You were basically right with Joseph's step-mum having a not so legal business. She sells some phony products and likes to Mega-Karen complain and blackmail/gaslight the buyer and even Joseph to not tell anybody this

When he went home he was instantly kicked out by his bruised faced father, told to not come back until he and his wife get respect.

Confused, he contacted Charles who was like, "Dude, you beat your old man and that bitch a lot, how can you forget??"

Yeah he instantly went to the Kemonohito household very emotional

Joe was ready to apologize as soon as he saw Joseph but-

Joe was very confused by the sudden hug, even more when he didn't smell any weed on the man

"Thank you...you saved me from a life time of pain..."

As it turns out he really wanted to move out but was unable to due to his step-mum taking all his savings for her "business" and hobbies and now with them literally tossing him out he can make a move and have his own place. Of course he has to stay on the couch of Jac or Charles first but that's great!

Joe still apologized for the mess he made and offered to help Joseph move for free

Okay, how she found out was by strange reviews that didn't make sense about the diner

Stuff like how the staff was unfriendly and the fish was not cooked etc

After going to Sia they found out it's her OG family

just following the gut, Janice calls up Jane who quickly folds and apologizes severely

Unlike Joseph Janice was very pissed off and actually yelled at the poor girl before hanging up. She's not mad at what she did but more so...scared...

She sat down and explained it to her uncle who was like "Huh, that makes sense then..." after hearing about the swap

They both talked and Janice admitted she's actually scared of what her bio-family will do to them and Jane, how they controlled her life so much that now she will has to deal with there control again despite their asses being kicked to the moon and back

He calmed her down and she did call Jane to apologize for the yelling before and the two talked

Talking soon calmed with what they missed and also about their certain light hair cuties

"Maria asked you to the aquarium~" "Did she??" "Mmmmmmhm. But I told her "I" would be free this Friday." "You're awesome!" "I know~"

Janice's uncle blocked and banned the family from the diner's Yelp reviews and the diner itself while she went out with Maria the next day

May I please ask for headcanons on they the other version of the recruits react to mine?

Of course boo! I feel like a kid swapping baseball cards with a neighborhood kid

How they met was a random visit in the city by the gang, mostly for the siblings to find a place to perform and Jane Vera and Dante just followed to hang out, the same time when the friend group were in the city for college lessons and personal reasons

It gave them a heart attack by accident with this:

Joe sits at a small table with a drink as he relaxes for a bit and Jac walks over mostly covered in his red jacket with the hood up cause it's cold so Joe didn't notice right away, and Jac starts ranting about the cold and soon brings up a "hot babe" from a bar visit he went to and asked if wants details.

Joe goes pales and nervously and slowly getting angry ask "But what about Roxy?" In which Jac, assuming it's his best bud and referring to a chick previous said, "what about her?"

Luckily before Joe could sock this guy a new one Sia walks over with two cups of coffee and sat in front of them and starts complaining about a phone call with her boss' assistance (this world of Pan and Panic) who lost an important file

Jac and Sia talk back and forth and Joe slowly begins to question reality when Jac tries to convince Sia to go clubbing with her the weekend and how she needs to find a nice guy

Somewhere else in the building Jack is checking the sound when Joseph randomly sat beside him and said "Okay, so there's this cult documentary I watched last night right?" and just goes off on the documentary he was watching and complaining about his step-mom which is a normal vent which was a huge load of "whoa" on Jack

Then how it all tied together

Ivan was walking around and stopped by the vending machines and heard a voice a lot like Aya, now homeboy been crushing on her for a long time and been holding off letting those feelings known. So what he do? He goes over and starts talking until Zuri turns around and the two just stare at each other like "wtf"

Then Cece comes in while Sha comes in the same time and everyone's like "wait, wtf-"

So after gathering everyone introductions were made with Jack trying to be extra sure they were real and not magical beings like the recruiters, best not open that can of worms of the Disney Villain Recruiters just yet boo

Apologizes were made after everything

Wilhelm was mainly staring at Vince in per astonishment. He had similar features of his face but was obviously proud of his looks and not hiding him unlike himself, he was open with emotions when he wasn't, and not to mention Vince has a girlfriend when he barely dated. The two soon do bond over childhood stuff and books with Vince comfortable enough to show the guy a picture of Stephanie

