We left Key West this morning. It was seven months in paradise, and we'll be back in May. We also left behind our spirit-dog, Kasey (2013-2023). Cancer took him away on Tuesday. Lastly, we leave behind the 60-30-10 color rule and the creation of a guest bedroom.

What this house taught this month:

Don’t buy everything at once. What’s the joy in rushing? When designing your apartment home, it’s going to feel much more personal and less Pottery Barn perfect if you decorate over time.

Color-drench your apartment for an orderly color scheme. We've experimented with a split complementary palette (orange, blue, grey), but monochromatic orange palette is best.

Showcase your favorite books. On shelves and table tops, they add warmth. I spent this year reading general fiction, and bios, but my passion is sci-fi & fantasy like DUNE and the Shire.

Be a docent for your collection. Collectors preserve, but docents are performers who share the passionate stories of the collection.

No pet should die in pain. We hovered 24/7 until it was finally time to take him for the Vet's final shot. The cancer left him thin, and weary, but not yet in major pain. He left us in peace.
