Parajes del Valle Monastrell Ecologico Jumilla, Spain 2022 Monastrell / Mourvédre

This is a fresh and floral style chilled red from the southeast Spain - a predominantly continental climate. Here it is sunny and arid with more than 300 days of sunshine per year and very limited rainfall. With very hot summers and very cold winters, these conditions are optimal for Monastrell - high alcohol, ripe jammy fruits, rich flavours and textbook spice.

Hand harvested and aged for 8 months in concrete, this chilled red has piercing clean acidity and young grippy tannins.

Whilst the winery may be young, established in 2018, the winemakers’ views are anything but. They work closely with local farmers to preserve the existing farming cooperative. They entrust the farmers with old vines 15-40 years old of Monastrell across four different plots hence the name - Parajes del Valle.

Monastrell / Mourvèdre Predominantly grown in Spain, it is a superb value grape that does not require ageing. Characterised by high tannins, high alcohol, high acidity and being very fruit forward. Dominant flavours are blackberry, black pepper, cocoa, sweet tobacco and roasted meats.

Pairing: roasted/grilled beef and lamb, pasta, hard and blue cheese

Here’s a fun little example: Deep ruddy garnet in the glass–WAY more ambered and tempered with age in the nose than the vintage would suggest–and that’s probably a flaw, but hey. I have wandered extensively in several great European cities, and I appreciated everything that deserved it. The catalogue on this subject could be vast. There were the beers of England, where mild and bitter were mixed in pints; the big schooners of Munich; and the Irish; and the most classical, the Czech beer of Pilsen; and the admirable baroquism of the Gueuze around Brussels, when it had its distinct flavour in each artisanal brasserie and did not travel well. There were the fruit liqueurs of Alsace; the rum of Jamaica; the punches, the aquavit of Aalborg, and the grappa of Turin, cognac, cocktails; the incomparable mezcal of Mexico. There were all the wines of France, the loveliest coming from Burgundy; there were the wines of Italy, and especially the Barolos of Langhe, the Chiantis of Tuscany; there were the wines of Spain, the Riojas of Old Castille or the Jumilla of Murcia.

Interesting piece due to its richness in prismatic hexagonal fluorapatite crystals grouped and dispersed on a matrix, with colors between yellow and green, bright, transparent, prismatic, faceted and well formed from the area of ​​the La Celia mine. Going big with this big boy wine from Jumilla, Spain. Plum, dark cherry compote, cedar, mixed raspberry and blueberry jam, and a hint of ash on the nose. Dark cherry jam, plums, sugarplums, cinnamon, and chocolate raspberry cordial on the palate. Very soft on the palate - almost Merlot-like.

Located in southeastern Spain, the Jumilla DO was known as early as Roman times for its full-bodied reds, but producers have started to make more noise about the small quantity of Monastrell-based pink wines coming out of the continental, coastal-influenced region.

While rosé just makes up a small fraction of the wines made in Jumilla (92% of the region’s output is red), winemakers are looking at their Monastrell grapes differently and making more space for rosé production.

The results are already promising. Six wines entered into our Global Rosé Masters this year won medals.
