Karl gets really freaked out if he starts feeling Dream's influence on him fade even a little after that btw.

Sure, Dream has the church, but most people have their own small rituals that they do to keep their connection. Karl did also have one, and he would visit the church now and then, but it wasn't that hard for his memory to slowly start fading, for him to forget the habit of burning candles and leaving fruit once or twice until he would forget to do it all together.

[Storyboard 2] Dead Center and Thirds

This is definitely going to be another long one, isn’t it? (╯▽╰ )

This was another school assignment of mine where we had to draw eleven mini illustrations utilizing the assigned camera shot types of: extreme wide, wide, knee-up, medium, close-up, extreme close-up, high-angle, low-angle, dutch-angle, over-the-shoulder, and point-of-view. As you can probably also tell from just a quick look at these drawings, I cranked up the fanart dial to the max so everything here is outright fanart of some kind (≧▽≦) (Although it tends to hurt my hand adding all the extra details, it does help prevent me from developing outright hatred for my school work /ᐠ˵- ⩊ -˵マ)

Anyway, time for some art notes about each of these drawings! ( ˶ˆᗜˆ˵ )

The first drawing in the list is the one for the extreme-wide shot! Chronologically, however, this was the sixth drawing I made! The first thing that came to mind when I read camera shot type was a big landscape, but I’m not really good at drawing landscapes and didn’t really have the time to learn to make something decent, so I used that one drawing of Haikaveh sitting on a hill by @dekoi.art as reference. I also made this into YingYangz fanart because they’re my favourite vtuber pairing and they have absolutely altered my brain chemistry. I love Cass and Luci's interactions so much lmaooo. It was a bit difficult drawing in all their little details though, but I think I managed to get enough of the important points down for it to be recognizably them (as long as you have their pics for side-by-side for comparison lol)! I also gave Luci a lil umbrella for protection, tho I don’t know if he ever mentioned in lore if he was immune to sunlight or not, but it was still a fun idea lol! ꉂ (≧ヮ≦)

The next drawing on the list is the wide shot and was the fifth I made chronologically! I don’t remember how I came to draw it, but I think I got the idea for it when I saw a picture of some sort of… place (I can’t remember what it was or what it was called, but it was pretty), got reminded of the Inbetween from TFTSMP, and then decided to draw Karl exploring it. (—ᴗ—) I designed this Inbetween hall after the image of the place I saw and designed Karl’s clothes after this cute Cookie Run design I saw someone make of him! I don’t remember the artist’s name, but I think it was something-ddissey…? I also decided to give this drawing some values to set apart the dimness of the hall and the brightness of the courtyard ≽^•⩊•^≼ I don’t know if the topic of Karl Jacobs is controversial considering his connections to Mr. Beast (Tho I think it might be?) Just in case he is tho, I swear I do not agree support any of their shenaniganeries ಠ⁠︵⁠ಠ I just really like Tales from the SMP ◉_◉

Keeping this short, the next one is the cowboy/knee-up shot and was the fourth drawing I made chronologically. For this one, I just really wanted to draw my Food Fantasy oc, Jelly Art ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ However, since her design is still sort of up in the air, she doesn’t look like this the other times I drew her. As for the actual scenery, it was just something I drew as a second thought lol (≧▽≦)

Anyways, on to the medium shot! Chronologically, it was the third drawing I made for this assignment, and I just really wanted to draw Ororon because he’s one of my fave Genshin Impact sons >ᴗ< However, I decided to use @_versavea_’s design for him specifically because it’s just so nice, I love it! (∩˃o˂∩)♡

The close-up shot was the second drawing I made for this assignment, and I immediately had a vivid idea of what I wanted to do for it! I don’t remember how I decided on it but I just knew I wanted to make draw Aesop Carl from Identity V as a hunter ฅ^>⩊<^ ฅ I know his original artist already made a hunter form for him, but the moment I remembered that his “mask” were two hands intertwined with each other, I was like “Aw heck naw” and decided to draw @mr.vanhellis’s hunter Aesop Carl design instead lmaooo ꉂ (≧ヮ≦) I also decided to give this drawing values to communicate the mysterious night-time vibe I had imagined! One last fun fact about this: I originally drew Aesop’s head too big but didn’t have the time to fix it before I turned it in, but now that I’m uploading these drawings to my social medias for fun, I decided to fix it lol (ᗒᗜᗕ)՛̵̖

