INTEREST CHECK: Atlantis: The Lost Empire 25th Anniversary Fan Zine

Hello! My name is Bree and I’m an artist living in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire was a huge inspiration growing up and I was looking to see if others wanted to collaborate to put together a fan zine to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the film’s theatrical release in June 2026! This would be something to showcase fan art and writings about the characters, story, and shorter fanfics of headcanons/backstories/lore/etc.

This isn’t something set in stone and I’m currently gauging interest for participation/help to head the project.

Due to political instability and tariffs for the United States, I’m unsure if larger merch beyond domestic stickers or prints (such as pins or acrylic keychains) would be able to be included as merch tiers, but if this is a project that would be done at a larger scale with print production being outsourced/not done locally by myself, I image any profits left after printing and productions/distribution could be donated to the participating artists to support cost of living as well as an ocean conservation or scientific studies non profit.

If you are interested in this project, please fill out the table form below! I am really looking to work alongside some others who may have more experience in tackling larger projects on a timeline who are familiar with production, editing, project management, distribution, or fundraising campaigns, as I am not experienced in all of this pipeline or the finances of crowdfunding at scale (and how to avoid the ire of one MichaelMouse). If it sounds like you would fit the bill and would like to help lead this fan zine project along with myself and others, please mark so in the form along with your previous experience.

Imagined timeline would have participant submissions collected by end of 2025/early 2026 to allow time for production, print, and distribution alongside the June 2026 anniversary. Unless there’s unusually high interest, this is open to all artistic skill levels. USE OF AI OR GENERATIVE AI/LLMs IS PROHIBITED. The crew put some much human love and care into the film itself, we must do the same!

Notes on a BOTW/TOTK Atlantis: The Lost Empire au

Milo Thatch - Zelda -> it just makes more sense for her personality to make her the passionate scholar rather than the warrior princess.

Kida Nedakh - Link -> less an actual prince and more of an out-of-time wild child who was taken in by the king and queen.

Preston Whitmore - Impa

Commander Lyle Rourke - Ganondorf

Lieutenant Helga Sinclair - Riju -> much less overtly villainous than Helga, and in fact turns against Ganondorf pretty quickly once he lays a hand on the royal family. She's also not the one who recruits Zelda; Paya is the one who takes Helga's role in that particular instance.

Dr. Joshua Sweet - Sidon -> the Zora have healing powers and he is one gigantic sweetheart.

Audrey Rocio Ramirez - Tulin -> young airship mechanic. Teba was part of the expedition that found the Journal/Tablet.

Vincenzo "Vinny" Santorini - Yunobo -> because of the whole explosions thing, though the personality is drastically different.

Gaëtan "Mole" Molière - Josha -> up the child prodigy aspect rather than Mole's overwhelming weirdness (given that Josha is the head of the Depths investigation team this just makes sense to me).

Wilhemina Packard - Purah

Jebidiah "Cookie" Farnsworth - Robbie -> these two are undercover as the communications officer and cook respectively and were in fact tasked by Impa to keep an eye on Ganondorf (all those moments where Packard is gossiping with her friend Marge instead of watching comms? That's Purah reporting directly to Impa through code); they take over the expedition after Ganondorf betrays everyone.

Kakeshim Nedakh - Rauru -> create a role for Mineru - makes more sense for her to become queen after Rauru's death than for Link to become king.

The Queen - Sonia

The Leviathan is either the Colgera or a giant Flux Construct. Maybe even a literal Divine Beast.

what are your character’s goals? do they have any present allegiances?

currently, with free time on her hands and a clock ticking loudly in her ear, josette laughlin has decided to dedicate herself to saving her surviving younger siblings from the fate that awaits them - whatever it takes, even if it means letting kai out of his cell. not that that's a problem anymore.

her present allegiance is to the general good, though she's selfish in more ways than she'd like to admit.

what has your character been up to before the start of our group? 

up until recently she was serving as an army medic, where she developed and patented a wildly successful battle field medical clamp, only recently setting up roots at whitmore college and hospital in her retirement. of course, the gemini wasn't just coming to town for a job opportunity - she came to town to be closer to the only bennett witch she knew was still alive - bonnie bennett.

have you altered anything about your character’s canon?

not necessarily altered, but these are key points to know about my intepretation of jo

she was born and raised in the gemini coven where she survived not thrived for twenty-two years until she was made a pariah in the aftermath of may 10, 1994

she had a full ride to a prestigious school on the east coast at eighteen and almost jumped ship then - but she couldn't leave her brother behind so she stayed and attended community college

when their mother died in 1992, jo became a pseudo mother and head matriarch of the family, juggling taking care of the house, six kids, looking after her brother and attending school even as she grew more and more anxious and lost faith in what the coven stood for

four of her siblings were murdered when she was twenty-two and she was impaled by the person she trusted the most. making the decision to go along with trapping her brother away wasn't a choice she ever wanted to make but she saw no other way to protect the two innocent children she had left. she has been haunted by this day for the rest of her life.

