Noé + Vanitas + 2nd Noé
Tumblr media
Hello there. Today I bring you a kick coloring from the last drawing Jun shared on Twitter about the stage-play (it has two actors for Noé since the 1st one got covid last year. He is okay now).
Do you remember last year when I told you that I should keep this place updated and post at the same time that in Twitter because I had some things unshared back then? Well, now the tables have been turned. And now you know all the things I made meanwhile I have in Twitter like 5 art to post... I'm a disaster.
Anyways, I hope you like this one since I really enjoyed doing it. I'm not used to coloring tbh, I prefer to take tiny things as chibis to color them, but with this one I felt charmed and I couldn't help but painting it. Don't get used, or yes...

Mochijun just released some incredible new Vanoe art! If I deciphered Google Translate correctly, it’ll be a perk for audience members who purchase premier seats for the upcoming revival of the VnC stage play. According to sensei, Vanitas’s blue anemone means “firm oath,” “I will believe in you,” and “long-awaited” in flower language, while Noé’s Hardenbergia signifies “miraculous reunion” and “happiness comes in.” Again, however, this is just me going off Google Translate, so please let me know if I’ve misinterpreted anything here!

New interview with MochiJun regarding the VNC stage play (messily translated into English via Google Translate):

Mochijun is amazing and I feel like ppl don’t understand how much she’s worked. PH began in 2006, had long chapters a minimum of 40 pages. I wasn’t there for the run but to release 104 chapters in 9 years you can assume there were almost no breaks. If you’ve read Brocante which is a sketchbook that comes with special edition of vol 11 (I strongly recommend getting it if you can). You would know she’s been planning VnC from 2009-2015. So essentially for 6 out of those 9 years of PH’s run mochijun was working on two manga at the same time. That’s crazy.
And mind you, she didn’t take that long of a break after PH. It ended in March of 2015 I believe and then she had to compose the PH final artbook soon after. And vnc started in December. And went on with few breaks until a few years ago. Then you include supervising the 2009 ph anime and VnC’s anime when they came out. Then include the ph and vnc collab, the ph 15th anniversary cafe, the now mochijun 20th anniversary online lottery. Then you include interviews, signings, covers of GJ magazines. She worked on a shoujo rei MV. She makes all the additional items that come with volumes. I think she released 3 light novels for PH (though idk if she wrote them or overlooked its creation by another writer). There’s likely stuff I forgot depending on her role in stage plays. Or art she did in miscellaneous magazines or art she did for other creators. Or much more I just don’t know about. Jun Mochizuki is not a company or a small studio. She has assistants thank god but most of this will fall on one woman.
I know it’s sad we haven’t gotten vnc since April but firstly, we got a lot of shit in April. So the hiatus is sad but I’m not surprised. And honestly when I found out she worked on ph and vnc around the same time, I was so shocked she hadn’t broken down for that long. On a final note, both PH and VnC are not simple manga with straight-forward plots. They have so much planning and detail and foreshadowing placed into them. She gave us two complex manga basically back to back.

For the art asks - 2 and 14?
hi anon !!
2. Is it easier to draw someone facing left or right (or forward even)
characters facing left for sure (I'm right handed). but because of this I think I do try a lot harder at right-facing faces, and most of the time those may end up looking nicer! haha
14. Any favorite motifs
I wish I drew more of my favourite visual motifs more, actually. so if you're surprised by the below I wouldn't blame you LOL because I feel like. I wish I drew from my heart more! I sometimes think my art is really boring if I can be brutally honest. gotta take more risks!
I like a lot of genres of media so understandably my art is all over. people have said this is a great quality, others have trouble pinpointing certain traits about my art, or my interests? and I wish that the things I love were more clear. honestly I feel more like the latter part of a "jack of all trades, master of none" but more like. a little court jester with my jingle hat. in 2023 I'd like to be happier with my art, and draw things that are more interesting/emotional/personal to me! 🏃‍♀️💨
- I love gothic/victorian motifs a lot! overly ornate frames (like haunted portraits), mirrors, flowers, complex drapery, and yes, we can't talk about gothic without the macabre stuff that was present in victorian culture too. sorry for being an edgy 2000s kid but I love skeletons in art... and characters sitting in coffins? chef kiss. Just like. the precarious balance of life and death in art is so genuinely interesting. I once saw in a Waldemar Januszczak art history doc that artists are so unapologetically obsessed with this dark stuff hahaha... 🤧👍 media that come to mind are Ib, Pandora Hearts, Black Butler. non anime media like Dracula, Portrait of Dorian Gray, Sherlock Holmes.
- Theatre/Shakespearean motifs as well. curtains, wooden props, stage sets. Opera, classical Greek theatre, ballet, pantomime, the circus. Shakespearean in the way that the characters are very passionate yet oh so tragic. Like. just in general playing on the idea that stories are plays, and the characters are mere puppets in someone's fabrication. thus things like puppets and clown-type characters in plays are fascinating too. things like, characters as the automatons in automaton clocks are so cool. I also LOVE the concept of dolls, however dolls are? quite frankly? terrifying irl. inspirations: Princess Tutu, lots of tragic stage play themes also present in Jun Mochizuki's work in Pandora Hearts and Vanitas no Carte, Rozen Maiden for the dolls thing.
- storybook themes. European fairy tale illustrations, anything whimsical and old fashioned. Witch Hat Atelier comes to mind, Princess Tutu again, also The Girl from the Other Side.

