It's really fascinating to see just how deeply seeded the legend of Alexander the Great was and is culturally and mythologically. There are depictions of him from across different cultures and genres (ie Persian, Mongolian, Indian, Medieval manuscripts, renaissance painting etc). I've come across legends and depictions of him diving in a primitive submarine, being carried across the sky by griffins, jousting, and even finding the garden of Eden! When you think about it, its basically fan-fiction about him, so you're kind of carrying on the tradition with "The Lost Queen" 👀...

On that note, you know how Reader sees her name in the history book right before she goes back in time? I imagine Reader would become a sort of legend in her own right, by the oh so beloved wife and Queen of Alexander the Great, but also because no one can pin down her origins, creating an air of mystery and romance. Was this "Lost Queen" a princess from one of the many cities he conquered? A nymph? An angel? A peasant girl Alexander fell in love with on the spot? The jury's still out.

I'd also imagine that historians and artist would gloss over or forget the more... problematic aspects of the relationship and lean heavily into the "deeply in love with and devoted to" bit. The 'great romance' between Alexander and Reader will be depicted in the art of numerous cultures and become an especially popular motif in the renaissance. A love story for the ages! Come the 21st century, there will be numerous documentaries produced and youtube videos made trying to figure out the origins of this 'Lost Queen'. Some may even jokingly-but-not-jokingly suggest that maybe she was a time traveller!

Of course, when and if Reader, I imagine it will be a while before she can wrap her head around the fact of being a historical icon. This girl will have gone through a lot of shit.

There are many legends about Alexander the Great, some even mentioned in the Bible, however subtly.

I just thought about that! Y/n will be like a legend, the owner of the stone, the Queen who disappeared and was so loved by the great conqueror. Of unknown and even mythological origin for some, little is known about it. The only official information was about how much Alexander loved her, loved her so much that he almost destroyed the city of Babylon - well, I can't say more, but here's something for you to think about.

I can see that there are statues of her throughout the conquered world, made by order of Alexander to leave her love eternal, her beauty eternal. These statues are the only clues as to what she looked like, although the features are not entirely true.

There is no doubt that their "romance" will be embellished and used as the basis for various forms of art. Nobody knew about the toxic part, the obsession and the terrors, but about how much Alexander loved his Queen and how much she must love him.

Imagine when Y/n goes back to his time and discovers all this? About how his suffering was written down in history as something so beautiful and romantic. The poor girl has been through so much shit and still has to deal with being billed as Alexander's "Beloved Queen"... And the historians and scholars trying to figure out how and why it disappeared...

I always found it strange that Jenrya and Shiuchon's mom, Lee Mayumi, has an official maiden name yet the other Tamers' moms only has their husbands' surname:

Takato: Matsuda Takehiro and Matsuda Yoshie

Ruki: Makino Rumiko (Ruki's grandma's surname is Hata)

Juri: Katou Hajime and Katou Shizue

Hirokazu: Shiota Hirofumi and Shiota Takako

Kenta: Kitagawa Shunsuke and Kitagawa Akemi

Jenrya: Lee Jan'yuu and Lee (Yanase) Mayumi

No other moms in Tamers are provided a maiden name except Mayumi, which is strange if you think about it.

But then I learned something awhile back about Chinese and maiden names. Chinese women don't take their husbands' surnames, they keep theirs and only their children inherit their fathers' name.

I felt stupid because of course naming culture is different across the world, I grew up in a culture that doesn't even make use of surnames, why was I surprised xp

But anywho, Mayumi is Japanese. As such it's only natural she'd still take her husband's surname, Lee, but due to cross-cultural reasons, she still has the option to keep her maiden name which she may or may not have done had she and the rest of her family lived in China

Tl;dr

Cross-cultural marriage leads to a fictional Japanese woman having an official maiden name while the rest of her fellow moms don't

But seriously tho, if Ruki's mom and dad are divorced, then why is her name still Makino Rumiko? In this essay I will-

I must admit, sometimes I do feel like a ye olden solider, sending letters to my beloved across the waves during wartime. Oh my dearest Lydia, I hope the kudos and comments crops have been plentiful this season. Your last letter left me weeping. Why must you put poor Reginald through such pain?

(I gotta admit, I still can't believe that I'm talking to you. I've been looking up to your work for so long...it just feels a bit surreal, even now! Glad you like hearing my ramblings! And that you liked my vampire prompt! Did not realize you'd write back when I sent that in. Look at us now, huh?)

(Speaking of prompts, I sent those jukebox and willex ones too. And I loved them both so so much, I shall scream about them more when it is not 2 am because I need sleep)

(Oh and the update of If I Was You!!! Amazing, Stellar, Incredible, Reggie, Carrie, Julie shenanigans is my new favorite thing, DID YOU JUST DOUBLE THE CHAPTER COUNT, and I'm like 90% sure Trevor is in deep trouble with a certain angry jazz ghost. Seriously loving it)

I actually do not remember what it was like to send in 1/5 asks, because I did not get a Tumblr until very reccently! I've always been a nerdy person, but Jatp is my first time being really in a fandom. You gotta do something new in quarantine, right?

Ah yes. Luke and Emily. To me, it just seems obvious that there's so much love between them. Even with all the pain. You get it. You put it down so eloquently.