Anyways, onto the extreme close-up, this was actually the first drawing I made for this assignment! I don’t know how I came to decide on this subject, but I think I just really liked the idea of drawing Wanderer from Genshin with cracks/kintsugi fillings on his face as it is one of my fave headcanons for him ≽^•⩊•^≼

Next on the list is the high-angle shot and let me tell you: it was one of my least favourites to make ｡°(°.◜ᯅ◝°)°｡ Drawing foreshortened bodies really wasn’t my strong suit and finding reference images had been an absolute pain. In the end, I just drew a random body based on a ref image I found and tried drawing another vtuber I like, Rosco Graves, over it. Of course, it doesn’t look like him (and I blame part of that on how detailed his design is), but honestly, I was so sick of that drawing at this point ૮(˶╥︿╥)ა

The low-angle shot was no better. I had a vivid idea of what I wanted to draw in mind but couldn’t find the right reference image to help make it happen, so in the end, the perspective is pretty off (╥ᆺ╥；) This drawing is sort of a fanart for a short Homestuck fic I read on ao3 by cosmicRoadkill where, in it, Karkat is the one who dies instead of Aradia and ends up being brought back by her as a ghost! I wanted to draw him, but his regular appearance lacked the elements that Aradia had in life that made her ghost form look cool (long hair and skirt), so I decided to give ghost Karkat a cloak so that he can have the same ominous appearance! The background was whatever.

The next drawing was the dutch-angle drawing, but as proud as I am of this one, I’m not quite sure how to explain my thought process behind it… I guess, to put it simply, the subject of this drawing is a heavily headcanonized version of Scott Major from a lil Life Series SMP AU I have. His signature weapon is a bow and he can create shooting stars with it, which… is basically what he’s doing in this drawing (≧▽≦) I did a little experimenting with this drawing regarding the shooting star arrow, and I think it turned out well all things considered! The actual design I used for Scott in this was something I cooked up on Gacha Life 2 since I didn’t want to go through the trouble of making up a design for him on the spot ᐠ( ᐛ )ᐟ

Moving on, we have the over-the-shoulder shot, and at this point in time, I was fairly sick of these drawing and just wanted to be said and done with them ૮๑ˊᯅˋ๑ა Originally, it was going to be an over-the-shoulder shot of Gingerbrave from CRK looking at Cream Unicorn Cookie, but when I drew the body for Gingerbrave, the body-type came out wrong, so I scrapped the original idea and decided to essentially redraw a scene from a Homestuck Lyricstuck video of the song “Nothing Left to Say Now” by @paperseverywhere, where a Doomed Dave wakes up in the Dreambubbles and is greeted by a Doomed John. I think you can tell from the look of it that every second working on it was like pulling teeth out ( ´ཀ` )

Finally, this brings us to the final drawing of this assignment: the point-of-view shot! Surprisingly enough, despite being the last drawing, it was one I was actually excited to work on. Although I’m aware that a lot of opinion regarding the Dream SMP these days tend to be… less than stellar, and that the topic of Wilbur Soot is 100% controversial, when I tried to think of ideas for the point-of-view shot, the only thing I could think of一the only thing that came to mind, was that once scene from SAD-ist’s Dawn of 16th animatic where Philza reaches out to Wilbur as he salutes back moments before his death. Although I was never really attached to Wilbur Soot’s content outside of his music, I did always adore the story of the Wilbur Soot character from DSMP (ESPECIALLY Ghostbur (my freaking beloved)), so the drama regarding cc!Wilbur Soot did upset me a lot (｡╯︵╰｡) To remedy this, I technically, basically, created an oc named Talullah and jam-packed her with all my c!Wilbur Soot headcanons to replace c!Wilbur Soot in the fanon recreation of the DSMP in my mind ᐠ( ᐛ )ᐟ So yeah, the point-of-view drawing is basically my redraw of SAD-ist’s scene but with Talullah lol! Now, with all of this in mind, one might wonder why I did not do the same with Karl, and to that I say… I did not think of it at the time ._. But if I ever decide to draw “Karl” again, I’ll probs replace him with an oc lol ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

So yeah, this was my entire artist notes for this singular school assignment. It ended up being a little over 3 entire pages in my docs ₍^. .^₎⟆

I meant to draw like. "Hey here's what I mean when I say Karl goes fully saturated when he's sobered up from the inbetween's influence" but I ended up just throwing a lot of filters on top so it doesn't really count.

