Leandro knows he's getting old, but he's not ready to retire. To hang up his guitar and live a quite life somewhere, where no one stops him for a photo in the airport.

It's harder, these days, to keep up with the band on stage. Or stay out propping up the bar after a show. He's not as thin as he once was, and he's already going grey; his niece just started college. And maybe that's why, every year, the concert halls get smaller. The royalty checks he gets through his agent are fewer and farther between.

But he's still got something to say left. Words and chords and endless nights spent writing. And the escape, the screaming of the crowd, it's still a place where he can lose himself, for maybe an hour or three, completely exposed below the lights, between the static from the amps around him.

He isn't anyone then: a voice, two calloused hands. He's not his mother's disappointment, a lesser shadow of his older brother. He's not two boxes full of books away from being left.

But all those things, that sad reality of him, he gets a brief respite when he's on tour. It helps him more than therapy. It helps him more than sex or drinking did.

He knows that he can't keep it up too long. Leandro knows he's getting old. And he should maybe try for something stable.

It doesn't have to be tonight. The place is packed. His drummer's started counting out the beat.
