I love how you really put a lot of thought into how you regard and read fanfic as well as how you respond to questions about how you feel aout it. Can I ask what are some parts/ideas in fics that really made you go wow, this is well planned or like I never would have thought about this or I forgot that this plot point and device were even a thing! I hope this makes sense

I love the idea of time travel, so when I read this fic’s summary I bookmarked it instantly. At first, I thought it was going to be eight chapters of Laurent waking up the day of the battle of Marlas, but the author really surprised me.

I loved that someone died at the end of each chapter (at first, at least) but what really made me go ‘oh’ is when Lauret realizes the Damen from “this new reality” is, in fact, his Damen!

Damen not being with Jokaste was weird to me, but I shrugged it off as a personal choice the author had made. Then, when Damen was talking about abolishing slavery, I was still in denial. ‘Oh, well, some people don’t like to write Damen as a slave owner, which is cool’. And then, when the big reveal finally came, I was just… amazed. I literally put my phone down and went, ‘okay, this person really knows what they’re doing when it comes to writing’.

I love the little plot twists. In my head, a plot twist most basic example is ‘oh, X is a traitor’ but… this? This is so much better.

Between the Shadow and the Soul by Anonymous

This work was… insanely refreshing, innovative, transgressive, and outrageously good. It does feature a lot of sex scenes, but at the same time, it felt like sex was the least important part of the story. I don’t know how to explain myself when it comes to this fic (and God knows I’ve tried) but… The sex scenes aren’t there just for the smut of it all, if that makes any sense.

Auguste as a narrator is so unusual, and yet it made the fic so painful and enjoyable! I loved the way it left you wondering just how accurate his POV was. I loved the sex scenes with actual characterization. This author never, not even for one second, stopped focusing on the dynamic between Laurent, Auguste, and Damen. It could be argued that the Laurent/Auguste bit weighted more than the overall OT3 bit, but still… I had literally forgotten what sex scenes were for until I read this fic.

Sex scenes, especially in this particular work, are not parentheses in the story. They’re not there for the reader to take a break from the “actual plot” or “narration”. They are what holds the story together, and they’re opportunities for the reader to learn more about the characters

Cherry Wine by SteeleStingray

Yes, I’m back on my bullshit. Yes, I’m talking about CW again. But I’ll make it short because there is no way you don’t know how I feel about this work. If you don’t, check out this comment (which, by the way, is not even a fraction of what I wanted to say to the author when I read the fic).

What I found innovative and made me go “is this allowed?” about CW is not the idea of an OT3, but rather this particular take on a relationship that consists of three people. I’ve read a few published books that feature similar couples (all of them suck, and when I say they suck I mean it) so I was very hesitant to read this because of that reason.

Usually, when people write OT3 they pepper in a lot of stuff I don’t like to read about: extreme jealousy, misunderstandings, cheating, weird dynamics that feel stilted, awkward sex scenes where one of the three just sits in a chair and watches the other two like some voyeur from Juan José Saer’s stories. Guess what doesn’t happen in CW?

Another thing I liked about this work is that it reminded me that themes in fiction aren’t limited to one specific work. This author really likes nicknames. At the time, when I had only read CW, I thought it was just a one-time thing. Turns out, it’s not. An emerald-coloured nightmare also features nicknames. I like this idea that you can tell who wrote something based on little details and narrative choices. It’s like the author is winking at you, going ‘ha, did you get it?’

Ink on Paper by deripmaver

I don’t usually like fics with non-linear narrative because I’m a lazy bitch who can’t keep up. I’d never really seen the point in using flashbacks, scenes from the past, or anything like that because my writing style (oh, fuck off, my writing style, who the fuck do I think I am) is more about references. And then I read this fic. And I was like, ‘okay, I’ve seen the light of not writing everything linearly like an idiot’.

Yes, I realize I’m talking about all my favorite fics. I feel no shame.

This fic is a Modern AU. Everyone who has ever written a Modern AU knows that one of the trickiest parts is finding characters professions that make sense with who they are/what they like/what they’re good at. This story features Damen as an influencer. That’s it, that’s my whole tweet.

It reminded me that even when you’re writing a Modern AU (or any sort of AU, really) it’s important to know what the essence of the characters you’re writing is. The way even Jord’s job makes sense… And how it feels like the author didn’t just steal the characters’ names and use them to create a random story (which is valid, too)... and… Okay, this has nothing to do with a plot twist or a narrative device but have you read this Nicaise? Have you? You haven’t read Nicaise until you’ve read this fic.

This fic is 612 words. It has no plot. One of the tags reads, “listen they're in love and they're cute and that's all i have to say” and I… yes. This fic inspired me to write plot-less stories again. Not only that, it made me enjoy writing them.

