on the topic of men in magical girl shows being treated worse than women in shonen... mot only is it not true but a lot of men in magical girl shows are actually nuanced, full fledged characters with their own personalities and characters arcs.

mamoru chiba may be the poster boy for the male damsel in distress in magical girl shows but he's actually very helpful to sailor moon, supporting her both emotionally and in fights and doing everything he can to be useful to her. he even had a whole arc in the dream arc about wanting to be more useful to usagi.

syaoran li starts out as a rival to sakura and proves to be quite capable, even collecting a few cards on his own. he slowly becomes friends with her and eventually, her boyfriend. in clear card he's a very loving boyfriend and does everything he can to support sakura and make her happy.

touya kinomoto is sakura's brother who knows about her powers but doesn't tell her. he watches sakura from a distance and protects her in any way he can.

yukito tsukishiro is the alternate form of yue. he only knows about this near the end of the sakura card arc. but even then he's a good character with a full fledged personality. also he and touya are such a good couple.

masaya aoyama puts on a facade of the perfect, popular boy but deep down he's cynical and hates humanity because of what they're doing to the planet. but him meeting ichigo and spending time with her opens his heart. he also takes on the role of blue knight to protect ichigo.

shugo chara has many magical boys. tadase hotori, kukai souma, kairi sanjou, and nagihiko fujisaki are all just as important as the girls and they have their own character arcs. even ikuto is quite a complex character, that is if you take away his whole deal with amu.

princess tutu has just as many main male characters as female characters, probably even more and they're all extremely important to the story. mytho is the prince from the story drosselmeyer wrote who went into the real world after he shattered his heart to seal away the raven. fakir is a descendent of drosselmeyer and starts out mean but eventually grows to care about ahiru and plays a very important role in the finale. drosselmeyer is the driving force behind all the events in the series.

the precure franchise, although it did some of its male characters dirty (*cough pikario and takumi cough*) also has some great male characters.

seiji sagara is megumi's childhood friend who finds out about her being a precure. even though he doesn't have any powers he does his best to support her and her friends.

prince kanata is the catalyst behind haruka becoming a precure and he's a capable fighter who does anything to protect his kingdom and supports the girls whenever he can.

henri wakamiya is the first ever male cure (although he's not on the main team) and gives a wonderful lesson about gender expression.

masato aikasi starts out being very conservative but after his heart is opened by henri, he starts to learn that gender roles are stupid and even stands up for his sister against their grandfather.

and now we have cure wing, who is going to he the first main male cure in the franchise.

even though there are male characters in magical girl shows who are either done dirty or quite useless, a lot of the time the authors actually develop the male characters just as much as the female characters.

and this should be an example because if these shojo magical girl authors can put just as much care into their male characters as their female characters, then what's stopping these male shone authors from doing the same to their female characters? shonen being aimed at boys and the authors not knowing how to write women is not an excuse. if shojo authors just said they don’t know how to write men, they would get laughed at. so why is it seen as an acceptable excuse for male shonen authors.

and even if there is a lack of men in these magical girl shows, so what? men have like 148293 shonen anime with generic male protagonist #738383 who beats up bad guys and gets a love interest whose only purpose is either the damsel in distress or fanservice bait. let us have a genre made for women by women. it won't hurt you.

Summary: Whenever Sora's away, Kairi has the tendency to dwell on things and hide in her thoughts.

      The weather was pleasant. It was more so than Kairi's thoughts, and so the girl grumbled to herself under her breath.

      Sora… He'd come and gone just like that, and it bothered Kairi. She knew he had a duty, he had a job that only he could do. But there were others with a Keyblade. There were others with powers like Sora's, right? So after all their time apart, couldn't Sora just…stay a while with Kairi?

      "You've gone again," Kairi thought aloud. Though she was alone on the beach on Destiny Islands, she still felt the need to voice her displeasure.

      The waves lapped at the edge of the sand, and she stuck her bare foot in—and quickly withdrew it from the ice-cold water.

      Kairi sighed and stared at the sunset. "You've gone again," she repeated. "And I get the feeling that this time you'll be gone for even longer." She shook her head. "And I know…I know I'm not much help. Even when Riku let me borrow his Keyblade, I couldn't keep up with the fight like you two can. I—I'm not strong enough."

      The girl dropped her violet–blue eyes to the ground and pushed a lock of mahogany hair out of her face. She frowned. She hated this feeling of worthlessness. What good did it do Sora simply to be his rock, to be grounded in Destiny Islands? She wanted to be by his side, to fight, to be able to look into his eyes every morning, day, and night and—

      "You don't know how hard it is to tell you as much," she breathed. "My heart's not supposed to have a hint of darkness, right? Right, Sora? But what about when you're not here?" She glared angrily at the sky. "What about the times when, even in the bright daylight, I feel like I'm trapped in a sea of all the monsters you've ever fought? Simply because you're not here to protect me."

      Kairi paused, and some of her irritation ebbed. She couldn't believe how…how needy she sounded. And she was just complaining about not being strong enough? Yeah, she definitely wasn't strong enough if she still thought she needed protection. And, as the word rolled around on the tip of her tongue, a flame ignited in her and burned away her aggravation.

      "Oh. I—I think I get it now. Why you had to leave… Why you heeded the King's summons in that letter…" Kairi watched the clouds roll by. "You want to protect me, just as I want to protect you."

