@crownslip said: "i'll follow you to the bitter end; as i always have." ( leslie shay )
her presence alone is enough to compensate for the lack of warmth that currently occupies his hollow chest. the liquor isn't doing a very good job at filling that void, but he can always count on her to remedy that all on her own. kelly isn't a natural - born pouter; he much prefers working, pushing himself through the shit times so hard that he'll be completely blind to his problems when he haphazardly emerges on the other side. but even he has his days.
Tumblr media
lips curl, toothy grin forming on a tired face. a chuckle slips past his lips, and he finally dares to lift his head from where it's been hanging over their island counter top for the last hour. "that shakespeare or somethin'?" he questions playfully, turning his head to lock gazes with her. he finds home within her eyes, comfort and familiarity that few other people have ever provided him with.
"shay - speare," he blurts out after a moment, draping an arm around the blonde's shoulders to draw her in closer. sides bump, lopsided smile growing. "that was good, wasn't it? just came up with that." he boasts, thumb running across the fabric of her shirt absentmindedly. a brief pause, smile fading in favor of a more genuine expression not masked by his usual charisma. "i really appreciate you, y'know that?" he asks quietly. "dunno what i'd do without you."

Hi! Would you maybe do a fic where the reader tells Kelly he’s going to be a dad? Super cute and fluffy and very excited Kelly.
Baby Severide
Warning: morning sickness/ vomiting, lots of fluff
Authors note: sorry it took so long to get this posted! I just haven’t had the spark to write in a while. Hope you enjoy!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two days prior to the announcement:
You woke next to Kelly like you do every day. The sun was just shining in and the cool breeze was rustling the curtains. You had nowhere to go today, so you weren’t entirely sure why you were awake. Kelly had canceled everything for the day since you had woken up sick two days in a row and were left feeling awful for most of the day. You soon realized why you were awake.
You untangled yourself from the sheets and shoved Kelly’s arm to the side as you ran for the bathroom. You barely made it in time when your stomach gave in. You had a white knuckle grip on the tank, sobbing as the next wave came up, when Kelly ran in.
“Oh baby.” Kelly sighed sympathetically. He grabbed your wash rag and wet it before coming to pull you down to your knees. “Shhhhhh. Just let it out. You are doing so good.” Kelly soothed, laying the cloth on the back of your neck.
You blindly reached for him, sobbing and hyperventilating as you tried to stop the vomiting. “K-hurk” you tried to call out his name, but a harsh retch cut you off.
“Sh sh sh. Don’t talk. Just focus on breathing baby girl.” Kelly said, taking your hair away from your face and gently rubbing your back as you gripped his pajama pants.
The episode lasted for about 10 minutes before you were finally able to pull away. You fell into Kelly’s arms with a sob. You hate throwing up and have now thrown up three days in a row. You don’t know what’s wrong.
“I gotcha. I gotcha.” Kelly shushed, slightly rocking back and forth. “Shhhhh. It’s okay Angel. You feeling better?” He hummed, kissing your sweaty forehead. You rose your hand and tilted it side to side in response.
“Think your done for now?” Kelly asked, leaning back a little to see your face. You nodded and Kelly smiled at you. “Okay baby girl. Up you go.” Kelly said, pushing you back just enough to stand and then pull you into his arms.
Kelly stopped to let you wash your mouth out a few times and blow your nose. He checked your temp for the third day in a row and hummed at the thermometer. It just couldn’t be right.
“Welp. No fever again baby.” Kelly said, rubbing your sides as you sat on the bathroom counter. “Ready to crawl back in bed or do you want a shower?” Kelly asked, standing between your legs still.
“Bed first. Nap. Shower later.” You said, laying out your plan.
Kelly laughed and lifted you up. “Yes ma’am.” He said, kissing the side of your head before he deposited you onto the bed.
Hours later, you woke to a note from Kelly saying he was going to go help Matt do something and stop by the store. Assuming he’d be back around the time he specified, which was suppose to be 6 pm, you called Kim Burgess.
“Burgess.” Kim answered on the third ring.
“Hey Kim. It’s Y/n. Are you busy at the moment?” You asked, knowing that since it was 4 pm, she could be on the job.
“Nope. Just wrapped up a case. What’s up?” Kim asked, continuing to pack up for the day.
“I need a huge favor. Like, I need this to stay between us until I know for sure.” You said, twisting the sheets in your hands anxiously. You had an idea of what the problem was, now that this had been going on for three days in a row, but you did not feel well enough to leave home.
“I already know. I’ll be there in 20.” Kim said, hanging up.
You chuckled, knowing your best friend probably knew before you did.
Now:
As you suspected, Kim figured out you were pregnant before you or Kelly did. You knew that Kelly didn’t have a clue since he was pretty adamant about not going on shift yesterday, but you promised that you would call him if you needed him and would check in regularly. Since he left, you and Kim had been working on your little announcement.
When Kelly got home the morning after his shift, he was pleasantly surprised to find you sitting on the couch. You had on a red hoodie that he did not recognize, a pillow hugged to your stomach, as you sipped on some coffee.
“Hey sweetheart.” Kelly called, smiling as he eyed you.
You grinned. “Hey handsome. Come join me.” You said, setting your coffee to the side and moving the bag that you had next to you.
Kelly slide into his place, pulling you into his side. “Feeling any better?” He whispered, planting a kiss on your temple.
“About that.” You said, grinning. “I have some news.” You handed Kelly the bag from Walgreens and removed the pillow as he peaked inside. You held back a laugh at his confused face.
“Do we know…” he started to say, pulling out the little firefighter boots, but stopping short as he read your hoodie. “Newest member of squad three.” He read, a smile blossoming on his face as he looked to where the arrow was pointing at your stomach. “Oh my God!” Kelly yelled, grinning from ear to ear. “Are you serious?!”
You nodded, grinning like a fool as tears rolled down your face. “Your gonna be a daddy Kel.” You whispered, voice choked with tears of joy.
Kelly started chuckling and pulled you into a hug. “Baby. This is the best day of my life.” Kelly practically sang, leaning back to look at you, then leaning down to your belly. “Hey fire cracker. It’s your daddy and I am soooo happy you are going to be ours.” Kelly whispered, kissing your stomach.
You held a hand over your mouth, refusing to sob at the sight in front of you. You knew Kelly would be excited, especially given the way he reacted when he held your nephew for the first time.
“How long?” Kelly asked, kissing you quickly.
“Nat says I’m 7 weeks. I just never thought about it since I’m so irregular, but I saw her yesterday after I got a positive home test.” You explained, wiping happy tears from Kelly’s face as he did the same for you.
“When can we tell everyone?!” Kelly asked, practically jumping in his seat.
You chucked, so happy that he was happy. “Whenever your ready.”
Ben was at the wedding but I found it so strange that he didn’t have one line. He wasn’t even dancing with Griffin and the rest of 51 at the reception. In fact, I don’t think I even saw him at the reception.
Also, Brett’s parents were there. K*ra hand picked them because she knows the couple in real life and is close to them. Again, thought it was weird it wasn’t mentioned. I thought it was odd that her dad didn’t even walk her down the aisle. Brett is very much a traditional person in my opinion so I honestly thought her dad walking her down the aisle was something she would have wanted. I thought it was so random for Brettsey to walk down the aisle together.
And on the subject of her parents, how come her DAD didn’t have wear a boutonniere (flower) on his suit? You’re telling me that Casey, Severide and Boden had one on but the DAD OF THE BRIDE didn’t get one? I also think it’s funny the Cindy and Herrmann sat in the front row while Brett’s parents sat behind them.
Oh I didn't know Sylvie's parents were actually there. Well, I'm even more pleased with the wedding now.
Still, I am sad that we didn't get Sylvie's dad walking her down the aisle. I mean, it was very cute with Brettsey walking with each other, especially as I very much like the imagery of that, but in my most perfect want for the brettsey wedding, I would've wanted Sylvie's dad to walk her down because I truly believe that is what she would've wanted.
I'm also a little bit more sad at it because, as you said, them not sitting front row is a little weird and imo not in-line with Sylvie's personality at all, and with him not wearing the boutonniere just really underlines how they kinda missed the mark with some things about the wedding.
I get, obviously, why. It's a show first and foremost and they're going to prioritise their characters, and Sylvie's parents is just really not on their list of priorities. Still, it's a little disappointing, especially with how I believe Sylvie (and honestly Matt) would want her wedding to be.
Overall, I think the wedding was beautiful, but I do think some things were rushed/overlooked - whether that's because of writing, directing, because of budgets or timing, I can't say.
Thank you for asking!!!
It's been a while since any of the three shows had done a death storyline for their major characters which always makes me a little more nervous (especially since we know they're all about that drama lol). So, who do you think, from each of the three shows, they would/could potentially k!ll off?
This season? I’m going with this season, otherwise it’s just way too broad.
Med: full up I’ve watched like 2 eps of Med this season. So as complete shot in the dark and knowing nothing that’s going on I’m gonna say Archer. I think he was having renal issues in the episodes I did watch and those can go from ‘yeah you’re good’ to ‘Holy Shit!’ like that 🫰🏼.
Fire: Not getting a real sense of anyone dying this season to be honest. But if Taylor’s leave has become a permanent exit it would a “clean” way of writing Severide out.
PD: Again getting life in peril vibes for Adam but not actual death. If they were going to kill anyone this season (again not really vibes I’m getting) I’d go with Torres. It might not be the most impactful for the audience, but it could be for the characters. Plus I really think the licking he put on that gang leader is going to come back to bite him in the ass, so maybe that happens in 21.
A/N: I hope this hits the spot, anon! Happy reading!
-
It's a Tuesday morning, which in itself is nothing special or consequential. However, the feeling of three pairs of curious eyes on you and Kelly is something you make note of.
You're on the couch in the common room, facing towards the dining table with your feet in Kelly's lap. He's facing towards the TV also with a puzzle book in his possession, completely oblivious to the neighborhood watch from across the room.
You try to keep your head in your sudoku but from the periphery of your vision, the childlike gossiping and whispering is a major distraction. You sigh, flick your book to a blank back page and tear a piece off. Using the book itself to lean on as you write quickly, you slip the piece of paper onto the page of Kelly's puzzle book.
It reads: "Don't react. We're being watched. They still think we're together." Complete with crude doodles of the eye-roll emoji and laughing emoji.
Kelly's eyes light up with mischief as he reads the last line, mouth up turning into a smirk. He glances at you, not giving the prying watchers any of his attention.
In a hushed tone, gentle and sweet, Kelly speaks,
"I'm just gonna get a cup of coffee, you want one?"
The question is said in a way that is supposed to feign a private conversation, but ultimately Kelly knew he'd be heard.
You can’t help yourself, the mischievous nature is infectious. Playing along, rubbing his shoulder gently.
"That would be amazing, thanks."
