Top 5 historical places to visit in Jordan in 2023
Tumblr media
Jordan is a country rich in history and culture, with ancient sites that date back thousands of years. It's no wonder that it is a popular tourist attraction among tourists looking to explore the wonders of the Middle East. If you're planning a trip to Jordan in 2023, you won't want to miss out on these top 5 historical places to visit.
First up is Petra, also known as the Rose City. This ancient city is one of the most famous historical sites in Jordan, and for good reason. It boasts impressive architecture dating back to the 4th century BC, and its iconic Treasury building is instantly recognizable. Visitors can explore the city's remarkable buildings, including the Monastery and the Royal Tombs, as well as take in the stunning natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.
To get to Petra, you'll need to make your way to the town of Wadi Musa, which serves as the gateway to the city. Once you arrive, you'll need to purchase a ticket to enter the site. The ticket includes access to all of the main attractions in Petra, including the Treasury, the Monastery, and the Royal Tombs.
If you're looking to learn more about the history of Petra, you can hire a local guide to take you on a tour of the site. Guides are available for hire at the entrance to Petra, and they can provide you with fascinating insights into the city's history and architecture.
Another tourist destination in Jordan is Jerash, located just 50 km north of Amman. This ancient Roman city is one of the best-preserved in the world, and it offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into life in the Roman Empire. The city was founded in the 4th century BC, but it reached its peak during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, when it boasted a population of over 20,000 people.
Visitors to Jerash can explore the ancient streets, temples, and amphitheaters of the city, which have been remarkably well-preserved over the centuries. Some of the highlights of the site include the Temple of Artemis, the South Theater, and the Nymphaeum.
Like Petra, Jerash offers visitors the opportunity to hire a local guide to take them on a tour of their respective tourist destinations. Guides can provide you with in-depth information about the history and culture of the city, as well as answer any questions you may have.
Moving on, we come to Madaba, a small city located just 30 km south of Amman. Madaba is known for its impressive collection of Byzantine mosaics, which are among the finest in the world. The most famous of these mosaics is the Madaba Map, which is the oldest surviving map of the Holy Land and depicts Jerusalem and other biblical sites in great detail.
Visitors to Madaba can explore the city's many churches and museums, which are home to some of the most impressive mosaics in the country. One of the highlights of the city is the Church of St. George, which is home to the Madaba Map.
In addition to its rich history, Madaba is also known for its lively markets and delicious cuisine. Be sure to sample some of the local dishes, such as mansaf, a traditional Jordanian dish made with lamb and yogurt sauce.
Last but not the least, we come to Wadi Rum, a vast desert valley located in southern Jordan. This natural wonder offers visitors the opportunity to explore stunning landscapes and historical sites, and it's a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the great outdoors.
In conclusion, Jordan is a country steeped in history and culture, with an abundance of ancient sites that offer a fascinating glimpse into the past. Whether you're interested in exploring the remarkable architecture of Petra, the well-preserved ruins of Jerash, the stunning Byzantine mosaics of Madaba, or the natural beauty of Wadi Rum, Jordan has something to offer everyone. A trip to Jordan in 2023 is sure to be an unforgettable experience, full of adventure, history, and culture. So pack your bags and get ready to explore this amazing country!

Inspired by this post where Hal Jordan (who is canonically Jewish) can't help but notice Batman declining a donut on Yom Kippur...
I think it would be hilarious if Hal went into detective mode and it became A Thing.
Batman does frequently refuse pastries, so it takes a while, but eventually the evidence adds up to create A Theory. The Yiddish words Batman occasionally drops in his rants could just be a product of living in Gotham. Maybe he simply isn’t hungry on Yom Kippur. Perhaps he brings his own food during Passover in a spur of paranoia. But all of it, together?
Hal feels like a conspiracy theorist with a string board, because yeah, he feels like a jerk trying to figure out if someone is Jewish, but…he has to know. For the sake of just knowing. And also so he knows whether he should avoid scheduling monitor duty on Friday nights. (Batman’s never complained, but Batman doesn’t really seem the type to kvetch—that goes in the “not Jewish” evidence column).
