Even with Ava’s nerves, things seemed to be going pretty well as the chef had arrived and began to cook their food. They could both feel some heat radiating from the grill, but there was no noticeable flame at this point, only the steam and fragrance coming off of the meat and vegetables as they cooked. Kanti could see that Ava was starting to loosen up a bit, especially when the chef playfully attempted to toss bits of meat into their mouths, and their catching attempts went about as well as two giggly ladies could. At one point, the chef cut a thick slice of onion and split it into its layered rings. He carefully stacked the rings on top of one another until they took on a cone-like structure, then took a bottle of some unknown fluid and poured it into the onion cone through the topmost ring.

And then he took a lighter to the stack and sparked a small pillar of fire in what was now clearly meant to be an onion volcano.

More 101 Smiles, and things are not going good for Ava here D': Yeah, onion volcanos are fun to watch, but when fire is the main focus of your trauma it is absolutely NOT fun at all.

As she was searching her bedroom for the escaped cat, she heard something fall to the floor in the kitchen. The cat stuff, the groceries, it must have been. She dashed into the kitchen, only to see a flash of orange leaping down to the floor after the mess he had made. He’d pulled out a paper-wrapped package from the groceries and began to tear it open, and once enough paper was removed he started consuming the fish fillets within. “Oh my god, cat...” Kanti sighed. “You gave me a freakin’ heart attack...” She approached him and gingerly picked him up, even as he was still chewing on the mouthful of fish he had, then grabbed the package of fish and tossed it in the trash. There went dinner plans, can’t exactly eat after the cat’s mouthed all over the fish.

“That was very naughty, you little stinker,” Kanti said, but in all honesty she couldn’t be angry at him. He just needed to be taught better, and that’s what she was going to do as his new human friend. “Well, now I know why the shelter named you Garfield.”

Speaking of the cats, here came Casper. Kanti could have sworn she’d closed the door, but she wasn’t particularly fussed about it in that moment. He meowed and meowed as he approached the bed, chatty as ever. He leapt up onto the bed and, in spite of the nasty tissues scattered about, curled up right beside her and started to purr. Kanti let out a small involuntary gasp but said nothing, instead opting to pet his soft white fluff. Friendly as the ghost he was named after.

As Kanti cuddled with her boy, she could hear the three distinct voices of her other fur-babies. Cadbury was the first to dash in, quickly followed by Samhain and Garfield. One by one the other three made their way onto the bed and each snuggled around her. Four vibrating fluffballs sending cat energy throughout her body. Even in her miserable condition, at that moment Kanti felt truly blessed.

“Yes, I was actually more concerned with whether or not the salt water and sand would irritate them.” She pondered on this for a bit. “Then again...thirty years of healing have passed...and they haven’t been bothered by soap for the longest time, so maybe it would be okay...” She clenched her fist in a self-assuring manner and, quicker than Kanti expected based on how she’d usually seen her do so, slipped her gloves off and gently tossed them into her bag. “All right!” she exclaimed. “I’m ready for the ocean!”

“Hell yeah, let’s go!” Kanti excitedly ran towards the ocean, and Ava followed with glee. They let out surprised squeals (and in Kanti’s case, more than a few swears) at the water’s unexpected chill, but not long after they were goofing around and splashing each other and having a great time.

More 101 Smiles! I honestly do wonder how sensitive burns as serious as Ava's are would be thirty years after the incident that caused them. Or would it be the opposite, where that part of the body has been less sensitive than it initially was ever since due to, like, nerve damage or something? I'unno, I'm not a doctor, the only thing I know about super-serious burns is how the hot coffee lady's pelvic mobility was basically destroyed as a result of the damage and resulting skin graft necessity (and how her reputation was equally destroyed by the burger clowns, another justification for my years-long grudge against Ronald McDonald or at least the corporate goons who hide behind his not-so-friendly face), and my only personal experience with burns is stuff like pizza mouth.

Nothin' more wholesome than girlfriends walking their pets together :3 I'm sure Cadbury turns some heads when Kanti's got him out and about, after all people walking their cats is still pretty uncommon. And of course Marshmallow's a good boy, so well behaved ^u^

Soooo sometimes when you're a vet, you get some real rowdy patients. Sometimes those patients are very anxious cats. And sometimes in their fright, they swipe at the vet holding them and prove that their humans thankfully didn't decide to have a big piece of their toes cut off. Good for them in the long run, bad for Kanti here in the short term cuz she got a real bad gash on her eye. Thankfully there was no permanent damage to the eyeball and all she needs is some antibiotics and recovery time and she'll be fine! There might not even be a scar! Ava's still very concerned though, especially with regards to how she got to the hospital with only one undamaged eye. I think she got a coworker to drive her, there's no way she's gonna try and operate a motorcycle with temporary monocular vision. Though if this had happened shortly before Ava quit, she would've insisted on driving her to the hospital personally.

