I've been getting back into tbhk lately and found your blog out of nowhere and wanted to say thank you for the great content. I've really been enjoying reading your posts !

So I wanted to ask, bc I saw you mention jp tbhk twitter, would you happen to have some twt acc recs/keywords for someone to search ? Since my hyperfixation seems to be back on tbhk/amatsuka, and I refuse to set a foot again in the cesspool pit that is the western fandom..... /shudders

from there, you can look at anyone's likes or retweets and find more branching artists and commentators to follow :3 a lot of people quiet down between things like chapter or volume releases. You'll see them explode the moment stuff is happening!!

I'll also suggest some other things to liven up your life and suckle at outside of twitter, and I hope that's useful. There is honestly so, so much out there, I don't think anyone needs to bother with most western engagements... it's enough to follow a couple of ramblers and helpful translators, a fangirl or two, and leave it at that.

there's also always a 5ch thread that updates... sometimes greatly amuses me

bilibili meanwhile is a chinese website similar to youtube (you won't be able to 'signup' for it though, as it requires an ID... if you want to save anything, you should just make a bookmarks folder in your browser. you can ignore notifications from bilibili to sign up and resume videos, so don't be intimidated. to turn off scrolling comments, click the little television symbol under the video) and there's tons of wonderful stuff there, like people doing vocal imitations of the twins and covering songs, animations to songs, AMVs, MMDs... there are some unique tags for certain trends, suchas MMD usually being tagged with 【地缚少年花子君MMD】 BUT not all videos bother, so you're best to just click around relevant things and plug in various terms and see what you get!

nicovideo also exists and you can use the tag 地縛少年花子くんMMD if you like MMD! I love this HanaNene one for Picture Perfect...

as for terms, here are various in different languages (with apologies that I can't provide all for all languages ... but it's a start!)

a note about a kind of cultural difference; western fandom often has a much, much stricter divide between things like hananene and amatsuka, with fans of one rarely tolerating the other. It's not often the case over yonders; often everyone will celebrate hananene illustrations and cute moments, or laugh about tsunene kiss and joke about them dating, even if the artist only draws the twins. That is to say that certain types of people won't survive in this environment!!!!!

thank you for all your posts focusing on the weird romances of JSHK and what this manga tries to say about love…

Still, I’m curious. Why do you think there are so many… cynical takes about love from the eng fandom? I often see so many posts that pick and choose what is or isn’t “true love” in this manga. Picking and choosing what characters and pairings feel “true love” and which ones don’t (which are… any relationships that aren’t hananene and mitsukou, I guess)

It feels… strange? Sometimes I wonder if I’m reading this manga right, but I don’t think any important relationship was meant to lack “love”… thoughts?

Oh it's just a recent thing, it has nothing to do with JSHK specifically. It's also so recent that it feels like it started happening Yesterday, to me (tfw you are 30).... I'm sure it'll pass soon enough. If you want my honest take, I think a lot of people are less 'fans of the manga' as much as they are 'fans of the fandom'-- they're participating in, I dunno, discord servers and hashtags, cultivating AUs, running events, and not typically rereading the manga, so you get a game of telephone, and they focus on what they like, and they exchange catchphrases like "true love" etc. I try to not look at or think about it and completely leave it be, because it's functionally a different fandom. I think we're at an age of social media where this sort of splintering is happening… some people join fandoms because they like engaging with the media itself, want to discuss it, and other people join fandoms to engage socially with each other's ideas. The characters become their OCs more or less. Which is fine..... some people see all their friends inside a playhouse and as a result they go inside the playhouse, and they aren't really there to observe the furniture as much as talk inside of the house to other people. And my studying the architecture of the playhouse, not listening to them, me like, licking the granite, putting pebbles in a test tube, is it's own thing. I run into someone ELSE scraping off pebbles into a test tube and we go "OH!!! hiii!! what are your findings?" and we briefly confer and then we go back to our testing.....

In general though there's also a shift in the definition of "ship" and I think the definition of "love" is going through the same no true scotsman quibbling. I mean-- its like uhhhhh flag and sexuality terminology discussion lol-- everyone is getting real taxonomical about what means what right now. All it means is, "in my personal understanding of [thing], this doesn't fit in." Authorial intent doesn't matter, rather people just agree, "I also don't think love is like this. Love, cannot be like this. It's something else.", so.... it's not really important, this is just the way any terms work right now (extremely self-defined or community-defined). Everything is subjective and, people are pretty defensive about the boundaries of their own definitions. It's just as simple as "true love would never be scary or destructive-- if I say it can be, I'm saying something awful and that I don't believe in". That's just true, ergo that's the yardstick measuring things. Though, that said you shouldn't really take it at face value. Hmmm... how to say.....

I'll observe someone making AMVs about Amane/Tsukasa, using art from JP amatsu fanartists, engaging obsessively with their entire narrative…………. but doggedly say it's "not shipping". I've had to sus out that 'shipping' has a far narrower definition to a lot of recent fandom, but I have a real time hard wording what it does mean (I guess 'endorse'???). I'll see tons of people clearly obsessed with Amane/Tsukasa, but it's presented as more of a …… I don't know ….. solemn recognition of it's sordidness, or having a maudlin cry about them? A sort of uh, fandom procession, is what it's presented as. It looks like shipping same as ever though, and flipping through edits on YT and bilibili AmaTsu videos, you wouldn't really know which was which, they both will use loaded chitzy and sexual songs.... Which to me says this is a semantics issue. I think you're seeing the semantics issue at play.

people ….. will make all the AmaTsu AMVs to Aishite Aishite Aishite their heart wants…….. I mean they want to imagine Tsukasa crying out "love me, love me, love me! more and more!" to Amane ………………………………………… I think you just have to not believe people when they say something "isn't love" and understand the conversations they are having don't have anything to do with analysis of the manga, it has to do with signaling to their peers something or other, and the message isn't really, like …………how to say ......…….. it doesn't mean anything , how to say…… it's just a kind of catchphrase? And that's that... it's like, social fodder.

Anyway I think AidaIro have a really UNCONDITIONAL definition of love, it's really the Point that Sakura could aim to destroy the world (and Natsuhiko would still love her), Tsukasa could hurt Amane and Amane could kill Tsukasa (and they would still love each other), Hanako could kill Aoi (and Nene would still love him), Hakubo could leave Sumire to suffer for 100 years (and she would still love him), Aoi could stab Akane (and he would still love her). So it's like funny people with the world's most conditional definitions of love are like, here, but I think they were here for toilet shenanigans, and in their chats they are like, still having the toilet shenanigans. Or they're making AmaTsu AMVs with the demeanor of someone carving an epitaph but the song is like Toxic by Britney Spears FKLSD;FJfdgdjSKDL;GSDJjhfhGKL like literally they're going through a real crisis out there ok, we need to just not observe them and let them do their own thing, you and I cannot grasp the nuance of the hieroglyphs and chanting they are doing from afar, we shouldn't try.
