Eurovision Fact #619:
Tumblr media
Poland has never won the Eurovision Song Contest, but it has won many of the spin-off competitions. In 2016, they won Eurovision Young Musicians and Eurovision Young Dancers. Poland also won Eurovision Young Dancers the following year. Finally, in 2018 and 2019, Poland won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.

"Anyone I want to be" and "Chained to the rhythm"
Two more singles into the #FearOfMu21c project, crowdsourcing the greatest singles of the 21st century. Here’s an index post.
With all of the holdovers from #Uncool50 accounted for, these final 13 days are all new, and all brilliant.
Anyone I want to be - Roxie Węgiel
An absolute masterpiece of a song, and would have received the 7th bonus point if I wasn't limited to five.
Roxie Węgiel - billed as "Roksana Węgiel" on this release - was born in January 2005, and was a promising judoka. The history says she took up singing while doing karaoke at a judo camp. By 2018, she'd won The Voice of Holland of Poland Kids, and was picked for the European competition.
Tumblr media
"Anyone I want to be" gets going with a throbbing chord, a solo vocal in English that turns into Polish for the pre-chorus. Visually, it's perfection - black-and-white video, fast and precise cuts, camera angles that are just right. We're hooked with the loping beat and fists-in-the-air moment, a little thrill of the chorus.
Backing dancers are a perpetual motion machine, Roxie cuts through them like a hot knife moving through superheated cocoa. The second verse is entirely in Polish, the second pre-chorus and chorus is entirely in Polish, but we know what she's singing.
Just when we were getting to grips with the song, there's a remarkable costume reveal. The dancers pull ribbons out from the back of Roxie's dress, made to move her like she was a marionette. Then the ribbons detach, and she is free. Even to the viewer who speaks no Polish, this is a clear explanation of the song's message.
Tumblr media
And we're back into English for the last chorus. But no! The last chorus chops off half-way through! Darn you! Our expectation is denied, the moment of catharsis we want and expect is not going to happen! The only way to get resolution is to play the song again, in the winner's reprise.
Almost inevitably, the winner of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018. Would surely have given "Toy" and "Fuego" a run in the senior contest. Why did this song win? It's a stunningly good song, polished and buffed through the adult pop market. Iggy Azalea turned it down. Rita Ora turned it down. Their loss.
The basic song was written by Maegan Cottone, Nathan Duvall from Disciples, Cutfather, Peter Wallevik, and Daniel Davidsen; additional lyric in Polish by Małgorzata Uściłowska and Patryk Kumór. It takes seven lyricists to get pop perfection.
Tumblr media
TVP, the broadcaster in Poland, followed the same formula to the letter in 2019's contest, and again won; they've been eclipsed by joyful noises from France Télévisions in recent years. Roxie's released a second album, 13+5, this year.
youtube
Chained to the rhythm - Katy Perry ft Skip Marley
In 2010, Katy Perry made the "Teenage Dream" album. It captured the hope and cautious optimism of the era, and - with a little download discounting - tied "Bad"'s mark of five Billboard number one singles. "Firework" is a golden retriever hit, big and loyal and stupid; "ET" is the most bizarre Billboard number one, being a tale about screwing an alien. Both were seriously considered for this list.
Tumblr media
Instead, I pick a song from seven years later, when cautious optimism had been crushed by tiny tiny hands. Chiding her audience for being "happily numb" and "tone deaf", Katy warns of what happens when we "dance to the distortion". There's a woozy Caribbean beat, and a rap from Skip Marley - one of Bob's grandsons.
It was co-written by Katy, Skip, Sia, and producer Max Martin - and it's really well crafted. Note how the emphasis is in the wrong places, "chained TO the rhyTHM", we subliminally pick up that something's wrong.
Tumblr media
It's a political song, with plausible deniability - it's an artistic turn of phrase, not the people here she's singing about. Honest. Lest we forget, Katy started out singing Christian pop songs. She knows the tricks used by evangelicals and the religious lot, and uses those tricks against enemies of humanity.
The album "Witness" came and went in summer 2017, and I'd completely forgotten about 2020's "Smile".