As for what kind of stories I like to read...it seriously depends on my mood.

I like niche aus, passion projects. Stories where you can just feel the author's love for the world they're inventing. But I tend to lean towards cannonverse. I like ghost stories, it's what drew me to this show in the first place. And I love exploring that concept. (Being forever gone, and always the same...it's just fascinating to me)

Platonic goodness is just WONDERFUL for this show. I will read anything with cuddles. I am touched starved and these kiddos are too, and I will cry about them puppy piling every damn day. Plus there's just some much POTENTIAL for future friendships! I love ones where Flynn and Carrie get to interact with the boys as well. And 90s content, from before and after the orpheum, just hits hard.

I really wasn't expecting to get invested in the couples on this show, but something about them is moving to me. So I do love to read about them. Watching two queer kids who lived during incredibly important areas of queer history find love together after death really hit hard for me, and there's just something so bittersweet about a girl and ghost deciding to love each other for the little time they're given.

I love family dynamics too. Anything with Ray and his seven disaster children, the band and Trevor.... I think Julie and Emily is one of my favorite dynamics to explore. A girl who lost her mother and a mother who lost her son, both grieving but with one able to speak to the dead...it's just very powerful to me.

(And of course, Luke and Emily, but I figured you already knew that)

Mostly...I like seeing the messy stuff. The unexpected consequences, the baggage. I want to see the messy emotions, the grief and anger, the jealously, the disorientation. I look for those glass shards, that might be too sharp to ever be addressed on the show. Not even the big, monumental plot lines just... the harder pieces of life, the little moments that don't fit neatly into a nine episode arc.

I just want to see them live you know? Love, laughter and loss all mixed together.

(One of my all time favorite tropes is "found family gets broken apart by trauma, only to find each other again and come back stronger than ever." I feel like this explains a lot of my taste in fiction)

The POTC au is so freaking good man. The character dynamics are just on FIRE. Everything is broken and messy and the relationships genuinely tug at my heartstrings. It's such a fascinating story. Highly recommend, even with the cliff hangers.

OH HOW COULD I FORGET PAWPRINTER? Man oh man I love all her work. The wheelies art and steals universe is freaking amazing, not an avacado had me in tears (of laughter, till things got surprisingly sad). And All that Remains...slow burn Willex perfection. Jedi Alex and Pilot Willie have my HEART.

I don't think I've read firefall and weneedglitter (or if I have, I'm just not connecting the names to their pieces. I don't always remember author names. it's a problem). I will go look for them though! Cannot wait!

For more recs, I recently binge read We Found Wonderland. I was not mentally prepared for the sheer amount of feelings that gave me. Highly recommend, if you ever want an emotional rollercoaster with an incredibly satisfying end.

Going on to more serious subjects...I'm sorry your family doesn't see your grief for what it is: honest. Better to feel everything quietly, than make it an easily understadnable performance. Fake grief is so easy to spot.

I think of that scene from "Forever," when Buffy breaks down and tells Dawn that she has to keep busy, because if she stops, it means Joyce is really gone. There's a lot of truth there.

On a tangent here but.. there was a very long period in my life when I was told the ways I expressed my emotions were "incorrect". And I found that sometimes, no matter how you show your emotions, you'll always be criticized. Numbness can be called disinterest, but sobbing can be called attention-seeking too. Too big, too small: that jury was impossible to please This may not apply in your situation but...it's okay to feel however you can. It's the only think you can do, really.

As I've said before, Grief is such an odd trickster.

Don't you ever get tired of missing people... This past year, I've been so weary of grief. Sometimes it can be so sharp, but it's that dull ache. That ball and chain, no longer cutting through your skin, but rubbing it raw, weighing you down.

And people don't like to talk about that part, because it's long and tiresome, but oh, is it there. I find it hard to talk about my grief, because sometimes there's just so much of it. I could drown in it, and that fear keeps me from looking to close. To incorrectly quote Jane Austin: "If I missed you a little less, I might be able to talk about it more."

(Sometimes it's faceable. But sometimes you just can't bear it. And that's okay.)

But what you wrote in that eulogy...the love is there. It's in every word you write. I cried reading that section. I feel honored once again to see some of your jagged pieces. You're sharing your heart, and there's just so much love.

In the wise words of an author I know, "Love is like the snow Reggie. It never goes away."

I think it's safe to say congrats, you've officially destroyed me! I was not prepared for that at ALL. I should know better by now I guess.

I can't get over that even though they all take place in very different universe, all your stories just feel so connected! The way this talked about those headphones, which you mentioned in the first chapter of Kill Your Heroes...it's just so cool. All the characterization and backstory is just so well thought out, and it genuinely blows my mind.

I didn't think I could love Nicky Peters more. I was wrong. The way you write about him...even though you never go into exactly what happened to him after Reggie's death, you can just feel how much it's shapped him as a person. And the trauma around his father, and how he fears becoming like that, was just so beautifully written. He's just so lovable and flawed and trying so damn hard and you made my heart ache for him. Again.

You always take these genuinely crazy situations and...you just make them feel so real. I love you explore the strains such a revelation would put on Nicky's own life, it just makes everything so compellingly messy. It seriously feel like I was watching a real-life account of a family trying to deal with such a massive complication.

