fun crossover moment fact for today: josephine stephenson, the composer-musician, who played piano in the studio recording of 'the ultracheese' on tranquility base hotel and casino also did the cellos and some vocals in damon albarn's 2021 album the nearer the mountain more the stream flows
and
andre de ridder who was the conductor of the studio recording of max richter's vivaldi four seasons recomposition (one of my favourite classical music pieces of all time), played violin on the album.
and
ridder conducted the premiere of owen pallett's (yes our owen pallett) piece 'songs from an island' with the toronto symphony orchestra. also owen did the strings/conducting for both taylor swift's red tv and haim's something to tell you.

Meet Josephine "Josie" Stephenson! Her infant trait is calm, and she currently resembles Will Poulter.

The song Where the time went by Ex:Re, Josephine Stephenson, 12 ensemble
Just gives me WCIL vibes. Like not fully but omg the lyrics 😭😭
Tumblr media
Oh my god even just the strings and music had my sobbing before I really analyzed the lyrics. Those last few lines 🤧🤧🤧🤧
"Whisper in your ear, 'God I missed you. It's been too much, I can't stand it.'" AND "Walking so tall, I can't reach you. Happier, pretty picture with some new pretty little blue."
I deserve this pain I guess but DAMN

Also who has he worked on TBHC and The Car with? I just remember the usual boys club. And please don't say the third assistant of the assisting producer or something like that. // string arranger Bridget Samuels on The Car. Not sure if Emma Marks counts since she was apparently an assistant to Loren Humphrey but she wasn’t credited as an assistant and was even named before Loren as the people who recorded strings at RAK studios. (French-British😂) Pianist Josephine Stephenson on multiple tracks on TBHC
So string people or people with instrument skills Alex doesn't have. Explains that.
And that's like two or three people and no major involvement. They were hired musicians. Not sure that really counts. By that standard he's got three women on his touring team. lol

Indie stalwarts does seem like a weird phrase that belong to a completely different cultural context,   because the current musical scene doesn't differentiate between the genres that much. However, I would claim that indie still exist as a set of abstract signifiers like in the case of Arctic Monkeys. They began as an internet band in a way, their DIY demos got them a record deal, though they eventually persisted on their path. Sure, their sound might occasionally feel like an indie-garage-by-numbers, but they slowly evolved into whatever Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino is. Mind you, I admire this platter of theirs, I've said this before, since they released that one as the follow-up to their biggest success.

Oliver Twist
