Another slow month over here - it's been frustrating, because I have a lot of books I want to read but I don't actually ever want to sit down and read. I did wrangle my brain into cooperating long enough to read 8 books, my favorite of which was my re-read of Paladin's Hope (so excited for Paladin's Faith!!!!) and my least favorite of which was Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow (a very unpopular opinion, I know).

Module 9: The Ins and Outs of Latina/o Popular Culture

Coming out for an individual can be one of the most challenging things someone can do, especially for individuals of color and cultures that may not fully accept this due to tradition. Adding another minoritized identity can follow with many different struggles where one can feel isolated and not accepted by society or even their culture because they do not follow traditional norms. With this, the chapter is highlighting the fact that not all cultures have sexual identities that are accepted or have a way for an individual to open up about their sexuality, meaning in most cultures individuals have to hide their true identity from the world. Where a saying like, “coming out of the closet,” in a way sets the individual free from social restrictions, and since this phrase was constructed within the U.S. other cultures and countries may reject this concept. 

The chapter then introduces the term joteria which connects to the perspective on intersectional issues and concerns of queer Chicana/o, Latina/o, and indigenous people experience. Joteria is used instead of the terms queer or LGBTQ within the Association of Joteria Arts and Activism Scholarship because it provides the politics of representation for queer Latinx in the arts, media and activism and also these terms centralize all individuals’ experiences when Joteria is a separate category. Continuing, the chapter focuses on the fact that there is an underrepresentation of Latinx joteria within the media, entertainment news, and in U.S. popular culture. With this, the author discusses important joteria figures that have come out, that are members within the joteria community or influences in music and films. For instance; Chavela Vargus whom was one of the earliest representations of lesbian desire in music breaking Mexicano traditon, Juan Gabriel believed it was not prevalent to come out but his queer representations encouraged Mexican popular culture, Ricky Martin wrote songs that had empowering messages towards queer life while being a symbol of Latinx gay masculinity, and then Adelina Anthony was a performance artist’s that identified as a two-spirited Xicana lesbian multi-genre artist, cultural activist, teaching artists, director and producer whom addressed many social issues within her work. Lastly, significant joteria influences in music included A Corrido by Los Tigres del Norte and songs by Girl in a Coma while influential films are Mosquita y Mari and La Mission.

After reading this chapter, I found it the most interesting how the need to come out is not as prevalent in Mexico as it is in the U.S. where sexuality is highly personal within Latinx cultures, to the point where individuals keep their identities hidden from society. Even when there are Latinx characters on television whom are openly gay their representation is either ignored or excluded while openly gay White characters are praised and all the focus is on them. This is where I knew that Ellen DeGeneres was the most significant gay character who came out on television in 1997, but I was unaware that there was another character, Ricky Vasquez, a gay Latino character that was on television in the 1990s before Ellen. This was interesting to me because of how unaware I was that Ricky Vasquez played by Wilson Cruz was actually the first example of an openly gay Latinx individual on American television that highlighted the struggles of being gay. Which barely received the credit it deserves, while Ellen DeGeneres receives excessive amounts of attention when in fact there were many people before her to come out and support the LGBTQ community. I believe it is because she is White and possibly the culture difference where the Latinx community did not believe it was acceptable to give attention to any Latinx gay characters, including Ricky Vasquez.

I have never personally experienced the struggles queer individuals face, but I have a friend whom identifies as Latinx that expresses the discrimination and stereotypes they still have to experience almost daily. Luckily, she has tons of pride towards how she identifies, but shared with me the difficult time she had expressing this to her parents due to her parents beliefs and values. This connects to the chapter where some individuals do not have the same opportunities within their culture to easily be able to express themselves the way they want to.

What are reader and Rindou doing for valentines? (this is me trying to not be angry over the last chapter lol. also happy valentine’s day 🤍💓)

i'll tell you exactly! rindou would have taken reader to the bookstore and insisted on buying her books even as she insisted that she doesn't have the shelf space or the time and her physical tbr is too long.

and he'd buy her: moshi moshi by banana yoshimoto, reputations by juan gabriel vasquez, shipwrecks by by akira yoshimura, the vampire lestat by anne rice, and the end of the moment we had by toshiki okada

why those books? because i just went to the bookstore swearing i would only make a return and left having bought all those books, and really wish rindou had been there to spoil me (or hell even stop me!) because i have zero book self control.

more seriously, i don't think rindou is a big romantic planner, so they probably go to dinner, and rindou encourages you the whole time to ask for things so he can spoil you, and you have soft sex with maybe some food play (feeding each other chocolates, that kind of thing)

and you buy rindou a valentine, which bowls him over and he gets all blushy and quiet because he's never actually received one from a girl he liked lol

4. A poetry book that reads like a story

Ok this one is hard because I don't read very much poetry but I really loved Eavan Boland's A Woman Without A Country! A lot of Boland's poetry is about similar themes (like family, national identity, etc) so it all fits together really well!