Batman vetoes a proposal that they meet on the first night of Passover, citing “family matters.” When Diana proposes moving it to the second night, he cites “family matters” as well.
Hal sees Batman eating a cheeseburger. But everyone has different levels of observance, and fasting for Yom Kippur and eating kosher for Passover doesn't mean Batman always eats kosher...
Perhaps he's getting too attached to his idea. Hal theorizes that Batman is wearing a kippah under his cowl, and that’s why he uses a cowl instead of a mask. (Batman is not, in fact, wearing a kippah under his cowl. Hair clips could injure him if he’s hit in the head, and he was never raised to wear one as a kid.)
Eventually, after years of this, Batman brings latkes to the Justice League’s winter holiday party. He looks across the room, stares Hal right in the eyes, holds up a package of vegan cheese, and slowly places a slice on his burger. A chill travels down his spine.
Batman’s definitely seen his “evidence” list, hasn’t he?

hendolish Xmas plans? angst or fluff (it’s probably both with them). have they been texting on an Xmas theme? (feels like Jack would just to be annoying) are they doing presents? getting together for a night or a stolen weekend before the day? is Hendo rn missing snow and frost and Xmas lights as much as he’s missing Jack? or is one/both of them not really into the whole thing at all, thinking it’s overhyped?
jack grealish/jordan henderson | christmas ♡
As Christmas approaches, a bittersweet undercurrent flows through the exchanged texts between Jack and Jordan. The festive spirit that once enveloped them together is now a distant memory, replaced by the physical distance that separates them.
Jack, ever endearingly annoying, bombards Jordan with Christmas-themed messages. GIFs of dancing elves, Santa emojis, and constant reminders of the impending holiday fill Jordan's phone. It makes Jordan somehow fond and exasperated all at the same time, a playful attempt to bridge the miles between them.
"Missing my favourite elf this Christmas," one of Jack's messages reads, accompanied by a wink and a large array of festive emojis.
Jordan rolls his eyes when he sees the message flash up on his phone. Jack's teased him about his ears before, it’s nothing new, but he can't help but smile at the antics, replying with a simple, "You're a menace, you know that? No presents for you."
The conversation inevitably turns to Christmas plans. The realisation that they won't be waking up together on Christmas morning settles like a heavy snowfall in both their hearts, each message carrying the weight of longing
"I wish I could be there," Jordan types, his thumbs hovering over the screen as he contemplates the distance.
Jack's reply is swift, a mix of understanding and melancholy. "Me too, Hendo. It's not the same without you. Fuck boxing day matches."
Despite talking whenever and wherever they can, there's a palpable ache in their hearts, a yearning for the shared warmth of past holidays. Jordan finds himself missing more than just Jack; he longs for the frosty air, the twinkling Christmas lights, the familiar sights and sounds of Liverpool during the holiday season.
Jack, perhaps sensing the sombre mood, suggests, "Let's do presents. Ship something to each other. A piece of us for Christmas."
It's a small but meaningful gesture, a way to bridge the physical gap with tangible tokens of affection. The idea brings a spark of excitement, a reminder that, even in separation, they can be together.
As the packages make their way across continents, the anticipation builds. Gifts exchanged between two hearts a testament to a love that refuses to be diminished by distance.
Later on, in the midst of the Christmas chaos, Hendo takes a moment to video call Jack. The screen lights up with the familiar sight of Jack's grinning face, and for a moment, the distance evaporates. They share laughs, exchange updates, and revel in their closeness.
As they discuss their plans for the holiday, the conversation shifts to the prospect of reuniting—a stolen weekend, a brief escape from the obligations of work and life if they can somehow find the time.
"I can't wait to have you here," Jack admits, his eyes reflecting the depth of his emotions.