The eyes watch curiously, looking for any giveaway that you were, in fact, a couple. One thing to note was that Kelly hadn’t used a term of endearment, and though you had touched his shoulder you were prone to being quite tactful with everyone - thus the onlookers could only conclude a touch to the shoulder, to show thanks, was hardly a lewd public act.
You swing your feet off Kelly’s lap and go back to doing your sudoku, playing it as cool as possible. Listening intently as Kelly putters about in the kitchen area, making coffee for the both of you.
One member of your audience pipes up. “Any for us, Lieutenant?”
“If you get up and make it, yeah.” He barely even glances at the owner of the voice, Otis, remaining stoic as he brings you your coffee and settles back down with your feet in his lap once more.
The small chorus of frustrated sighs makes you want to laugh. Their curiosity and misery would be over if they just asked.
But that would ruin their betting pool.
Herrmann and Joe are the other two in Otis' three, the ringleaders that had the whole firehouse placing bets on when you and Kelly would actually explicitly confirm your ‘togetherness’, as well as when the chief would ask you both to declare it officially as a romantic interpersonal relationship.
Casey, who happens to be passing by to get to the Chief's office, shakes his head at the three men watching you like meerkats over a parapet, chuckling at you and Kelly who were clearly making the most of the fun.
-
It’s late in the afternoon when Otis, Joe, and Herrmann get their next opportunity to make the bust. They, rightfully, think they’ve hit the jackpot as a courier turns up with a bouquet of flowers and a set of heart-shaped cupcakes, addressed to you. Surely this would be the moment the little card attached would read "Love, Kel" or "Love, K" and all would be revealed.
Oh, how easy that would be.
You were well aware of their eagerness to snoop, and so it was no mistake when you got up to put the flowers next to your bunk that you left the greeting card behind.
“To my sweet, Y/N. You are so beautiful, and I’m so proud of who you are. Thank you for being my-” There’s a pause in Joe’s reading, Otis and Herrmann look on in anticipation, “-… amazing little sister. Love, your big sister.”
There's a chorus of groans, the onlookers in the common room who also had their stakes in the betting pool just as disappointed as the three huddled around the piece of paper.
The card gets tossed angrily across the table, each of them huffing as they leave the common room to get some fresh air outside the app floor.
Elsewhere, you’re sitting on Kelly’s bed in his quarters, giggling quietly with him.
“I bet they were so excited when they saw that delivery. I gotta get my sister something as thanks.” You grin, winking at Kelly.
“I love this game.” Kelly snorts.
“Me too, dude. Me too.” You sigh happily, teasing your friends was just too easy. Leaning back against Kelly’s pillow, opening to the chapter in your book, as Kelly starts on some paperwork.
-
The shift passes without further incident, a string of calls takes you and Kelly away from your leisurely activities and the three musketeers have no further hopes of collecting evidence at work that day.
So, they put their hopes into the idea that it would come down to cracking the case at Molly’s later that evening.
You and Kelly are sitting with Matt and Sylvie enjoying drinks and some snacks, laughing about the latest in the Firehouse witch hunt for your relationship with the Lieutenant.
You take a sip of your cocktail, nudging Kelly in the ribs with a grin.
“I heard Tony placed a new bet with Capp that the Chief would ask about it next shift.”
Sylvie taps her finger on the table excitedly, getting your attention as she's mid-swallow of a mouthful of chips, enjoying the thrill of this high stakes game,
“And Mouch -as got it pl-aced in a week from'now.” You laugh at Sylvie's garbled speech, the message clear enough.
Casey shakes his head, amused, shrugging, “I was in a meeting with him this morning, he did ask about you and this guy, but I said I didn’t know.”
Kelly chuckles, patting Matt on the back. “That’s my buddy. Keep it up.”
A few more rounds in, and you’re listening to a story Sylvie is telling about one of her childhood mishaps involving a pig and torrential rain at the county fair when you catch the conspirators huddled around Herrmann at the bar. Your lips curve into amusement, taking the moment to wrap your arm around Kelly and lean against his shoulder.
Matt raises an eyebrow, and Sylvie briefly pauses her talking,
“Don’t look, they’re watching. Just roll with it. Sylvie don't you dare leave me hanging, carry on and tell me about what Mrs. Kitchner did once the pig got into the jam tent.”
Sylvie makes a face that says "You are not going to believe what that woman did." and proceeds to continue her tale. Kelly glances at you, giggling as he kisses your forehead. You hum contentedly, Kelly was still a great pillow even if he wasn’t your boyfriend but a best friend.
Over at the bar, Capp is not shy about spying on your table,
“A forehead kiss… what the crap, man. How are we supposed to know?”
“She’s snuggled right up to him, that’s gotta be proof!” Mouch grumbles.
Otis sighs, swirling his beer in his bottle. He hates to be the voice of reason when winnings are at stake, but he has to play fair. “You know damn well Y/N's a cuddler, and Kelly and Shay were just as close like that. It doesn’t mean anything.”
Mouch nods disappointedly, going back to the paper he had been reading.
Herrmann takes in the forlorn sight of his friends, shaking his head in incredulity. He loved a bet as much as the next person, but it wasn't the end of the world. He taps a glass on the counter, getting their attention. “Alright, break it up. You can’t gawk at them all night. And you yahoos need to buy some beer rather than taking up my bar space!”
-
It's your next shift when Mouch falls victim to the evergrowing hubbub surrounding this particular rumour. He had been sucked into the quest for the 'truth'. He was sitting on his bunk, glasses at the tip of his nose whilst perusing through some Union Rep paperwork, when he heard a most peculiar sound. Coming from the direction of Kelly's quarters no less.
Placing the folder to the side, pushing his glasses back onto his face, he silently stands up, creeping toward Kelly's door. He strains his ears, listening.
"Kelly, ah! Stop wiggling like that, you're hurting."
"I'm not wiggling, you're squirming. How's it jammed in so tight?"
"Please just move it already, it's putting my nerves on edge."
Mouch's face falls into a deep frown, trying to figure out what he's listening to. Then, his eyes pop open with realisation on his face.
Immediately moving to find Herrmann.
“Mouch, what are you doing listening to Kelly’s door anyway?” Herrmann frets, walking alongside his best friend.
“I wasn’t! They were being loud.” Herrmann sighs, carefully approaching to look out for any more sounds.
There’s a beat of silence before your voice is heard again,
“Ah, Kelly! Twist there, that’s it… no, no! Ah, you’re pulling too much.”
Herrmann snatches his body back from the door and stares at Mouch. He shrugs in an “I told you so.” kind of gesture.
There's movement from behind the pair and they turn to find Joe and Otis approaching with curiosity.
“What’s happening?” There's an unspoken acknowledgment that they should keep talking in hushed whispers as they come to join the older men spying.
“We think they're uh… doing 'it',” Mouch says hesitantly. Joe’s and Otis’ eyes light up with excitement and somehow disgust at the same time. Herrmann grimaces, for a multitude of reasons.
“Severide can’t be as good as the reputation might suggest, she seems very uncomfortable. This is an invasion of their privacy, we should go.”
Otis snorts, "Their privacy? Herrmann, my man, they're at work, besides-"
Back in the room, you’re squirming under Kelly’s touch, Kelly sighs.
“I’m gonna try and get something to lubricate it, maybe it’ll slide right out that way.”
You nod, lips pursed in irritation and pain. Grumbling as you patiently wait for Kelly to find a solution.
Outside the room, before the stalkers can even react to the words “Get something to lubricate”, the door opening startles the hovering troupe, and they all jump back in terror.
Kelly’s face falls into a scowl, pointing at Otis. Seemingly oblivious to the others.“You!”
Wild-eyed Otis points at himself. “Me? What's wrong with me?”
“Oh I'm so glad you asked, Brian, your stupid robot freaked out on Y/N and she’s got a piece of it stuck in her hair!”
At which point Kelly stalks off to find Sylvie, some conditioner to use on your hair, and hopefully a hairbrush. Otis winces at the use of his actual name, "Brian" around here usually meant he was in trouble.
Kelly's blustering exit leaves the dumbfounded group to peek sheepishly into the room where you remained. You're glancing at the doorway, one hand holding your hair and your head, the other clenched into the blanket on Kelly's bed. You’re sat with a piece of machinery tangled in your hair, looking to be in pain and thoroughly done with this day.
“Y/N, what happened?” Herrmann asks, concerned.
You glance at Otis, and you can see he gulps, which in any other circumstance would make you laugh but your scalp was hurting. “Otis’ robot thought I was a threat, it tried to extinguish me and then a piece came flying off from the pressure of the extinguish feature and it basically catapulted into my hair. It won’t come out.”
Joe smacks Otis upside the head and Otis has the good grace to look remorseful.
“I’m so sorry, Y/N. I’ll mail it back as soon as possible.”
You wave your hand away, "It's a bitch, but I know it was an accident. Just make sure it's gone, or Chief's gonna lose his shit."
"Yes, Chief is." The authoritative voice doesn't even have to be loud to make all of you jump, the boys spin round to see the Chief with his hands on hips in his usual stance, taking in the pathetic sight of you and your hair. Having done nothing wrong you still can't help but feel like you're in trouble.
Herrmann and Mouch move aside to let Boden further into the room, "You alright, Y/N?"
You smile weakly, "Yeah, Chief. Just a freak accident. Kelly's getting Sylvie and some supplies to solve it."
At that moment Sylvie makes herself known, Kelly in tow, she's holding a conditioner, a hairbrush, and a comb. "Cavalry's here." Her voice is worried but also laced with amusement and you can't help giggling at the stupidity of this whole thing too.
As Sylvie comes to sit by your side and work through the mess of your hair and the bits of robot that are stuck, Kelly shoos everyone else out of the room. As they usher out, you can hear Chief demanding that Otis get that 'godforsaken thing' out of his Firehouse immediately.
Leaving Mouch, Herrmann, and Joe with a Lieutenant who eyes them suspiciously with folded arms outside his door.
"Why were you outside my door?"
There's silence from the worried faces in front of Kelly, they really don't want to piss him off anymore.
"We, uh..." Herrmann starts.
"I thought you were having sex!" Mouch blurts out.
Kelly blinks. Face unreadable.
The Lieutenant makes a show of clenching his jaw, appearing to be pissed off. "Excuse me?"
"I-... Y/N was making a lot of noise, then I heard "tight", "that's it" and "just move" and I just..." Mouch is flushed pink with regret at a) Ever thinking you and Kelly were doing it and b) for giving such a detailed explanation on his thought process. Joe's holding his face in secondhand embarrassment.
There's more silence, and then Kelly's face cracks as his body starts to shake with laughter. Uncontrollable burbles of belly laughter as he ducks his head into his room, to see you and Sylvie both trying to stifle your hysterics.
"You heard that?"
Sylvie nods, "Yeah, Kelly. We-...We heard! Hahahaha!"
You're holding your stomach, trying to breathe through laughter. "Oh my god, OH MY GOD. Hahaha, Mouch. Poor Mouch. This betting pool's got them so messed up."
