Sneak Peek of Kane & Jim #55

since i've kept you guys waiting so long i figure you deserve a little something while you wait a little more

takes place 1 week after #52: Trust

Kane woke and looked to the door. Just like every morning the past week, it was a normal door. No silver. No lock.

He changed and washed his face, creeping upstairs with the hesitancy of someone who knew he wasn’t allowed, despite knowing full-well that he was: Jim had made that clear. He felt too quiet, his ankles free of chains.

It was early morning, early enough that the sun hadn’t risen yet–that terrifying tell-tale glow didn’t shine from behind the curtains. Jim wouldn’t be awake for hours, resting upstairs while Kane slunk around in the dark, in his own house.

Kane knew just how much trust that must require. He still couldn’t believe he’d earned that much.

The fact that Jim was still feeding him his own blood was a miracle in itself. He’d given a time limit of one month. One month for Kane to get used to freedom, to going out on his own, traversing society like a normal person after years as a prisoner. An adjustment period, Jim had called it, his mercies never-ending in the face of Kane’s fear of running to and from the border on his own.

There was no way Kane could ever repay it, not in a thousand years. But he at least had to try.

He turned the knob on the stove. It was something familiar, having owned a stove himself for heating up the contents of blood-packs in his time before he came to own Jim. Human stoves, like their food itself, were more complicated: four burners instead of one, all with dials offering various degrees besides just ‘on’ or ‘off’.

And it was something he hadn’t done since before.

The circle of flames flickered to life, blue and hot and threatening.

He quickly turned it back off, luckily managing to control his strength and not break the delicate knob.

Deep breaths, Jim had said, more times than Kane could count now. Look at me. You’re okay. No one’s gonna hurt you. You’re safe here, remember?

Kane took a deep breath in, playing Jim’s soothing affirmations through his head, exhaling slowly. That’s it, there you go, the memory of Jim’s voice encouraged. You’re alright. No hurting.

After a few more of those, he turned the burner on again. The flames flicked back to life, and Kane watched them silently.

I love books, I love literature, and I love this blog, but it's only been recently that I've really been given the option to explore disabled literature, and I hate that. When I was a kid, all I wanted was to be able to read about characters like me, and now as an adult, all I want is to be able to read a book that takes us seriously.

Magnanimous Moonrise & Savage Sunset Masterpost

Hi everyone, I'm here to share a new story I've started. It's inspired very heavily by this series by @whumpsday, as well as the spin-off series Shattered by @oddsconvert. I can't say it takes place in exactly the same universe, because I had to alter some elements of the lore (specifically the mechanics of the persuasion ability, as well as vampires' dietary requirements), but they can be related however you like!

This story will contain graphic descriptions of violence, torture, heavy angst, and rape/non-con. (Since it seems to matter to some people, warning that it contains very bad things happening to a transmasculine character.) I will do my best to put specific warnings on individual chapters, but I would prefer if minors did not read this fic. It is rated M and is for an adult audience. 18+ readers only, please.

So, I am doing a fun little experiment where I am writing dueling stories. Corresponding chapters will be the same events narrated from the perspective of a different character. Savage Sunset is from the perspective of a vampire hunter, and Magnanimous Moonrise is from the perspective of a vampire. If you want a little mystery, you can read Savage Sunset first. If you want all the answers right away so you can enjoy the full brunt of the angst, you can start with Magnanimous Moonrise. I personally feel like the best experience might be starting with Savage Sunset, but you can read them in either order. The chapter numbers are chronological.

Ok I'm trying Legend of Fuyao again. This time perhaps I will triumph! I left off like 2 years ago on ep 26 or so.

Refreshing my memory by skating thru ep 16

oh look, it's sidekick bro I never cared about. Pretty sure his role in the narrative is to be a drag on FL. And fighter guy! He's much more useful.

This period is where I previously began losing my patience with the show. A lot of story time and 16 episodes had passed and I wanted to see FL taking center stage, being a powerful threat. I wanted her to be saving her love interest approx as much as he was saving her. The opening in ep 16 is right back to a situation where I want to see FL beating ass and not Wuji to show up to save the day. Scram, future boyfriend! Ladies are FIGHTING. 🙅

Watching the prime minister character be manipulated is entertaining. Fuyao is handling situation pretty well, actually. "The Earth Abdorbing Bell is back to its rightful owner. I've also found Xiaoqi. Why do I need to stay here?" THANK YOU for asking this very pertinent question, protagonist! Her rationale to stay.... doesn't make much sense, unfortunately. Because the narrative (er, the servants) requires it!
