Many people don't know this, but at the time I was still suffering with vision problems from my crash in Silverstone. So the track sometimes started to go really wavy for me, and during that race I was battling, of course, Lewis catching me but at the same time battling myself because I was struggling with my vision. It was like riding a wave on a boat while going at 300km/h. So I had to try and control my breathing in a different way to try and get rid of the problem- nothing else was working. For quite a number of laps, I was almost about to stop the car because I couldn't see properly. It happened at tracks that were very bumby or had loads of advertising boards. I never told anyone at that point as I had a Championship battle.

A Guide to Lewis Hamilton and Peter Bonnington

Recently I have been convincing people to become obsessed with whatever Lewis and Bono have so instead of repeating myself unnecessarily I have decided to make this handy dandy Bible guide to their journey together!

1. The Basics

Lewis and Bono have the longest running engineer and driver pairing in the history of the sport.

Sir Lewis Hamilton: if you don’t know who he is then I’m slightly surprised you are here but I am not here to judge. Sir Lewis Hamilton is a British F1 driver who has won 7 world championship titles with the Mercedes team! He’s a legend in the sport. He made his debut with McLaren in 2007 and has been with Mercedes since 2013.

Peter “Bono” Bonnington: Bono is senior race engineer for Mercedes. He has been race engineer since 2011 where he worked with other 7 time world champion Michael Schumacher. After Schumacher left Bono was paired with Lewis and they have been together ever since! He has been widely regarded as the most successful and most well known race engineer.

Note: for some reason there was a misconception going around that Bono was 10 years older than he really was. Let’s put this to rest: his birthday is 12 February 1975. Source

It’s Hammertime: maybe one of the most famous Lewis radio messages. Bono explains that during the years where radio messages were more strict they needed a code word to let Lewis know it was time to really go all out. Out on track the race engineer is the critical link from the team in the garage to the driver. They must analyze all the data and determine what the driver needs to know without overwhelming them.

thinking about how in February 2022 Aramco became a joint title-sponsor of the Aston Martin F1 Team. saudi arabia has a plan called Saudi Vision 2030 in which saudi arabia and mohammed bin salman are attempting to diversify the nation's economy by investing their oil fortunes into other industries and boosting tourism. i know that jeddah gp was planned in 2019 and added to the calendar in 2021, and so i'm sure F1 is a big part of their attempt to grow sports and entertainment in saudi arabia.

same with the miami grand prix added in 2022, since Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia, Goldman Sachs and a ton of other tech and finance companies are relocating and expanding in Miami, starting from the pandemic onward.

have you considered that maybe 'being a fan of someone' isn't the same as 'agreeing with every thing this human being says'?

have you considered that maybe people can criticise people and be a fan of them at the same time?

have you considered that maybe people are a fan of a racing driver because he's good at, well, racing? the very essence of why he's famous in the first place? that maybe people think he's just really good at racing and that's that?

just some thoughts!

Starting with your first question, of course one does not have to agree with "everything" someone says. But, at least to me, repeated offensive remarks followed by no apology signal someone's belief system and how they don't feel accountable for their words, or don't even consider them harmful. Again, personally, if someone called me a ableist slur or I learned a celebrity called someone that slur, that would be enough for me to stop supporting them publicly because it shows a clear lack of respect to a marginalized group. Max has certainly said things I agree with, but he has also said things I consider deeply offensive and for that reason, I do not support him and I am naturally suspicious of people that do because it signals to me they don't consider how harmful that language can be.

To the second question, I would love to see Max fans be self-critical or acknowledge his behavior but I have never seen either. The only people who talk about his actions towards Lewis have been Lewis fans themselves or people that are neutral/fans of other drivers. Going back to my first point, to say to yourself "Max said offensive things but I'll forgive him for it" seems to me a way to justify yourself and your own feelings.

Now of course max is "good" at racing (I do have a bone to pick with how reckless he is and that several rules had to be put into place specifically because of his racing style). For example, the "leave at least one car width" rule was put in place because of Max and I would recommend watching races like Hungary 2017, Monza 2018, Monza 2021, Jeddah 2021, Austria 2019, amongst others to see what I'm addressing. Also, Max's racing and his problematic behavior are deeply connected, he used the slurs over the radio to refer to another driver. He physically pushed Ocon moments after a race, these are inextricably linked to his mindset and performance as a driver. He has also said shitty things outside of the context of racing, like making a joke about "purchasing" his girlfriend, but I was specifically referring to words and actions done within F1.

To the last bit about why he's "famous", I understand if you only started watching F1 in the last two years why you might think that's the case, but Max was enormously popular well before he had even won more than one race. I posted a while back a picture of a Max fan in 2017 with a banner saying "Max, make F1 great again" and it's clear a lot of his fans became fans because of their racist hatred toward Lewis and that he represented a possible "great white hope", a rhetoric repeated by the steward Derek Warwick. I would recommend looking at the backlash and hatred directed at Lewis after the 2021 British GP (where Redbull had to release a statement saying they do not condone racist language) to see that many Max fans, in fact what seemed like the majority on platforms like Twitter/X, were specifically fans because they hated Lewis.
