The Teddy Bear

Spirit took the teddy bear out of the gift box and held it in the direction of his little daughter. “Look, Maka, what Uncle Stein gave me for you.”

The little girl looked at the new toy with wide eyes. She quickly crawled over to her father and grabbed the bear.

His wife watched her with a skeptical look. “Do you really think that’s a good idea?”

“Oh come on, it’s just a teddy bear.” Spirit smiled as his daughter pulled on the bear’s ear.

Suddenly there was a bang that made them both jump. A large load of confetti had shot out of the bear’s head and was now scattered all over the carpet. After the shock, the woman looked annoyed at her husband while her little daughter clapped her hands enthusiastically.

Spirit scratched the back of his head. “I’ll get the vacuum cleaner.”

Finally had some free time to do one of the Soultember days from @rennikun’s soultember prompts!! Today’s prompt was witch 🧙🏻‍♀️

It was no secret between the Spartoi members that Shibusen kept a secret vault containing the more scandalous parts of the school’s history from being leaked to the public. Maka had heard scandals on completely opposite ends of the spectrum, with things as asinine as her papa pouring school money into Chupacabra’s renovations to more substantial issues like Lord Death pardoning a mad doctor who’d been toying around with innocent souls.

Maka tried to not flinch everytime she heard the sound of muffled talking outside of the decrepit stone brickwork which made up the walls of the vault. Her fingers couldn’t help but scrape through the cracks of the bookshelves she passed before her eyes settled upon a large manila folder with the name Bushida scribbled upon it with a red marker.

It didn’t take long for the young woman to grab the file down and plop onto the cold floor as her jittery hands opened the folder.

At first, Maka only saw a few pictures of her mama from when she still lived in Death City and a few lines of notes scribbled on a yellowed sheet of paper.

However, a more thorough glance at the papers slowly solidified her intuition.

She now had clear evidence that her mama was a witch.

Ok but this post also made me think about Kami having a bad bad bad postpartum depression + not having any family support from anyone outside her/Spirit's Shibusen "colleagues", probaly rejected for her family for being a young mom which probably leads to her rejecting Maka in all imaginable ways

Maka was that baby who's left on her own crying hours long until dad came home to tend her basic needs or until her little throat couldn't produce any more sounds. Spirit wasn't at home as much as Kami since he needed to work to support Kami and Maka, probably being a young Death Scythe meant him doing loads of administrative work while Kami was on maternity leave.

Kami probably was too direct with her rejection towards Maka, not picking her up, not taking photos with her, avoiding the school events as much as possible, etc., but Spirit kept trying to fix things convincing Maka that "mommy didn't mean to be rude, she's just having a bad day" in hopes that Kami would magically turn into a good mom some day (because he's also young and dumb and knows nothing about parenthood or healthy family dynamics), which ultimately only leads to Maka blaming him for everything, in her little mind daddy and his affairs is the only one responsible for making mommy mad, if he wasn't like that mommy would be nice to her.

I think Kami would take administrative missions at every chance, so she would not be near her family ever. Slowly she starts to take small combat missions alone or with temporary partners and then she dies, probably very short after the divorce. But since she almost never had communication with Spirit or Maka during those missions they weren't in her emergency contact info, so it takes a while before someone notifies Spirit, thinking that he should already know.

Spirit then makes his responsibility to keep the "postals" coming and faking Kami's presence in Maka's life, until he stops with the fake cards shortly after the Battle on the Moon, still he can't bring himself to tell Maka the truth.

And later on that's a motive for Maka to *truly* hate Spirit.

I think she would understand at some point that mom wasn't as good as she thought and dad wasn't as bad, her relationship with Spirit slowly healing, still she doesn't know about her mother, what happened to her or where she's now.

Maka fears mom has a new family and forgot about her. Did she really hate her that much?

Spirit tries to do it in the best way possible but is there a "best way" to tell your daughter that her mom has been dead for a couple years already?

The sound of creaking is occasionally heard through the silence.

My view is focused on one thing though, that man, hand gripping the screw in his head. He's gotten taller since I last saw, Spirit was the tallest man in the "group". I was always forced to be around his friends, what luck that they're all faculty of this damned academy. The sound of a leg bouncing is also here, it's familiar and annoying. I'm not focusing on that though, I can see him in the corner of my eye and I wish I didn't, I've grown to hate the color red because of him. My focus is on the freak nonetheless. Nobody has said anything, just sitting silently at this table. There's stitches all over it. Suddenly, to my right he clears his throat.

"Maka's been good, she's top of her class, she's becoming a great meister!" The man exclaimed nervously.

"I don't care." I glare at my ex husband, he bites his lip, making those stupid panicked noises before looking down, nodding. I was hoping that'd be it until a different voice speaks up.

"Figures you wouldn't care, I mean...when was your last visit?" He smirks, the stitching on his cheek gets pulled back freakishly from the movement. I stand up from my seat.