But yeah he goes fully as bright as he can. With time it settles into something healthier but at first he just had bright spots and saliva

you’ve mentioned tftsmp a bit before, did you/do you have an ideal ending, or continuation, of that lore and c!karl’s connection to it?

i actually wrote this while i was writing that c!Q rant yesterday but this is how i like to think ckarls memory loss works. i think it’s less of forgetting actual events but forgetting context. i don’t see ckarl lashing out on cQ as him forgetting all the good like it’s commonly believed (or stated, i don’t remember) i see it as confusion, followed by anger. cKarl was def thinking “why would i kill myself for a stranger?” and assumes cQ killed him to explain his death. early ckarl never did anything if he didn’t get something out of it, he was selfish and slightly hedonistic until he gets with c!sap and c!quackity who confront him about being irresponsible. they stake their marriage on the completion of a group effort, c!Q and c!K have to successfully govern new lmanburg and c!S has to detach himself from c!dream. c!karl becomes notably checked out and lazy whenever he comes back from the inbetween which makes sense if he’s forgetting his duties like ruling over kinoko ad well as all the work it took to earn that role, he’s regressing. that much can be seen in how little he wants to be involved with c!d escaping the prison and throws the responsibility on c!sap. (side note: i think c!q held c!k accountable and c!s trusts him which is why they worked well as a team, c!s focuses more on doing what he can to protect c!k rather than working together, so when his leader and lover tells him “you got it” he has no choice but to believe him)

karl desperately tried proving his worth/importance to others after manberg was established so he could be in animatics by building countries, switching sides to have more clout, joining cabinets, sacrificing himself, and constantly frying his brain to keep looking for a way to save everyone. i believe all those karls walking around in the inbetween were trying to fix whatever went wrong or caused the current state of the dsmp, like what set off the chain of events (past) and what ends it (future) and end up getting stuck in this nonstop cycle. karl’s arc should’ve been focused on how selfish and cowardly he was but loses himself in trying to correct his wrongs by saving everyone. he shouldn’t have to bear that burden alone especially when he’s engaged to two of the most selfless people on the server. c!sapnap has a similar arc when he sees c!dream for who he rlly is and starts using his power to help the weak rather than punching down. maybe it’s corny but it makes the most sense for someone to find his journals and try to help him or him directly asking for it. he can’t fix the past or future directly but he can change the present type deal

if you wanna get more meta i also see karl’s role as a time traveler like that of the caged child in “the ones who walk away from omelas” where his existence/suffering is needed for the current dominance life/XD (3 lives system) has over death/kristan to exist. i dislike the dsmp ghosts a lot im not gonna lie but i think they work with my understanding that having 3 lives means death is kinda fucked and weird in exchange (ex. souls being split in two, limbo, jack crawling out of hell, whatever was up with c!george). the gods felt like they were working towards being more significant, especially XD which makes so much sense with c!dream also abusing tf out of the life books power

i really like ckarl and i wish time travelers tales didn’t get fucked last minute because tftsmp is still such a cool concept. it was just executed poorly because cc!karl kinda sucked at writing and lowkey had no idea what he wanted to do with karl (also bc nobody knew where the story would end) and i think he was afraid to address into his character kinda being a brat when everyone else was getting serious

Karl: Kidnapped?

Karl: Yes?

Karl: I have my book... I write stuff in it so I don't forget. I saw Ranboo doing it I think, that's where I got the idea from.

To come back to your arms, to lay warm once more

It's always odd to see Dream lounging like this, to find his God (because this is his God. No matter how much the castles scream and tear and twist, this is his God) laying on a sun beam, casually leaning against a rock.

When Karl read about other gods, when he heard people talk about theirs, they were always untouchable by mortals, living far away on their golden palaces. Not like Dream, with paws stained of dirt and scars. A being made of flesh and blood like any of them.

He wonders if those devouts can hear their gods' heartbeat.

"Are you trying to look poisonous?"

Karl snapped back into attention, focusing back on Dream's face from where his eyes had drifted to the God's... other features.

"What?"

"You have color splashes all over your back. Are you trying to look poisonous Karl?"

Did he? He hadn't noticed, but the in-between has a habit of trying to shove it's hands into Karl's form, trying to reshape him.

(Somewhere under the fog in his mind something shuttered, something that could remember screamed at the mere idea, at the implications. Karl was too tired to listen to it.)

He took of his black and white hoodie, walking to a nearby stream and looking at his reflection in the water.

Truly, there were splashes of color on him, looking like someone had violently slammed a paintbrush against his ribs.

"You don't look poisonous Karl. The colors are too muddied, they make you look sick."

Karl jumped. He hadn't noticed Dream getting up from his sunbeam and following him. That was two times that Karl wasn't paying attention and got startled, and from the look in Dream's eyes he hasn't pleased with that.