That porch scene had me in tears both times I read it. Reggie's just always a big brother, even though Nicky is more than twice his age now. My heart was shattered, and then you slowly mended it, piece by piece. And for absolutely no reason at all, you wouldn't happen to have a reference for the porch, would you?

Mord knocked on the cabin door. The guard opened it at once.

The degree to which he was still trusted by the crew was shown by their choice of guard. It was Bron, the cabin-boy.

“Yes, Sir?”

“Bron, would you please ask Alor, Acting Captain Kotance, a representative of the Master’s Council and Cron to come here?”

Bron was aware that such a group meant something important. He went at once to Alor’s cabin just down the passage. He spoke with her through the door, staying in the hallway so that he could watch the Captain’s cabin door. Mord only waited, as expected.

Alor went to get the witnesses that Mord had asked for, and Bron came back to his guard post by the door. The group assembled quickly, coming one at a time to the Captain’s cabin.

Last to arrive was Alor, who came in the company of Master Juris.

The others waited in nervous silence until Alor began the meeting. As Purser, she was the ship’s legal officer for most things and all official documents except the log were her province.

She began, “Mord, we have assembled as you have requested. What do you contemplate doing that needs witness from all sections of the crew?”

Mord drew a deep breath and knit his brows before replying, “I have to do the hardest duty of my life. I have looked at all of the charges in the documents that you have provided me and reflected on how best to deal with them. They are all true. I cannot in conscious good faith waste the time of the Longin or the Council trying to fight this.”

Concerned, Master Juris asked, “Will you mount no defense? These are serious charges. You could lose much, perhaps even your life.”

“I can only say in my defense that I plead mitigating circumstance. I believe that I went onto dry land when Kurin was so viciously poisoned. I have regarded her as a daughter and responded to her poisoning with a parent’s rage instead of a Captain’s thought and consideration.”

Kotance thoughtfully ran a hand through his red hair before speaking, “As Acting Captain, I must inquire into your state of mind. You say that you ran hard aground. What do you think has put you safely afloat now? In short, are you refusing to fight as a way to get yourself punished for the killings? Do you have safe water under your keel?”

“I believe that I do, Captain. I do not want to be punished but I must take the responsibility for what I have done. I did not even realize that I had done anything seriously wrong until after I saw the charges in writing and had the time to reflect on them. I believe that I am now past that lapse of sanity. I will accept the decision of the Council. Until then, I will serve the Longin in whatever capacity I am allowed.”

Chapter 23: Questions

Kurin braced herself. She had interviewed many of the Grandalor’s company. What she had found had bothered her a great deal because it showed a dark side to the fleet that she loved. Many of the crew had done bad things and had deserved their punishments. Nearly as many more had been the victims of crimes by high officers on their ships or were inconvenient to keep for one or another reason. They had been disposed of.

The Oath of Adoption, where they repudiated their old ship names and took Grandalor in their places was a thing that had been planned without Barad or Tanlin’s knowledge. Originally, only about half the ship’s crew had planned to participate.

When it became obvious that the Captain who had helped them in their need was himself in trouble, they had pulled together behind him unanimously. He had not let them down and they would stand with him. The Oath had been a way to show both him and the Council how they felt. Their loyalty was ferocious.

A lifetime of habit made the very idea of accepting what Barad might tell her as questionable at best. Tanlin had put it succinctly. “Oi understand t’at i’ Barad told ye t’at t’e sky wa’ blue t’at ye wad probably look up t’ check. Twad be best t’ interview ‘im last o’ t’e crew but before Morgu an’ Silor. T’en ye’ll ‘ave somet’in’ t’ use for judgin’ w’at ‘e tells ye.”

Kurin had taken that advice. She drew a deep breath and knocked on the Captain’s cabin door. Tanlin opened it at once. Barad was seated at a small table in the middle of the cabin.

“Do ye wont m’ t’ stay or go?” asked the Captain.

“I would appreciate it if you stayed but all of my other interviews have been solo. I had better do this alone,” Kurin answered.

“T’at’s good,” said Tanlin, stepping through the door. “T’is way shows nae favoritism.”

As the door slid shut behind her Barad smiled wanly and waved her an invitation to sit across from him. “I won’t bite. It cost us dear to get you here to help us. I can’t see how you can save me. I am grateful that you will try to get my wife and crew off.”

Kurin replied thoughtfully, “I may not ever like you, Barad, but you deserve the best justice that can be. I have learned things that I wish that I had never heard or read. I can check almost everything from the fleet archives when we Gather for the trial. I am sure that what I have learned will be backed up.”

The usually self-assured Kurin looked at Barad in dismay and said, “It has me confused. I love my fleet. They have done some terrible things. My own ship is involved. Are they good people or bad? What about you?” The dismay was real enough but the questions were calculated to obtain a candid reaction from Barad.

Barad’s reply shook her to the keel. He considered thoughtfully before answering. “They’re people, Kurin, with both good and bad. Some few in influential places have abused their positions but most try to steer an honest course.

“Me?” he shrugged. “I’ve been worse than most but not as bad as painted by some. I’ve tried to pick up their mistakes and keep the innocent or merely foolish from swimming to your foster father.”