It's Herrmann's and Joe's faces that duck around the doorway next, simultaneously questioning,
"Betting pool?!"
"You know about this?!"
You and Sylvie have the good grace to look a little sheepish, but really it served them all right for snooping into your and Kelly's business.
You snort, keeping still as Sylvie keeps brushing with an amused expression. "Yes, of course, we knew about the betting pool. We've known about it for weeks."
"You've been playing us?" Joe looks hurt, only encouraging more giggles.
"We have, bud. And really well too." Kelly claps him on the shoulder, looking victorious.
Mouch gets over his confession, querying the other thing on his mind.
"So you aren't together?"
"Nope." Kelly shrugs.
"Negative." Your face is absolutely neutral, it was clear you were telling the truth.
"Oh come on, you gotta be kidding, you two are like-" Herrmann gestures, crossing fingers together.
"Yeah, we are. But as friends."
"So you didn't sleep together?" Otis has come back from his disposal duties.
Sylvie untangles the last few strands of hair, you breathe a sigh of relief and give her a side hug. Smiling at your rediscovered freedom. You stand and jab Otis in the chest playfully.
"Not that it's any of your business, but yes we slept together, it was great, duh, but we decided friendship was better for us. That cover everything now?"
Kelly is eyeing them all, with that look that unequivocally means "No more talking about this",
Joe steers Otis out the door, dragging Herrmann and Mouch with them, calling back to you and Kelly, Sylvie still thrilled about the revelations. "Yep, all covered. Thanks for the talk. We'll leave you to it."
Chief did ask about your interpersonal relationship with Kelly later that day, the others dared not try and cash in on that part either. You both did indeed reassure him that it was purely platonic. Satisfied that there was nothing to be made aware of, he let you be.
It took the others another week to fully shake their conspiracy, but as time passed they started to believe that what you and Kelly had was comfortable and close in the most unassuming of ways.
It wasn't until Capp very brazenly brought up a new betting stake at Molly's one night that a new pool began.
"So, are we gonna start guessing when they'll sleep together again?"
Tony smacks him upside the head, shaking his own in disapproval.
Everyone scoffs at Capp as if to say "Come on, man."
But as shenanigans are prevalent at Firehouse 51, your friends all start sidling up to Capp, starting with Otis one by one they all approach to input their guess.
A hand grips Capp's shoulder, he turns to see your face. Making him flinch, thinking he was about to be in some big trouble.
You lean in, speaking in a hushed tone. "I'll cut you in on the bet that it'll happen this weekend when we go hiking."
Capp grins. "Sold."
You wink, slinking back to Kelly, Jay, and Will at your table. Linking arms with your not-boyfriend and resuming the conversation.
“I’ve got to go.” The words woke you up from your comfortable sleep, and you turned around to see Kelly getting dressed on his side of the bed. Checking your watch, it was 4.30.
“Kelly, come back to bed. You’ve got your work bag in your car, you can drive in from here.” You reached over for him but he stood, shucking on his jeans.
“I’ve some stuff to get from the loft. Want me to make coffee?”
“Yeah.”
You wrapped a hoodie around you, walking out to your small kitchen. Kelly was already fixing your small coffeemaker. The tension was thick in the air, and you decided to just bite the bullet.
“Kelly...why do we have to keep hiding this? I’m tired of being kept a secret. I know at the start we said this was just sex, but you stay the night, we make out, it’s not that anymore. God Cruz is running bets on us. So why can’t we admit it?” His shoulders stiffened underneath the worn leather, and you readied yourself for the argument.
“We’re not dating. I thought this was still just sex. That’s all I’m here for. Look, I’m gonna go. See you on shift.”
You watched as Kelly as good as ran out of the one bedroom apartment, and felt your heart break in two. Once you were sure he wasn’t in hearing distance, you let out a sob.
With your shift rapidly approaching you gave yourself an hour to cry before you got ready. The coffee Kelly had made was unceremoniously thrown down the drain, and you left without eating anything. Your stomach was in too many knots to eat anyway.
Your red eyes were covered in colour correcting concealer, and you arrived into the house with your head up high, waving at your friends. Keeping the facade going was easy until Sylvie pulled you into the rig, shutting the doors behind her.
“What happened? You’re not ok.” You looked at the woman who was your best friend, work partner and PIC and wanted to laugh. Plus she was engaged to Kelly’s best friend, you couldn’t tell her the truth.
“I’d been seeing someone. We said it was casual but then he was staying over most nights, so I asked him should we make it public. He told me he didn’t feel the same way and left. It all happened this morning so I’m not ok right now.”
Sylvie wrapped you in a hug, holding you close to her chest. “You deserve better, you know? After work I’ll come back with you, we can get takeout and watch break up movies and drown our sorrows in ice cream.”
You smiled at that, banishing the tears from your eyes. “Thanks, Sylvie.” You opened the doors and stepped out in search of breakfast. Instead though, you nearly ran into Kelly’s chest.
“I was looking for you, can we talk?” He asked, his voice soft.
Ambulance 61, person in distress, 3365 South Island
“Sorry Lieutenant, duty calls.” You ran to the passenger side, not trusting yourself to drive first thing. Sylvie wasn’t far behind you, and in thirty seconds you were pulling out of the fire house and to your first call of the day.
You had back to back calls, and by the time you and Sylvie made it back to the house you were starving. Truck and Engine were out on their own calls, so you went inside to try rustle up something edible until somebody made lunch.
“I left plates for you in the fridge,” Kelly said, walking into the common room and you and Sylvie surveyed the available food.
“Thanks, K-Severide,” you replied, cutting yourself off from saying his first name. He’d made it perfectly clear what you were.
After food you could restock the ambo and relax for a little while, being polite and friendly to everyone, but still trying to stay on your own. Kelly had come up to you twice, but each time you stuck with your grey rock routine, making things easier for you.
When your shift ended you were one of the first out of the house, waving goodbye quickly as you speed walked away. Kelly lifted up his arm to call you as you got into your car, but you were able to ignore him without looking like you were. Once you arrived home you locked the door behind you, giving yourself 24 hours to be heartbroken.
True to her word, Sylvie arrived around two with Stella in tow. They took one look at you and wrapped you in hugs, settling in on the couch with the patented list of feel good movies you’d created over the years. You were starting Made of Honor when you were able to speak.
“I really thought I loved him. We started as friends, and there was a spark, so we were friends with benefits. But we slept over, and I think he’s spent more nights here in the last two months than his apartment. The only nights we were apart was work. But he just kept calling it friends with benefits. I just miss him.” You dissolved back into tears, curling up with your friends. Stella patted your head as Sylvie rubbed your shoulders. You felt like such a fool. How could you have convinced Kelly Severide to settle down?
They convinced you to eat something, so pizza was ordered and you waited for it to arrive. When the buzzer went off you didn’t hesitate to hit the entry button, and Sylvie opened the door when the delivery guy got there.
“It’s not a good time, Kelly. We’re having girls night. She needs her girls. See her on shift.” You kept yourself still, not wanting him to see the mess he’d put you in.
“Sylvie I need to see her. Right now. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t important.” You could hear the worry in his voice and it nearly broke you, clutching tighter to Stella. You felt her shake her head no, but hadn’t heard the question.
“No chance, Kelly. Go home. I’ll let her know you were here.” She shut the door on him, before coming back to the couch, your tears back in full force.
“It was Kelly, wasn’t it?” Stella’s voice was low, and you nodded, sitting up.
“What kind of idiot am I? I thought we might actually have something. I’m a fool.”
“You’re not a fool. You were in love. And judging from his face he’s realised what he’s lost, but that’s his fault.” The buzzer went again, and Sylvie lifted it this time.
“Yes?”
“Pizza?”
It arrived up, the cheese and grease what was needed. By the time Stella and Sylvie left you were smiling, hugging them goodbye.
The time before your shift was spent in a cleaning frenzy. You didn’t want anything in your apartment to remind you of what you’d lost, so you cleaned it all, flipping your mattress and changing bedding to completely forget.
By the time you arrived in 51 you felt like a new person. You smiled as you walked in, and it felt like a real smile. Even Sylvie noticed as she and Matt walked in, giving you brief hugs hello. You’d pulled your hair back and were ready to take on the day, but when you closed your locker door Kelly was standing there.
“We need to talk,” his voice was soft, and when you looked at him he seemed like he hadn’t slept.
“You said everything you needed to, Severide. We’re coworkers. That’s it. And considering paramedics and Squad don’t tend to interact, we don’t need to unless we’re on a call.” You turned and walked into the briefing room, sitting beside Sylvie at your usual seat. You stared at the board, ignoring everyone who came in.
“Severide looks like hell,” Sylvie murmured, and you looked at her.
“No idea why,” you replied as Boden walked in to update everyone on the latest information. Before it ended the bells went, and you and Sylvie went to leave.
“I mean what I said, he looks like hell. Have you talked to him?” You kept your eyes on the road as you drove to the call location, but Sylvie was excellent at waiting out a silence.
“He asked me this morning, but nothing since. He has my number, he hasn’t called or texted me since that night. If he wanted to talk he could. But I can’t wait for him, I need to at least pretend to move on. For my sanity.”
“Ok. But I’m here if you need moral support?” You smiled at her as you arrived at the call, but your face immediately paled at the sight in front of you.
The two of you had done all you could, but the staff at Med called TOD on your patient shortly after you arrived. He was a fifteen year old kid, out walking a dog when he got caught in a drive by shooting. You were both covered in blood on arrival back to 51, and Sylvie took you out of service so you could shower and change before another call. By the time you were cleaned up you felt better, but your heart was heavy as you came into the common room and got breakfast.
“You gals ok?” Capp called over, and you smiled at him.
“Tough call. Seeing you all helps though!” You replied, taking a bite of your bacon. There was a laugh, and you all settled into your groups to eat. Before long things turned and the bells went.
Squad 3, Ambulance 61, car accident, 17th and Ashland
You and Sylvie nodded at each other, jogging to the rig. Squad were also on their way out, and you were in convoy on the short drive. It was just one car, but the driver had hit a tree and was wrapped around. It didn’t look like a fire risk, but you stood back as Squad worked to get him out.
Just as Kelly had a saw to the side of the car, you heard the squeal of brakes. You turned and watched as everyone ran out of the way, but Kelly tripped, his torso hitting the still spinning blade as he ran. On autopilot you ran to him, putting pressure on the long gash.
“Stay awake, Kelly. Stay up.” You told him, hearing Sylvie over the radio that we needed two more ambulances and some reinforcements to the location. Kelly grabbed your shoulder, but before he could say anything his eyes rolled.
“Wake up! Don’t do this to me!” You yelled, but he didn’t stir. Squad helped get him onto the gurney and Sylvie held him in the back as you drove to Med, sirens blaring and lights flashing as you made your way through Chicago.
Once you arrived Kelly was handed over, and you stood in shock, staring at the trauma room he’d been brought to. You didn’t even know you were crying until Sylvie wrapped her arm around you, pulling you into a hug.