Oops.

"You did such a better job with your hair before, I don't know why you decided to change to this. The grey looks bad, makes you easy prey," Dream said, one of his hands sliding over Karl's scruff, covering the back of his neck, "let me fix it for you."

And then there was warmth flooding Karl's body, flowing into him from Dream like fresh blood as the other forced a transformation, shifting the form of his devout.

Karl felt cleansed. Exorcised of an evil that settled on him bit by bit, consuming him like a frog on boiling water.

Like waking up from a long terrible dream, like falling asleep in a warm bed after a long terrible chase.

Belatedly he realized there were tears sliding down his face as his mind cleared and sharpened, and it took a bit until he could see his reflection on the water of the stream again.

The ends of his curls were once more filled with color, less vibrant then he would personally have but such a relief after spending so long not realizing that they were gone that Karl's eyes almost blur once more.

The ugly muddy splashes across his skins have become a light brown pattern, just slightly darker then his skin, spanning down his back and on the tip of his nose like a deer's fur.

Karl laughs, desperate and fearful as all at once he feels all he has done, remember all he has forgotten, and as he feels Dream hesitantly pull his hand away Karl slams his own on top, keeping the God's hand in place.

"Karl?"

His laughter becomes maniac, his eyes closing as he curls up on himself. Shaking his head like he shake away the memories, turn everything he went through into a bad fever dream.

And then he starts sobbing, throwing himself into Dream's arms and praying that he will somehow hold him together when that being (because whatever the inbetween is, it is not a God. Karl will not give it that tittle) was trying to rip his devout away from him.

His prayers are answered and Dream pulls him closer, letting Karl hide his face on his shoulders as he sobs, the fur there growing wet in a matter of seconds.

Eventually, after what feels like eons, Karl feels himself calm, a natural exhaustion settling deep on his chest at the same time a pounding headache settles behind his forehead.

Distantly he realizes he has shifted once more.

He stops clutching Dream like someone will come drag him away, glancing down and finding colorful spots like confetti on his skin and ears floppy and long against his back as he takes shape of a rabbit, mimicking Dream's favorite form, his real true form, not the showy and impractical angel that he uses to scare away outsiders who expect something else of him.

Karl's eyes are heavy and this time he let's them fall with no fear of where he will wake up.

He is back home, in his den, safe from the claws of the hunt.

It's time to rest before the next day, before his next chase.

i think it was like a thing of like, people wanting their favorite character to be part of every plot point honestly? And also probably Ranboo’s really weird way of making lore for their character where it’s just like. Ok man was this like. Always what was intended or are you just coming up with this on the spot? It kinda feels like he’d just come up with whatever would hype people up the most or like, “be cool” or whatever, but it’d just lead to C!Ranboo’s story having so many different plotpoints and plotholes and just kinda made the whole thing a tangled mess by the end.

I think the reason people grew so attached to the idea of Ranboo being a time traveler was partly due to it being cool, and probably mostly due to the fact that it kinda (?) somewhat solve some of the main C!Ranboo lore (Like the idea of the memory loss being like what was happening with C!Karl, and the idea that there was like the black and white places in the Inbetween made people harken it back to Ranboo. I think Ran from The Pit episode also was part of why ppl were thinking about C!Ranboo? That’s what I assume at least) but like I really don’t think it does anything for his character honestly, especially considering it’d be such an out of nowhere choice for where to take their character. (Like how the hell would Enderwalk tie into this?)

Incredibly off topic but @mcyt-builds-contest is currently going on and the final round has Pandora's Vault (VOTE FOR PANDORA'S VAULT!) and in light of all the Traffic SMP/Hermitcraft people who are incapable of being normal about DSMP fans, just letting you know that The Inbetween and Otherside are my wives. So is every other TFTSMP build. Me and the Masquerade map are in a toxic relationship and me and The Pit are about to go through a rough patch. I have a giant bed for every single one of my gorgeous wives. Yes I'm aro. Yes I have also referred to c!Karl as my wife. Yes every iteration of Lizzie is also simultaneously my wife. Karl HCs

Of course Karl has a bad memory, time travel has taken a toll on him. It wasn't as bad at first, being able to remember most of what happened in his first few trips. But despite him being able to remember those trips at first and take notes, his short term memory began to fail him much quicker. The more trip he takes, the shorter of a period he has to remember and write notes on these trips. later parts of his notebooks look pretty much illegible because of how quickly he's trying to write. Timelines start to bleed together at a point, sometimes confusing Karl. He will miss-remember people and faces or forget them all together for long periods of time. (Karl has absolutely called Sapnap both James and Mason before) Sometimes he does have moments of clarity, during those times he tries to piece together what is real and right in his own current time. Karl his more lucid/remembers more when he is in the Inbetween/ The Otherside. The Overworld is where he forgets.