Wilhelm scrunch his face u and said "Sorry. She just looks like Margaret" "Is she nice?" "She's a girl who lives in my building. We don't get along" Vince was just happy he hasn't met Apple Poison yet

Joseph was kind of taken aback at Joe in a way since he, like Vince, is open and not hiding like he is. The bond over the ocean and talk about Misty and Arielle together when they're away from others

Sia's first thought of Cece was she reminded her of her past self a bit. The two talk and as Sia soon mentioned her work and how she got a fancy ass home (she showed pictures) she was surprised to hear Cece offer to ruin her family's life with ease and bring even more damage to her ex-fiance. She simply grinned as they realized they're more similar than they seem and everyone can simply shutter in the idea of these two working together with Sia being Cece's main alibi if needed

Charles was amazed by Malachite. Like he has a band??? They talk about their life styles and Charles did his hardest to try and not tell Malachite his past but when it did he used way more physical power to make sure he won't go rampage

Aya adores Zuri to bits. Like tons of compliments and giggles. Like best friends imminently attached. Those two swap contacts with each other within the first 20 minutes of their talk. She just finds her so pretty and so happy she has a great life

Sha couldn't stop but find Nadia so pretty and so impressed by her boldness "So your dad lets your party?" "Uh, by dad you mean mom yeah." The two chat about being the younger ones of their groups and favorite activities and hobbies with Sha seeing more and more of the confidence she needs to grow through Nadia. Probably won't sleep with people much as she shows off the purity ring she had since she was 7 though she admitted to have dated and kissed before

Jac totally digs this Jack guy! They seemingly have a lot in common and Jack even got promises to have discounts at the diner he works at with Maria. There was a lot of apologies with Jac saying sorry about Jack maybe nearly kicking his ass kicked but assumption he's cheating on his girl

Janice was pretty much "wanna hang out?" with Jane and they two had a lot of deep nice conversations about life and their dads which Janice can't help but smiling hearing how nice her family sounds and how she luckily didn't have her childhood

Maria was more or less confused of Vera. Yes they had things in common, but she was... open of her feelings and her likes. There was no issue if she listens to rock music? She's open she's gay?? It honestly scared the poor girl more with the idea someone like her was worried all this time when it' isn't a big deal

Ivan fucking LOVES Dante man! They both talk about fashions, their moms, certain cute brown hair childhood besties in their lives

INTERVIEW: "Reflectif" Artists Reflect on Black Representation from their Upbringing

In one week, Lux Magna will have the pleasure of opening a month long art exhibit at Casa del Popolo, curated by local visual artists Kai Samuels and Joyce Joseph (a.k.a. JUICE); Reflectif is an exposition of art spanning various mediums, by 6 young Black artists coming from across the country.

Team member Mags (who is also a visual artist) spoke with Nafleri, Tyrin Kelly, Joseph Moore, Hasina Kamanzi (OTT), BlazenBlack (OTT) and Simone Heath (TO), about their respective experiences growing up with (or without) Black folk represented in the media and art that they consumed.

When was the first time you remember seeing Black folk represented in media or the arts?

Hasina: The first time I remember seeing Black people highlighted in media was when I went back to Burundi for the first time in 2014. I saw an oil painting exposition that was illustrating what life was like in Burundi pre-colonisation. I didn't realize at the time how influential it would be for me so, unfortunately, I can't recall what was the name of the artist or the name of the exposition.

Nafleri: Having grown up in Haiti, I was surrounded by Black people, so Carnival season was Black people and their joy put on a show. I knew whiteness existed but it was in light-skin Black [people] or missionaries; I wasn't fully aware how much opportunities catered to it. BUT, after arriving in Canada and being taught to be Black, around my second year, I remember TVA played films every Saturday, and during the week they would play the trailer for said movies; I remember once they played Fat Albert and all through out the week I was hype ‘cause it was movies with characters I felt I could relate to. I ended up being disappointed but, I still remember that child's hype. But in Haiti, I remember music, cinema, literature, paintings, sculptures, I wasn’t fully aware of it but I was lucky enough to experience Blackness in art.

Joseph: The first time that I remember seeing Black people represented within the media was The Proud Family. The show had a significant impact on my childhood, as it allowed for me to see various Black characters in a normalized and lighthearted setting on a regular basis.

BlazenBlack: Had to be the detective [Bulletproof] in the cartoon COPS, followed by X-Men’s Storm.