“You mean like Lenai or Darkistry?”

“Good examples. One of each. Darkistry was raped and framed. Lenai simply got pregnant before she could get legally married. The birth slot that she would have to have taken belonged to a friend who was married and had waited three Gatherings for the Lottery to give her a chance at a child.

Lenai had a good heart. At the small Fall gathering, she went to look for a ship that would take her. While she was looking, her ‘friends’ put her goods on the raft, after pilfering the best of them, and left a note barring her from returning to the Darok. I took her and never regretted it. She was the best sail-lofter and rigging surveyor in the fleet so far as I am concerned.

“Little Arnat alone would have been worth taking her in. My wife was long dead, so I gave her my birth slot.” He smiled softly.

Kurin could not help asking, “Why did you take in Silor the way that you did?”

“For five Gatherings, he was my eyes and ears aboard the Longin, though he would never tell Ship’s Business until the fiasco this last Gathering. When his delusions about you led him to be cast off your ship, I could not help him openly because he was to be a key person in the plot to poison you.

“We picked him up in secret. After he had done his part, I would have given him some education in Arrakan writing and figuring and sold him as an indenture to their fleet, where he would have probably become a good officer in time.”

The blunt revelation left Kurin feeling ill, needing to hide. She pulled herself together and asked, “Who all knew of the plan to kill me?”

“At first, only myself, Mister Morgu, and one other that Mister Morgu picked. I later learned that he was Merk, Master Selked’s apprentice, who was needed to make the poisoned kit.”

“What do you mean, ‘at first’?”

“I was troubled by something about the plot but couldn’t put a finger on it. It nagged at me. I know that doesn’t sound like much but very little that I’ve ever done bothers me. I pay attention when something does.

“Shortly after picking up Silor, I took both Tanlin and Master Selked into my confidence. They showed me the fatal errors in my reasoning.

“Tanlin reminded me that by Arrakan custom and Law I would be forsworn if I went ahead. You and Captain Mord were both at our wedding feast. That meant that our enmity was forever over, or I would lose her as wife. Though it broke both of our hearts, she would have left me. How do I tell you that she is more important to me than even my ship?”

The question was rhetorical but Kurin interrupted to answer anyway. She said quietly, “You don’t have to. You stepped down as Captain to save her. That’s proof enough for me.”

Barad gave her a surprised look. I knew the she’d be intelligent. I had not really expected wisdom.

He went on, “Master Selked pointed out that though I had always treated my old grudge as if it were the Longin that I hated, it was really only Mord that I had any complaint of, and that over twenty Gatherings gone. In fact, the very thing that I held against him was the one time that I had completely bested him. Hardly a reason for hate.

“One thing that I pride myself on is that I can change course immediately when I believe I am wrong. We had that one Ord spine unaccounted, and it worried me because none of us knew where it was. I logged and announced Standing General Orders that any use of Ord was mutiny. I further ordered that if any part of the Ord were to be found still aboard, it should be destroyed.”

Kurin paused to consider what to ask next, thoroughly disturbed by all that she was hearing. “That explains the timing of those orders. I found them in the log and they’ve been mentioned in my other interviews.

“You have also filled in the one hole in what Tanlin told me. She tried to protect you. She told me the truth but left you out of the plot to poison me. Now that you have told me the rest of the truth, I like her even better and trust you more as well.

“Several people have mentioned Purser Morgu’s activities during the Gathering. What can you tell me?”

Chapter 13: Outlaw

In the light of the early morning, the day after Kurin was poisoned, a Dark Dragon sailor came up the side of the ship and sprinted towards Sula. He shouted to get her attention, “Captain! Loris and I have just found out that the Grandalor left her berth last night! She was last seen on a course of SSE.”

Galvanized to action she ordered, “Have the Hailing Drum sound ‘Emergency Recall’ and tocsin ‘prepare for battle’. Go!”

She ran toward the bridge. Amid the harsh rattle of the tocsin and the deep, carrying notes of the hailing drum, she turned and said intensely, “Captain Mord! You must notify your Council, so that the Grandalor can be outlawed. We have no such restriction. The Soaring Bird and I will hunt wide apart, in the hope of overtaking them. We will return here in two day’s time whether or not they have been caught.

“I have never left survivors in the water, and never felt more like doing so, but once. If I find them, that ship will no longer plague your fleet.” Her face contorted in private grief. She put her head in her hands, shoulders shaking. “I have prayed never to kill another ship. Dragons grant that we can take them without loss.”

Mord looked at her, startled, feeling more than a little guilt that he had just been picturing the Dark Dragon destroying the Grandalor. He didn’t want Sula to have more pain. He shook his head, puzzled that the thought of sinking the Grandalor should bother Sula.

She straightened up, hardening visibly. Putting the moment of vulnerability behind her. The tocsin was rattling a call that had never been heard in the Naral fleet. In the background the mighty signaling drum of the Dark Dragon was thundering in a strange, hollow voice that almost seemed to arise from that deeps ‘Emergency Recall!’ It was followed moments later by the higher note of the Longin’s signal drum sounding ‘Recall and Assemble!’ The Longin’s crew boiled out of the market and the various ships that they had been visiting. The Soaring Bird was sounding a mellow seeming but powerful trumpet. Her crew too was racing for boats.