More 2012 stuff, here's Kanti and Ava getting a portrait done with their furbabies! Yes, even with her veterinary career giving her more leeway, Kanti's become just a bit of that crazy cat lady stereotype hehe. Ava's made some great strides both in her career as an artist and in recovery from her childhood trauma. She doesn't wear her gloves nearly as much anymore unless she's genuinely concerned about how something she handles might irritate her burn scars, she's less likely to freak out in the presence of small-to-medium-sized controlled flames (big and/or wild ones are still a concern, but it's closer to the level of someone without the fire trauma), and while she of course still has her bad days the time of needing a service dog to help her calm down from real bad moments are behind her so now any dogs that live with her are strictly companions.

Winter (the grey and white cat on Kanti's shoulders) was rescued in January of the previous year, already heavily pregnant with a litter of kittens. Kanti and Ava took her in, initially a temporary decision until she could recover from her time on the street and they could see if she had a home, and when she was cleared health-wise and it was proven she had no prior family they adopted her permanently. She then had a save, warm place to have her kittens, which she unceremoniously did one morning while her new moms were preparing breakfast. A healthy and happy litter of six, four of which were adopted out with breakfast-themed names, but Kanti insisted on keeping two of them: Ham (male, left) and Egg (female, right). Kamal Jr. (the black cat on Ava's shoulders) was similarly a rescue, brought into the clinic Kanti works at when he was a kitten. He was very timid upon arrival, reminding her of her anxiety-ridden twin brother who she then named him after. Though it seems that his timid tendencies were just a factor of being a very small kitten in a very new and scary place, as he's certainly grown into a confident and friendly adult cat! Cadbury (the brown and white cat in Ava's arms), as the youngest of Kanti's original kitty clutter, is the only one left from the mid 90s. Even in his old age his nails are still in very good condition and he's still a very pokey cat, but he has become a very mellow old man. And then there's the Samoyed, Mr. Poofers the Third. It's become a tradition at Kanti's clinic that any white fluffy dog that lives there until being adopted is given the name Mr. Poofers for...whatever reason, and this guy just happened to be the third one to get that name. And Ava fell in love with him ;w; It's a good thing he already got along so well with the cats living at the clinic!

So I remembered I had access to the transparent template of the polaroid frame used for the pics that you take with Mirphy's old camera, and I wanted to both put that to good use and see how my OCs might look in as close to the game's original style as I could manage. I'm really proud of how these came out! Only thing I woulda done differently is not lock the transparency when doing the noise-then-blur thing with Cosmos, but considering they were the first one done I clearly took that as a learning experience going forward XD Also there's a good year range between all of these in-universe, the earliest being Cosmos taking a proto-selfie just fresh from getting out of the Habitat, and the latest being Teddy where it's taken after he's out as a guy and started binding. Not before he picked his current name though, hence the corrective strips and rewrite hehe.

Soooo punk Kamal is a Thing and is pretty much why Kanti's got the punk aesthetic in the first place, but I figured the two ideas of punk Kamal and Kamal having a twin can and should coexist, if only briefly :3c I think this is either a temporary makeover moment or Kamal's punk phase was suuuper short in his teens, especially compared to his sis who's still punk to present day. And not even present day as in the generally accepted in-game year, I mean OUR present day too. >:3

Wanted to draw my SFM OCs as Animal Crossing animals, so here they are :3 Everyone's personalities and catchphrases are as follows:

Marcy - peppy dog "dogear"

Ash - smug goat "nenene"

Rosalyn - normal elephant "petal"

Ava - normal horse "brushes"

Kanti - sisterly cat "anyarchy"

Teddy - lazy cub "sh-shushin"

Holly - sisterly wolf "arooof"

Jaymee - sisterly octopus "dpad"

You can tell I have a preference for a certain personality, hehe X3 Yeah, I really like sisterlies, normals, and lazies. I wanted to make one of the ladies snooty to round things out but I couldn't really see any of them as "snooty" as defined by the game (ie. stuck-up and appearance-focused), and while idk if Ash would really be a smug it was close enough. Teddy's not really lazy per se, but he's very much NOT smug, cranky, or a jock. (I kinda don't like jocks that much as it is tbh) Cosmos is human because 1) protag, 2) I didn't want to assign them an animal personality when the personalities are very clearly restricted to binary genders, 3) I didn't want to feel obligated to give them a voice via them having a catchphrase as I'd rather not have any AU of them suddenly voice-capable, and 4) I kinda already made an AC outfit for myself themed around them hehehehehe :3