Simone: The earliest Black character I could remember is Susie Carmichael from Rugrats. Pinpointing a first time is hard to say for sure. I grew up in the late 90’s-early 2000’s with a lot of Black shows, a few having more Black-centric protagonists. I can remember watching The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Family Matters and The Cosby Show with my family.

Tyrin: I’m not sure… growing up I became really obsessed with the early jazz scene in America. It was drummers like Philly Joe Jones and Art Blakey that really inspired me to learn an instrument. K-OS is one of the first modern Black musicians that showed me you can make hip-hop and be a rock-star. I fell in love with Atlantis Hymns for Disco and really idolized that whole “B-Boy who makes indie music” persona. In terms of visual art I wasn’t really aware of Black artists that stuck to my memory until high school art class I think. I was really invested in the poetry scene in Ottawa during that time and Saul Williams is another Black artist that really influenced me.

2. Who was your favorite fictional Black character growing up?

Nafleri: Can I answer Jesus? (laughs) I remember reading (I know nada of Christian theology) that Jesus never wrote anything, his partners did, so in the writing of others, I'd see the fiction of Jesus, not that it's a bad thing, fictional characters can be inspirational but… uncles, aunties and ‘em might roast for that one. (laughs). Jokes aside though, growing up I remember Bouki and Malice, which were folk stories of Haiti and in the literary work of Odette Roy Fombrun. I was able to see Black characters that weren't asked to be super, they existed in the complexities of their life. Looking back, I'm grateful to have experienced that.

BlazenBlack: My favorite fictional Black character must have been Piccolo [DragonBall Z] if he counts. If not, War Machine [Iron Man franchise].

Hasina: Growing up, my favorite Black fictional character was Pamela (from the Tea Sisters book series) [Thea Stilton series in North America]. Technically, she's a mouse but she was also very anthropomorphic & born in Tanzania (like me!) so baby Hasina read her as Black.

Joseph: This is a hard question to answer as I can think of many favourites, but if I had to choose, it would be between Alyx Vance from the Half Life video game series or Michonne from The Walking Dead.

Tyrin: My favourite fictional Black character growing up was Radio Raheem from Do The Right Thing. Also Q from Juice. Foxy Brown was also so badass. Those three will forever be cool.

Simone: Probably Raven Baxter from That’s So Raven for a bit. I liked a lot of the outfits she would wear. She was multi-talented and funny.

3. What is your opinion on the current state of Black representation in Canadian media?

BlazenBlack: I don’t watch much Canadian TV, so I can’t speak on shows or movies, but in terms of animations, I can’t even name one off the top of my head. I'm hoping to change that.

Joseph: While I admit that I haven't been consuming as much Canadian media as I would like to as of late, I have found it harder to name many prominent or relatable Black characters within Canadian media off of the top of my head as opposed to American characters. While I appreciate Canada's willingness to represent many different cultures and viewpoints, it would be interesting to see something centered around the regular lives of Black people living in Canada on a larger platform.

Simone: Black representation in Canadian media could be a lot better. It feels as though it isn’t really there or pushed into the background as apart of Canadian diversity. Most of the Black media I consume is from the States. I don’t watch a lot of Canadian television, but from what I’ve seen I don’t recall any Black protagonists, usually side characters with little to no background. I feel like Black Canadian artists/athletes aren’t recognized until they have made something of themselves outside of the country. I’m grateful for people that reach out and organize events like this to have ourselves shown. I also have a lot to learn myself when it comes to being more active in these conversations and connecting with other Black Canadians.

Nafleri: I feel like I can't speak of Canadian media, though this stretch ocean to ocean I've only visited— I can't even say Toronto— Niagara Falls… once on a family trip. Quebec media however, having consumed a lot, hoping to fit in, I know for a fact, there is a big lack of representation. Though I stopped consuming QC media, late high school, my best friend studying in a theater institutions is closer to Quebec's media and we often discuss the lack of representation in his future field of work.

Tyrin: Um, I’m not sure it’s so black and white… if you’re looking at “credible” sources of media, yeah definitely a little convoluted. But in terms of independent media— media environments run by artists for artists— then I think it’s thriving and it’s all so cool! Like, looking at people I follow on social media or friends and peers that are making cool shit the list is giant. Definitely media representation is positive and important to an extent, and I think in Canadian media the effort is made, but that’s not what matters. What matters is honesty and published honesty is recognized in every format. I mean, shouts out to: Tau Lewis, Marvin Luvualu António, Moneyphone, Schwey, Elle Barbara, Tati au Miel, Neo Edo, Cole Craib, James Goddard, and all other Black artists who are doing their thing.