The crew of the Dark Dragon was diving into rowing boats and dashing for their ship. The tocsin of the Dark Dragon could be heard, high and sharp, drumming unfamiliar orders, along with such familiar ones as ‘raise sail.’ Tall thin bundles were rising up swiftly, their feet at the deck, their tops high above the ‘A’ frame masts, more similar bundles were rising up on tackle between the masts. At the drum call from the tocsin ‘make all sail’, the tall bundles opened with a slam and rattle of canvas audible on the market rafts as they caught the wind.

The Dark Dragon’s sails looked like an array of giant lobster claws reaching for the sky. She slipped free of her anchorage and began to gather way. The tocsin sounded again, and the claw-sails leaned over in their tackle to nearly sideways, catching the wind better as the ship was brought into trim.

Gathering speed, the Dark Dragon swept around the western end of the anchored Naral fleet. Sailors were pulling open her fore-deck, revealing a huge catapult. Her harpoon catapults were being freed in their mounts and tested for aiming up as well as out and down. Sailors could be seen racking ammunition by the catapults. There were strange shot and other things that could not be made out due to the distance. It was not harpoons. By the time that she came about on to her SSE tack, spray was flying away from her bows.

The Soaring Bird was not idle either. Amid the alien sound of blowing horns, her sails, also big lobster-claws, came up. They rose more sideways from the start. Whatever her means of communication, she too, had slipped her mooring and was moving out. There was only a small purl of spray at her bows as she followed the Dark Dragon around the Naral fleet.

“I thought that the Dark Dragon was the fastest ship I’d ever seen . . . .” said Captain Mord watching in amazement from the front of the Council Pavilion.

Master Juris beside him, standing on a bench to see better, said, “She was — — Until the Soaring Bird got underway. Come, we still have to get something done about the Grandalor.”

Captain Sarfin, upon hearing in a few words what had happened, ordered the Council’s Drummers to spread the word to all ships, ‘Captains’ Council! Emergency!’ Those Captains not on their ships came at once to the Council Pavilion. Hailing Drums on ships farther out, relayed the message to those still further out. Boats were being launched all over the fleet.

While the Council was assembling, the Pavilion was full of the buzz of Captains comparing notes.

“Did you see those strangers go? Fastest ships I’ve ever seen.”

“I saw. Saw that monster catapult under the fore-deck, too. Can’t imagine any good use for a machine like that. What are they up to, do you suppose?”

“I think that we’re going to find out soon enough. Sarfin is about to call us to order.”

Sarfin raised both hands for attention. The hum of voices stopped.

“Captains, we face a grave crisis. I can think of no worse thing in all of my Gatherings. We need to decide what course to set in the face of this. You have all heard that Kurin Behar Longin has fallen desperately ill. The fact is no longer disputable. She was deliberately poisoned by a party presently unknown.

“I must ask, with the authority of a Council Requirement for Knowledge, officially overriding any Ship’s Business, have any of you caught and kept or sold an Ord?” He looked old and tired as he asked this terrible question.

Three Captains, also shaken, raised their hands.

The first one, Captain Darok, of the Muline, said levelly, “The Muline has not caught an Ord, but I know who would buy one. The Grandalor approached us on the open sea, about four full Wohans ago, inquiring for an Ord and offering many Strong Skins and Glue blocks for it, if we should find one. Captain Barad himself talked to me, and his officers to mine.”

One of the others nodded agreement, “Happened to us too. Almost three and a half Wohans back.”

Merced, Captain of the Dolthin, said heavily, “I sold it to him about three Wohans ago. He said that he was going to try to make an infusion of it to stun Strong Skins. He claimed that he hoped to make them safer to catch.”

Sarfin said sternly, “That is the thing we most needed to know.” He held out for all to see, the innocent appearing awl with the ghastly green stain that revealed its true nature. “This was used to injure and perhaps kill two people. Kurin was the first. At least one sailor known to be of the Grandalor’s crew bet a Grython crewman the set of sail stitching tools that this awl came out of that he could not take this awl and, undetected, pierce any part of Kurin’s food. It was poked into her mid-day meal just once. She collapsed last evening and was rushed to care aboard the Dark Dragon.

“Early this morning, the Grython crewman, whose name we still do not know, heard of Kurin’s illness. He suspected that he had been used, and tried to bring the awl to Captain Sula. Not knowing that it was an Ord spine, he put it into his pocket. He collapsed on the way, and was taken to the Dark Dragon sickbay. He implicated the Grandalor.

“Unfortunately, with what we have just heard, the facts are clear. The Grandalor – Captain, officers and men – have long plotted the death of Kurin Behar Longin.

“Kurin is an exceptional person. As the youngest full journeyman boat-builder in fleet history, she has become a fully legal adult. She is practiced in many skills, yet finds the time to make some of the finest toys that our children play with. She has lately demonstrated a new form of navigation – a priceless skill. The Grandalor’s action robs not only the Longin, but all of us as well.

“I have looked into Council records. I can find no other case of the deliberate, planned murder of a crewman on one ship by the officers and crew of another ship. I am going to give up the deck to discussion. We must set our course carefully. These are uncharted waters.”