Lately, I’ve been talking to a friend of mine about a new pairing we both like a lot. We go back and forth for hours sometimes just talking about what they’d do, details about the worldbuilding, a billion ‘what-ifs’... and I love it. If one of us sat down to write a story based on all our conversations, it would be a character study fic. It would have, maybe, some plot to it, but… Plot would feel like an excuse to talk about their relationship. And I love that. I fucking hate plot, I hate it, and this… Yes. This fic is like a little slice of life. The author has mentioned before that they enjoy writing poetry (more than longer pieces of fiction) and this story reads like a poem. You know when you read a poem and you get this weird tingly feeling? Read this and feel that, you’re welcome.

The Life We Live by homewithyou

I’ve said before that I don’t go looking for mpreg. Sometimes, mpreg has come looking for me, and I’ve closed my door on its face. I read this fic mainly because I never pay attention to the tags on AO3 (healthy, I know) and I was too busy making myself toast to read the summary.

I was five paragraphs in and this bit hit me like a fucking electric hammer to the head: “...which had been going haywire more often than not since the pregnancy began five months ago.” I was like, ‘wait, did I—am I reading—why am I—’ and then I just shut my mouth and continued reading. I’m glad I did. I’m glad I didn’t let my narrowmindedness stop me from giving this fic a try. I’m glad people out there are writing stories that they enjoy, about topics a few others would deem controversial.

This also applies to the Lamen/Auguste fic I mentioned above. What’s the point of writing if you’re not going to take risks and be honest about what you like to write about? It takes honesty and commitment to write anything that strays from the norm. And so I’m glad this person posted this story, because it changed me in a small way (‘what if I shut the fuck up and read more mpreg instead of instantly clicking out?’).

This is another perfect example of how plot is poison and you don’t need it in your life (unless you enjoy poison. In that case consume the plot, write the plot, sniff the plot. And die). A morning in bed, just nuzzling and talking… living life… Again, this made me realize that you can say a lot about two characters just from a morning in bed. It made me want to write 25 pages of dialogue in bed (this and Manuel Puig’s book titled Kiss of the spider woman, which I recommend fervently).

Plot? In this house? We don’t know her. You’re a strong, independent writer. You don’t need no plot.

For a more general response, I’d say that Steele’s worldbuilding is impeccable and made me look at the setting of stories differently.

Foreshadowing is always amazing, but I haven’t read a lot of fics where it’s a prominent element (which is not to say authors aren’t good at it, I just don’t read enough fics to give you a good example of this).

I really like oxymorons and when writers use funny adverbs. GallaPlacidia’s adverbs are to die for, so definitely check out her stories if you’re interested in that.

I also love the way xlydiadeetz writes archs. She does this thing where she divides the story into different… timelines? archs? I… don’t even know. Amazing.

Changing Course chapter 25) tales of enlightenment.

As winter claimed every inch of the shed with it’s frost and cold, the lack of warmth brought the two human inhabitants closer. Although they weren't seeing eye to eye, Piglet had inched closer and closer until Ivar grunted and pulled her close against his freezing body.

“Stop! Stop fighting if you don’t want to freeze to death!” Ivar hissed in her ear as he dodged her elbow. Pinning her wrist in front of her body he held her tight until she stopped resisting. She made a sound that could either be a sob or a grunt and managed to fold her legs up, pressing her freezing feet against Ivar’s knees. It felt like two bolts of ice and he flinched.

For the next few minutes both their bodies shook uncontrollably before their shared blankets and body heat reheated them from the bitterness of winter.

“You stink”, Ivar felt the irresistible need to point out.

“You too, Ivar”, Piglet spat back through clattering teeth.

Ivar grunted again and pressed her harder against his chest. Her warmth slowly started to move in. He could feel it pass through the fabric of his clothes and wash over his skin, met by the beating of her heart.

“I’m not your enemy, Piglet”, Ivar spoke as he pressed his chin down onto her head, “the Christians are. And if you want to survive you need me”.

“You need me,” Piglet responded resolutely, “I can sleep with cattle, you dog with leash. You die.”

“Fine, you won’t die, I will”, Ivar retorted, “but you’d be raped if it weren’t for me. You need me, too.”

Her silence was her answer, so Ivar took the liberty to continue: “we need each other in order to survive, yes?”

“Yes, Ivar”, she sneered and Ivar could practically feel her eyes roll.

“Good, so let’s agree to be civil to each other, at least till the end of winter, yes?”, Ivar spoke and squeezed her tight when she took too long to answer.

“Till end of winter”, Piglet responded unenthusiastically.

The days grew grimmer, shorter, and colder. Life started to be a matter of surviving, because as winter endured, the food was lessening. Most of the cattle had been taken from the shed for slaughter. Of course, being in the lowest position of de Haar, their food was meager and mostly the same: a mass of stale vegetables and potatoes. Meat was off the menu and as the richest started to see less variety on their table, it was nearly impossible for Piglet to steal food. Their food was lukewarm if not cold, as Piglet had to steep through inches of snow to get back to their shed.