Hasina: There is a lot of work to be done but I'm hopeful because I see a lot of creatives doing great things both in Ottawa/Gatineau (where I live) and in Montreal.

Closing thoughts from co-curator JUICE

It's really cool how living Black is very different to other people. I always had this ideology that, because I was navigating spaces where there were a few Black children (or I was the only Black child) while growing up, meeting Black folks outside my environment meant that I could relate to them, just because they were Black. I wouldn't realize that our experiences could be different. Seeing how representation is so different but so important to each individual life, reminds me that, what ever they're doing creatively, you can do too, and you're not alone on the journey.

The first time I remember seeing Black folks was when my mother gave me a Spice Girl doll. Mel B (Melanie Brown) was the first Black doll I ever had and she had an Afro. She was the one doll I spent so much time on; I loved her so much. When I found out she was an actual person, I was shocked, and was interested in what she does, but I didn't have access to seeing what she did creatively (except on those celebrity TV talk shows when my mother would take me out to hair salons) . Later on growing up, I was into 1990's-2000's TV shows. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, My Wife and Kids, and Sister, Sister to name a few. Cartoons and anime were some other things I would watch when I would spend time with my siblings. Codename: Kids Next Door, Teen Titans and Bleach were a few of the earliest shows I would see Black characters. I would be extremely happy whenever they appeared on my screen. This only lasted during the years I moved and lived in Philadelphia. I moved back to Canada in 2008 and my spaces drastically changed. TV wasn't really the same after that.

The shows that depicted the Black characters I loved and enjoyed, weren't available in the country. Sometimes if they were, they would be 3-4 episodes behind from the American releases. At this point, I relied on the internet, or my brother’s video collections to air the shows I missed so much. Black representation was never really viewed as much as I was exposed to in the States. It became non-existent to me. The only time I would see a Black person in media or TV, is when a creative artist becomes popular, and outlets find out they're from Montreal. It was difficult to find representation growing up in this city, I always felt like we were side characters in our own adventures. People don't realize it but it does have an affect on people. It's nice to know that organizations are creating platforms for BIPOC representation, because we exist and we are not alone.

What about Soulmates AU? In which instead of first words you have full name of your soulmate tattooed on your skin. Web and Joe meet in the bar or a club and they're really into each other. They end up at someone's place before they even ask about names. They're halfway through heavy make out session and half naked when one of them notices their own name on the other' body.

This is so unlike him that a large part of David is convinced this can’t be happening.

He’s never been that sort of person. The one to attract stares in the middle of a crowded bar; the one to accept drinks other people buy him; the one to go home with a stranger when he doesn’t even know their name. He’s always thought himself better than that, more self-respecting -- more inhibited, if he’s being honest.

He’s never been the sort of person to slam a stranger up against the wall of his apartment and kiss him until he can’t feel his own lips.

His head is spinning. His heart is pounding. Every inch of his body feels like it’s burning up, and the man’s hands against his bare skin leave fire in their wake. The one inhibited, self-respecting part of him is screaming. His own euphoria -- heady and intense, the sort of thing David could get drunk on without the three tequila and lime shots in his system -- drowns it out. Everything is cast in a euphoric sort of haze. Sensation is intensified; everything is visceral, from the forcefullness of the stranger’s lips to David’s own demanding hands tugging the clothes off of them both.

He can’t think about morals, about reason, with this man pressed up against him. Ever since a flash of dark eyes caught his from the other side of the bar, he knew he was doomed.

“What’ll it be?” the bartender asked, leaning close enough that David could make out every curve of his immaculate bone structure, the dark hair hanging in his face, the purse of lips. His mouth dropped open, half-surprised and half-awed, but before he could answer, the man grinned. “No, wait -- I know just what you want.”

David’s never had tequila and lime in his life, but he downed what the bartender gave him just for the courage. It felt like a gift. When he caught sight of the man’s smirk, David slammed the empty shot glass down on the bar. “Well? I’ll have another.”

He’s not drunk, because if he were, that would be an excuse. He could hide behind his lack of self-control, blame it on irresponsibility and a momentary flash of not being himself. He’s not dreaming, because the tongue in his mouth is too real to be anything else. He hasn’t lost his mind, because he’s never felt so certain of anything in his life.