An uneasy silence followed. Merced broke it. “I can only think that the punishment should be fit to the crime. At the least, a large part of the crew knew of what was to be done.

“This is the first time that I have heard of a ship being guilty of a crime. A Captain, rarely. Some member of a crew? It has happened. Many, officers and crew alike, being in on the plot? Never before, nor ever again … .”

“I think that I see where you are going,” Captain Hored, of the Grython, cut into Merced’s long pause. “I can only see one way to handle this. Outlawry. For the entire ship. Let the Grandalor be stricken from the rolls of the Naral fleet. Send the word to our neighboring fleets as well. Give her no place to run. Give the ship itself, her accounts and all of the goods in her to whoever captures her.

“Let us also keep careful account of all those known to be aboard. If any are found in our waters, let them be brought to trial, to determine their guilt or innocence in this crime.

“Silor Elon is known to have delivered the lethal awl, along with the other tools. The Grandalor’s Master Boat-wright, Selked, put his mark on the awl when he made it. I recognize it, having bought many tools of his making before. Captain Barad Maks and his officers negotiated for the Ord. These men should be executed at once if seen in our waters.”

There was a rumble of agreement from the assembled Captains. With some debate of particular points, and the agreement that it should be made a precedent, the notion was passed. The Grandalor was an outlaw, with no fleet to call on for aid.

Chapter 5: Strangers at the Gathering

The night before the Gathering was due to begin officially, two strange, large ships came up and hove to, about a half mile off from the anchorage. They had arrived during the dark of the moons, and none had noted their coming. With the dawn, none could miss the strangers.

One was a monster by any definition. All visible parts of the ship were jet-black. It was pretty long, but several ships in the Naral fleet were longer. What made it so big was that it had two three hundred foot hulls, with rakish shearwater bows. The hulls were spanned from bows to sterns by a large flat expanse, perhaps two or three decks thick. It was hard to tell at this distance. There was a raised navigation bridge about forty feet back from the bows. For masts it had three pairs of poles that were fastened together at the tops by spacious platforms and possibly a hundred feet tall. They formed ‘A’ frames that spanned the ship from side to side. There were no visible spars and the rigging, though present, seemed sparse.

Its companion was about two hundred and eighty feet long, also with twin hulls, but there, any similarity stopped. Its hulls were unequal in size, the smaller one being fully eighty feet shorter. Both hulls were narrow, almost knife like, and it had three masts, off the center-line of the craft, closer to the larger hull. They seemed far too short.

Small boats were sailing in from the big ships. They were twin hulled as well.

“Those ships are weird, and those little boats are weirder, too. Never seen anything like ‘em,” said a sailor to anybody.

Juris, the Longin’s Master Boat-builder, replied, “Catamarans they’re called. They’ve been played with from time to time. Fast aren’t they? Never heard of making one as a ship, before, let alone two.”

By this time, the two boats were tying up at the floats. Master Juris noted, without saying anything, that they were tied up with quick release knots. Each crew formed a shield around one person from their boat.

From the unequal hulled ship this person was a man of medium height, apparently the Captain. He wore his black hair complexly braided. He had a loose shirt, tied at the waist by tails made for the purpose and snug trousers tucked into wide topped soft boots. His crew wore variations on the theme.

From the larger ship, the individual was a woman whose red-brown hair was worn tied back in a fall. She wore a loose shirt, similar to the other man’s but with a belt of large polished black overlapping scales, each decorated with an inlaid medallion of polished shell. Supported by the belt were a flattish kit and a large but empty knife scabbard at her left hip and a long empty scabbard of strange design at her right. Her loose pants bloused down and tucked into the tops of snug, calf high boots made of glittering green Lesser Sea Dragon hide. A document case of tanned Strong Skin leather under her left arm, the lady simply reached up to one of the bollards the climbing net was secured to and pulled herself up to deck level with her right arm. None of her crew seemed to notice her feat as they swarmed up the net.

The woman spoke to the gawkers in an accent full of lilting overtones, “Where do we find the ones in authority here? We wish to present our credentials.” Some of the people tore their eyes away from the visitor’s outlandish garb and pointed out the Council Pavilion.

Kurin, who was among the curious watchers, turned to Master Juris and said in surprise, “She must be as strong as Cat was. Did you see how she just reached up to the raft rim and pulled herself up one handed until she could sit on the edge?”

“Yes,” he replied. “She had that package of documents in her left hand. It was like she never even gave it a second thought.”

Roper said, “I noticed that all of the others used both hands to get up onto the raft.” He paused and added untactfully, “I thought that Captains were supposed to be picked for brains.”

“Maybe she was,” Kurin shot back. “Not everyone who’s strong is stupid.”

“You’re right,” replied Roper, abashed. “Cat was strong and smart.”

Their men standing guard outside, the two Captains, for such they were, went inside the Council Pavilion. Captain Sarfin of the Dorton, was seated at a writing table working on the agenda of the Council. He was the leader of the Council again this Gathering. He looked up and smiled.

“If you come in peace, then welcome to the Spring Gathering of the Naral fleet.”