Ivar spent most of the time in the dark or twilight, for it was too cold to keep the door open. Cooped up in layers of blankets and furs, he wondered if this was a taste of Hellheim and pledged to do everything within his power to prevent himself from dying and being sent to that place. Because this was not living, this was simply enduring and wishing his toes and fingers wouldn’t be caught by frostbite.

By the end of day, Piglet would return in forms of ice. Frozen to the core, she’d huddle up fast against him. Necessity knew no laws, and she’d throw herself into his lap, wrapping her arms around his shoulders and chest in order to absorb every bit of warmth he had to offer.

It was too cold for ridicule, silence ruled their twilight, both bearing their own shame: for Piglet, it was craving the closeness of a man. For Ivar, it was being someone’s safety blanket.

At night they’d talk. Both of them. Ivar had been the first one to unveil the names of his Gods. During the dreadful days he had nothing to do aside from simply existing and, subconsciously, he didn’t dare to believe he’d make it through the winter. So, in a sentimental way, he wanted someone in this forsaken country to memorize his Viking legacy.

Piglet’s favorite story was fitting: about the Goddess Nott. Her name means merely ‘Night’, riding her black horse named Hrimfaxi. The dew drips off of Hrimfaxi as he carries his Goddess over the worlds. Nott is the granddaughter of Bergelmir, the first Chief via his son Norfi, the famous giant architect who designed Asgard, Thryheim and the hall of Utgard-Lok. Her first husband of three was a Jotun, named Nagifari, and their son’s name was Aud. By her second husband, Annar, a water-giant, she bore Jord, the mother of Thor. Her third husband, Delling, a red Alfar, gave her the son Daeg, who would be the chosen god of the Day. Nott herself is an ancient goddess, one of the oldest before the flood, which she survived by being in the realm of the Dead. Nott’s known for being a wanderer, a wise old woman. Although she’s somewhat distant from most people’s concern, she can be rather helpful - when she chooses- for those lost in the dark, or in the past. At times, she’ll casually drop a bit of her collected wisdom as she passes realms, like a star falling from her skirt.

In the darkness of night, Piglet had her fair share of stories. One in particular stuck with Ivar. It was about the Prophet Yusuf, who’d been the most favoured child of his father. His brothers had been so jealous of him they’d come up with a plan. Yusuf was thrown inside a well and left to die, and his brother’s lied to their father’s face and claimed Yusuf had been eaten by a wolf.

This led to Yusuf being separated from his beloved father for many years, becoming a slave after being rescued from the well by slave-traders. Through constant patience and remembrance of Allah, the prophet was successful in all of life’s tests and was eventually rewarded for his patience. After years of endurance and hardship, he managed to rise, with his patience, bravery and reliance on Allah. With every adversity, we should try to continuously pick ourselves up and continue along the straight path with sabr; patience.

Now, patience wasn’t one of Ivar’s virtues. But desperate times call for desperate measures.

And so, Ivar and Piglet withstood the wind cutting through the cracks, the below zero temperatures, and the frost devouring every bit of warmth that wasn’t cocooned underneath blankets and furs.

Oh, how Ivar loathed the endless winter days.

But eventually the winter months passed, without either of them losing their life or toes. Spring came with a gentle spirit, melting the snow and restoring hope within the heart of all inhabitants of De Haar. Rain instead of snow filled the streets, turning the surroundings of their shed into a murky pool of mud. The first time Piglet entered with grime up to her knees, she laughed in relief. It was a dirty sign of warmth casting the frozen puddles away.

Spring, the end of cold and the beginning of a new, hopeful season. And although it brought joy for most of the inhabitants of de Haar, it welled up doom and sickness inside the stomach of one person in particular. For spring had been her worst enemy, a countdown to one horrific burden she’d never overcome.

Spring would bring a wedding.

There was something off in Piglet’s bearing. Sorrow flashed underneath the surface of her eyes, her shoulders stiffening all the way up to her chin. She hid it well with a smile and an occasional crude remark.

Something was off, Piglet's mental retreatment brought her back to four words per sentence and she ignored Ivar when he tried to make small talk.

When the Giant appeared inside the shed, Ivar knew troubles lay ahead. The man’s stone cold eyes bore themselves into Ivar’s. The Giant’s expression was one of absolute disdain and abhorrence. To him, those two slaves were less than the mud on his leather boots.

The Giant plunked down two buckets filled with a steamy content at the doorstep and threw a bag into Piglet’s hands, all while spitting an order. The young woman clumsily caught the bag and nodded her head in response.

“Ivar, wash”, Piglet ordered and dunked the content of the first bucket in his trough. Hurried, she took the second bucket and retreated to her own box.