If David’s being honest, he’s not sure what he’s doing -- just that he’s thrown all inhibition to the wind, and it’s incredible.

“Oh god,” he groans out as the stranger nips at his jaw. His hands tighten in silky strands of dark hair as he guides that persistent mouth along. “There, yes, ohhh jesus --”

When the man pulls back for air, it feels like agony to David; but catching sight of that debauched smirk makes it a little more bearable. “You ever close your mouth?” he man rasps, and David huffs out a breath.

“Do you want me to?”

“Definitely not,” the man replies, and goes back in again.

David has his shirt off already, and is working on the buttons of that standard issue bartender uniform. The white shirt hugs his stranger’s form sinfully well; it almost feels like a sin to remove it. If losing his shirt is heresy, the sight of the man’s bare chest is a religious revelation. He is lithe, muscled in all the right ways, and David can’t help the gasp that escapes him.

The stranger’s lips pull away from the bruise they’re leaving on his shoulder to bare his teeth at him. “Is it too much?” he demands, an edge of mockery in his voice. “Should I sto--”

“Don’t fucking stop,” David hisses, hands tightening in his hair. The stranger lets out a noise like a stifled groan, and returns to work.

His mouth travels down David’s bare chest, leaving a bright red trail in his wake. David’s head hits the wall behind him; an unhindered groan escapes him. He’s so blinded by lust and euphoria that he doesn’t think about the words emblazoned on his hip, doesn’t care to remember -- until his stranger suddenly stops cold.

His mouth breaks away from David’s skin, leaving David feeling naked and exposed all at once. The stranger’s entire body recoils back; he stumbles away, eyes wide and affronted.

“What the fuck?”

“What?” David demands, barely able to form the word. His head is spinning; he hasn’t lost the rush of adrenaline, but the other man’s reaction has him alarmed. “What’s the matter?”

“Your skin.” The man runs a hand through his already-messed hair, debauching it further. David can see the whites of his eyes. “Is this some kind of joke?”

His eyes rove down to his soulmate mark -- the sharp, scribbled tattoo, JOSEPH LIEBGOTT emblazoned against his skin. David’s brow furrows in confusion. He frowns, not sure where he went wrong. It’s his soulmate mark. Everyone has them, even the man in front of him -- David can just make out the ink of a tattoo along his ribcage.

“It’s my soulmate,” he explains, taking a step forward. “I’ve never met the guy. What’s the big --”

The man in front of him twists, and David’s words die in his throat. The neat script of of DAVID K. WEBSTER across the stranger’s side matches his own handwriting to a tee.

It takes only a second for the world to drop out from under him; the next moment is spent scrambling to regain his footing. “I - I -- that’s my --”

“You’re mine,” the man named Liebgott hisses. He sounds as accusatory as he does shaken. “You’re my soulmate, and I’m --”

“Yours.” David feels like he wants to cry. He’s not sure if he’s relieved or despairing. He’s pictured his soulmate many different times, with many different faces, but his imagination has never conjured anything like the man in front of him. He is utterly unexpected, and he’s not sure how to feel about this stranger he is apparently destined for.

“Oh my god,” Liebgott moans, pressing a hand to his head. “I just thought you were hot!”

“So did I,” David blurts without thinking. Then, as the man’s words set in: “I was going to be a one-night stand?!”

“Oh my god,” Liebgott says again. David runs a hand over his jaw and lets out a delirious laugh.

It’s not long before all the humor fades from the situation, replaced by something tense, heavy enough to cut with a knife. The ties between them are undeniable; they cannot ignore the attraction, magnetic and forceful, pulling them back towards each other. David catches Liebgott’s eyes and feels his breath catch in his throat. There is a bruise on Liebgott’s neck, scratches running down his bare arms. Liebgott’s saliva is still drying on his neck.

“We don’t have to stop,” David says after a moment. Liebgott shakes his head.

“No. We don’t.”

They remain still for another moment, the pulse of silence drowning out their heavy breaths. David isn’t sure who makes the first move, but suddenly he is back in Liebgott’s arms. A mouth if pressing at his with intense force, his hands are back in Liebgott’s hair, and there is friction against the front of his pants as Liebgott grinds against him.

David knew he should have listened to his instincts about taking a stranger home -- but in this moment, in the arms of his soulmate, he can’t bring himself to care.