I think I'm going to go with All the Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater! It's beautifully written, with a lot of symbolism and metaphor that makes the prose feel really poetic!

I have to pick Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell!! It made me cry so much and I just really appreciate tragedies.

I'm going to say The Sound of Things Falling by Juan Gabriel Vasquez! I read it for school, and when I originally read it I thought it was okay but by the time the discussion rolled around so many things had just clicked for it and it's just a super interesting look at trauma and grief!

Η γνωριμία μου με τον Colm Toibin ήταν ας πούμε ασυνήθιστη.

Ψάχνοντας να βρω δωρεάν βιβλία σε ηλεκτρονική μορφή έπεσα πάνω στο ηλεκτρονικό αναγνωστήριο της Εθνικής Βιβλιοθήκης. Εκεί οι αναγνώστες μπορούν να βρουν μια πληθώρα τίτλων από αρκετούς ελληνικούς εκδοτικούς οίκους, να τα κατεβάσουν στον υπολογιστή τους και μετά να τα διαβάσουν με κάποιο πρόγραμμα ανάγνωσης ebooks. Κάνοντας διάφορα πειράματα, προσπαθώντας να μετατρέψω τα αρχεία που κατέβαζα σε μορφή που να μπορεί να τα διαβάσει το Kindle μου, το οποίο μας άφησε πριν μερικές μέρες, κατέληξα ότι τα αρχεία των εκδόσεων Ίκαρος ανταποκρίνονταν καλά στη μετατροπή, και ξεκινώντας από κάποιους τίτλους που μου φάνηκαν ενδιαφέροντες, ο πρώτος ήταν το Ο ήχος των πραγμάτων όταν πέφτουν του Juan Gabriel Vasquez, διάβασα τελικά καμιά δεκαριά πριν το Kindle αποδημήσει εις Κύριον.

Το προτελευταίο ebook που διάβασα στο Kindle ήταν Η διαθήκη της Μαρίας του Colm Toibin, για το οποίο μιλήσαμε σε προηγούμενο σημείωμα.

Μια μέρα, γυρνώντας στο αυτοκίνητο μετά από μια βλάβη πέρασα έξω από ένα βιβλιοπωλείο στην Καρδίτσα. Με μια φευγαλέα ματιά που έριξα στα σταντ με τα βιβλία έξω από το βιβλιοπωλείο έπιασα ένα βιβλίο με ένα μαύρο εξώφυλλο, και τα χαρακτηριστικά γραφικά της σειράς Aldina των εκδόσεων Gutenberg. Ήταν το Καραβοφάναρο στο μαύρο νερό του Colm Toibin. Πλησίασα, το βιβλίο ήταν με έκπτωση σχεδόν 40%, το πήρα, και λίγα λεπτά αργότερα καθισμένος στο αυτοκίνητο και περιμένοντας τις επόμενες βλάβες, ξεκίνησα να το διαβάζω.

Η ιστορία εκτυλίσσεται στην Ιρλανδία, με τον ίδιο τρόπο που θα μπορούσε να εκτυλίσσεται παντού. Ακόμα και στη χώρα μας, ειδικά στην χώρα μας. Τρεις γυναίκες, που εκπροσωπούν τις τρεις γενιές μιας οικογένειας, η Ντόρα, γιαγιά και μητέρα, η Λίλι, κόρη και μητέρα και η Έλεν, εγγονή και κόρη, αλλά και μητέρα με δικά της παιδιά, αναγκάζονται μετά από χρόνια να συμβιώσουν για λίγες μέρες κάτω από την ίδια στέγη. Οι σχέσεις τους δεν είναι και οι καλύτερες, οπότε θα κληθούν να δουλέψουν σκληρά για να καταφέρουν να τα φέρουν βόλτα. Η αφορμή που θα τις ενώσει πρόσκαιρα είναι σημαντική, αλλά ίσως και εντελώς προσχηματική. Ο Ντέκλαν, αδερφός της Έλεν έχει AIDS. Πεθαίνει. Και θέλει να περάσει μερικές μέρες, τις τελευταίες του ίσως, μαζί με ό,τι του έχει απομείνει από την οικογένειά του. Στο σπίτι θα βρεθούν και δύο φίλοι του, ο Πολ και ο Λάρι, ομοφυλόφιλοι όπως και ο Ντέκλαν, και το κοκτέιλ θα είναι το λιγότερο εκρηκτικό.