One of Ivar’s eyebrows rose all the way up and disappeared underneath his matted hair. If slaves would have been ordered to cleanse themselves back in Kattegat, that only meant one thing; a human sacrifice. But in this land of inept rulers, Christians and God fearing people, Ivar guessed such heathen rituals would be condemned rather than celebrated.

Until further notice, Ivar counted this as a blessing in disguise and slid his arms down into the hot water. Wishing the trough to expand so he could sink into it completely, he gasped and closed his eyes. The dullness of cold finally left the tips of his fingers and before the water could cool off, he dunked his head into the trough. The hot water blocked out all the sounds surrounding him. Ivar sat like that until his back ached and his lungs were on the verge of exploding.

Splashing he withdrew, mouth open like a fish on dry land. And he laughed, a small stream of water ran down his neck all the way down his lower back. Without a moment to waste, Ivar shoved his tunic off and started scraping his skin raw with a cloth.

Soon, the color of the water became murky brown as it cooled. It didn’t stop Ivar’s hasty cleansing ritual; his face, his arms, his legs, chest and lower body were all rid of the layers of filth that hadn’t been cleaned since autumn. The only part of his body he’d taken careful notice of was his backside; dabbing the cloth instead of scrubbing inch for inch.

Goosebumps appeared on his flesh long before Ivar felt clean enough to stop bathing.

“Ivar!” Piglet’s head appeared above their wooden border and Ivar’s mouth dropped in surprise.

“By the Gods Piglet, you have hair!” he exclaimed in awe, staring at the unruly mess of ebony hair curling down Piglet’s shoulders.

Piglet had been about to throw him the content of the Giant’s bag but she stopped mid-way of throwing. She hunched down until only the bag was showing above the box and she swung the bag towards Ivar.

“Change”, was all she snapped, hand gesturing towards the bag.

Now, over the course of months, Piglet had seen pretty much every inch of Ivar, up close. Every embarrassing little detail of his body. But vice versa? No, Piglet had mastered the skill of being mysterious and being an appalling pig. She never bathed, never freshened herself up, and may the Gods strike him down if he’d been lying, Ivar had never seen an inch of her skin above her ankles. Sure, during those long dreadfully cold nights he’d been able to map out her body and physique. He had a good clue of how her true proportions were underneath those rags and tatters.

Yet the question still remained, did Piglet possess a cow tail and a bark covered back?

Pulling his naked lower half along, Ivar crawled in a straight line to their wooden border and peeked through the cracks between the planks. Piglet met his gaze with the passion of a thousand suns, her dark eyes smoldering from his utter lack of shame. She’d draped herself with the closest blanket in reach and cursed at him in her mother’s tongue.

“GO AWAY!”, she shouted at him when Ivar’s eyes trailed over every inch of exposed skin. Which wasn’t a lot; a shoulder, two balled fists and two stomping feet. Yet, this was rather entertaining and a perfect payback for all the times she’d been secretly ogling him.

“What’s your aversion towards nudism Piglet?” Ivar mocked, “does your cunt have fangs, is that it?”

To her dread, Ivar pulled himself up on his feet and swung his arms over their wooden border. Although Piglet had always been keen to inform him that her religion forbid her to harm or murder a human being, her eyes at this point told a completely different story.

Ivar let out a loud harsh cackle of laughter, shaking his head to Piglet’s disheveled appearance.

“Go. Away.”, she repeated again, hissing through her teeth, cloaking her bare shoulder rapidly underneath the woolen fabric.

“Not so mysterious now, huh little Piglet?” Ivar soothed and ruffled his hand coarsely through her thick curling hair, “you truly are something savage, aren’t you?”

She yanked her head away from his touch, nearly losing her balance, causing her to be laughed at by Ivar again.

Snickering, Ivar allowed himself to drop down on his knees and he retreated to the bag Piglet had swung at him. The content turned out to be a new tunic and pants. At least three sizes too big and clearly one of the servant's hand-me-downs, but Ivar was not going to complain about it. He tucked a rope around his waist to secure his new clothes and tied two layers of potato bags around his knees for protection.

Piglet, too, was draped in less raggedy attire. Her long sleeved dress was frayed at the cuffs, but the steel colored fabric was clean. She still chose to wear her bandana, hiding away every inch of her long hair.

“Oh look, it’s princess puritan,” Ivar sneered watching how the muscles of her jaw tightened, “ah poor Piglet, are you giving me silent treatment, all because I risked a peek at your tits?”.

“You disgust me”, Piglet announced bitterly, clapping her hands on her hips, “no respect!”.

“Oh please, Piglet”, Ivar brushed her accusations off with a wave of his hand, “don’t act as if you never peeked at my prick with those ogling black eyes of yours.”