“It’s Kelly. He’ll be ok. We won’t lose him.” You stayed still until she brought you to the waiting room. The rest of the house arrived soon after, and you took over a sizeable area of the room. You and Sylvie were surrounded by the Squad guys, the five of you just sitting in silence. Capp grabbed your hand, the only movement any of you made while you waited. There’d been so much blood at the scene, all you could think of was Kelly’s blood pouring out and for all of your training you couldn’t stop it. You couldn’t stop him from being hurt.
“He’s gonna pull through. It’s Kelly. Plus he needs to talk to you.” You turned to look at Capp, unsure you’d heard him. “He told me he screwed up with someone important to him, and I’m guessing how the two of you acted it was with you?”
You nodded, a lump in your throat. “Yeah, before last shift. We had a fight, and I was upset so didn’t want to talk to him. God if that’s our last words...” You covered your lips with your fingers. If the last thing you’d told Kelly was you didn’t need to interact again you wouldn’t be able to cope. He was so much more than just that.
“He knows. He knows.” As Capp spoke, Marcel walked towards your group, his face grave.
“Lieutenant Severide needed surgery to repair the lacerations, they were too deep for standard closure. One of them acted more like a stab wound, and nicked his intercostal muscles. However, we were able to close it fully. He’s not out of the woods yet, he lost a lot of blood. However we’re hopeful. Captain Casey, you’re his medical POA, you can come up and see him. Everyone else you’ll need to come back later or tomorrow.” Matt stood to follow, and while he left you all signed up for visitor shifts. You took the 8.30am one for tomorrow, needing to do something after shift.
The rest of the shift was busy for the ambulance crew, but every minute felt like an hour. You got two hours in the bunks, but it was restless, every time you closed your eyes seeing Kelly’s blood on the streets.
Sylvie walked out with you, deciding to get a ride with you to Med so she and Matt could go home.
“You gonna be ok? I can stay if you like.” She said, watching your knuckles clenched over the steering wheel.
“I need to do this. I need our last words to not be me being vindictive. It’s not worth it.” Sylvie was silent until you arrived at Med then, both of you lost in thoughts.
Matt met the two of you downstairs, coffees in his hands which were gratefully received. “You’re on till 12, Cruz is coming by then. We wanted to make sure folks could get some sleep before coming in, is that ok?”
“Yeah, is he still unconscious?” You nodded, forcing yourself to keep a straight face while preparing for bad news.
“Yeah. They don’t expect him to wake up for a while. If anything changes let me know?”
“Of course I will. Get some sleep, Casey.” Matt and Sylvie both hugged you, and you proceeded up the elevators to the ICU. A nurse went to ask you questions, but as soon as she saw your paramedic uniform she just pointed you in the direction of Kelly’s room. It was silent apart from the steady beep letting you know his heartbeat was still going.
As you took the visitors chair you picked up his hand, the warmth of it surprising you. He was paler than normal, his usually sallow skin almost yellow. Running your hand up his arm you remembered the last time you’d done it, stopping a sob from coming out of your chest.
“I should have talked to you. I shouldn’t have ignored you. I’m so sorry, Kelly. I’m sorry.” You raised his hand, pressing a kiss to the back of it as you did. Your tears came unbidden, and you let them out at last.
“Hey, don’t cry.” Your head shot up, and you watched as Kelly’s eyes were open and you could see his familiar smirk.
“Kelly! You’re awake. Oh thank God.” You hit the call button for the nurse to come in and do her checks. You went to move out of the way, but Kelly intertwined his fingers with yours to stop you moving. Once she was gone you moved back, looking at him.
“I’m sorry. You freaked me out and I ran instead of talking. But after this, I need everyone to know we’re together. As long as I didn’t fuck it all up?” You smiled as he said it, squeezing his hand again.
“We fucked it up. Four am isn’t the time to talk about it. But I’m gonna be here as much as I can till you’re out, and I’ll be there while you’re recuperating. We’re a team, Severide. I’ll make us jerseys.”
He shifted over in the bed, pulling you up into it. You curled around him, being careful to avoid the large bandage on his side.
“Come on and sleep. You look like you need it.” You drifted off to sleep, his lips against your forehead as you were so grateful he was there. You didn’t even mind when Cruz woke you two hours later with an “I knew it!”
A tiny 2k fic based on @farfarawaygirl‘s post talking about wanting Matt to hallucinate/dream a future with Sylvie in the upcoming episode. Enjoy my friends!
“Do we really need to get up?” Sylvie’s voice is soft and sleepy, and it makes Matt’s stomach flip, makes him feel warm and safe. Stretching a little, only to bring his girlfriend closer, the firefighter nods, burying his face into the crook of her neck, breathing in slowly. “Can’t we just...not show up?”
A fond noise rises up from his throat, and the Captain laughs a little, bringing the covers up tighter around them. It’s cold and rainy outside, clouds hanging low, the sky dark. The perfect day for staying inside and not going to shift.
“As much as I want to, you know Boden wouldn’t be happy. His PIC and his Captain not showing up? The house would burn to the ground,” he jokes. “Okay maybe not literally, since we’re all firefighters, but…” he trails off, nose scrunching up at his lame joke. Sylvie presses a kiss to his lips, slow and sweet.
“Sometimes it’s annoying that you’re so responsible and dependable, Matt Casey,” the paramedic huffs. “But I love you for it. Everyone does,” she adds, making Matt blush, never one to accept praise and compliments well. But coming from his girlfriend, it makes him feel warm.
They get up reluctantly, knowing that their jobs are; whether they want to admit it or not, important and can’t be frivolously pushed to the side. Their routine is seamless, something they’ve been doing for months now- Matt works on smoothies while Sylvie gets ready, then Sylvie feeds their little black cat while he goes to do the same. It’s effortless and makes him smile every time they put it into practice. As he finishes pouring Sylvie’s blueberry smoothie into her usual to go tumbler, his own mango one already sitting on the counter, the woman comes out in a soft sweater, setting her bag down near the door.
“Otis said he has some big news he wants to share today,” she says as she presses a kiss to Matt’s cheek, taking her smoothie happily.
The words catch him off guard, enough to make him freeze, before remembering that Otis dying was just a nightmare of his. He’d woken up three nights ago sweating and frantic, tears burning behind his eyes as Sylvie had assured him Otis was fine, he was probably up playing fortnight or some other video game even at three am.
“Oh? Knowing him it’s probably some convention coming to town he wants us all to go to,” the Captain snorts. Making his way back to the bedroom, Matt slips on his favorite henley and dark jeans, attempting to fix his hair that’s growing longer now that it’s cold. After he brushes his teeth and looks himself over, the man grabs his bag and makes his way back to his girlfriend. A sharp pain shoots through his head but it’s gone as quickly as it’s come, and Matt brushes it off. As the lemon wallpaper comes into view; the same as the one from Sylvie’s old apartment, Matt looks at her.
“Ready?”
The ride to the firehouse is filled with old N’SYNC and Backstreet Boys, and Matt grins the whole time as Sylvie sings completely engrossed into the music. He’s not sure how he got so lucky to get her to date him. The way she says ‘I love you’ sticks in him every time and makes him feel more confident of himself. Pulling up to the large brick building, the couple gets out with their bags slung on their shoulders, hold hands, and walk in.
The morning starts even before briefing, alarm blaring out for all companies to help with a large fire at a hotel downtown. As they pull up, Matt notices the smoke billowing up from the top of the building, not black, but it’s on its way to it. Hopping out, Matt looks at his team; Otis, Kidd, Gallo and Mouch, then gives a wry smile.
“Hope you're awake guys, this one looks big.”
They meet up with squad, engine and ambo, and Matt goes to find the person in charge- a small woman who looks only slightly panicked, more shell shocked than anything. He hears a few of 51 directing people in and out of the building.
“We’re going to need blueprints of the hotel. Any idea where the fire is?”
From there it’s a rescue mission. Get everyone out as quickly as possible. Locate the fire and get it under control. On level thirteen, they run into an issue.
“Chief, floor thirteen is rolling, we’re going to need backup to get everyone out,” Matt radio’s. “Might need to call in some more ambo relief,” he adds.
“Copy that Casey. Sending in engine, and calling it in.”
Two hours of intense heat, getting bodies out, and going through recovery, and finally everyone’s back at the house, already beat from the roughness of the call.
“What a morning, huh?” Herrmann sighs, rubbing his face as he sits on the couch. Ritter and Gallo are working on breakfast, when Matt looks around and then blinks.
“Scratch breakfast, I’m too hungry for eggs and bacon. How about we order pizza from Benny’s?”
Everyone perks up, and Matt’s aware it’s due to the rarity of him suggesting something like this. He’s one to always stick to house made food, not big on ordering things in. It seems like everyone could use the pick me up though. Fishing his wallet out from one of his pockets, the blonde grabs his card and hands it to Gallo. “Order some pizza,” he smiles.
“You got it Captain.”
Kidd looks at him with her eyebrows raised.
“What?”
“Nothin’ Captain, you just seem in a good mood today is all,” the firefighter shrugs with a smile, making Mouch chuckle.
“Casey in this good of a mood means something happened.”
Furrowing his brow, Matt crosses his arm and lets out a huff. “I can’t just want to do something nice? It was a rough call.”
“Leave him alone guys, he’s happy. Don’t ruin it,” Sylvie walks over from where she’s been sitting with Mackey, putting a hand on his shoulder. Another jolt of pain stabs into his temple, but barely lingers. He squeezes her arm.
“I’m going to do paperwork, come find me when the pizza’s here?”
“Copy that.”
The rest of the day is, for once, blissfully easy, so far. There’s no bad calls for anyone, all mild and fairly quick. The consumption of pizza is interrupted by a small grease fire in a kitchen, but they’re all back within the hour, spirits high.
“I don’t wanna jinx anything, but today is going pretty well,” Cruz says as he takes a bite of pizza.
“Cruz! Shut up!” Severide calls out, rolling his eyes. Matt shakes his head. Leave it to Cruz to say it outloud. They all hold their breath, but no alarm sounds. Hallelujah. Sylvie sits next to him as they all enjoy the rest of their pizza, her hand on his knee, under the table and discreet.
As he works on paperwork in his quarters, the paramedic walks in, sitting on his bunk. “Come sit with me, you can finish paperwork in a minute,” her voice sounds tired, just having gotten back from a run. The tone makes him look over, and he can tell instantly. It was a bad one. Moving as quickly as he can, he sits next to her, one hand cupping her cheek, thumb brushing against her soft skin. His head gives an angry throb. He ignores it. Sylvie’s upset.
“What happened?”
“Gunshot wound to the chest...a seven year old,” her voice is thin, wavering as tears start rolling down her cheeks. “I k-kept try to get him to wake up.” He wraps his arms around her tightly, kissing her hair. His head won’t stop throbbing now. He swallows against it.