Ο Toibin στήνει ένα δυσάρεστο σκηνικό.

Ένας νέος άνθρωπος που πεθαίνει από μια ανίατη, τότε, ασθένεια, τρεις γυναίκες ιδιαίτερες η καθεμιά με τον τρόπο της, δυναμικές, ισχυρογνώμονες, τρεις γυναίκες που ζούνε τις ζωές τους με τον δικό τους τρόπο, δύο άσχετοι με το οικογενειακό περιβάλλον άνθρωποι, αλλά πιο κοντά στον ασθενή από την ίδια του την οικογένεια, όλοι αυτοί κλεισμένοι σε ένα σπίτι σε κάποιο ψαροχώρι της Ιρλανδίας για μια βδομάδα, να έχουν να διαχειριστούν την ασθένεια και την νομοτέλειά της, αλλά και τις μεταξύ τους σχέσεις, τις ιδεοληψίες και τους εγωισμούς τους, τα δικά τους προσωπικά τυφλά σημεία στις σχέσεις τους με τους άλλους, αλλά και να υπερασπιστούν τα δικά τους θέλω και τις δικές τους ανάγκες.

Υπάρχει κάτι δεδομένο σε κάθε εποχή και σε κάθε τόπο όσον αφορά τη δημιουργία οικογένειας. Όταν γίνεσαι γονιός δεν ξέρεις τίποτα για τη γονεϊκότητα. Και αν τα πρακτικά ζητήματα λίγο πολύ μπορείς να τα μάθεις και να τα διεκπεραιώνεις, με τα υπόλοιπα τι γίνεται? Πως μεγαλώνεις ένα παιδί? Πως του μιλάς? Πως του συμπεριφέρεσαι? Πως συμπεριφέρεσαι γύρω από το παιδί, με τον ή την σύντροφό σου, με τους άλλους, πως μιλάς, πως κινείσαι? Πως διαχειρίζεσαι όλες τις αλλαγές της καθημερινότητας, τις αλλαγές που συμβαίνουν σε σένα τον ίδιο? Πως διαχειρίζεσαι θέματα όπως ο θάνατος? Ο θάνατος ενός γονιού? Υπάρχει σωστό και λάθος, και πόσο λεπτή είναι πολλές φορές η γραμμή που τα χωρίζει? Υπάρχει επιστροφή αν κάπου, σε κάποια στροφή πάρεις τον λάθος δρόμο? Και με τι κόστος?

Τι κόστος έχει μια συγγνώμη?

Και μπορεί άραγε να κολλήσει κάτι που έχει σπάσει?

Και στην τελική, χρειάζεται ό,τι έχει σπάσει, να κολλήσει?

Ο Toibin δεν δίνει απαραίτητα απαντήσεις σε όλα αυτά τα ερωτήματα, για την ακρίβεια αφήνει μια ομίχλη ερωτημάτων και αναζητήσεων να κατακάτσει πάνω στο σπίτι όπου κλείνονται όλοι αυτοί οι άνθρωποι, και σαν παιχνιδιάρης θεός τους χαζεύει πίνοντας ουίσκι να κουτουλάνε ο ένας πάνω στον άλλο, σαν τα συγκρουόμενα στο λούνα παρκ, προστατευμένοι ο καθένας από τη δικιά του φούσκα ασφαλείας. Αλλά για να έρθεις σε επαφή με τους άλλους πρέπει να σπάσεις αυτή τη φούσκα, πρέπει να συγκρουστείς και να πονέσεις, και να κλάψεις, και να θυμώσεις, για να μπορέσεις να φτάσεις κοντά στον άλλο. Δεν γίνεται αλλιώς. Ο Toibin το ξέρει. Δεν δίνει όμως διαστάσεις μελοδραματισμού στην ιστορία του. Αποσυμπιέζει τις σκηνές όπου όλα μοιάζουν έτοιμα να εκραγούν. Αφήνει χώρο στους ήρωές του να κάνουν τις ενδοσκοπήσεις τους, τους δίνει χρόνο να χωνέψουν τις νέες συνθήκες. Ναι, όλο αυτό που ζούμε είναι τραγικό, αλλά δεν μπορούμε να κάνουμε κάτι για να σώσουμε τον Ντέκλαν, δεν είμαστε θεοί, είμαστε άνθρωποι, μπορούμε να τον παρηγορήσουμε, μπορούμε να τον κάνουμε να αισθανθεί άνετα, μπορούμε να σταματήσουμε να μισούμε σαν να ήταν να ζήσουμε για πάντα, το πάντα των ανθρώπων είναι εφήμερο, και δεν έχει νόημα να είμαστε συνέχεια θυμωμένοι.

