Selected sections/summary of Esteban's and his Race Engineer, Josh Peckett's interviews in the Alpine F1 Team Inside Season 2022 Book. The book is in french so I used google translate.
How they met (and met again)
They met in 2016 at Manor. Josh was Pascal Wherlein's engineer at that time. Stuart Barlow, Esteban's Performance Engineer was also in Manor in Pascal's side of the garage.
They all met again in Renault at the end of 2019. Josh was Esteban's Performance Engineer then while Stuart was involved in the test program with the young drivers.
When the opportunity arose they all thought about reforming the team they had in Manor and Esteban pushed for Josh to be his race engineer in 2021 alongside Stuart as his performance engineer.
Their Relationship
Esteban: "There are a few people with whom it clicks right away. We understand each other very well. Age may play a role and makes us more on the same page (they are only about 6 years apart)".
"We're very close, I see Josh, Stuart, Dave and Mathieu, my whole team on my side of the garage, more often than my family. We have small dinners before the races. I also meet them in the simulator when I go to the Enstone factory. These are people I really like. They're more than coworkers. It's a big family."
Josh: "Given the time we spend together over the course of a season, it's better to get along humanly. It would be very difficult to work with a driver with whom you have no affinity. That would be quite embarassing even. I've been lucky so far, because I've always gotten along well with the drivers I've worked with. It is natural to respect each other's schedule. Esteban has a lot of commitments and obligations between races, so I know there are days when he won't want to talk about work. So I just send him a little message to get some news and it's much better that way. We have to find the right balance."
The role of a Race Engineer
A performance engineer will focus on two or three really specific engineering tasks. In comparison, a race engineer needs to have a more global view of the situation. They have to manage a small teams of mechanics, engineers, tyre managers, etc. There is a more managerial aspect compared to other more specialized positions.
A Race engineer acts like a filter for the driver. It could be overwhelming for the engineer to hear multiple voices in the headset and to know who to listen to first, and to quickly know what interests you at this or that moment. But it gets easier over time.
Communication between driver and engineer
Josh: "With Esteban, it's clear from the beginning. We try to stick to the essentials with brief and straightforward exchanges, but it's rare to have prolonged periods of silence during the race."
Esteban: "Josh has voice that carries and knows how to calm down, even though I'm still very calm when I'm driving. It's essential for us to be understood on the radio. Above all, he has this ability to anticipate, so that he gives the right information at the right time. ....having the data without asking for it is very satisfying. We save a lot of time when the engineer is one step ahead."

More '2023 favourites' Polls! Next up: race engineers!
We love them for different reasons, the fact that they're mad smart, have wonderful relationships with their drivers, are known to be hilarious over team radio, or they just look really good in button up shirts.
Because poll options only go up to 12, I'm splitting them into two groups of 10, with the top 5 from each going into a final poll.
Everyone will be listed in alphabetical order by surname, with their team and driver in brackets, so if you can't find the one you want click here.
(Please reblog for sample size!)

So I don't really follow Alpine closely but from what I've seen their management has always seemed a bit messy. This was further reinforced with Piastri mess and how things went with Alonso. I've noticed Pierre fans say since the deal was signed that Alpine seems very supportive of Pierre, showing that he's wanted and valued, especially from Laurent Rossi I think. And tbh they haven't seemed particularly supportive of their drivers before so I thought to ask you if it was the same case with Este? Did they act the same way about him as they're doing for Pierre now?
hm, i think it is a bit different with este because he joined while it was still renault under cyril abiteboul.
i do think they did show appreciation when they gave him a new (and better) engineer in josh peckett in 2021, someone este has worked with before in manor, and also some new people on his side of the garage. because it worked better for este and it showed. and of course the trust they put in him signing him until 2024 back in 2021.
but also, laurent rossi is very messy. he managed to freeze out both marcin budowski and alain prost. especially how they handled prost leaving - announcing it without prost knowing - was incredibly bad. prost himself came for rossi, saying he was a selfish dick who wants to be on top deciding everything alone.
rossi also often makes dumbass comments to media. i remember when este had the problems with his cracked chassis for a few races, and immediately rossi labelled him as number two driver, only for este to go and win hungary and rossi doing a 180 pretending he always knew este had it in him. and now of course him acting all tough about the alonso este clashes.
since otmar szfanauer joined, rossi has taken a backseat, at least publically. but otmar also sometimes makes odd comments, though i do prefer him over rossi.
i have seen that renault/alpine has always been seen as messy. daniel also was shocked at their disorganization, and i guess that also factored into alonso and oscar leaving.
in general, i think it is a supportive team to have, but the leading bosses are very uh peculiar.

FIA investigating Ocons scary near-miss with people in pit lane | 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix
The FIA says it is investigating a near-miss between Esteban Ocon and a group of people in the pits during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Alpine driver narrowly avoided running into the group standing in the pit lane when he came in to change tyres on the final lap of the race. Ocon ran almost the entire race on the same set of hard compound tyres after starting from the pit lane. He came back into the pits on the final lap to fulfil his requirement under the regulations to run at least two compounds during the race. As Ocon peeled into the pit lane, preparations had already begun to assemble parc ferme with photographers amassing around a fence erected to separate the top three finishers from the rest of the field. As Ocon headed down the pit lane, photographers and other personnel were forced to scramble out of the way of the Alpine, Ocon narrowly avoiding a handful of people as he drove passed. Alpine completed the pit stop and Ocon finished the final lap on soft tyres, crossing the finish line in 15th. On his way back to parc ferme, Ocon’s race engineer Josh Peckett apologises for not warning his driver that there were people in the live pit lane. “Sorry as well about the people on track at the pit entry,” Peckett said. “I didn’t realise they were there until you were already at them.” “Yeah,” Ocon replied. “[A] bit scary.” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, who witnessed the incident as his team were preparing to celebrate their one-two victory, said the FIA should look into changing its post-race procedures. “That needs a review,” Horner told Sky, “because Esteban’s within his rights to pit on the last lap and finish the race in the pit lane, I think, if he wanted to. “The FIA needs to perhaps police a little better before the end of a race.” A similar scenario occured on the final lap of the Australian Grand Prix last year when Alexander Albon came into the pits as the parc ferme area was being constructed. Firing Cyril was the right decision. See how good Esteban is doing after Marcin finally cleaned uo his engineering team.
I half agree with this and I half don't. Switching Esteban's racing engineer was honestly the best decision they could have made for Esteban and the team. And honestly, the last two years Cyril was extremely focused on Daniel because they were paying him a shitload so he really needed to focus on that investment - especially since he believed that it was a longterm project together. I don't agree with the way they fired Cyril though and I think that the team would have worked well with Cyril and Marcin leading the team - as it was supposed to be this year. BUT Marcin has done a great job with restructuring and with bringing in newer eyes.
send me a ☕️ and an opinion (popular or unpopular) and i’ll say whether i agree or disagree