Relief flooded the features of the two. The woman spoke first again. “I am Captain Sula Corin Dark Dragon, Commander of the Winternight ship Dark Dragon, come from and representing the Corlis fleet. We do seek permission to conduct some business, but mainly, we are seeking information.” She handed her document package to Sarfin, who examined it with interest, and made notes in his ledger.

“I Captain Huld Barsan Soaring Bird of the Barant fleet am,” said the man, speaking clearly but with odd construction. “Also information seeking I am. Opportunity to trade welcome is.”

Catpain Sarfin noted, “I see that your one set of documents is for both ships. That is unusual.”

Sula smiled easily and said, “The Barant fleet is unusual, and the Honored Huld is even more so. The Barant fleet does not set much store on written credentials. The existence of a ship is license enough. From the day that we met, we have been what the Barant fleet call ‘Dragon Bonded.’ Mutual obligations have made our lives inseparable, save by fate. Because of our Dragon Bond, the Corlis fleet issued those credentials.”

“Very sensible,” laughed Sarfin. “Sometime, when I am not so busy, I would like to hear your tale. For now, I will have the Anchorage Master assign your ships to berths close by each other. Permission to trade goes with that. There is a fee of five hundred glue blocks or fifty Strong Skins, or an equal value in other trade goods. Also, you must sign the Gathering’s Log Book.” He proffered a book, opened to a page, and a feather pen. Sula took the pen and examined it, then handed it back.

She produced a writing case from her sash-belt and took out a fine tipped brush and a pen made of springy bone. She inked the brush first and wrote a neat vertical line of strange characters. Then she dipped her pen into the case’s ink well and began writing, neatly, without any blot.

She filled in her ship’s, name, principal officers and nature of her business. At the top of the next page, Huld applied two stamps from his writing kit, selected a brush and signed his ship’s name after one stamp and his own name after the other in unusual characters that Captain Sarfin recognized as written Barant. He put back the brush and took a pen like Sula’s to fill out the rest of the information in Common.

“If there should be a problem in making payment,” said Sarfin, examining the entries with interest, “I am sure that I can get the Council to reduce or waive the fee. After all, you have come half-way around the world to be here.”

Sula smiled, “I think that there will be no problem with payment. The Dark Dragon is a dedicated Predator Hunter. We take Wing Ray, Strong Skin, Moon Flats, Lesser Dragons and Hags. We also take all of the usual fish.”

“I help may need. Cargo luxury is, nor valued yet.”

“Honored One, I shall cover it for you, until the market values your goods,” said Sula pressing her hands together and making a small bow.

“That is settled, then,” said Sarfin. “Now, what information is it that has brought you both so far?”

“We are trying to find the truth of rumors that there was a Great Sea Dragon — Some say Iren and some Mecat — that stayed with a ship of a fleet. So far, all that we have found are rumors. Truly, we are about to give up. We have traveled half around Sea with nothing to show for the trip but some exotic trade goods.”

Grinning broadly, Sarfin said, “Oh, the Dragons are real enough. I saw them myself. However, your best information will come from the crew of the Longin, particularly, their Purser, Alor, their Captain Mord, and especially the young girl Kurin, who keeps a toy booth in the market portion of the rafts.”

Sula and Huld looked at each other in delight.

“We have found them!”

“Here Dragon knowledge!” their voices crossed each other.

Huld added thoughtfully, “Meditate I must on this event when to the Soaring Bird return I.”

“Yes,” Sula added matter-of-factly. “Will you request that one of your Captains carry word to the Corlis fleet when you do?” With a curious small bow to her, Huld replied, “Done it shall be.”

Returning her attention to Captain Sarfin, Sula asked, “Does your custom or law allow my crew to carry their personal sidearms? We normally carry both a large combat knife and a small ax.” She indicated her empty scabbards. “I will guarantee that any of my crew who come the Gathering hooded will not be armed. That will limit their response to any attempt at baring their faces to unarmed combat.”

Captain Sarfin regarded Sula carefully and said, “Why would they fight over something like that?”

As Captain Sula, showing the first trace of nervousness that Captain Sarfin had seen in her, replied, “Winternight regards such an assault as worse than rape. If the hooded Winternighters are armed, the odds are good that they will kill the assailant before they have time to think. To be honest, I am not fully comfortable without my hood and I adopted onto the Dark Dragon at the start of the first Boren Current War.”

Captain Sarfin thought carefully and replied, “It is legal for your people to be armed because such an issue has never come up before. Let your crew know that our law and custom will require a non-lethal and preferably non-injurious response.”

Sula smiled again and bobbed her head. “I can do that. It is the same in our host, the Corlis fleet.”

The far away rattle of a tocsin drum and the exotic, never before heard in the Naral fleet, calls of a bugle or trumpet caused everyone on the rafts or on shipboard to drop what they were doing and watch. Eight large pulling boats came out from between the bows of each ship and picked up cables dropped from bollards at the prows. The big strangers began to move slowly toward their berths on the north side of the anchorage. The drum and horn fell silent except for occasional tiny course corrections.

A spectator on the raft, close to Master Juris said, “They’re so slow that I could have walked that distance, up and down the deck, by now.”

“I’m sure that you could have,” Master Juris smiled. “But pulling two thousand tons might slow you down just a mite. That’s some fine piloting that you’re seeing. They aren’t letting the load get away from them. The real test will come in just a bit, when they pull up to the anchorage floats.”

