the attached lists for this, but if there's a book someone else really thinks should be included, let me know!