Το τέλος του βιβλίου βρίσκει τους πάντες μετέωρους. Το τέλος του βιβλίου, γιατί η ιστορία δεν τελειώνει με το βιβλίο. Αν ήταν ταινία, θα περιμέναμε ένα σίκουελ, όπου θα μαθαίναμε τι γίνεται με τους ήρωες λίγα χρόνια αργότερα. Αλλά δεν είναι ταινία. Και η ζωή δεν χωρίζεται σε κομμάτια, έχει μια συνέχεια. Το βιβλίο τελειώνει, η ιστορία όμως όχι. Και το ότι οι ήρωες του Toibin είναι από χαρτί και μελάνι δεν τους κάνει λιγότερο αληθινούς, και τη ζωή τους λιγότερο σημαντική.

Το βιβλίο τελειώνει. Και αν οι ήρωες μένουν μετέωροι, τι γίνεται με τον αναγνώστη? Που έχει χωθεί και αυτός για 330 σελίδες μέσα στην ίδια ομίχλη? Βγαίνει αλώβητος? Αλλαγμένος? Ανακουφισμένος? Πιο σκεπτικός? Πιο ώριμος? Πιο ανάλαφρος?

Η οικογένεια μπορεί να είναι η μεγαλύτερη ευλογία για έναν άνθρωπο, αλλά και η μεγαλύτερη κατάρα. Η χωρίς όρια αγάπη των γονιών, κυρίως της μάνας, μπορεί να αποβεί μοιραία για τον ψυχισμό κάποιου παιδιού. Οι περισσότεροι γονείς προσπαθούν καθημερινά να προσφέρουν το καλύτερο που μπορούν στα παιδιά τους. Κάποιες φορές δεν φτάνει, κάποιες φορές είναι παραπάνω από όσο πρέπει. Δεν υπάρχει λάθος και σωστό, υπάρχει μια αίσθηση λάθους και σωστού που έχουμε όλοι στο κεφάλι μας, και η οποία δημιουργείται από τα προσωπικά μας βιώματα, από τις επιρροές της κοινωνίας στην οποία ζούμε, από τα βιβλία που έχουμε διαβάσει, τις ταινίες που έχουμε δει, τα ταξίδια που έχουμε κάνει, τους ανθρώπους που έχουμε γνωρίσει. Κάτι που για μένα είναι καλό, για τον διπλανό, για τον ίδιο μου τον αδερφό που μεγαλώσαμε μαζί, μπορεί να μην είναι. Κάτι που θεωρώ καλό για την μεγάλη μου κόρη να μην είναι για την μικρή.

Και μέσα σε όλη αυτή την μάχη που δίνουμε μεγαλώνοντας, με τους γονείς μας πρώτα και μετά με τα παιδιά μας, έρχεται και η οικογένεια που φτιάχνουμε μόνοι μας, οι φίλοι μας, που τους διαλέγουμε και μας διαλέγουν, και που τις σχέσεις μας τις ατσαλώνει ο χρόνος χωρίς καμία υποχρέωση αίματος να είμαστε πάντα δίπλα τους, ή να είναι πάντα δίπλα μας.

Ίσως τελικά ένα από τα σημαντικότερα εφόδια που θα έπρεπε να δίνουμε στα παιδιά μας, είναι να τα μαθαίνουμε πώς να κάνουν καλούς φίλους, και πώς να ξεφορτώνονται την οικογένεια όταν τους γίνεται βάρος.

Αν και δεν είμαι σίγουρος ότι μαθαίνεται ούτε το ένα, ούτε το άλλο.