      As though in answer, a breeze gently passed through. It kissed her hair and held her in its arms, and Kairi had a feeling that it wasn't any simple wind.

      She grinned. "Yeah… I miss you, too, Sora. But when you come home, I'll show you that I can protect you, too. I promise."

      Kairi turned and continued down the rest of the beach, the soft wind walking with her for the rest of the way.

:] This actually came out better than I thought. I often thought Kairi was overrated. I always tried thinking of Kairi as someone who could grow out of that weak mindset. And, yes, the wind personification is a play on the meaning of Sora's name—which is Japanese for "sky," in case someone doesn't know that already. XD This fic is a Christmas present for one of my best friends, N. You write the best moving pieces of poetry around, girl! So Merry Christmas, N! Hope you loved this…especially since I had to pause writing HariPo fics for a moment to sit down and really work on this! XDDD *lol*

It's one of the very few things she keeps to herself on these Islands. Not even Sora and Riku know about it — or at least, if they do know, neither have given any indication to being in on it in the first place. But either way, it's her own little secret; she selfishly wants it to stay that way.

That secret is...

Inside a shed behind one of the older, unoccupied houses in their neighborhood, a house that Kenji tells her hasn't been lived in in about four years, now, there lives a family of cats. Seven kittens, and two adults.

Kairi first discovered them one day a couple of months ago when one of the neighborhood kids said something that had upset her at the time, and she'd wandered off on her own to cool down. She'd been passing through the yard of said abandoned house when she'd heard some mewing coming from nearby, and upon following the noises had come across the clutter.

She'd been careful not to touch or disturb the family too much, but since that day Kairi's been bringing them food and water as often as she can, and each time doing so by herself.

She's named each of them in private, too—

The two adults she's named after Kenji and Aika — the irony, for the former, of the human Kenji being allergic to cats not at all being lost on Kairi — and the kittens she's named after the different plants and flowers here on the Islands. After all, Aika's taught her a thing or two about gardening, about growing living things, and Kairi's always had a fascination with flora; it just makes sense that she would give her new friends names to match.

She's twelve, and she's got her human friends — Sora, Riku, Tidus, Wakka, Selphie — but she's never gotten to care for another living creature the way she cares for these cats, which is why she considers them her friends, too — even if she knows they aren't actually hers, at least not in the typical sense. They're not her pets because she can't bring any of them home due to Kenji's allergies, but...

Kairi loves these cats all the same, and she does her best to look out for and feed them as much and as carefully as she can. There's not a whole lot of stray cats on the Islands; she's maybe seen a total of one or two the whole eight years she's lived here.

That's why they matter so much to her. A few weeks ago she'd even used some of her allowance from Kenji to buy a couple of cat toys from the local pet store, and drop them off at the shed for the kittens to play with.

They're her friends, and she wants to make sure they're cared for.

Yes she was fifth grader and don't worry most people at least the one I know doesn't even remember that detail, Shugo Chara just happened to be my comfort manga when I was younger that it stay in my head even after decade pases.

Also thank you for being level headed and understanding while providing the answer. People I saw in internet usually doesn't want to view amu and ikuto's relationship as a fan service and usually people didn't even read or read way past the first few chapters before making a judgement, especially people who keep saying that Ikuto is abusive and forcing himself to Amu even though he wasn't and there's always a reason behind his "problematic" act. So your honest opinion make me really glad that I decided to have this talk with you.

Me however feel defensive because I kind of expecting another whole debate about it because that's what I've been experienced for years and I'm sorry if my ask come out like that.

Yeah I mean... the whole thing between Amu and Ikuto would have a plethora of issues in the real world, but from a fictional perspective, it makes sense why it's there. The whole manga's pretty fanservicey for Amu anyway, with how many people get crushes on her. Kairi and Nadeshiko/Nagihiko, for instance (though only the relationships with Tadase and Ikuto go anywhere). Even the cases where Ikuto's a little overly forceful make sense, it's part of the "well I'm not allowed to desire this, but this other person made me" thing that also explains why rape fantasies are common, even though most of the people who have those would never want it to happen in real life. It's one of the cases where you can really tell that Shugo Chara is aimed at tween girls and is meant to cater to them specifically. It also shows just how much Ikuto's attracted to Amu, which I mean, the idea that a hot bad boy high school student would be that into you as a tween girl can be a gratifying idea. Like this is the kind of thing I could see kids that age writing stories about, kind of like what happened in Turning Red, if you've seen that movie.

Actually it reminds me of Tokyo Mew Mew, which was the first manga I ever owned. Ikuto's a lot nicer than Kish is at least.

Also I actually finished the manga, I'd reread volume 1 earlier, and the library was missing two volumes so I skipped those (like I've said, I HAVE read it before, it's just been many years).

Plus I mean, I like plenty of "problematic" manga. The first anime I ever saw and at least one of the first manga I ever read was Cardcaptor Sakura. Beautiful art, great story, fantastic characters... but I wouldn't actually hand the manga to a kid in the target audience's age range because of the relationship between Mr. Terada and Rika (ew). Very glad they changed that to being a one-sided crush on Rika's part in the anime.

I don't necessarily LIKE when shows and manga have stuff that's squicky, but I'm also gonna look at why that stuff was included, and even in cases where I really think it shouldn't have been there, I might still enjoy the show/book for the other aspects of the story.