“Sylvie...you did all you could. I know you did,” Matt tries to reassure her, though he knows it’s probably not helping much. She looks up at him, heartbreak written all over her face. “He w-wouldnt...he was lying there motionless...I needed him to wake up Matt...I c-can’t…”
Looking down at the petite blonde, his head feels suddenly like it’s being cracked in two. The pained gasp that leaves his lips is unstoppable, and he screws his eyes shut tightly. He can feel Sylvie shift. His body is rigid, his skull feels like someone’s hit it with a hammer.
“Matt? What’s going on? Matt…”
He’s falling. Eyes still shut, Matt feels nausea well up inside him. The pain is all consuming. He struggles to open his eyes, and when he does, he’s in a completely different room. He’s disoriented, can’t quite get a hold of what’s real and what’s not. Is he dreaming? The pain in his head is angry and out for vengeance. The room is….is…. Matt’s mind feels like it’s grasping for straws, like words are right out of reach. His eyes move around. He feels hazy and sick. The beeping that’s coming from...somewhere, is hurting his head. His eyes shut.
Sluggishly, he blinks again, and a man with jet black hair is in front of him. “Matt, are you with me?,” the man asks, dressed in dark red scrubs. There’s a name embroidered on his shirt but it’s fuzzy. A pretty woman with curly hair is standing next to him. Choi, April, his mind supplies. He’s in the hospital. He can’t remember why. Can’t remember anything before then night prior, sitting in Molly’s with Severide.
Head throbbing, Matt licks his lips, nodding minutely. “Mm...y-yeah…” the word dies out. “Wh-What…” The Captain’s exhausted, and his eyes slip closed again, unable to stay open.
“Matt, I need you to stay awake, can you open your eyes?”
He tries, but it’s no use. It hurts. Everything hurts.
“Matt, can you tell me your full name?”
Struggling, the blonde opens his eyes again. “Matt...Matt Casey.”
“Good, good. And can you tell me what hurts?”
“Head...s’gonna explode…”
“Okay, we’ll get you medicine for that.” Choi turns to April, nodding as she walks out. “And can you tell me what the last thing you remember is?”
It takes a moment. He remembers Severide, and then...then….a car. A man driving and he was holding on...then...pain. Excruciating pain, ringing in his ears. Getting back to the firehouse, promising he was okay. Sylvie.
“L-Locker room with Sylvie...I was dizzy.” His words sound slow even to himself. Matt swallows and brings a shaky hand to his face. A painful tug on the back of it notifies him he’s got a line in.
Choi nods, writing something down. “You’re doing great. We’re going to get you in for a CT scan right away, but the fact you remember somewhat is good. How’s the pain? 1 to 10?”
“10,” Matt grits out, becoming more and more aware of the sharp pains encompassing his head. April’s at his side seconds later.
“I’m giving you some morphine, I’m doing it slowly. You should feel it in about ten seconds okay? You’ll feel warm and fuzzy, that’s normal.” He wants to tell her he’s already fuzzy, but instead he nods. Just as she’s said, he does feel almost instantly warm, and then it’s like he’s floating. His mind drifts back to Sylvie. They were dating. They were together. But no, that’s not right. Grainger.
“Is…can...wh-where’s Sylvie..” Matt’s certain she brought him in, she was the last person he can recall seeing.
“I think she’s out in the waiting area, breaking covid protocol,” April says with a small smile.
“I’ll get her for you, but only for a few minutes, once we get the CT room we’re taking you,” Choi adds.
They both leave and Matt’s left to his floaty thoughts. He wants to kiss Sylvie again, wants to hold her hand and call her sweetheart. He remembers, now, her telling him he was still in love with Gabby. That’s not true. It hasn’t been for over a year, more than that really. He needs her. He doesn’t want to see her with Grainger, he wants to be the one to let her know how special and loved she is. He loves her. The curtain slides, and Matt sees Sylvie walk in. Her eyes are puffy and red, and he can see wetness clinging to her cheeks telling him she’s been crying. He doesn’t want her to cry.
“Sylvie.”
The paramedics face crumples, and as she gets closer she scrubs at her eyes and face. “M-Matt.” It’s choked and distraught, and Matt slowly, lazily holds out the hand closest to her.
Sitting in the plastic chair, Sylvie brings it as close to the hospital bed as she can and grabs his hand hesitantly.  He wishes he could hug her, comfort her more than with just a hand hold.
“Sorry to interrupt, but we need to take him for the CT scan,” April walks back in, looking apologetic.
“Please don’t leave,” Matt slurs, and Sylvie lets out a choked laugh.
“I’m not going anywhere Matt Casey, I promise.”
When he’s not in the hospital, he’s going to fight for her. Grainger be damned, Matt’s going to somehow prove to her he’s not in love with Gabby anymore, and that Sylvie isn’t a consolation prize. She does deserve to be with someone who puts her first. And that someone is going to be him.
I know nothing and this is all a assumption. Jesse wanted to leave after season 9 (which is like April) so he and Kali probably just found out they were pregnant. But he stayed until the 200 episode (like October) and they need to write him off without killing him, so brought back the Darden which worked with the 10 year anniversary of Andy death. I feel like this was a good way to take him off. I am making the timeline up all from a photo of a Jesse and very pregnant Kali we got in November
yep, that’s what has been said. my guess is that he probably told before they filmed the last two episodes of season 9 (i could be wrong). apparently haas convinced him to stay until the 200th episode to give a proper send off. i for sure think the way they wrote him off was way better than k!lling him off (which they honestly could’ve done because let’s be honest, it’s chicago fire i don’t trust the writers lol). anyways, he’s been doing straight television for about 20 years! he really does deserve the break and to take time off to be with family. i just hope we get to see him before s10 ends aka for stellaride’s wedding (apparently they’ve started talking about bringing him back for it as well). i’m sorry but i just cant see anyone else but matt up there with severide during his wedding 😭 i’ll be so heartbroken.
If your requests are still open I would like to request the reader and her three boys (Kelly, Casey, and Jay). Where the reader has to deal with one of her boys being hurt on the job (you choose who) and the other two have to comfort her while she tells them her fear of loosing them due to their dangerous jobs and they tell her that no matter what they will fight to come home to her. Maybe some cuddles at the end as well!
Thank you! Love your writing btw! 💖
Come back to you- Kelly Severide, Jay Halstead, Matt Casey
Warnings: probably wrong medical terminology, basically having a panic attack, CPR mentioned, a curse word or two
———————
To say you were exhausted was an understatement. After working a 18 hour shift in the ER, you were more than happy to come home and collapse right into bed. Given that Kelly and Matt were at the station, Jay was left to make sure you took care of yourself. You were meant to be home hours ago, but someone called out sick, so you offered to cover half of their shift. Luckily, Jay had the day off, so he was able to pick you up when Maggie found you asleep in the doctors lounge. Jay had only had you home for a few hours when he got the phone call. You were cradled into his chest, sound asleep, when Matt called.
“Matt?” Jay whispered, trying not to wake you up. He knew this couldn’t be good. Matt and Kelly never called while on shift. A text here and there to check in was common, but they always gave a warning before calling.
“Jay. K-Kelly. Umm, I, We need you and Y/n to m-meet us at M-med.” Matt stuttered, fear gripping him as he watched Brett work on Kelly.
“Okay. Alright. Take a breath.” Jay said, partly to Matt and partly to remind himself. “How bad?” Jay dared to ask.
“Not good Jay.” Matt replied, right as monitors started to go off in the background. “Fuck. Kelly. Don’t you leave me.” Matt yelled, placing the phone between his ear and his shoulder.
Jay shook you, not bothering with a slow wake up call given the situation on the other end of the phone. ”Wha?” You moaned, rubbing the sleep from your eyes as you looked up at Jay. You could see the fear in his eyes and knew that something was wrong. “Which one?”
“Kel.” Was all Jay replied before you snatched the phone and let Jay out from underneath your body.
“Matt?” You asked, not even bothering to check the caller ID. You could hear him breathing heavily, the sound of the heart monitor beeping loudly through the phone and Brett yelling at Violet to step on it.
“Baby. I, we need you and Jay to meet us at med. Okay?” Matt panted, continuing CPR on your lover.
“Are, are you doing CPR right now Matt?” You asked, looking at Jay, who was grabbing clothes for you as you asked the question.
“Yes.” Was all the answer Matt gave before you heard Brett yell clear as tears streamed down your face.
You choked off a sob as Jay met your eyes. You shook your head and handed him the phone, no longer able to listen to Matt fight to save Kelly’s life. You shakily got dressed and listened to Jay tell Matt you would both meet him at Med. Jay dropped the phone onto the dresser before coming to pull you into his arms. You were a mess. You knew what was happening on the other end of that line. Your worse nightmare was coming true.
“Shhhhh. It’s alright. He’s gonna be okay.” Jay soothed, swaying back and forth with you in his arms. “They only had to shock him once. He had to jump from a third story window when a house started collapsing. So far, he may just have a collapsed lung, but Brett doesn’t think he has any other injuries, okay? They are at med. We gotta go.” Jay soothed, taking your face into his hands. He gently wiped the tears from your face with his thumbs. His words calmed you a bit, but you both knew Brett was only able to see things on the outside.
You allowed Jay to pull you out of the house and into the truck. You numbly watched the city fly by as Jay used his lights and sirens to get you both to med, both of you needing to get to Matt and Kelly as soon as possible. You were stuck in your head. You knew this would happen one day. You’ve patched your boys up time and time again. They have been lucky enough to only get scrapes, minor burns, grazed bullet wounds, or bruises thus far. You were always terrified of this day coming, and now it could be here. You could lose Kelly.
Jay had barely stopped the truck before you were jumping out and sprinting through the doors of the er. Inside, you were met with the entire firehouse, Matt sitting in a chair with Brett on one side and Cruz on the other, his face in his hands. Everyone looked up as you ran in, tears streaming down your face as you stood frozen in the entrance with Jay skidding to a stop behind you. When you met Matt’s eyes, you collapsed right where you were standing. If it hadn’t had been for Jay’s quick reflexes, you would be on the floor.
Matt hurried to your side, taking you from Jay and holding you in his arms. He smelled of smoke and charred flesh, making you wonder who had gotten burned. When you sobbed out the question, Matt was quick to reassure you that it wasn’t Kelly, but someone else Matt had pulled from the house right before it collapsed.
Matt and Jay let Will usher them into the doctors lounge once he saw you in Matt’s arms. He quietly shut the door behind him as he went back to check on Kelly for you when you basically plead to go see him yourself.
“I-I KNEW this day would come.” You sobbed, standing and pacing the floor in front of Matt and Jay. “I al-always thought one of you would come th-through those doors while I was working. Any time those doors o-open I m-make sure it’s not one of y-you.” You shake your head and look up to the ceiling. “I can’t l-lose him. I can’t. God, I can’t breathe.” You said, clutching your chest and sitting yourself on the floor.