Jordan echoes the sentiment, and then grins widely because he can't pass up the opportunity to be ridiculously cheesy and watch Jack laugh as he tells him to fuck off, "You'll be my best Christmas gift."
The video call ends with a promise to make the most of the time they'll have together. As Jordan hangs up, a sense of warmth fills his chest. Christmas, with all its complexities, becomes a celebration of love, connection, and the unwavering bond between him and Jack.

what are you looking forward to?
hmm...i've been sitting on this question for ~3 days now (🙈) and right now my future just seems like a big unknown—all i see is a big '?'. i'm not dreading the unknown, but i'm not looking forward to it either, so for lack of a better answer, i'm just going to say my yet-to-be-scheduled jeremyathon (which i'm looking forward to even though i don't know when it's happening XD).
oh i also have a family trip coming up in a couple weeks wow i spent 3 days thinking about this answer and all it took was for me to actually sit down and start answering to think of something, but lately family dynamics haven't been the greatest so we shall see how this goes.
something you want to learn
realistically: how to bake actually good yeast bread. how to not kill my plants (maybe i shouldn't forget about them 🙈). how to think (more) critically. how to crochet something useful.
not-so-realistically: i've always just really wanted to be able to do a front flip (olympic season is probably not helping with this). how to fly a plane (i mean...if i really, truly wanted to, i think that one's not too hard to achieve). quantum science. just...everything about space XD.
i've realized that this is more one thing whoops.
something i’m talented at
i'm wicked with photoshop. okay no, that's a lie, and we're not going there today
i think i'm a relatively fast learner and am able to retain information really well. now if only i could choose where to apply these skills that would be great XD.
5 things that make me happy
would you believe me if i didn't say jeremy jordan
spending quality time with my sister (and forcing her to watch jeremy. that's a new addition to our relationship though, which i'm sure she *greatly* appreciates)
well-designed packaging/products, clever graphic design, cool fonts, aesthetically pleasing color palettes, websites where i notice the ui/ux for good reasons
christmas, the whole holiday season and its festivities (maybe it's a little early for this XD)
being productive (okay clearly i'm struggling with this one right now XD, but i like the feeling of accomplishment)

Egypt Approves 50 Billion Pound Investment to Boost Tourism
Egypt has recently authorized a substantial financial package worth 50 billion Egyptian pounds to bolster its tourism sector by expanding hotel capacities. This strategic initiative is projected to create around 45,000 new job opportunities, directly and indirectly, thereby supporting the government's efforts to combat unemployment through increased private-sector investment.
The allocated funds are specifically intended to enhance Egypt's tourism infrastructure and are prohibited from being used to settle existing banking sector debts. This condition underscores the government's commitment to the growth and revitalization of Egypt's tourism industry.
Moreover, this initiative aims to foster the development of new tourism offerings that capitalize on Egypt's rich cultural heritage and historic sites. By leveraging these assets, Egypt seeks to attract more tourists and enhance visitor experiences, thereby solidifying its position as a premier global tourism destination.
In conclusion, Egypt's decision to invest 50 billion pounds into its tourism sector represents a crucial step towards economic revitalization, job creation, and enhancing Egypt's international appeal as a tourism hub through focused infrastructure improvements and innovative tourism initiatives.
Reservations for Egypt Easter tours following the holiday week further indicate the revival of activities in Siwa Oasis during this period. The recovery of Egypt classic tours can also be attributed to increased local tourism promotion for Siwa Oasis and growing awareness of its distinctive and unique tourism offerings. The oasis provides a wide range of accommodations to suit all economic groups, with reasonable subsistence costs and no cases of exploitation or price violations, thanks to the hospitable nature of the local people.
During the winter tourist season, Siwa Oasis has witnessed a surge in popularity, driven by the active promotion of Egypt day tours by domestic tourism companies. Domestic tourism has played a significant role in reviving the winter tourism movement over the past years, as more people discover the oasis's tourism, cultural, and environmental components, as well as its serene natural beauty. Siwa Oasis has become a sought-after destination for recreation and the enjoyment of tranquility during the winter season, while also gaining recognition as a medical tourism destination during the summer.