i am obsessed with ralf mackenbach as a concept
Tumblr media
like. he won junior eurovision when he was 14 or some shit. continued in that industry for a bit. and then in 2019 he got a master's in nuclear fusion.
in an utterly parasocial way, this man is my inspiration and i wish nothing but the best for him
also, as of 2018, he could still tap, which i majorly respect.

My thoughts about the JESC 2022 songs. Part 4:
(This will be in order of release of...YKW, screw this intro, you already know the drill. And also sorry for the delay, had some things to do)
🇦🇲 Nare "DANCE!":
"Qami Qami" from Maléna was something mystical and ethereal beyond anything heard and seen during the Junior Eurovision 2021 at Paris, France. The voice was soothing and still catchy, with a mix of techno and pop vibes that made their way to our hearts, giving the song enough soul to get its very well-deserved victory at said contest.
And by rule, the host country can't just relax completely by just making the plans for the next year's event. They have to show their own potential in a good or better way than last years' song, and if possible, host the JESC twice in a row! (This is not a drill, it happened at 2019 and 2020 in Poland after Roksana Węgiel and Viki Gabor won the contest at 2018 and 2019 respectively)
So what's the best way for Armenia to show they can still be one of the strongest contestants in this year's JESC? Of course, raising the bar Malena left for the next singer. And they did it with Nare and her song "DANCE!":
Tumblr media
If you hear this song after listening "Qami Qami", you'll see the glow-up Armenia's quality made for their JESC songs: From a calm and ethereal song to a groovy and techno disco room hit that not only invites everyone to dance and enjoy the moment, but also tells everyone the host country is ready to give us an spectacular number at their own JESC edition, if not winning twice and giving Armenia their third victory!
I know it is virtually impossible for a host to win the contest in these recent Eurovision editions, but let's face it, Nare has the strength to make this idea true! Even if they get a Top 5 place (as my main guess for her despite my wishes for her winning JESC), it would show how incredible they made this song!
🇺🇦 Zlata Dziunka "Nezlamna (Unbreakable)":
Before I get to the final song of JESC, let me speak things clear:
I am aware of what is happening in Ukraine. I heard and sometimes still hear the news about the sorrowful and hard situation they got into at this year's beginning. And even if I would prefer to be neutral about it as I live at the other side of the world, I can't deny I feel sadness for them, and some wishes for this situation to end in a good way for them and the other countries regarding this trouble. Like, I know why people are a bit sceptical about certain countries regarding their decisions about this event, but let's be clear (and this also talking for the possible absence of some of the previous champions during the announced Champion Number at the JESC, and not those with understandable personal/situational decisions like Maria Isabel): Not everyone from those countries represents the decisions and ideals of their governments. Some of them want this to stop at once, and some of them are not related or interested to participate in this event. Peace is a wish not only for Ukraine, but also the entire world.
With this said...I knew and considered from the beginning Ukraine would choose sending us a JESC song related to this situation. And they didn't disappoint in a good way. Zlata Dziunka was the one chosen to represent the country at Yerevan with "Nezlama"
Tumblr media
And while the first version of the song revealed at the national finals was something "not enough" to shine among the other JESC entries, the final revamp made it get stronger, in message and melody: Alongside the fact you don't need to search too much for the music video's meaning if you are aware of the actual situation, the vocals singing the English-Ukrainian lyrics got both more majestic and poignant than the original entry. Add this the genuine feeling transmitted by Zlata and the more-than-just-clear meaning put on the lyrics, and this song gets you in the feelings even if just for a little.
While in my dearest opinion, I see this getting a Top 10 or 5 placement in the contest, I'm sorry, but I could be happy or at least enjoy it if "Nezlama" manages to get the victory of the contest, one that would be heartful.