Kurin joined them. “Sorry that I’m late, but I knew the ships had to be slow and I had some toy customers.”

“What did you sell?” asked the spectator idly.

“One of my loom kits and a rope winder,” said Kurin.

Master Juris turned from watching the ships at that last. “You mean that those things that you made at the suggestion of the fleet’s Craft Council last Gathering are already selling? They’re expensive.”

“They are,” she said, putting her head in her hands in mock frustration. “The Masters are coming to see if I’ve made what they asked me to, back last Gathering. The way they look the toys over is driving me as crazy as a mating paddle duck. They can’t seem to put anything back the way it was. The only consolation is that they return with other people and get them to buy.”

Just then drum and horn sounded, and all else was put aside to see what the strangers would do next. It was unorthodox. The pulling boats, that could now be seen to have a dozen oars each, darted back, between the hulls of each of the two monsters, under the massive decks that bridged them. You could see the lines draw tight as the boats applied all the power at their command to stop the ships. They slowed gradually and stopped — — — exactly at the floats. One boat came out from under each ship, and attached its cable to the float. A second, light line was cast down from above and tied to the end of the cable. Each boat disappeared back between the hulls of the mother ship and did not emerge.

“Neatly done,” said Master Juris, ruffling Kurin’s hair. “These folk are good seamen, whatever else they may be.”

Kurin and Master Juris were not the only ones to watch the strangers come to moorage.

“Luve, Somet’ing’s bot’ering ye. Ye keep lookin’ at t’ose twa new ships,” Tanlin said softly to Barad. Two of the Grandalor’s deck-hands were following her attentively.

i'm poking around netflix, as one does, and for some reason i go like fuck it, i'll watch some documentaries

which should make anybody familiar with my tastes go wtf because i am really just not a non fiction girl

but y'know, it's the end of the world, why not shake shit up a bit

and i hit on ugly delicious

so yeah, clearly david chang has Being Kind of an Asshole as part of his brand

which is fine, it's fine, i am Kind of an Asshole myself and not exactly conflict averse

but y'all the show is brilliant

so much of the brilliance is they are fearless about how food is racialized, how white supremacy devalues food based on who makes it, and how angry it makes non white americans to have to deal with

though it's interesting as hell to see how black folks evade their own anger much, much more than chinese or korean americans do

because, of course, black anger has been weaponized against black people for centuries, it's a survival mechanism engraved marrow deep and i can't fault anyone for trying to survive white america

like, the fried chicken episode has a plot line for nashville hot chicken that went to husk, an upscale place with a white executive chef, to bolton's spicy chicken and fish -- one of the originators of hot chicken, along with prince's -- in a working class black neighborhood, and to hattie b's: white owned, in a whiter, more affluent neighborhood

obviously the last is already suspect just from the name

they didn't go into where the name came from but from my years of study of antiblackness from the white side it feels like something meant to involve nostalgia, antebellum style, where A Black Woman Cooks for You

the official story, according to google, is that the joint (chain, really, with locations in tennessee, alabama, georgia, and nevada) is named after three women in the white owners' families, so there's that

but for me, the racially coded take is still there, just glossed over the way black people can be prohibited from serving on juries and as long as they can come up with a non racist justification to kick them out it is a-okay with current constitutional opinion

after hattie b's dave and his white bud from husk go back to bolton's to talk to owner dollye graham-matthews

the closest she gets to showing a negative emotion was a quiet "it cuts a little" and a mention that while she would like to open a bolton's in a more affluent neighborhood but who can afford four, five thousand for rent?

(n.b. hattie b's has a wikipedia page; bolton's doesn't even have a stub)

the other folks hiding negative emotions, especially anger, are people from what it pleases colonizers to call the "middle east"

especially syrian migrants and refugees, who are in wildly dangerous, unstable positions wherever they wound up and especially in donald trump's stephen miller's america

one thing i think they missed was in the crawfish vs shrimp episode where they contrast the very traditional, change averse food culture of new orleans with houston's, where a new creole is forming as vietnamese folks in houston meet flavors and ingredients from the gulf coast, including louisiana -- where there is a sizable vietnamese community partly because of the similarities between the mekong and mississippi river deltas

but viet-cajun cuisine is thriving in houston and invisible in nola, and they talked a lot about why that was without coming to a conclusion

it seems pretty simple to me

white americans basically want nola to be a theme park -- we always have to an extent but it's gotten much worse since katrina assisted a remarkably thorough ethnic cleansing, destroying black neighborhoods (WHICH STILL HAVEN'T BEEN REBUILT, much less repopulated by their former residents) so now white folks can experience a culture built by black people without having to go someplace with lots of black people around

change makes white tourists uncomfortable, so nothing can be permitted to change quickly or radically unless there's a white dude involved and viet-cajun hasn't been colonized yet

for fuck's sake there's viet-cajun in vietnam already but not nola

(on a personal note i wish i could go to houston and experience viet-cajun because it looks and sounds fucking amazing ‐‐ crawfish with garlic butter and vietnamese informed spice mixes needs to go in my mouth hole -- but the novel coronavirus has shattered the restaurant business)

on the whole it's a dammed good show