Siwa Oasis stands out as one of the most important parks in Egypt and internationally, boasting a continental climate, warm weather, and diverse destinations and activities. It offers adventure tourism, safari tours, camping experiences, unique cultural and natural attractions, and recreational activities. International tourism companies include Siwa Oasis on their list of recommendations for tourists, adventure enthusiasts, and those seeking comfort, tranquility, and a primitive way of life. Popular tour packages like the Siwa Oasis, Bahariya, and White Desert Tour Package and the unique Private Tour to Siwa Oasis allow visitors to explore the fascinating oasis and immerse themselves in its charming atmosphere, hot springs, and salt lakes. Siwa Oasis is also home to various Islamic, Roman, and Pharaonic monuments, such as the Temple of Revelation, the Tomb of Alexander the Great, the Mountain of the Dead, and the Temple of Amun and the Shali Castle.
Siwa Oasis is renowned for its medical tourism offerings during the summer months, attracting patients seeking treatments like hot sand baths for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and various skin diseases. Patients and visitors come from different regions of Egypt, as well as Arab and foreign countries, often combining their visits with other tourist destinations like Egypt and Jordan tours.
Siwa Oasis, being a natural reserve, takes pride in preserving its unique heritage architectural style, characterized by buildings of one or two floors. Hotels and tourist resorts adhere to the ancient Siwi architectural style, maintaining a unified appearance, colors, and facades. Accommodation prices cater to various budgets, ensuring a memorable and inclusive experience for all visitors.
When exploring Egypt, travelers can combine their adventures with visits to Siwa Oasis. From the bustling city of Cairo, visitors can embark on the Siwa Oasis Tour from Cairo, immersing themselves in the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the oasis. Alternatively, the 7-day tour to Cairo and Siwa Oasis provides a comprehensive experience that combines the highlights of Cairo with the serenity of Siwa Oasis. For a shorter excursion, the 3 Days 2 Nights Siwa Oasis Desert tours from Cairo offer a taste of the oasis's unique charm. Other popular options include Egypt Nile Cruise tours, which allow travelers to sail along the iconic Nile River, and Egypt shore excursions, which provide opportunities to explore the country's remarkable coastal destinations.

Can you write fic about the band appreciating Nace? Can be poly slash or gen, I am fine with both, but I'd love to read about the guys realizing how much Nace means to them, how much he contributes to them etc. Also maybe them simping a little for him? Because damn those tats, that gorg face and the hair?? That man is a dream, paired with his amazing personality??? Give my man some attention guys! Also thank you in advance, I am sure you'll do great, I love reading your writings <33
Sorry anon that this took so long, I've been suffering from vertigo and quite bad asthma for a few days and so had not very much motivation to write:(
I have finished it now though and I loved the prompt, thank you so much! I haven't yet written a Nace centred fic so this was an interesting challenge. I hope you like it:)
--------------
Nace Jordan had joined Joker Out almost a year ago. And that almost a year had probably been one of the best almost years he had ever had.
At first when he joined the band there was some hesitancy from the other guys, they were still sore over the fact that Martin had left and were wary of the new member of the band.
But as time went on they soon warmed up to the new bassist and came to appreciate and love him as the sixth member of the band.
You would think that because he was the newest member of the band that there would be some friction and hostility but he was genuinely loved and cherished by all the other members.
--------------
If you asked Bojan what he first thought of Nace he would have answered “not much” as he was mostly intensely mourning Martin leaving the band.
He would then clarify that his first impression didn’t mean shit, that what followed was what really mattered.
Throughout the months since Nace had joined the band Bojan had grown to love the other man dearly, as much as he loved all the other members of the band.
The man fit right in with the group, when he joined it was like a puzzle piece falling into place. Bojan couldn’t have wished for a better bass player or a better friend.
After a time though, those feelings of friendship grew into something more.