He knew he was playing with fire. During the endless cold nights Piglet had revealed much of her religion to him. He was aware of how ‘longing for the flesh’ was forbidden, haram. As a proud Hijabi, a woman who veiled her hair, Piglet eagerly spread the words of her God, Allah, explaining that covering her hair was a sign of modesty, faith, and protection against evil things in the surrounding world.

In other words, men.

So yes, Ivar was playing with fire, but he’d never been scared to get his hands burned. Besides, antagonizing Piglet was one of the few things he could do to pass time.

But their bickering was abruptly stopped by the Giant. Ivar couldn’t recall a moment the bastard didn’t manage to suck all life out of the room. But spring managed to produce miracles, because as the brute strode into the shed, Ivar’s heart skipped a beat in joy.

The Giant was holding up keys.

I wanted to add some details about both of their religions, it’s my personal interpretation of all the information I found on the big world wide web. So, mistakes could be made, I mean no disrespect. HE often reminds people of olling joints at 3am, red bottomed shoes, imported german beer bottles scattered on the floor, solid gold chains. watch out, though. you wouldn’t believe that THE IMAGE HE PORTRAYS IS A FACADE. finally getting around to writing up my boy’s intro! i know i’m 200 years late, but pls love him anyway!

growing up the son of the president was always to come with it’s own trials and tribulations.

but for seth, he wasn’t always just the son of the president. for a long time, he was just seth jameson. he liked reading books and telling stories. he was always a happy kid that loved spending time with his friends, and telling stories. there was nothing he loved more than reading those stories and then making up his own versions only to tell them to his friends.

his story telling nature traveled through to his later years, and writing short stories became kind of his thing. first it was just for school projects, then in a few competitions. he was skilled with the written word, all of his teachers praised him for it.

but seth’s favourite kind of story to tell came in the form of lying. he’d always been taught the difference between right and wrong. his father made sure to teach him to keep his head on straight, to not get mixed up in the wrong crowds. he was taught the importance of thinking about his future and knowing that if he made wrong choices, they could follow him for the rest of his life.

when he reached his teen years, that became something that stuck in is mind always. he’d study hard in school, only to sneak out at night to drink with his friends. he would pull pranks only to let someone else take the blame for it. soon enough, there became two sides of seth. one that he let everyone see, and one that only a select few did.

becoming the first son of the united states enhanced that. it was a shock to the system when at seventeen, he was thrust into the spotlight under his father, people always wanting to know about him and make him out to be some sort of golden boy.

with everything he’d been taught in mind, seth knew that his public image could be nothing short of flawless and he revelled in that. he went on talk shows and flashed a charming smile, acting humbled to be in such a position of wealth and status. he would go to charity galas and host functions of his own that he knew would have america swooning. he loved his little role of the golden child, and he played into it wholeheartedly.

after high school, he went to study at northwestern university for communications and journalism, his interest in politics a topic that he dreamed to write about. college was good to him, too. he partied, realised his bisexuality (though he doesn’t share that around), and got the chance to experiment.

any time he got into any real trouble, it was easy to pay people off to act like it never happened. waking up drunk in the middle of campus in his underwear? silence was bought, and he’d visit a children’s hospital the next day to curve the rumours. caught with a joint in his hand? a story is sold to the press of him helping his friend curve the habit.

he’s always been a good liar, and it made it easier once the jamesons became a household name.

to the public, he was a saint. in private, he partied too hard, got high too often, and slept around so much he’s likely had more people sign nda’s than his father.

he spent weekends in washington frequently to see his family, and would go wherever he was needed for the jameson cause. as much as he is a fake that holds a bare amount of care for those he affects, he really loves his family. talking shit about them is a surefire way to get a rise out of him and he 10/10 would kill for them. only he’s allowed to shit talk them, okay.

after graduating his degree, he got a job at chicago tribune covering political journalism. he could have gotten hired anywhere he wanted, but he had a soft spot for the summers he always spent in hillston, and the fact that illinois will always be what comes to mind when he thinks of home.

he’s fairly well acclaimed for being a fair journalist when it comes to politics, but in truth, seth likes to control the narrative so subtly that no one really knows what he’s been doing. he’s not above taking bribes from the right politicians. most of them are voices he felt needed to be heard, but there a some that offered a price high enough that he couldn’t turn it down.

They usually fall asleep in a tangle of limbs because Jordy’s clingy now that he’s back in her life and she won’t let go...so then they wake up even more tangled together. Daily rituals just consists of Rafe yelling at the coffee machine and Jordy being the only one who can get it to turn on.

3. Are they open about their relationship? How do they feel about public displays of affection?

Very, VERY open and super big on PDA. They’re not ashamed in the least and want everyone to know they’re together. Totally the couple that’s like “that’s my wife!!!”/”that’s my husband!!!”