Appearance & Personality:
Imaginary:
Mitsu has black hair that comes down to her shoulders and has brown eyes. She also has a nice little beauty spot, like her mother, at the corner of her eye
Attire:
Normally when Mitsu is not working; her attire is usually a little dark and screams out “moody teenager” (much to her father’s concern — for both his daughter and his hard-earned reputation)
As a hostess:
Mitsu wears a muse maxi dress with a split down both sides (so she can still defend herself if needed without being restricted by her outfit)
Tumblr media
Standard outfit:
• Similar to her father, Mitsu, wears casual clothing if not a little more edgier and “punk rock” with a black shirt, plaid shirt with fishnet stockings, doc marten boots, and of course, a leather black jacket to go with it
• She wears a hair pin so she can use it to pick locks (🤭) , at her own convenience, when breaking into places she’s not supposed to be in — rather than use it for her appearance.
• She also wears leather black gloves to avoid getting caught by the police (or her father) when committing crimes and would often wear a mask to hide her ID
Tumblr media
Distinguishing marks:
🟣 = Tattoos
🟢 = Significance
<> Koi Fishes (2) swimming both sides of her stomach
• Reference to Koi Bride ; her go-to gambling place
(She also has a leaves/reefs to cover her lower stomach area which looks like the fishes are in a pond of sorts)
<> Cherry Tree branch going up her arm/shoulder with open cherry blossoms 🌸
(Since her middle name was “Sakura” before she changed it to “Ryuko” due to her antihero alias)
<> Dragon going down her arm ~ hence her middle name being Ryuko which means “Dragon Child”)
(Henceforth her alternative name being ‘The Dragon’)
How would you describe Mitsu’s personality?
• Interrogative (subconsciously)
• Vulgar
• Cunning
• Realistic (determinant)
• Feisty
• Family oriented (?)
• Dry humour
<> Like father like daughter 🤣
• Seductive
• Defiant
• Authoritative
• Smug
• Manipulative
• Clumsy
• Maternal (selectively)
• Jealous
• Hostile
Relationships:
Yagami:
Standard:
Due to Mitsu's enjoyment of (ironic) criminal activity, she and her father tend to butt heads a LOT which would often leave them at an impasse, frequently.
Because of the strained relationship Yagami often would wonder where he had gone wrong with his parenting and how Mitsu could have preferred delinquency over being a law-abider (especially when one’s father is a detective 😂)
Occupation:
What deteriorates Mitsu and Yagami’s relationship even further is choice of career and had, unintentionally, tried to coax her doing something else as a hostess (of all things) and implied she could put away criminals instead of becoming one.
She would often feel inferior to her father especially when it comes to occupation and always hates when he woyld “coax” her into becoming a criminal lawyer when announced she had no interest of being any kind of law enforcer because she enjoys being a lawbreaker
Hobbies:
Whilst Yagami passionately disapproves of Mitsu’s decision to play a part in criminal activities — he is still somewhat more pleased that she’s doing normal things a kid should be doing; like skateboarding or participating with robotics club
However his disapproval escalates dramatically after finding out that Mitsu had become the leader of biker gang and started a faction called “Swiftback Drifters” — technically undoing his hard work of disbanding death races
Fighting:
Unlike Yagami Mitsu tends to deliberately get into fights for the sake of fighting and would often be the one to start it on purpose and would always let her emotions get the best of her (even so far as to kill someone) to prove to people how “strong” she is
She’d even go as far as to doing cage fights to earn extra cash and would often fight dirty to make it happen which often lead a argument between both father and daughter about what was ethical etc
Kaito:
Mitsu considers Kaito as her "uncle"; and would always look up to him — more than her actual father, if she had something to say about it (but then again that’s because they were opposites sides of the law and not in a prosecutor way 😂)
Despite the tension between father and daughter; Kaito also points out the positive traits of Mitsu and how she's more like Yagami than she actually thinks (both in choice of attire and mannerisms)
And that, of course, her father, as a detective, would be against anything lawless and that it would make sense why they would be at impasse a lot, which would often make her pissed off — before giving Kaito the silent treatment (for like a day or two)
AU:
Jun:
Jun is the closest thing to a "cousin", to Mitsu despite there being 15 years between them — putting him at 30 y/o —. He can both protect her and give her very good advice and never fails to support her specifically when she trashes her father behind his back (so pretty similar to Kaito or at least tries to be 😂)
Amasawa:
Mitsu deeply resents Amasawa — as any sister would — and would often make snarky comments like how she was technically the daughter Yagami would have had because of their common interest in mystery and detective work
However Mitsu would either be ignored or is acknowledged — bluntly — by Ansawa and that the former would have been the “ideal daughter” if she wasn’t into criminal activity and that she should have known better — what with being a daughter of a detective and a law-abider (etc)
Kozakura (OC):
Despite Mitsu’s hostile relationship with Kozakura (most of the time and if there’s an audience) outside of that; she does seem to have a soft spot for her younger sister and isn’t afraid to “teach” her tormentors a lesson and offers to teach her some self defence skills.