Bojan started noticing more things about the other man, things like his tattoos, and his earrings, and his smile. Oh how Bojan loved that smile.
He loved the way that Nace smiled; with the gap between his teeth showing, and the fact that when he laughed, it was the most joyful noise he had ever heard.
He loved that although the other man was responsible a lot of the time, mostly because of being the oldest member of the group, he still let loose and had so much happiness and love in his heart for his friends.
It had gotten to a point where whenever Bojan found himself on the receiving end of that smile he found himself blushing uncontrollably, having to look away or play it off as the heaters being on too high.
Bojan was not the only member of the group who got flustered when around the bassist though.
He started to notice the mesmerised looks Jan would always send Nace’s way whenever they were in the same room, or the way that Jure took special time to make Nace gluten free meals when they went on holiday together, or how Kris would shamelessly flirt with the other man on stage.
There had always been looks and touches between the members of the band, dating back to it’s formation when they were all teenagers, messing around with each other and exploring their sexualities, and all the members loved each other dearly; but no one had taken the first step yet.
Things changed when Nace joined the group though. It’s like his presence made them all feel like they could finally be free together, like they could finally let their feelings be known and love each other more than ever before.
--------------
The first person to confess their feelings was Jure, finding the bassist alone in the studio one night.
The drummer had been there to see if a package had been dropped off and Nace had just been finishing off practising a possible new bassline for a new song; seeing the chance to talk to the taller man alone, Jure decided to take it.
Jure confessed all of his feelings, how he loved the bass player, yes for his personality, his looks, but also for the feeling of love which surrounded the other man at all times.
This of course made the older man cry tears of joy and when the other members of the band came in the next morning, they found the drummer and bass player curled up together on the couch, looking the very picture of a storybook couple.
And they were, for the next week at least, until Jan caved and confessed that he too had been in love with Nace since he had first laid eyes on the other man.
What followed was about three days of Jan, Jure and Nace being together and trying to work out their relationship before Bojan and Kris decided together that they should stop putting off the inevitable, and before too long the members of Joker Out were a fully fledged quintuple.
It turned out that all it took was Nace joining the band to bring everyone together and make the other four men confess the feelings which they had obviously been harbouring for each other for years.
The sheer love felt for that man had united a whole band, or at least that’s what the other members loved to tell him on every anniversary, birthday, holiday, or just any time that they were able to.
And it was true, Bojan, Kris, Jan and Jure probably wouldn’t have acknowledged their feeling for another few years, if Nace hadn’t have come along and united the band over the fact that they were all weak for tall bass players with tattoo sleeves, cute gaps in their front teeth, hair that used to fall lazily over their forehead but now looks sexy pushed back, and gluten intolerances.

I snored myself awake when I could have used another hour or two of sleep and finally I said, I gotta do something about this shit. Sleep cursed or not, no getting around it or not, I've got to at least try something. So, since it will be a while before I see the next pulmonologist and even longer before and if I can get a mouthguard, I really do have to try to lose a little weight. I didn't have this problem 10 lb ago, although it still seems a hell of a coincidence that as soon as I move to a quieter place where traffic isn't waking me up, I start snoring myself awake. Again, it's like something always wants to fuck with my sleep. At least I wasn't as tired as I normally would be after being shorted on sleep. I really do think the waterbed is helping. It's so much more comfortable. The vitamins help too but I don't want to overdo it so I'm taking them every other day and will see how I feel.
Anyway, Atkins is a bit extreme and not good for people like me, so I'm thinking of going Keto. They recommend 20 to 50 carbs a day instead of just 20 like Atkins. Thanks to AI, I could really get some helpful info on it. Most of it is common sense but it's still nice that I can ask it for a menu plan if I want or if a specific food or drink is acceptable on that diet, what the carbs are, etc. I still don't want to drive myself too crazy with all kinds of restrictions. I also still don't think my body will give up its weight due to a combination of my thyroid, being older, and my body being used to being where it's at but I'm going to make one last-ditch effort along with trying to get help with the two sleep disorders. No matter what the doctor says, everything is up to the insurance company in the end. Never the patient and the doctor which is all wrong but just the way it is. They get the final say whether I like it or not, so if there's anything that can help me that I can't afford that they won't cover, I'm shit outa luck.