5. Nicknames? Pet names? Any in-jokes?

Rafe shortens her name even further to just ‘Jord’ or ‘Jo’ and Jordy usually calls him ‘love’. Tons of in-jokes just because they’ve known each other for so long.

Probably how stubborn and bullheaded they both can be, but... I doubt they’d want anything to change. It makes things interesting, at least.

Yes. Both marriage and children were discussed back in the day. Wes was even planned, but... things happened and marriage was taken off the table for several years.

Oh, they're absolutely that couple that knows what the other's about to say and they’ve picked up soooo many habits from each other. Jordy can especially tell when he’s hiding something, but that’s the mom instinct.

Jordy's not big on expensive things, so Rafe gets her new scarves, books he knows she's been wanting to read, little things that he knows will make her smile. She's the same with him-- just little things because he pretty much already has everything he could ever need. Special occasions are any occasion for them, too, and they'll usually end up surprising each other at the same time.

35. Do they bring out the best in each other, or the worst? Do they have a fatal flaw?

They both tend to bring out the best in each other-- there's a noticeable difference in their personalities after they get together again. Their fatal flaw is 100% hubris, though, and it's... a problem KJSFDdfsjk

The only thing they probably wouldn’t sacrifice is their own children, but besides that, nothing’s off limits.

Rafe initiated their first relationship, but Jordy was the one who kissed him first BOTH times-- though, the second first kiss was while she was extremely feverish and doesn't really count because she doesn't even remember doing it. And idiots that they were, they didn't realize they were mutually in love until the end of high school.

They don't PREFER it, but they're not against going out once in a while and they both hold their drink pretty well-- Jordy moreso.

Is Jesus a Mythical figure based on the Norse god Thor? Um, NO, and here is why:

Thor, Son of the god Odin and the goddess Fjorgyn (aka Jord, aka Hilodyn), was the Norse god of Thunder. He flew on a bronze chariot pulled by two goats (Tanngnost and Tanngrisnir), and battled frost giants, creating thunder whenever he struck one with his hammer Mjollnir (though some sources state that it was caused by his chariot rumbles).

Though eventually becoming the sworn enemy of Loki, god of fire, Thor’s greatest nemesis was with Loki’s child Jormungand, the Midgard Serpent (due to the fact that it was so big that it encircled the earth). Eventually, Thor and Jormungand would one day clash at Ragnarok, the Norse battle of Armageddon. There, Thor will finally get his wish and slay the Midgard Serpent, only to perish in the venom that flows from its body. Though not the King of the gods (a title reserved for Odin only), Thor was nevertheless the strongest of the gods and more beloved by Norse farmers and Icelandic colonists (while the Viking raiders put more emphasis on Odin).

But was he more than just the Norse God of Thunder?

Was he the basis for Jesus Christ?

Let’s look at their “parallels” and see why this is a thick-headed idea:

1. Incarnate god?

No. He was never incarnated as a human.

2. Trinity?

No. In the Temple of Uppsala, there was supposedly a statue of him along two others (one of Freyr and another of Odin), but this doesn’t mean that they were a trinity. They were simply three gods put together. Indeed, the idea that there were three such statues in the temple has been called into question. Thor was never considered part of a Trinity.

3. Son of God?

Yes, but not in the same way. While Thor was the son of Odin, Jesus is God the Son, a part of the trinity of God that existed long before he was born into the world as a human being. God did bring about his conception by divine power and thus makes Jesus a “Son of God” (Luke 1:135), but he existed in the infinite past (John 1:1-3).

4. Born of a Virgin?No, Odin and Fjorgyn had sex.

5. Born of a union of Heaven and Earth?

Thor’s father was the sky god Odin (also the personification of the sky). His mother, Fjorgyn, is an earth goddess. Thus, he is the product of a union of Heaven and Earth.

Though Jesus existed in spirit long before he was born (John 1:1-3), his conception came about because God used his powers to conceive him in Mary’s womb. Heavenly god, earthly woman, together conceiving God the Son incarnate, a product of a union of Heaven and earth. Of course, this union was not sexual in nature (Luke 1:26-37), but then again, not all such unions in ancient religions and myth were said to be sexual in nature. For example, the first man Adam was made out of the dust of the earth, and later brought to life when God breathed the “breath of life” into him (Genesis 2:7). Animals were likewise made in this fashion (Genesis 2:19, compare with Genesis 1:30, 7:14-16, 21-22).

It is true that both Jesus and Thor are both, in a sense, a product of a union of heaven and earth, but…is this a good parallel?

Well, it’s a bit of a broad parallel.