a twinless twin in the gemini coven and a walking liability and a pariah, joshua was faced with two choices: cut off the loose end ensuring kai could NEVER find a loophole to exploit and take the coven from him or leave and not return - and he let jo live, and so she left, stealing away the ascendent as a last way to protect her brother and moved to the east coast and finished medical school, immediately joining the military as a medic upon finishing medical school and constantly put herself in dangerous situations to silence the nightmares and memories for as long as she could.

is there anything you’re potentially interested in exploring romantically for your character / what do you, or could you, ship?

i'm pretty open but it'd have to be a member of the older crowd and it's not a priority for her - jo has previously had flings with men she's come across in her life - typically older but as long as it's age appropriate... anything is possible! also, she's a bicon and you better not forget it

what sort of current or future connections/plots are you looking for?

any and all !!! give me patients, students, people over the age of twenty... give this (currently) depowered witch ALL the dynamics !!!

Behold, screencaps from the movie Cass, that label David Dastmalchian's character, Joshua Whitmore, as a meow meow. Granted, Joshua is a bit messed up, but not a villain. He is one of the few DD characters, in fact, who is not and never was a villain. lol

I'm sorry this is so blurry. I'm not good at making screencaps. But, that is Joshua hunkered down on the left. :D Cass was released in 2013 and can claim precedence. lol

it seems people don't understand. a GLUP SHITTO is a character in a very popular piece of media (like star wars) that if you asked a random person or even a casual fan, they wouldn't know who the fuck that is. a BLORBO is just your little guy. can be any kind of character they're just your little GUY. a POOR LITTLE MEOW MEOW is a villain, usually with a sad backstory, who you are defending and woobifying. they've done WRONG. not everyone can be a poor little meow meow. just because they're pathetic doesn't mean they're a meow meow that mf had to commit CRIMES. if you want a pathetic little fucker of any moral persuasion that is a BABYGIRL. usually male, doesn't have to be. just has to be kind of fucked up. get your terminology CORRECT

These screen shots are all from the movie Cass (2016).   The ones with David Dastmalchian in a suit come from a dream sequence where the young man with him, Franklin, dreams of being an astronaut.   And, mmm mmm, David Dastmalchian cleans up very nice!  

The fourth one isn’t great, but...Dastmalchian on a throne!  How many of his characters would love that?  

The last photo is the meow meow shot I mentioned in another post.  That’s him in the lower left, almost blurred out.

so for the better part of tonight @saisai-chan and i have been talking about this but. essentially what we’ve done is reimagine “atlantis: the lost empire” with gf characters in the leading roles, because the two stories actually have some decidedly similar things in common. the basic ideas being:

the expedition is kicked off/funded by mcgucket (who’s essentially filling the role of mr whitmore), and who assembles a team consisting of both the necessary academic experts (with ford essentially as milo) and……. other, more questionable services (less exact parallels here but stan is very much inspired by/taking much of the role of vinny and soos and wendy sort of split similarities to audrey)

(this is more than slightly awkward, as stan and ford’s backstory is not dissimilar to canon. they haven’t seen each other in years. this was a complete and utter accident. cue bickering)

rourke is more complicated because we wanted bill to take the role but also know that an important archaeological expedition would not hire a triangle, so we ultimately decided that what no one knows is that he’s actually possessing a human form that made a deal with him for wealth and power (more on bill later)

when they get to atlantis, the kingdom is in shambles because they have no definite leader – dipper and mabel (who are splitting the role of kida), the young prince and princess, aren’t yet old enough to take the throne. but after the old king’s passing no one was left to lead and the knowledge of the city was largely lost

(side note: candy and grenda are also atlanteans because we were thinking that mabel having a warrior girl gang was perfect)

a lot of the plot progresses pretty similarly from there, with the exception that stan is also decidedly involved in helping the younger twins figure out the secrets of the city (this is largely a result of him very begrudgingly keeping an eye on ford)

the heart of atlantis is sort of like the rift in this au – bill wants to get his hands on it because it’s a massive source of energy he can wreak havoc with. and that’s the other thing relevant to bill – he’s disguised himself as a human expedition leader to get what he wants, but being an ancient powerful force himself, he’s one of the reasons the city of atlantis was forced to descend under the sea to hide in the first place. he’s been after the heart for a long, long time

also relevant to the heart: mabel is the one that absorbs its force the way kida does (we thought that was a good parallel to both nwhs and the whole plot with the bubble)

from there things progress pretty similarly to the movie: bill reveals he wants to take the heart at the cost of the city (although there’s also probably a big reveal that he’s. you know. been a demon this whole time), the team objects to this, fight back, and stop him

those are the general basics of the idea? we’ve been. very entertained and honestly kind of excited about how well it works

Off to the right of Milo’s “desk” in the basement of the Smithsonian, we can see a framed arrowhead, mounted on a lanyard; it’s beside Thaddeus’s hat and a photograph of Milo and his grandpa. I like to think it’s the same piece of compressed shale and zinc pyrite that he and his grandfather found on that hike.