vnc volume 10 cover analysis!!
Tumblr media
i havent done theories in a bit so apologies if this is chaotic 🚶‍♀️
AHAKHSKSD THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THE COVER i think its honestly really perfect for this particular volume!!
OK so starting off with the colour scheme, its the classic blue/purple of vanoé (if you look at volume 1 and volume 2's cover arts, it clearly shows what their colour schemes are!) and in volume 10, they blend so beautifully. You can see on Noé's white sweater how clearly both blue and purple are visible, similarly on Vanitas! It shows not just for aesthetic purposes but also literally how both of them have progressed a little further, understand each other a little better, and are slowly, slowly on the route to mutual understanding. (This isn't present in previous Vanoé volume covers, such as this)
Second, the bubbles. They can mean two things; alone, the bubbles can symbolize hopes and dreams that will eventually burst when the bubbles reach the surface, or perhaps even Vanitas's 'wrong perception' of Noé as 'that vampire' which led to their fight in the first place; it was short-lived and wrong. Bubbles are pockets of air; but depending on whether you are the giver or the receiver, its life or death.
Alternatively, it could symbolize water. Light refracts in water, showing a distorted view of reality - you can't hear, breathe or feel anything underwater, much like Vanitas throughout the fight, where he was oblivious to Noé's screams and also of himself. It can tie back to Noé seeing his 'true' reflection in the mirror (as water never shows a clear reflection of yourself) and understanding that he had been equally blind and breaking the surface of the water to understand what Vanitas looked like as well. HWHSDHDS :"""
Lastly, the hourglass in the background. It shows that a sizeable amount of time has passed, maybe an inclination to how much the manga is completed, how many mémoires remain, and also of the time that vanitas and noé have left together. In many ways, volume 10 was a false bait; it shows how they both clearly tried to kill one another as alluded in the beginning, but the events didn't actually come to pass. Maybe its a hint that time-altering/time-travel is a part of vnc, who knows 👀
i hope you enjoyed this analysis! please feel free to send in any further questions as asks, i enjoyed writing this <3
lol i have a math exam tomorrow wish me luck *cries*

Funny how ANTIS keep saying about the vanoè hug official art..
"That's from the stage play though.."
Dude so what? Vanitas and Noè's actors hugged and Mochijun drew them. That's Vanitas and Noè's actors so basically, that's still Vanitas and Noè. Even Mochijun is so happy to see them hug.
Some also says, "That will never happen in the manga",
Well maybe it's not similar to the art above, but there's still hug that happened between them.
It is officially stated in the manga by Vanitas himself that Noè hugs him when they are sleeping and uses him as a pillow.
You remember that? When he's talking to Amelia?
And also, remember when Noè hugged Vanitas to protect him from the falling ferris wheel? That's from the latest chapters.
-----------------------
Also LISTEN, this is very important guys‼️
No matter how mad you are, please, JUST PLEASE, DO NOT TALK BAD/ATTACK OR WORSE CURSE AT JUN MOCHIZUKI or any author of a story. JUST DON'T. That is so embarrassing, so stupid and really immature!
This happened 3 days ago? When Mochizuki drew the hug scene of Vanitas and Noè's actors. They retweeted the art and said this. Again, I will not cover the name and username so they can atleast feel embarrassment if they had any. I don't know if you already saw this issue on twitter but I decided to post this here for awareness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just don't ever do this alright? None of authors deserve this kind of treatment. Have shame.