Hello! I've been reading through your DSMP Blade System AU posts and am curious about how many shards/Blades DreamXD's Blade got separated into and what other characters are one of the resulting Blades?

Considering the Blades you mentioned (c!Dream, Mamacita, Drista and Cornelius) its characters played by cc!Dream or his sister. Im guessing NotDream123 might be another one then if he exists in this AU. Also Hubert which could be fun as the most c!Karl got about him was a mention when he was at the Masquerade.

I was thinking that the core crystal broke into 5 pieces. Here is an idea of what I'm going for, please excuse the roughness:

c!Dream is made from the bit in the center, which is shaped like a diamond or a rhombus. The other 4 Blades have the rectangular shaped parts, set at an angle. Core crystals are generally one color; the contrast here is to differentiate the sections.

The original core crystal was the same as the others, roughly palm sized. The shards actually grew a bit when they became Blades of their own.

Current Blades are Dream, Drista, Cornelius, and GirlDream/Mamacita. I'm still undecided on who the last piece will be.

Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with NotDream123. I'm probably going to end up skipping him? I checked and he dies several times, and a key part of this AU is that c!Tommy, c!Tubbo, and c!Ranboo don't really know all that much about the Blade System and how it works for regular Blades.

It probably will be Hubert. In this, Hubert was a Blade. The Egg can corrupt Blades by reaching through their bond with their Driver. Through Hubert, the Egg realizes that the corruption only lasts 1 life; if the Blade is killed, reverts to core crystal, and reAwakened the corruption is gone.

Actually, I really like this idea. So the Egg decides to try corrupting the core crystal of the Blade, and has Hubert killed again (by Billiam) shortly before the Masquerade. The core crystal is left in the Egg's room, and c!Karl accidentally grabs it when he is being murdered at the end.

This is part of the reason why the Inbetween grabbed Karl at this point. XD was manipulating it so Karl could keep Hubert's core crystal in his inventory when he died and then XD could retrieve the core crystal when Karl arrived in the Inbetween.

XD has a weird relationship with the Aegis pieces. As much as he wants his original Blade back, he does get less focused on his goal as the story goes on. Part of it is that DreamXD is Drista's Driver (why she has Creative) and he starts to like her. Part of it is that he is getting more interaction with other people and not stewing in his own loneliness.

GirlDream/Mamacita is the 2nd fragment recovered. I want to say that her Driver was Mexican Dream and she returned to a core crystal with his first canon death? The problem is that they're kind of joke/humor characters, and... So, humor is an important part of tension. But again, c!Tommy is not supposed to get enough info about the Blade System to read into the undercurrents of what is going on before Staged Finale. The entire situation needs a bit of workshoping. I'd need to re-watch the streams before I make a firm decision. XD grabs her after Mexican Dream's Third Canon Death.

Cornelius gets recovered because XD retrieves him. As the 3rd fragment recovered, he also gets put on a shelf.

Hubert is the 4th fragment recovered. XD pickpockets him out of Karl's Inventory in the Inbetween. Hubert does not go on the shelf because XD is too busy worrying about the damage the Egg did to the core crystal during the attempt to corrupt the core crystal. Since the Egg is an offshoot of the being that originally shattered the Aegis Blade, XD thinks it might be lingering damage for that instance, though he starts getting suspicious as he picks up more details from George and Foolish.

XD's attachment to Hubert and worrying about the damage also makes XD look at Mamacita and Cornelius in a different light. Around that point, XD stops leaving them on the shelf and starts carrying them with him.

XD is drawn to George in part because George was Dream's Driver. Part of their friendship is a shared grief for their Blades. XD does not meet Dream until the very end, when he has been mostly convinced that murdering 5 people to bring his friend back (an act that will upset all his current friends and destroy Drista, who he is fond of) is not the best plan.

DSMP is about humanity, about how even bad people are still people. This AU also adds a hunt for identity. When does a person stop being the same person. For a Blade, does the memory loss make them a different person in their next life? For DreamXD, the five fragments are explicitly different people, and he has to grapple with that fact as well as the driving force of his own grief and the knowledge that he can resurrect his friend--but it'll have consequences.
