Deep thoughts on Deep Cut...
Oh boy, it's been a while since I've gotten out my thinking cap for Splatoon.
From what we can tell in the new Direct, Deep Cut are definitely going to be involved in Hero Mode in some way. For one thing, they were first introduced wearing the same masks that everyone was puzzling over from the Hero Mode promo art:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and, while I missed it the first time because I was too excited about their reveal, it seems very obvious from the background of this shot that they're in the same place (or, at least, the same environment) where we first encounter Captain Three and the Squid Sisters. It seems likely that this reveal footage was lifted directly from a Hero Mode cutscene.
Also... the cephalopods' names are Shiver and Frye. So far, we've seen two major areas relevant to Hero Mode: a scorching desert presumably close to Splatsville, and the frozen arctic world of Alterna (which seems to be where Deep Cut first come into play). I wonder if that hot-and-cold aesthetic is indicative of the roles they'll play in the story...?
An interesting side note to that: a promotional tweet shared on SplatoonNA after the Direct casually refers to Shiver as a "shark tamer" (her name is even Mako in the German version!) and to Frye as "eel master". It was easy to miss, but the brief Hero Mode segment included a shot of what looks like a swarm of flying eels:
Tumblr media
...so I wonder how literal those titles are, and how relevant they'll be to the game's story?
Which leads into my biggest question:
We know that Deep Cut will be involved in Hero Mode, but how?
Callie and Marie were involved with Splat 1's Hero Mode via secretly being part of the New Squidbeak Splatoon and seeking to fight Octavio. They're part of Hero Mode because... well, Hero Mode revolves around them. Pearl and Marina, meanwhile, got involved through sheer coincidence; they basically stumbled across Agent 8 and the Cap'n and decided to help out to be nice.
Deep Cut seem like they're here on purpose. They're playing an active role, not just helping from the sidelines, and they don't seem confused about what's going on. So what is their involvement? Are they secretly part of a different vigilante group fighting the mysterious fuzz? I doubt they'll be antagonists (it just doesn't seem like the sort of thing the Splatoon devs would go for), but I'm so curious about what's going to bring them into this.
Anyway, that's all I've got for right now. In conclusion: Big Man

So laios and fallin have been ostracized by society since they were children, Marcille has lifelong grief from constantly outliving her loved ones that leads her to dark magics, kabru’s village was destroyed by monsters, senshi and mithrun both have horror movie level backstories, izutsumi was sold as a freak show attraction, and then there’s chilchuck, who is a normal ass divorced middle aged man. And somehow he’s the most shady and secretive out of all of them
Edit can y’all please let me live I didn’t make this post bc I think chilchuck doesn’t have his own trauma or doesn’t experience racism or that being a union boss is a walk in the park or whatever I made it because him lying that he cheated on his wife to get the others to stop asking about his family was funny as fuck. Come on.

The best fics are the ones that recognize that although Luke Skywalker may APPEAR on the outside to be a normal friendly twink who happens to have cool powers, especially when contrasted with such ship partners as Boba or Din or even Han, he is arguably the scariest person alive in the galaxy around the prequel era. AND, crucially, he is also a fundamentally weird guy. This man was homeschooled on a rural farm his entire life and then apprenticed to a swamp gremlin who showed him how to tap into the cosmic power of the universe. He blew up the death star age 19, killing approx 2 million-ish Imperials. He is a vortex of Force power that can communicate with the ghosts of dead Jedi. He’s staring into the distance and mumbling to himself and doing Yoda aphorisms and casually pulling out the “yeah I could crush that guy into a paste with my mind (:” and nobody around him knows what to do with that. I think he is a character who has very little frame of reference for how a Jedi or a person in general is supposed to act and there is some thing about him that is by necessity really fucking weird and a little scary but he’s so nice that it can throw you off the scent a little bit. Thanks for coming to my TED talk

now that the minecraft worldbuilding brainrot™ has kicked in, I want to discuss more mechanics
how does the 'inventory' work for you? does the player manifest a floating panel in front of them? is it a personal bag with a pocket dimension that they carry around?
can they summon hotbar items with just a hand gesture?

Au where Hiccup didn’t really teach anyone else how to train dragons and just becomes Berk’s dragon boy. They just learnt to accept Hiccup hanging out with a bunch of dragons (90% of the time he’s out flying or in the forest but they’ll wait around when he’s in the forge) and Stoick gets used to them being in his house.
There was a time where Stoick tried to put a limit to the number of dragons on the island (and in the house) and Hiccup would prepare multiple long speeches to him about why he needs another dragon.
Hiccup: Just one more I swear!
Stoick (with a Terrible Terror biting his ear): Fine. But only one more. A small one.
Hiccup: Thank you!
Hiccup: *Brings back the Screaming Death* :D

i think it would help if you wrote the rhyming pattern out, yknow like stereotypical poem style! because i didnt see the rhymes at first at all, and i can see some of them now, but i still feel like i dont completely understand where all the rhymes are/how the lines flow
oh good idea! so yeah if i rearrange the script that way you get this:
[secret life] [(post-session six) the secret keeper’s lair] “for the record, my death at the button wasn’t fair” don’t pretend you didn’t know you failed your real task. no new reds survived. “i did exactly what you asked!” technically. you’ll notice we’ve not forced you to reroll. still, you failed to-* “what, you think i wanted mumbo dead?” worse, we think this game has gotten out of your control. how about next week we let the new girl try instead?
*if grian hadn’t interrupted, the line would’ve been ‘still, you failed to carry out your designated role’
(which does kinda bother me, because i don’t like rhyming homonyms (‘roll’ with ‘role’), but considering it’s a line that was cut off and does not actually appear i managed to convince myself to let it slide)
one of the main reasons i'm so interested in how easily people spotted the rhyming is because i didn't intend for it to be super easy. it's supposed to read like a (somewhat) natural back and forth conversation at first, and then make you go back and read the lines again once you notice.
i honestly wasn't expecting the amount of variation in how easily people seem to pick up on it? and i'm not sure why that's the case, either, it's really interesting

sometimes i wish Foolish did his shift dance on the QSMP bc he could literally be talking to someone or doing smth and then out of nowhere he just starts dancing and no one knows why he does this besides Bad and Quackity
also because during serious lore time you have people seriously invested and thinking about what’s going on/what to do and behind them is a Totem constantly changing size with silly happy music

Danm, how often do people try to get you to draw Hisoka that it has to be it's own bullet point???? Godspeed. May you escape clown town soon.
it actually just started as a joke but then i got really fond of the joke so i keep it in every time i post comm terms. if someday someone out there actually wants me to draw hisoka so bad that they're willing to for real eat the €50 hisoka tax i would respect that enough to do a killer fucking job on the piece. also it would be funny as hell