As I mentioned, there are other figures in religious texts and world myth that are products of a union of heaven and earth. Indeed, there are many. Adam and the first animals in the Bible are several Old Testament examples. The Titans, Hechantonchires (50 headed, hundred handed giants) and the primordial cyclopes were all likewise children of a union of heaven and earth. Specifically, their parents were a sky god (Ouranos (Roman Uranus) and an earth goddess (Gaia). Later, when their son Cronus castrated Ouranos, his blood fell on the earth, creating the Erinyes (Roman Furies), the Meliae (ash tree nymphs) and the Gigantes or giants, massive creatures who had enormous snakes for legs.

Given this, can we really say that Jesus’s physical body, being a product of a union of Heaven and Earth, was based on Thor being a product of Heaven and Earth?

No.

6. Star proclaimed his birth?

No.

7. Wisemen?

No. Odin would have no doubt visited him after he was born, and Odin was wise, but…to make a comparison between that and the Wisemen is one of the greatest stretches imaginable, especially considering the fact that none of the Wise Men were Jesus’ father. Indeed, they visited Jesus about 2 years after his birth, not on the night he was born (Matthew 2:1-16).

8. Someone sought his life shortly after he was born?

No.

9. Taught in a temple as a boy?

No.

10. Baptized?

No.

11. Tempted by the Devil?

Loki, the Norse Equivalent of the Devil, at times got Thor into predicaments and brought him misery, but he never tempted him.

12. Miracle worker?

All gods were, big deal.

13. Turned water into wine?

No.

14. Multiplied bread and fish?

No.

15. Walked on water?

No.

16. Healed the sick?

No.

17. Raised the dead?

Thor’s hammer could raise animals from the dead. He would often kill and eat Tanngnost and Tanngrisnir, using his hammer to resurrect them afterwards (though their bones had to be intact for it to work). However, though his hammer had power over death to a certain extent, it could only resurrect animals, not human beings.

Jesus didn’t need a hammer.

18. Had power over storms?

Jesus did calm a storm (Matthew 8:23-27, Mark 4:35-41, Luke 8:22-25. Likewise, Thor, being the god of Thunder, had control over storms. However, there is an important difference; Thor had control over the storms because he is the god of Thunder, while Jesus had control over the storms because he, being God, is omnipotent (Matthew 19:26, compare with John 1:1-3, 1 Corinthians 8:6, Hebrews 1:3, Colossians 1:17, Titus 2:13, 2 Peter 1:1). Jesus is more than a Thunder God.

He is the God of all.

19. Cast out demons?

No, Thor never performed exorcisms.

20. Betrayed?

Loki betrayed him on several occasions. Once, he cut off the hair of Thor’s wife Sif. Thor chased him down and nearly killed him. Indeed, he would have done so if Loki hadn’t vowed to get Sif some new hair. On another occasion, Loki convinced Thor to leave both his hammer and belt of strength behind before they visited Geirrod the Frost Giant. Previously, Geirrod had once taken Loki prisoner. The fire god obviously didn’t want to die, so they made a deal; Loki would be spared if he agreed to bring Thor to Geirrod…without his hammer in tow. Thus, he would seemingly be defenseless when the Frost Giant made to kill him. However, along the way, Thor and Loki met Grid, a frost giantess who warned Thor about Geirrod’s intentions.

Worried about him, she gave Thor several weapons, including an unbreakable staff and a strength belt of her own. These proved handy when he battled Geirrod, his daughters and his servants, slaying them all. Likewise, Jesus was betrayed by Judas for 30 pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16, 47-56).

A parallel, right?

Not so much.

I mean, how many people, and how many people in religious texts where shown to be betrayed? How many characters of world myth were likewise betrayed? It’s a bit of a broad category, don’t you think? Look at the Bible alone: Jacob betrayed Esau (Genesis 27), only for Laban his father-in-law and Leah to betray him in turn in Genesis 29. Joseph was betrayed by his brothers (Genesis 37:12-36). God was betrayed by the Israelites whenever they turned to worship other gods, such as during the Golden Calf incident (Exodus 32). Delilah betrayed Samson, cutting off his hair so that the Philistines could capture him (Judges 16). Absalom, David’s son, betrayed his father by launching a rebellion against him (2 Samuel 15).

I mean…really, folks? Really?

This would be a stronger parallel if Loki had betrayed Thor for money, but that’s not the case; he did it for kicks (Sif) and to save his life (Geirrod).

21. Crucified?

No, Thor is destined to die by the venom of Jormungand.

22. Death linked to a serpent?

As stated above, Thor is prophesied to die due to Jormungand’s venom. Right before this happens, Thor slays Jormungand with his hammer.

How does this supposedly parallel Christ?

In Genesis 3, after Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit, God lays the hammer down on both them and the Serpent, who tempted Eve to eat it. He turns his attention first to the serpent, telling him that he is cursed above all animals, that he is to move on his belly and eat dust.

Then he says something startling in verse 15:

“And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel."