Thanks for all the story ideas some of you offered on different sites but I think I'm going to take a break for my story and come back to it later with a fresh mind and see what I want to do with it then. I might work on something a little simpler with a less intricate plot instead.
I was frustrated today because my Temu package arrived in Florida last night but it wasn't transferred to the post office in time to get to me today. Because tomorrow is a holiday, I'll have to wait till Friday.
Here we go with the fireworks again although it hasn't been nearly as bad as I thought it would be… yet. Tomorrow night I expect some chaos, understandably, because it will be the fourth but hopefully, it won't go on and on and on for so many hours. Like anyone really gives a shit about the country's birthday anyway as opposed to making noise to get attention?
I'm finishing up the first of five rides of VZ’s latest challenge which are in France in honor of the upcoming Olympics.
I read that Jordan Chiles almost quit gymnastics because she “didn't think the sport wanted her” because of her race and I’m like, she's kidding, right? After Gabby Douglas, Simone, and other black gymnasts, she really thought that? Some people really see racism in everything and I mean everything, even when it's not really there. It's attitudes like hers that make whites look bad.
Grow up, Jordan, and stop making excuses! If you want to throw your talent away and quit for other reasons, do it. But don't blame whites for why you really want to throw in the towel.
Since I bitched about the famous, how about the infamous? When I read that Susan Smith was up for parole, I couldn't help but ask how the hell someone can drown their two kids and have it shot at parole, even if they're unlikely to get it at first, while Jodi Arias can kill her gaslighting, mindfucking boyfriend (not that he deserved it), and get life with no chance of parole. WTF???

For several years, Giannis Antetokounmpo was unassailable in the public realm. Still, he mostly is. How can you not love him? That’s a question easily asked about the Greek-Nigerian star for the Milwaukee Bucks; two-time MVP, one-time NBA champion, small-market hero, consummate sunshine smiler, and small-pleasure goofball. Just the other day, he went viral for participating in a home game stadium tradition, snapping a picture of a jumbotron QR code to get a free fast food giveaway along with the fans. Hilarious!
In recent days, though, more skeptical remarks about Giannis have grown in volume. Newly 29 years old and into his 11th season, Antetokounmpo is entering the winter of his career. Few stars, even if they are committed midwestern idols with a demonstrated delight for the milquetoast, make it this far without various doubts proliferating about them. In his case, the previous summer’s makeover of his beleaguered squad has prompted cause for revisionism.
The Bucks’ earth-shaking trade for Damian Lillard came after they excused long-time leader Mike Budenholzer from their head coaching job, replacing him with first-timer Adrian Griffin. The Griffin/Lillard Bucks had a new characteristic: they’re bad at defense. Very, very bad, and in a way that Budenholzer, and his defense with the now-Celtic Jrue Holiday at its head, would simply never accept. The Bucks win anyway — they’re currently 32-15, good for the third-best record in the league — but it looks sloppy enough that Griffin is already gone, now replaced by Doc Rivers.
Looming over all of this, in the fan’s imagination, is Giannis. While he isn’t the team’s general manager and his defensive performance remains stalwart, the truism about the modern NBA persists: superstars at his level are culture-makers, whether they like it or not, and the Bucks’ change in character is necessarily a reflection of his own. You don’t, they say, trade a touchstone player like Holiday without Giannis’ go-ahead, or replace a widely celebrated head coach unless he wants you to. And the Bucks have done both.
World-class competitors are, of course, never just the good-times guys they usually present themselves as. In 2024 we know that Michael Jordan was a vengeance-fueled dino-shark, but when he was ascendant in the 1980’s, all he was to anyone was a chipper corporate mascot with the best highlight package you’d ever seen. There’s no "Last Dance" for Giannis, but surely one would show him to us in many unflattering ways, whether he gambles desperately in back rooms with stadium employees or not.