Jay and Matt rushed to your side. Jay pulled you into his lap as Matt wrapped himself around the two of you. “Hey hey hey. Shhhhh.” Jay whispered, kissing your head. “Breathe with me. I’ve gotcha. We’ve gotcha.” Jay soothed.
Matt rubbed your back and wiped at his own tears. “It’s gonna be okay. He’s gonna be okay. Shh. Breathe.” Matt whsipered, making his voice not waver as Jay gave him the most heartfelt look he could muster. Jay wanted to comfort Matt too, but the broken women in his arms was his main priority at the moment as he pushed his own feelings to the side.
Jay and Matt had just gotten you to calm down when Will walked back in. Will cleared his throat before he spoke. “He’s awake. He’s got some bruising and his pulse was weak when he was brought in, but some fluids and pain meds has him bouncing back. He’s asking for you.” Will says, stepping aside as you jump out of Jay and Matt’s grip and run through the door, hearing Will chuckle as he shouts the room number behind you.
You come to a halt at the entrance of Trauma 1. Kelly is hooked up to the monitors. Bruises litter his face and arms, his wrapped ribs are peaking out from under his blanket. You let out a shaky sob as Kelly smirks at you through the pain.
“Hey princess.” He rasps, holding an arm up. “Come’re.” He whispered, hating to see you cry.
You rush over, carefully climbing into the bed with him and laying your head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat. “I-I thought. I really thought I l-lost you Kel.” You whispered, careful of all the tubes, wires, and his injuries, but getting as close as you can to him. You are shaking in his grasp, not even noticing Jay and Matt standing in the doorway as you soak in the presence of the man you thought you would never see alive again.
“Hey now. None of that.” Kelly shushes, rubbing your side as he looks to the other two men in his doorway. “I’ll always come back to you. No matter what, I will find a way.” Kelly promises, not just to you, but to your other lovers at his door.
“We all will.” Matt agrees, locking eyes with Kelly.
“No matter what.” Jay replies, taking Matt by the hand and dragging him to the bed with him. You giggle as the boys both carefully climb into the bed with you and Kelly. You barely fit with the man in the hospital bed, but the need to be close outweighed the obstacles that was the small hospital bed.
Life had never been easy with you, leaving your home in a small town at age 17 to ran away from a place where nothing ever happened, arriving to the big city of Chicago where you didn’t know anyone with barely any money, looking for a job as a waitress to afford the expenses of your new life and last but not least, meeting the man who would later turn into your worst nightmare.
Once you arrived to Chicago and settled in a little apartment you could barely afford, you decided to enroll in Chicago’s Community College to become a nurse, it had been hard with a lot of double shifts at weekends and many many nights awake studying but finally you did it and got a nice job at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, that’s where you met the person who you thought you would spend the rest of your life with, Ryan.
He had entered to the ED after a motorcycle accident and you immediately felt attracted to him, it was crazy, he was your patient and there was more important things to think of,  like taking care of his multiple wounds, mostly cuts and scratches, but still, you couldn’t fell for a patient, that was basic.
But life’s funny like that so after Will cleared him off to leave the hospital, he asked you out, you tried to refuse even when you didn’t really want to saying that he was a patient and it was wrong, but he insisted, he wasn’t a patient anymore, he had just been released, so with that argument and a little flattering of his part, you agreed to go out with him.
One date turned into two and then three and without realising it suddenly 2 years had passed by and you were moving together. You loved him, you really did and that was the main reason why you stayed with him, even after learning that he was part of a gang on the southside of the city and his day job was selling drugs, yes it was bad but he had always been so good to you.
A year later and things started to change, every cell in your body often told you to run away from that guy, that he was bad news and he was going to get you killed someday but your heart couldn’t bare the idea of leaving him. You had passed many sleepless night trying to figure out what to do, always trying to convince yourself to leave but you couldn’t, you were sure you could change him and get him out from that life, after all, that was your job, to help people. That thought was kept you going every day, despite all your fights and all those times he would grabbed your arms so hard that you'd have to wear long sleeves to work to hide the bruises, despite the nights he would come home so high or drunk that he could barely pronounce your name and all the nights you knew he was cheating on you, because, after all, it wasn’t his fault, right? It was all the drug’s fault and the people he hang with.
And one day, right when you thought nothing was going to change, you took that pregnancy test, two lines staring back at you giving you the hope you needed, that little person growing inside you was going to be the light at the end of the tunnel, that little baby was the answer to all your prayers.
But that wasn’t how Ryan thought at all, when you told him the news he was so furious, yelling at you for being so sloppy, for getting pregnant to tie him up and finally for cheating on him because there was no way that baby was his. After that he just left with his friends, probably to get high again and sleep with some other girl, leaving you at home alone and crying your heart out.
You felt destroyed, how could he said all those things to you? You always were faithful, you always forgive him and, more importantly, you always stayed until suddenly something changed, your tears stopped and you realized now you really had to leave, if not for you then for your baby who now depended of you so grabbing a bag you started to pack all your stuff, leaving nothing behind that could be a sign that you ever lived there.
Once on the street, with the air hitting your face as you put everything in your car, you felt the weight of the world being lifted of from your shoulders for the first time in a very long time, taking your phone out to call April, your best friend in the world.
You had met her when you first started working at the ED, from the beginning she was nice and helped you to get used to the craziness you had to deal with everyday. Being the sweetheart she was, she let you stayed at her place through all your pregnancy, you insisted to stay just for a couple days, just enough until you could found another apartment but she didn't let you go, completely excited with the idea of being the aunt of your baby.
Time flew by and when you least expected it, Aiden was born, the whole ED crew by your side, April and Will holding your hands, Natalie making sure everything was going fine and Maggie supporting you from the side with her encouraging words.
In that moment, with your little baby boy in your arms and all your friends around you, life couldn't be better.
After Aiden turned 1 you moved to a nice little apartment near the hospital where you met Kelly Severide, he was April's childhood friend and went with her at the housewarming party. He was sweet, charming and so handsome and you both really hit it off immediately but after Ryan and everything you had gone through you were a little bit wary of going back to the dating world, specially now that you had your little boy with you, Aiden being your number 1 priority. You knew Kelly was nothing like Ryan but that didn’t change the fact that you had some trust issues regarding guys.
It was really hard to say no to him when the boy was so persistent, going to visit you at the hospital whenever he had time in between calls when he was working or going to your place with some takeout to help you take care of the baby.
Slowly but surely, he eventually won your heart, having all those little details with you made you warm up to the idea of dating him and break down all the walls you had around your heart.
One rare night when you had the opportunity to go to Molly's with Maggie and April after shift, he showed up, flowers in hand and a huge smile on his face, to ask you officially on a date, how could you ever say no to that? He was the perfect gentleman and more importantly than anything, he accepted you with all your baggage, trust issues and Aiden, willing to be his father figure.
He soon started to be there in every first of Aiden, his first tooth, his first steps, his first word, the first time you ever took him to a zoo or his first day at daycare, staying with you at night and helping you whenever he woke up at 3 am crying or taking care of him when he wasn’t on duty and you had long shifts at the hospital.
He was fully committed, not only with you but with Aiden too, so much that one day when you had stopped by the firehouse with Aiden to pay him a quick visit you caught him at the table of squad 3 reading a book about “100 things you need to know about babies”, the sight melting away all doubts and fears you ever had, leaving nothing behind but love because that was the moment you realized you loved Kelly and it was such a strong and powerful feeling you had never experienced before.
Time flew by and before you realized it you were throwing Aiden’s fifth birthday party, the theme: firefighters. Ever since he was aware of what Kelly did for a living and understood what it was about, all he wanted was to be a firefighter, rescue people and be lieutenant of the squad just like him and every time he would mention it the smile on Kelly’s face would only get bigger full with pride.
“Happy birthday to you…” you all sang to Aiden in front of his fire truck birthday cake, the whole firehouse and Med staff there to spent the day celebrating with you.
“Blow out the candles, champ” Kelly said ruffling his hair.
“Don’t forget to make a wish!”
“Done!” he yelled before blowing the candles while everyone laughed and clapped, the boy having everyone in the room wrapped around their little finger.
“So... tell us, Aiden, what did you wished for?” April said
“I wished…” he said slowly creating expectation in the room “to be just like dad! A firefighter!” he screamed before hopping off his chair to go play with his friends, everyone on the room celebrating and laughing without realizing what had just happened. They couldn’t know it but that had been the first time Aiden called Kelly his dad, bringing happy tears to your eyes.
Even though Kelly had been there for you both since Aiden was almost two and Aiden couldn’t remember much before him, you had always told him the truth, letting him know that Kelly was your boyfriend and his biological father had disappeared long before he was born, it had been a little bit difficult to explain it to a 4 years old boy but with Kelly’s help you managed to do it avoiding all the ugly parts of the story and letting him know that no matter who his biological father was, you and Kelly would always love him.
Since he was a toddler who was barely starting to speak you had taught him that honesty was the best policy so you always tried to teach him by example even when it came to situations like that, once you explained it all to him Kelly and you made sure he knew that you were his family no matter what, trying to clear all fears from his little head when he asked if Kelly would leave you just like the other man did, the question almost breaking your heart and leaving you without an answer, fortunately Kelly immediately told him that he would never leave either one of you, that he loved you both and that we wanted to be his dad if he let him.
Around a year has passed since that day and you were more than happy to know that finally Aiden’s fears had gone away and he was ready to call Kelly his dad, sure that he would never leave you.
In that moment you felt Kelly’s strong arm around you waist making you come back to reality, proud and happiness all over his face as he looked down at you, that one look being more than enough to let you know what he was thinking, that moment in time being the proof that it was all worth it and without the hardest and darkest moments in your life you wouldn’t be standing there surrounded by the people you loved most.
“Who wants some cake?” you heard April in the background “Kelly, be nice and hand me some plates, please” she said while cutting the slices without realizing you were just having a moment when suddenly the doorbell rang.
“I’m coming” you said.
“Hey, (Y/N), if it’s Capp he better be standing behind that door with a really big present for Aiden, we will not tolerate him arriving just in time for the cake” Herrmann said making you laugh.
“I’ll let him know” you said opening the door still laughing.
“Miss me?” said the man at the door, his voice sending a chill down your spine and making you want to grab your son and run.
He hadn’t change a bit since the last time you saw him around 6 years ago but now all you ever saw in him transformed into disgust and fear.
“R-Ryan?” you stuttered closing the door as much as you could so nobody could see him “What are you doing here? How did you found me?”
“Well, it certainly wasn’t easy, especially since you left no trail behind you that time you left me but a couple days ago a friend of mine told me he saw you entering this building, I thought I would pay you a visit to check on you, see how are you doing now”
“I’m fine, thanks for the visit but I have to get back inside” you said trying to hide your nerves and closing the door when a rough push from his hand stopped you.
“Aren’t you going to invite me in, (Y/N)? It’s not like everyday your son turns 5 years old” in that moment you felt like your soul had left our body and all color drained from your face.