This is perplexing, since “Seed” was a euphemism for sperm in the ancient world. Since men have sperm and women don’t, one is left to wonder why the woman’s “seed” is mentioned here instead of man’s. True, some translations have “Offspring” instead of seed, but the Hebrew word translated here, Zera, primarily means seed and semen. It can also refer to offspring, but only by extension. This, among other reasons, is why this passage is considered a Messianic prophecy. After all, Jesus didn’t have an earthly father, but a Heavenly Father. Jesus was conceived by divine power working within Mary.

Thus “seed of a woman”.

This prophecy fits even more when we realize that Satan entered Judas, leading him to betray Christ (Luke 22:3-6, 47-53). As a result, Jesus was arrested and later died on the cross. However…he arose from the grave three days later, enabling mankind to accept him as Lord and Savior and thus have eternal life. Satan’s spiritual stranglehold on all mankind was over (see Colossians 1:13, Hebrews 2:14).

Can you say “backfire”?

Satan caused Christ’s death…which in turn destroyed Satan’s spiritual domination over the souls of men. Now people can escape his yoke if they accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. By Jesus’ sacrifice, Satan was defeated.

Keep in mind; Satan is called “Serpent” on several occasions in the Bible (Revelation 12:9, 20:2). Contrary to popular opinion, the identification of the serpent with Satan is actually an ancient one (as indicated in the passages from Revelation cited above). Indeed, one ancient scroll, the “Visions of Amram”, depicts a “Prince of Darkness” in a serpentine fashion. Archeological evidence from ancient Israel shows that they depicted Seraphim angels as winged serpents (sometimes as just serpents). There is much evidence to show that the serpent in the Garden was in reality a powerful supernatural being whose appearance was serpent-like, indeed Satan himself.

Satan, who took on a serpentine fashion, bringing about Christ’s death, only to be defeated as a result, while Thor kills the world serpent, then succumbing to its venom.

This is a parallel for sure, but not a perfect one. Indeed, unlike Jormungand, Satan does die; he’s only defeated. He isn’t even shown to take a serpentine form when he enters Judas and gets him to betray Christ. There is a similarity here, but this reeks more of coincidence than of one borrowing from the other.

Unless, of course, Its not Christians who are doing the borrowing…

No, he is not to resurrect. You’re thinking of the Thor movie.

24. Rules over a future age?

No, his sons Magni and Modi rule in a future age, along with several other gods.

Not many similarities, are there?

Indeed, its highly likely that there were originally even less similarities than these. As I said in my previous article on the Norse god Balder, the oldest texts on Norse myths were written by Christian Norsemen in the dark ages, men who added biblical elements to them. I also noted that the Vikings added Christian elements to their faith centuries before this, even placing Jesus Christ into their pagan pantheon. Thus, if there was any borrowing…it was the other way around, the myth of Thor borrowing from the story of Christ in the Gospels. This doesn’t mean that Thor wasn’t worshipped as a God before the arrival of Christianity, or that the Norse were inspired by Christ to come up with Thor (he was worshipped long before Scandinavia was converted), but It does mean that the Norse myths were Christianized by Norse Christians.

Thus, Thor wasn’t the inspiration for Christ.

Jesus wasn’t based on a hammer-wielding god of thunder. Jesus is God almighty.

Look, rankings, sleepers, busts, cheat sheets, mock drafts, a sound draft strategy — all good stuff; all necessary for a successful 2018 fantasy season (Not really, but humor us). But, as we all know, the most important thing you can do before the season starts is come up with the more creative, funniest and best fantasy football team name of anyone in your league.

I know what you’re thinking: “But how is having a good team name going to help me score more fantasy points?” That’s a dumb question and you should feel bad for asking it. A clever , pun-based fantasy team name encapsulates the spirit of the game like nothing else. It’s a time-wasting pursuit that usually falls short of its goal and leaves you feeling frustrated, but if everything breaks right, you’ll briefly have a sense of accomplishment before remembering you have to do some mundane real-world chore, like take the garbage out or pay your water bill. Also, no one else wants to hear about it, so just shut up already.

We here at Sporting News Fantasy want to help. And while we can’t help with inside jokes about the time your brother-in-law soiled himself in a Taco Bell drive-through during his bachelor party, we can provide a list of pre-made puns for virtually any player you might have on your team. 2017 year in review

1 - What did you do in 2017 that you’d never done before?

Ran two half marathons, used a crock pot, started a full time job with benefits 2 - Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Last years resolution: to cry. (It didnt happen, for the second year in a row)

A couple of my friends from high school did! A few more are pregnant.

I don’t think so.

Ghana. And to see my loves in London!

More tranquility in my life. More faith in myself. 7 - What date from 2017 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

6/3/2017- the day I left for Africa and made a life long goal come true.

Finishing two half marathons.
