It was the first book that I read by Juliet Marillier and I really liked her writing style. It is a reimagining of the Six Swans myth and it is very well done. We follow Sorcha , a seventh child, as she tries to complete her quest and defeat the curse that was laid upon them. The book is a little slow paced at the beginning but then it picks up. I loved the world building and the descriptions as well as the characters. Sorcha is a great female character. Mas ele não era aberto aos humanos, a não ser aos sortudos o bastante para descobrir um portal e a maneira de abrí-lo. O povo que vivia lá seguia leis que não eram como as nossas. Qualquer velho com histórias para contar sabia disso. Havia lendas sobre homens que atravessaram um portal, ficaram uma noite com o povo da floresta e, ao voltar, descobriram que cem anos haviam se passado, e que suas mulheres e filhos estavam mortos e enterrados. Havia histórias sobre gente que visitara a festa das fadas e enlouquecera. Quando voltavam ao mundo dos homens, eles só conseguiam vagar pela floresta até morrer de frio, fome ou sede. Havia ainda histórias de pessoas que entraram na floresta e simplesmente desapareceram.

A few close-ups from my latest painting, the Tale of the Swan Brothers! This one was inspired by the need to do something different with color (you know I love my saturated golds a little to much). This idea from my sketchbook turned out to be a good fit for a much more subtle color palette, and I love how it turned out. It was very satisfying to paint the clean white feathers of the swans that just about glow.

I entered a contest to win a signed copy of one of my favorite books. The task I chose was to design yourself as a warrior from the story.

I chose a fox as the animal to represent me. A while ago I read the Fox version of the Love graphic novels. I related to that tremendously and the more I think about it, the more it seems like that is why I chose that particular animal for this.

It was great to work on because I don't feel strong or warrior-like at all and to try to draw myself that way was interesting . . . in the feelings that it brought out in me.

Anyway! I did manage to win a copy of the book and it arrived today. :)