“I-I don’t… don’t know what you’re talking about”
“Don’t play stupid and let me in, (Y/N), I want to meet my son” he said threatening when it reached you from the inside the sound of Aiden’s laugh, making you snap out of your fearful state.
“He’s not your son, you made that very clear 6 years ago when I told you I was pregnant” you said firmly taking back all your power, your mother instinct kicking in instantly. “So now leave before I call the police” you finished before closing the door in his face, still shocked from your outburst.
It took you a second to recompose yourself, still trembling from the encounter with the man that some nights still haunted your dreams.
“Babe, do you want some cake?” said Kelly approaching you when he noticed the state you were in “Hey, what happened? Are you okay? Who was it?” he quickly questioned putting his hands in your shoulders to look at you and make sure you weren’t harm.
“He’s back, Kelly” you whispered, the lump in your throat barely letting anything out “Ryan’s back”
"What?"
"It was him at the door, he said that he wanted to meet Aiden. Kelly, what am I going to do? What if he wants to take him away?"
"What we are going to do is talk to Antonio, hell we’ll talk to Voight if we need to, we'll put a restraining order and make sure there is no way he can get close to you again, you're not alone anymore, (Y/N), you have all of us, you have me"
"I'm scared"
"I know" he said enveloping you in a hug as if that way he could protect you from all the bad in the world.
“Mom, hurry! I want to open my presents!” said Aiden running to you and tugging at your hand. With your head still buried on Kelly’s chest you took a second to breathe and push all your worries to the back of your head, making sure to put in a smile for Aiden.
“Let’s go, honey” you said stepping back, grabbing Kelly’s hand and letting the kid guide you to the living room where everyone was sitting around a big pile of presents.
“Okay, champ, open up mine first” said Kelly sitting in the floor next to him and passing him a box.
“Kelly…” you said, you had told him that it wasn’t necessary at all, he had already helped a lot with the organization of the party.
As Aiden ripped the paper and took the lid on a big red firefighter helmet came into view.
“Mom, look!” Aiden exclaimed putting it on “Now I’m a firefighter!”
Everyone laughed, he was so happy and that was what mattered the most. He continued opening the rest of his presents: clothes, a superhero cape and a bunch of toys.
It was around 7 when you and the girls could finally just sit down in the living room to talk and drink some wine, the guys at the kitchen with some beers and a mess of chips and popcorn around them and the rest of the kids and their parents gone.
Aiden had fallen asleep in your arms half an hour ago with his firefighter helmet still on and you wished everything could stay just like that.
“Hey, Antonio, I need to ask you a favor” said Kelly taking him apart for a moment.
“Yeah, of course, tell me”
“I don’t know if Dawson ever told you anything about (Y/N)’s ex boyfriend, Aiden’s father”
“Not much, she once mentioned he was into drugs and gangs but not much more, he’s not in the system”
“Well, he came by earlier saying that he wants to meet Aiden and (Y/N)’s afraid he might want to take him away, is there anything we can do? I was thinking about a restraining order but I don’t know how much that can help considering his background”
“Well, we can start with that but there’s not much we can do without any evidence”
"Okay, thanks"
“If anything happens let me know, okay?”
“Sure, thanks Antonio” Kelly said going back with the rest of the guys.
When you least expected it it was already 10 pm and everyone was going, it was saturday but that didn’t mean anything being a nurse, doctor, detective or firefighter, most of you having to work the next day.
“Aiden was so happy, I think we did something right today” Kelly told you while you were getting ready to get in bed.
“Yeah, I swear I could see his little face lighting up when he opened your present, thank you, Kelly, for everything”
“It was nothing, really. I saw it the other day on my way back to the fire house after a call and I thought of him”
“I don’t know what I’d be doing without you”
“Handling it like you always have, sweetheart, I’m here because you want me around, not because you need me”
“You always have the right words, don’t you?” you said laughing a little bit.
“I hope so” he said getting into bed and extending his arms for you to crawl with him.
“What are we going to do tomorrow?” you asked once you were both in bed, your head on his chest and his hand playing with your hair “You have shift and I have to be at the ED”
“I can take him with me, come pick him up after your shift, we can even have dinner together there”
“Are you sure? I don’t want to cause you any trouble”
“Totally, I’ll speak with the chief and whenever we have a call he can stay with Connie, she’ll love him, don’t worry about it” he finished pressing a kiss on your forehead, the feeling of his fingers playing with your hair relaxing you and making you feel sleepy.
“Okay but if anything happens or you need me to go get him, just call me, okay?” you said suppressing a yawn.
“Just sleep, babe” was the last thing you heard.
That night was probably the worst you’ve had in a while, images of Ryan, your past together and him taking Aiden away constantly awakening you and keeping you from resting properly so you were more than happy when you noticed the sun was rising from behind your curtains.
Trying to not wake up Kelly you slid out of bed and headed towards the kitchen, coffee being your only thought after the horrible night you had.
Once you had a cup of coffee in your system you went to the bathroom to take a shower, the caffeine and the water helping you to feel completely awake and ready for the day. After you finished and put your nurse uniform on you found your way back to kitchen to start breakfast and since it was sunday you choose to spoil your boys a little bit with some nutella waffles.
You were halfway done when you heard steps coming from the hallway and then a pair of strong arms wrapped around your middle, Kelly resting his chin over your shoulder and leaving a small kiss on your neck.
“Morning” he said in a low husky voice.
“Good morning, babe. Can you go wake Aiden up, please?”
“Are you sure you want me to?” he said now peppering your shoulder with small kisses.
“Not exactly but you both need to get ready to go to the firehouse” you said giving a squeeze to one of his hands before going back to your current task “Puls, don’t forget that tuesday’s our day, we’ll leave Aiden with Matt and Gabby and then it’ll be just us to do whatever you want”
“Fine” he said finally letting you go “Can’t wait for it to be tuesday though” you heard him saying from the hallway.
You were setting the table when you heard laughter coming your way, Kelly appearing with Aiden on his back, the red firefighter helmet once again on his head matching his fire truck pajamas.
“Hey Aiden, tell mama what I was just telling you” Kelly said putting Aiden down on a chair and sitting next to you.
“I’m going to dad’s job today!” Aiden yelled raising his arms, a light on his eyes you would do anything to protect.
“That’s right, buddy, now eat your breakfast so we can get ready to leave”
An hour later you were saying goodbye to your boys and heading towards your car, ready for the day ahead.
“Ok, Aiden, let me give you the tour” Kelly told the 5 year old once they reached the firehouse, the toddler hand on his while they walk to the front door.
“Hey! Look who’s here” yelled Herrmann from the inside, the rest of the house coming out to receive Aiden.
“Look, I’m one of you” he let go of Kelly’s hand to go running to the guys, showing them his red helmet again.
Everyone there loved the little guy, he had won their hearts a long time ago and it was obvious as they all show him around and let him get into the fire truck, never treating him as Kelly’s partner son but as if he was his own because for anyone who ever had the pleasure to meet the three of you all they could see was a family, not mattering blood but the real connection you all had.
“Hey, Aiden, I need to tell you something” said Kelly in a moment of quiet, kneeling down to be eye level with him “Listen, champ, because it’s important, okay?”
“Okay” he said putting on his serious face and trying to cross his little arms over his chest almost making Kelly laugh.
“There will be a moment when the sirens will go on and we’ll be call to go do our job and I won’t be able to take you with me so you are going to stay with Connie, okay? She’s nice but you have to listen to her while I’m gone” he said pointing at her who was going over some papers at her desk.
“Ohh, I like her” he said now relaxing and getting closer to Kelly “She once draw with me while you and mom were busy but told me to keep it a secret” Aiden whispered to him and put his finger over his lip.
“Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone” Kelly said playing along.
“Is that him? My son?” was suddenly being heard from the front, Kelly well aware of who was the owner of that voice and fire started to run down his veins.
“Hey, why don’t you go with Mouch to watch some cartoons? I’m sure he was looking for something new to watch” quickly said Kelly to the boy, Aiden running to the inside excited to show someone else his new favorite show and unaware of anything else.
Standing up and turning around he met eye to eye with the man who had hurt you so much many years ago and now was trying once again to do it.
“Leave, now” Kelly said angrily
“I’m not leaving anywhere unless it’s with my son”
By now everyone had already noticed the tension between the two and were getting around them, ready to back their lieutenant up or keep him from doing something stupid.
“Are you out of your mind? He never was and never will be yours”
“I have rights, he’s my son and I demand to see him” said getting closer to Kelly.
“You have no rights here, pal, you’re in my territory now and I’m not scared of you so before you do something you might regret just leave and leave my family alone because he’s MY son”
“Your family?” Ryan said before laughing “That dumb bitch will leave you just like she did with me, she’s not worth all the trouble, man”
“What did you just said!?” exploded Kelly pushing him back, everyone ready to break them apart.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you” said Matt getting in the middle when Ryan was about to push Kelly back.
“Yeah man, just leave” added Cruz, a halligan in his hands.
That’s when they both took a second to look around, almost everyone was there including chief Boden who was watching everything from behind, the only ones missing were the girls and Mouch, taking care of Aiden.
“I’m not done yet” said Ryan when he realized he was outnumbered.
“Yes, it is. Now leave and don’t ever come back” added Herrmann from the side.
“Whatever, we’ll see about that” finished Ryan before leaving the fire house.
“Are you okay, Severide?” stepped in chief Boden.
“Yes, sir” he said breathing and running a hand down his face.
“Good, now I suggest we let CPD know about this situation, it must be enough for them to do something. Back to work everybody”
Kelly knew it wasn’t going to be that easy but he didn’t care because no matter what he would always be ready to fight for his son, for his family.
The fact that Jesse kindly came back in 10x22 and they didn't break up Brettsey then pisses me off. Or even with 10x05, Sylvie and Matt could have decided they are in love, but it's too soon to do long distance. Still, of course, Haas and Andrea wanted to keep the Matt and Brettsey fans watching even though they knew there was a high chance Jesse would only return for the finale until the show ends (and they knew it would work for a while because Kara needed time off. But even this doesn't make sense to me because they could have had her leave for a family emergency or to spread paramedicine around). At the very least, they could have had the break-up be a facetime
I also think the breakup needed to be mutual because, unfortunately, the way they've written Sylvie coming to that realisation (talking to her ex-fiance Kyle ??) and the breaking up with Matt over the phone (or was it a voicemail since we didn't hear Matt?) doesn't paint her in the best light. I say this as the biggest fan. I kind of just wanted her off my screen in 11x01, and I hate it because I know it's bad writing.
I agree with all of this but especially about the breakup needing to be mutual, because it really did and they've done a huge disservice to the ship, characters and fans by doing it off screen and making it all come from Sylvie... who decided it not by talking to her paramedic partner, or best friend Stella or mouch or herrmann or severide or literally anyone else in 51... But by talking to her ex fiancé.