//semi-venting
And yes, I know some people would not be so satisfied with this luck event and more after how they perceived Kalush Orchestra's "points landslide" victory at the adults' ESC. I know and I understand Chanel and Sam Ryder had more potential to be the winners and one of them would have gotten 1st place in a normal situation, but getting to the point of shunning Kalush and Ukraine itself for an "undeserved victory" is not the way to solve things. I would've been angry if I was in Spanish and British fans' shoes, of course, but we don't have to ever forget this: even if one country or other wins the contest, every or most artists are still LEGENDS even without the trophy! Sam Ryder is a recognized artist at the United Kingdom even at 2nd place. Chanel's musical career is on the go even at 3rd place. People still dance to Moldova's catchy train song and Give That Wolf a Banana even if they weren't in Top 3. Heck, even in Bolivia, Rosa Linn's "Snap" is a hit in every pseudo-mall and urban places around the cities, and she didn't need to 100% win the contest to make her song a hit! And I don't need to tell the situation with most ESC 2021 songs: They are still legends to remember and talk about during any ESC infodump or chatter, despite their final placement.
------------------------------------------------------------------
And with this final post, my Junior Eurovision 2022 song list personal opinions are finished. As I said, each one has its own potential and soul, and they can shine, some of them already becoming candidates for a victory! This is promising to be one of the most energetic JESC editions ever!
Best of luck for everyone!

Eurovision Fact #471:
Tumblr media
France's win at the 2023 Junior Eurovision Song Contest marks the second time in the contest's history that a nation has won twice in a row.
First, Poland won twice in a row in 2018 and 2019, and now France has won in 2022 and 2023.

Junior Eurovision 2018 - Last comments
Ukraine - Indila with a mini-revolutionarist anthem, braid tails and a megaphone. Reminds me of some act with megaphone from another JESC year.
Portugal - Dated even by 00s JESC standarts. Nice couch on stage. Will flop
Kazakhstan - Woah woah woah, pipe down with the hype there. She might be good and all that but she is likely to be Sergey Lazarev of JESC 2018 - Slavic song that should win... but likely comes 3rd or so. Will this mean Australia’s safe bland ballad will come 2nd and Ukraine wins???? :OOOO (technically Kazakhstan should win in this case because she’s of similar origins as Jamala but screw it, Daneliya will downplay her Jamalaness with her Sergey.)
Albania - Cheap dance pop that didn’t stop Cyprus from ending bottom 1 last JESC. Could be the unfortunate case for Efi too - poor girl... So she’s likely to downplay her Nettaness (she’s already doing just that without giving us crazy - she just goes for the “not a toy” simile, color pink and... being a female) with her Nicolenicolaou-ness.
Russia - JESC Australia levels of safe - in fact not even Australia would want that. Malta would. I’m here for Anna subdueing everyone’s expectations and actually coming top 10 - unlike Julia, which flopped in the semi of the ESC’s this year, and a flop was coming to her regardless. Not the case here. Kids and teens will fancy Russia because it’s that kind of teen drama music you can pay attention to, unlike Portugal.
Netherlands - Love ballad #1, but actually IS a friendlier-for-kids-sounding love ballad. Call it a “childhood/teenage crush ballad” - it will probably suit it better. The staging is eww. Invite Alekseev for a duet so I can enjoy me some of “togeeeetheeeeeer foreeeeeehvAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH”.
Azerbaijan - Inattentive. Impatient. A glaze look in the eyes. Nah just kidding. It’s actually the “harmless spring blossom song #1″, and unlike the song coming up on this, it’s more “payable-attention-to” if you try hard enough to do so. Reminds me of their JESC 2013 entry and also a bit of Lithuania JESC 2011. Will flop. Sorry delegation ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Belarus - Nah it grew on me. Boyband material. Teengirls will eat this up, as long as they’re watching, which I doubt. Will probably steal a place from a song that deserves to do better, but won’t because... well, Belarus...
Ireland - A dance song demo that got stuck in 2012, hence that random dubstep. Cringy dancing, at least in their NF. If I see awkward staging of this song live today, I will immediately write this off as a total failure. P.S.: Ireland JESC 2017 deserved better
Serbia - Another flop, especially with being drawn after another flop - flop out-cancellation! Messy structure, bit too many keychanges, school concert level - the makings of a flop are there, unfortunately.
Italy - Love ballad #2. It is probably the “Tu canción” of JESC 2018 because these two might play their childhood crushing to wow the audience at how are they “so in love with each other” but if no one fell for Almaia, no one will fall for Marcissa either. Hvala ne. Also it sounds too adult (and slightly old-fashioned?) for them, and Spain 2018 was better (despite horrible costume choices and awkward on-stage chemistry). They’re not Vincenzo, they can’t work their weaknesses into strenghts just like him...