"You have no right asking that! I needed to get away from this asshole over here! Mothering isn't easy!" Spirit gulps, looking at me after I say this loudly. Stein just stands up as well. "How could you know? You've never done it." He says, blankly, still smiling. As if this is funny.

"Oh, please, you couldn't even take care of a mouse! Honestly it's a wonder Spirit moved back in with you! He only did it because he needs someone to give his pathetic ass a purpose! He's only here because I left!" I slam my fist against the stitched table. .

Stein scoffs, "Spirit's a grown man, he does what he wants. You should know, you clearly couldn't please him or keep him in line."

I gasp, horrified, before I can say something Spirit stands up, embarrassed.

"Stein!"

We both don't acknowledge him, continuing on.

"Spirit is a spineless whore!"

"Kami!"

Stein snorts, but shrugs.

"Like I said, he's a grown man, he can do what he wants. It's his choice to stop acting like a child though." I cross my arms, glaring at Stein as he says this. "Okay guys you're just being mean to me now." A sad voice says underneath everything.

At this point Stein and I have gotten closer, emphasizing our words as we speak, both of our hands on the table as Spirit looks at us pitifully.

"Well he chose me over you! You're just a danger to everyone! I'm the one with the daughter with him!"

"how's that going for you?" Stein grins, looking around the room, as if to emphasize the point that Spirit lives with him again.

"I can see your soul, Stein. You're anxious, you're getting defensive and worried! You act so high and mighty but I can read you, way better than anyone could!" I say, grinning, looking at his soul, my words are true too. Stein may be able to give quick responses but he's always been threatened by me. The man's smile drops, he glances away, furrowing his eyebrows.

"Guys! Please, let's try getting along! Why don't we try resonating?" Spirit says, putting a hand between us. We both get caught off guard. It's silent for a moment before I move away from the table.

"You're so naive, so stupid, if you think I'd ever resonate with Franken Stein!"

"I'd say the same about you," Stein says as he lights his own cigarette. Spirit frowns, pouting. "That has to be the stupidest idea you've had yet." The stitched man shoots a look at Spirit as he says this.

I get up, towards the door. "For once, I agree with Stein here." Spirit's about to cry and Stein just smokes his cigarette quietly.

Then I leave.

IT'S PERFECT!!!!!!! IT'S THEM!!!! The song was MADE for them it's exactly what I think Stein thought the first time he saw Spirit and aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh this is just....so beautifully made??? And that little tiny canon divergence at the end I'LL TAKE IT! I was so upset they had no real interaction in that scene cuz maaaaaaaaaan it was primed for angst but obviously we had bigger fish to fry and the series had to end, and there was too much to do to fit into the episodes but I digress anyway THIS ANIMATIC IS INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!! This reminds me of the famous one by Zi for SoMa and aaaaahhhhhhhhh I am incoherent I'm sorry just. My heart.

The timings! The facial expressions! Their whole story!

I'm....I'm slain. @nyarsenic if you draw more of them my heart will be FILLED and my gosh Candaru you have a talent for storyboarding this is fabulous!!!!

And how Soul would follow Maka to the ends of the earth and jump off the edge after her... Even when Maka has started following after someone else Crona.

So yeah, parallels... Stein, with Spirit and Kami.

How interesting Maka turned out just like her daddy in that.

This joke has been in my head for the longest time

This is further evidence toward the various fanon opinions that Maka's mother is the one who did the abandoning and was the bad parent, while Spirit stuck around all along. Spirit loses it on Medusa because he was essentially seeing his wife in a mirror, through Medusa's words. Someone who was "mom" in name and image only, but in practice.... Who knows what Maka's mom really did, but the point is she left. And from what canon explains, pretty recently too, so it's a fresh wound for Spirit. And with everything else going on, he simply can't take it.

Stein meanwhile, I think he has a natural anger toward the thought of a parent abandoning a child, but I also think it's exacerbated through soul resonance by Spirit's anger. His articulation of the problem really brings it home, that Spirit is dealing with feelings about his wife's abandonment of Maka.

Spirit is the parent who has stayed. But Maka isn't accepting his love right now, his wife stripped him of parental rights in the divorce, and so he feels utterly helpless as a dad of a thirteen year old who is facing challenges worse than what he faced at his age, and to just have it thrown in his face like that.... He's already feeling helpless, and so to see the callousness of the other parent.... To be feeling it as his wife being callous toward their daughter... He sees his daughter as alone and abandoned despite his presence, since he can't do anything for her/she won't accept him. So this was all just too much for him.

Something I find interesting: When he and Spirit are facing Medusa and Medusa makes that comment about abandoning Crona once she's "no longer useful", Spirit is the one who loses it so badly he can't even speak and has to keep himself from I'm assuming straight-up punching her while Stein, the reputed violent one, is able to stay calm and collected enough to articulate the anger he and Spirit are feeling in scathing detail.