And it really doesn't paint her in the best light. And what pisses me off is that Sylvie as a character gets so much hate and instead of trying to put some thought into what's necessary (a breakup) they just have her do this??
And I mean I get it, doing ldr for a bit gave them good reason for K*ra's maternity leave (even though as you pointed out there could've been other ways !) but nothing explains them not having them breakup on screen??? They even could've had that they decided to break up back at Matt's and had the wedding be their last hurrah together and so we get closure seeing those last precious moments of them loving each other and loving being with each other but knowing ldr is hurting their hearts too much. (Or like for her maternity leave they could've had them decide not to persue ld in ep5, have sylvie decide to pay matt a visit later bc they've still been in contact and they want to see if they should've pulled the plug, them have a wonderful time but being like yeah not doing ld was the right move despite how it hurts being apart and then having the wedding as that last moment. And that would've been easier or given more closure because we could've had weeks of Sylvie showing their thoughts).
I'm usually quite good at not being too annoyed at the characters when it comes to bad writing but idk if it's because of my feelings towards k*ra or whatever but honestly Sylvie annoyed me soo much in that breakup despite me knowing it's because of the crappy writers.
Thank you for sending me this!!! We can be frustrated together! 💖
K for the fic asks! 😳
K what is the angstiest idea you've ever come up with? Strictly ideas? I've almost killed a couple characters in some really sad ways... there was temporarily a plan to kill Casey in a fic. Where he dies saving everyone and Severide goes after him, and drags his dead body out desperately hoping he's still alive and like begging him not to be dead 😔 then my wife threatened to divorce me if i ever killed Casey so that idea got nipped in the butt. But it would've been beautifully heart breaking. And i might write it as an alternate ending.
I’ve been feeling like I needed to write a One Chicago post, so here goes nothing. Hope ya’ll like it. Let me know what you think on social media or in the comments!  -K.
It’s the end of an era – at least in the One Chicago universe, as next week (April 15) will be their last episodes of their respective seasons. Chicago Med will be airing 5×20 “A Needle in the Heart;” Chicago Fire has 8×20 “51’s Original Bell;” while Chicago PD is actually airing what was supposed to be 7×19 “Silence of the Night.” Keep reading below for everything you may wanna know regarding these final episodes of your favorite One Chicago shows.
Tumblr media
So, what’s going on in the episodes?
If you haven’t been on social media, then you might not know that NBC has released the synopses and promos for each episode already earlier this week. PS: If you click the link on each show’s title, it will take you to their promo for the episode! 🙂
CHICAGO MED
Dr. Crockett is visited by two New Orleans detectives who have questions about his past. Dr. Choi puts his life in danger to save a child. Dr. Charles gives fatherly advice to his young daughter.
CHICAGO FIRE
When one of 51’s own gets injured on a call, Lt. Severide becomes obsessed with helping out. Foster contemplates a big decision. Kidd is concerned for one of her high school trainees.
CHICAGO PD
Atwater goes undercover to take down a gun-trafficking ring, but discovers an officer from his past is undercover in the same organization.
Any photos to see what’s next?
Yep, NBC has in fact released the official episode photos for Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago PD. Some for each show are below (all credits to NBCUMV, of course).
Any previews or sneak peeks?
While Chicago Med or Chicago Fire has not released any sneak peeks yet; Chicago PD has, and you can see those below:
CHICAGO PD SNEAK PEEK #1: TACTICAL TAKEDOWN
In the clip above, you’ll see Voight tell the team that Kevin will go in with a better order, that way the ringleader will be guaranteed to show. He has to work with that racist cop you may remember from season 6’s “Night in Chicago” (which coincidentally echoes this episode’s title “Silence of the Night”).
CHICAGO PD SNEAK PEEK #2: KEVIN AND VANESSA DO A DEAL
In the second sneak peek above, you’ll see Kevin and Vanessa go under as the primaries, as in: the officers who will be doing the gun buy from the criminal organization. In a “blink and you might miss it” moment, you see Jay and Adam watching cautiously from a secure hiding location, which means it’s their bust that they geared up for in the prior clip. Not surprising though is the guy’s underlying tone with Kevin, and you can see it on his face that he had to temper his emotional reaction in order to keep it “just business.”
Anything else to think about?
Weirdly enough, even though Chicago Med‘s synopsis mentions Dr. Crockett Marcel being visited by two New Orleans detectives (that explains his slight Southern twang to his voice at times…if you forgot about the jambalaya incident with April LOL) – he’s not actually featured in the promotional photos. Natalie is actually the one being questioned by a detective….wonder if that’ll factor in to whatever kind of “relationship” they’ve been hinting at between the two doctors. Sorry, Manstead fans. PS: I’m still rooting for Will & Natalie, but it looks like we’ll have to wait until s6 to get any developments about the once-happy couple.
Chicago Fire fans should get excited to see Stella Kidd shine in this episode, as she and Wendy Seager’s program “Girls On Fire” is really taking off. Plus, if you saw above, there’s a photo of Stella and Kelly walking into the station together – and who doesn’t love a good Stellaride moment, right?! Looks like they’ll be balancing the drama in the promo with these lighter, happier moments, which will be nice for us to see.
I will update this post if any sneak peeks from Chicago Med or Chicago Fire come in, just an FYI. 🙂
Everything you wanna know about this week's #OneChicago finales, including photos and sneak peeks of #ChicagoMed, #ChicagoFire, and #ChicagoPD. I've been feeling like I needed to write a One Chicago post, so here goes nothing. Hope ya'll like it.
B: Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?
Not really but when I write kids, sometimes they're inspired by a nephew or niece and their antics like in this chapter, little Nora Severide tells Sylvie she has a boyfriend and that was what my then four year old niece told me almost word for word 😂 kids say the darnest things. One day, when she's 18 I will remind her of that conversation lol. She's probably not going t remember it as vividly as I do.
C: What member do you identify with most?
If it's a character, it's Matt most of the time and I can't explain why or Violet, who I love making a supporting character.
E: If you wrote a sequel to Wanting Was Enough, For Me, It Was Enough, what would it be about?
I'd probably write some alternate 9x13 but instead of Matt going to Grainger, when he finds out they broke up, he'll tell Sylvie how he feels (and thus saving us a lot of time and angst).
F: Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.
“Matt,” Sylvie begins.
“Hmm?” he hums in response.
“How come you’ve never really dated anyone after Gabby?”
Sylvie knew Matt had gone on a few dates - the reporter covering a story about the trailer park fires, Sylvie recalls her name was Naomi, the tech girl who installed the high tech alarm system at 51 before Boden got pissed and broke it and most recently, that victim whose car got crushed by a kitten claw sign. But none of them stuck around for very long.
Matt looks at her in surprise, clearly taken aback by her question. Even Sylvie’s not sure where the curiosity is coming from. Maybe she just wants to know where his head was at. She’s choosing to blame it on the glass of wine she had.
It takes a few seconds for Matt to answer. “It just never felt right, you know?”
“You mean Vanilla Thunder wasn’t your soulmate?” Sylvie deadpans.
Matt snorts at the joke but his face quickly turns serious again, looking at her with his blue eyes darker than usual, “I’m not looking for a temporary distraction, Sylvie. It has to be right for it to work out - the right time and the right person.”
The right time and the right person, Sylvie repeats in her head. It sounded like a very Matt Casey thing to say. He’s been through the ringer, she knows, and she can respect his desire to find something real, something that will last a lifetime. Lord knows he deserves it. Somehow as those words continue to sink in, she starts to feel a bit warmer and it’s not just because they’re standing in front of the oven. It has a lot more to do with how he’s staring at her with this almost beatific smile.
“I just want you to be happy, Matt,” she blurts out unceremoniously. Again, blame it on the alcohol.
“Sylvie, I am happy,” he assures her, radiating sincerity, before looking at Elijah and kissing the top of his head, “I’m really happy.”
It's a really long passage but I've always seen Matt as someone who knew what he wanted and having anything less than that wasn't worth it for him. Traditionally, we would read about women left to do the pining and the waiting but I wanted it to be something different. Let the man know exactly what and who he wants and not dilly dally.
J: Write or describe an alternative ending to Wanting Was Enough, For Me, It Was Enough
I quite like where I ended it. It's probably the only open ended fic I've written but have an alternate ending which you can sub for the last section.
"So how are things with Grainger?" Matt asks politely as they drive to the restaurant.
Sylvie glances at him, looking up from her book, surprised by his question. He's just making small talk, she thinks, he can't possibly know that they broke up last night after too many cancelled plans on her part.
"We, uh, we split up."
"I'm sorry to hear that," he states earnestly. He meant it because even if he let his jealousy get the better of him while the Lieutenant was on their shift, Sylvie deserved to be happy. If there was one person on Earth that did, it was her.
"Maybe it's me - maybe I'm the problem," she mumbles before going back to her book. She says it so quietly that she thinks Matt doesn't; hear because there's a beat of silence before he speaks again.
"Sylvie, you're not the problem," he says firmly, gazing at her at they reach a stoplight, his eyes conveying nothing but sincerity, "any guy would be lucky to be with you."
Just not the ones I want, she muses bitterly, thinking about their kiss in her apartment and the her question afterwards. She takes a deep breath, shaking off her thoughts. No. They were friends. She shouldn't go down this road again.
"I mean it," he continues angling his body towards her, "and you know, maybe we can talk soon?"
He looks at her hopefully.
Talk?
"I think there's a couple of things I need to clarify after that night," he mentions, one of his hands moving to the back of his neck, rubbing it gently and quite nervously.
Sylvie smiles softly. Talking sounded good. It sounded wonderful.
"I'd like that," she tells him just as the light turns green and he grins at her before turning to face the road ahead.
K: What’s the angstiest idea you’ve ever come up with?
Aside from major character death, there's one where Matt and Sylvie are friends and she likes him but he's moving away and he doesn't feel the same way but she blurts it out one night at his going away party and he just looks so sorry because he just started seeing this one girl and he just really loves her as a platonic friend.
And I don't know where the rest goes but yeah, this is probably never going to get written.
M: Got any premises on the back burner that you’d care to share?
Not right now. I have a few WIPs but I think all of them will likely get done at some point..
..this year.
N: Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?
Not really. I think each writer has a unique voice so if I get an idea, I'd want to see it through and finish writing it.
Q: How do you feel about collaborations?
I'm open to it!
R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?
I really like how Sally Rooney writes. I've read all her books and she just manages to make people feel. I wouldn't say I'm really influenced by other fanfic writers. When I'm writing, I have a tendency not to read a lot of fics and catch up after I'm done mostly because I don't want to subconsciously grab another person's idea. Not sure if that makes sense but I'm just scared that I mistakenly think of it as my own when I've read it in a fic somewhere.
S: Any fandom tropes you can’t resist?
*I'm gonna presume the a above is actually s?
Friends to lovers will always be top tier, like the mutual pining? the tension? the confession?
Tumblr media
T: Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?
I'm not a super big fan of super far out AUs