Australia - Well at least I like this one, no matter how safe and too polished this sounds. As much as I do though, she got pretty good makings of Dami Im of JESC 2018, which would be a crime for this contest because it shouldn’t be ESC 2.0! I believe the winner should be something with at least some of the childhood attained. Which this song is not really. Also most of the 2nd placers as of recently are truly bad tbh. Go back to haunt the ESC waters, safe Australian ballads, pretty pls
Georgia - TFW you want to drum‘n’bass but you don’t have the FL Studio/Ableton/Garageband equipment, so you use studio drums. Is a good song, won’t flop
Israel - Too... sophisticated for Junior Eurovision. Kids won’t get this.
France - Your average everyday radio pop from the likes of Felix Jaehn and Western Europe in general. Might do well but I wouldn’t hold my breath on this one
Macedonia - Beautiful but lacks cohesion and straightforward editing. Could be “Moj dom” of JESC 2018 - a ballad from mediocre country in top 10? No way!
Armenia - Gives me Netherlands JESC 2017 teas - radiotic dance stuff that will probably go for the fourth. Please steal some of the internet televotes from Netherlands.
Wales - Harmless spring blossom song #2, and unlike Azerbaijan, this one sounds sweeter... but even more harmless. :L She does not have a better gun to wow the audiences with than the dancers, which sucks because Lithuania 2018 is another song that relies on sounding sweet af, but the package somehow included someone close to her... maybe Manw should have been surrounded by her close friends as the dancers?? Or maybe they should’ve learned some staging lessons from Ryan O’Shaughnessy, who turned his harmless song into something magical because of certain performance details??????
Malta - I.N.O.F.F.E.N.S.I.V.E. Even blander than Australia this year. Especially with the lyrics. Come on, bring us some of “Not My Soul” and even “Diamonds” back. If this gets a higher position than at least few songs that deserve it, I will sue EBU
Poland - Latvia 2010 teas? Modern for its time, hyped, comes from a country that did rather badly in JESC for most of their participations. Hopefully it won’t flop though, just like “Viva La Dance”...

hello yes your thoughts on eurovision?
i think they should've left flo rida in florida where he belongs and nothing in the world could have ever made me happier than the uk getting 0 points.
#i do think they should just not let non-european countries participate like my guy it's called 'euro-vision'#time for some good old fashioned gatekeeping#i mean australia is not even remotely close to europe and we ALL know israel is in the middle east so why the fuck are they participating?#also non controversial opinion but germany shouldve won in 2018 and im still salty about it#i just- *anger*#the winner of that year is called 'the chicken girl' by literally everybody bc she sang and danced like a chicken and still won somehow?#also i think austria's 2014 song sucked and the netherlands were clearly better#and that all the hate on ballads is justified *sometimes* bc a lot of people sing ballads when they can't fucking sing at all#like georgia i mean that guy tried his best but halfway through he just started yelling and i couldnt stop laughing for 30 minutes#but if italy hadn't won i would've been happy with france and switzerland bc theyre talented and shit#no ive watched eurovision and junior eurovision since i was a baby#i still remember the majority of junior eurovision songs from when i was a kid and it physically hurts to think about#i also think its so fucking weird that ukraine and russia are at war right now and both participate in eurovision#when eurovision was in kiev in 2017 there was a whole thing that ukraine wouldnt let the russian singer participate#but the fact that russia wanted to send a participant to the country they are actively at war with is also so fucking weird to me#'we will be sending someone to ukraine the country we are at war with to beat them in an international song contest' is just weird#also how you can literally predict who the jury will vote for depending on who their neighbours are#eurovision is part 'no politics here no way' part 'equality for all!!! unity!!! yay!!!' and part 'yeah were voting for the neighbours'#ye those are the thoughts im so glad italy won tho it was a fantastic song and the bandmembers are also really really hot#and i liked the heels the singer was wearing#and the song fucking slapped too#(i do think ukraine was fucking awesome tho it's like a really hypnotic song and i can't get over it)#eurovision#ask#bataranswers#i promise after this there will be some content that's not me being serious or talking about eurovision (derogatory)