One absurd preview of a less cheery version of Giannis is already behind us but is worth recontextualizing in light of the Neo-Bucks’ dark night of the soul. In November 2022, he sparked a discursive frenzy when, following a road loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, Antetokounmpo went back out onto the floor for extra free throw practice. It didn’t go well. A team worker needed to do routine maintenance on the rim Giannis was shooting into, and he aggressively shoved the employee’s ladder away from him.
A full-on hater might say that this episode revealed his true nature. This isn’t true, or a claim made by this column, because everyone’s nature is too complex to summarize in one scene. But certainly, Antetokounmpo’s spiritual makeup is more unnervingly driven and dangerously prickly than conventional knowledge has heretofore suggested. One part of more people realizing this has been increased mentions of his organization holding a roster spot for his athletically incompetent crony brother Thanasis—a sign of privilege overindulged, surely—and more and more noticing, as well, his frequently unstrategic preference for aesthetically ambitious three-pointers that pretty much always hurt the team. And like every other big man star this side of Dwight Howard, he’s been selfishly reluctant to play off the ball as a pick-and-roll play finisher, and into the strengths of Lillard and other ball-handlers. It might be the best thing for the team, but it wouldn't look very cool for him, and he's had enough success to dictate X's O's (or the lack of them) according to what he wants his highlights to look like.
All of this is to say that Giannis is, ultimately, more like other stars than previously imagined, and less the exception to their characteristic profile than assumed. Naturally motivated to dominate, he is even more so under the influence of tier-one wealth and fame. Fans will continue to project moral qualities onto him that he maybe only sort of has—like most people—but is easier to associate with, because of the geocultural nature of the city of the team that drafted him, and because of how convincingly he smirks when he talks about Chick-fil-A. Love him all you want. I certainly do. But we’re too deep into his saga to ignore the other things, and to leave them out of our love.
Houston’s 135-119 victory over the Lakers on Monday marked another act in the ongoing drama of Dillon Brooks’ villain arc. Embracing his antagonist persona, Brooks, one of the league’s elite perimeter defenders, expertly needled under Jarred Vanderbilt’s skin until the young forward earned himself an ejection. He also continued his well-checkered history with LeBron James by smacking the 39-year-old star in the face.
The simmering tension between Brooks and Vanderbilt boiled over in the second quarter, with Vanderbilt’s frustration reaching a boiling point. Brooks, never one to shy away from a little extra jostling, met Vanderbilt with a playful nudge. Vanderbilt responded with a shove that resulted in a quick technical. However, the tension continued as Vanderbilt followed Brooks down the court. This culminated in a perplexing poke to the back of Brooks’ head. It was the final straw, another technical sending Vanderbilt packing early.
But that wasn’t the most egregious part of Monday’s game. In the fourth quarter of Monday’s game — with Los Angeles down by 16 — Brooks crashed into James on a rebound, his arm inadvertently swinging across the Lakers star’s face. The impact sent James to the floor, clutching his face in pain. The referees immediately huddled, reviewing the play before ultimately calling a Flagrant 1 foul on Brooks. And, of course, Brooks was allowed to remain in the game.
James, who has previously credited Brooks’ competitive spirit, was disinterested in discussing him in a postgame scrum with reporters. The usually candid James didn’t even allow the reporter to finish his question about Brooks, “We were here earlier in the year, you said about Brooks, and you said,” before he was abruptly cut off by the Lakers star.
Regardless of how you interpret it, LeBron’s silence served a clear purpose. It denied Brooks the oxygen of attention his antics craved, refusing to validate his ability to disrupt the team’s focus. Even if both the Vanderbilt and James incidents warranted ejections, LeBron wouldn’t give them the power to hijack the narrative.
It also likely serves as a message to other reporters that no matter the context, this isn’t a guy that James wants to speak on, even if he’s previously credited Brooks’ competitive nature.
