thanksgiving playlist extravaganza, pt. 1
i got busy last week with work and with life, and didn’t get around to putting together a friday playlist, which bothers no one other than myself, and doesn’t bother me that much, either.
but, since thanksgiving is coming up this week in the united states, and i’ll be spending a lot of time in the kitchen, i thought it might be fun to make a larger list to keep you company while you mash your potatoes or stuff your turkey or just stock up on wine and order takeout.
this is part 1 — tumblr limits you to ten bandcamp links per post, which seems reasonable, so i’ve broken it up into three lists with the occasional youtube link when bandcamp fails me. next edition on tuesday, final edition on thursday.
***
charlie megira | tower of tongues
CHARLIE MEGIRA has always seemed a little tragic to me; he was always a man out of step and out of time. he’s hard to pin down, genre-wise, because he jumped around a lot, which wouldn’t have been a problem today, but in the pre-streaming era, could make it tough for people to discover and stick with you. this particular song is from his post-punk era, and until listening to this record for the first time in months, i did not realize how much of modern post-punk (e.g., soft kill) you can hear in this.
creature party | digital addiction
CREATURE PARTY are locals here in portland who we caught the other night, playing in the basement of the shanghai tunnel bar, which may (or, as it turns out, mostly like may not) have been the site of countless abductions, a gateway to a dangerous and unpleasant life of servitude at sea. in reality, most men who were sold into servitude were just drugged and then defrauded.
i don’t have a good transition here, i just wanted to clear up a common misconception.
creature party were a delightful riot live. sound-wise, they’re very definitely a pacific northwest band, and you can hear the usual indie influences there (sleater-kinney is probably the easiest and laziest reference i can think of), but there’s plenty more to like here, because there’s just as much weirdo, lo-fi, fuzzy B-52s in this sound as there is pacific northwestern indie.
laura jane grace | lolo 13
approximately 5,700 years ago, i lived next door to AGAINST ME! in a triplex across the street from gainesville punk greats BITCHIN’ and caddy corner from former floridian lumberjack and all-around man of bellows, CHUCK RAGAN. the late 90s were a pretty wild time to live in gainesville, florida. i would not have predicted LAURA JANE GRACE would’ve become who she’s become at that time, but i’m not sure i would’ve predicted anyone from that time would be doing anything they’re doing now — caroline from BITCHIN’ was in RUSSIAN DOLL!
i haven’t really kept up with LJG in recent years because i’m just not huge into acoustic folk-punk anymore, but this record has a lot more depth than i thought it was going to, and i consider myself corrected and reminded to stop writing things off just because i think i know what they’ll sound like.
surface to air missive | rosy
these folks (or, well, this folk) is new to me, but i really enjoy SURFACE TO AIR MISSIVE. there are plenty of influences you can hear here, and plenty of influence-influences you can hear, as well — not only can you hear some of THE SMITHS or even NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL here, you can hear the bands who influenced them. i don’t know much more about this band beyond knowing that it’s a one-man show, which is impressive. normally, one-person bands tend to fall apart when it comes to drums, but these are solid throughout.
katie morey | trial by fire
i bought this record earlier this year, and keep coming back to it as a recommendation, even though i have a hard time pinning down exactly what i like about it. it’s got a specific sound which i nonetheless can’t quite put my finger on, but it definitely comes from the early 1970s. lots of heavy reverb, electric piano and quietly competent drumming. it’s a fantastic sunday morning record all the way through, which i can’t recommend enough, even while being unable to explain what, specifically it is that grabs me.
kid congo powers | peanuts
KID CONGO POWERS is a legend who has played with so many underground greats and who it’s nice to see is finally beginning to get a little more recognition. he just released a book, which is on my christmas list, documenting his time through THE GUN CLUB, THE CRAMPS, NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS and more, and anyone who comes out alive on the other side of a history like that is definitely worth listening to. further, kid congo’s got a unique perspective as a gay man who was out and proud from very early on, even when the punk and underground scenes were nowhere near as tolerant as they’d eventually become. you can definitely hear his CRAMPS years in this track, but kid congo’s got his own thing going on that’s worth considering on it’s own.
sea power | be gone (demo)
SEA POWER (formerly british sea power) have picked up a lot of new fans in recent years because of their score for disco elysium, which is undeniably great, but, for me, open season is always going to be the record to beat. the original release is pretty unassailable, but, as is their way, sea power also tends to release their demo and early versions, and they’re always a delight to pick through. this version of be gone has the lovely melody of the original, but is quieter and doesn’t have the same bombastic, big sound that the initial release did. if you like listening to how songs can evolve for a band from when they’re written to when they’re recorded, this one’s a great example.
lee fields | i should have let you be
LEE FIELDS IS BACK! LEE FIELDS IS BACK!
of course, he didn’t go anywhere, but we’ve lost so many soul and R&B greats in recent years that it’s always a relief to see one continuing to put out great work. fields got back together with daptone records this year to release this, and the whole record is fantastic. this song has his signature sound with a really interesting, almost beatles-esque bridge right in the middle of it. the whole record’s fantastic and a well-welcomed return and i can’t recommend it enough.
reigning sound | falling rain
i’ll never not be bummed out that cartwright called an end to the REIGNING SOUND before i got the chance to catch them live, though cartwright’s an industrious and restless guy who’ll have something new and exciting to check out soon enough. this one comes from shattered, which wasn’t my favorite record when it came out, but has really, really grown on me. i mean, i recommend literally every single one of their records, but if you’ve got to start somewhere, shattered isn’t a bad place to start.
murder by death | my evergreen
given that it’s a thanksgiving playlist, a few christmas songs are bound to find their way in, and, well, would you look at that, here’s one of them! MURDER BY DEATH are one of my all-time favorites, and it’s entirely in character that they’d put together a christmas record. all of it is fun, but this cover of the SQUIRREL NUT ZIPPERS my evergreen manages to take what was, originally, a good-enough christmas effort and elevate to something profoundly nostalgic, bittersweet, and lovely. my partner and i have a hard rule about not playing this one until after thanksgiving, but i feel like we’re close enough that you should get to start working it into your holiday playlists now.
that’s it for this list; i’ll have another one up on tuesday to continue the thurday cooking extravaganza.

Ahh. The last holdout returns ta' goodness. I can now say quite honestly that I'm enjoyin' every current Batman comic book.
Granted, I wanted Zdarsky ta' do this at the end a' Gotham War, an' havin' Batman first be evil for way too long, then miss the point fer way too long, before finally gettin' it in the finale was not necessarily fun, but we got there! An' Zdarsky delivered, this was exactly what I needed fer catharsis at the end a' the Zur-En-Arrh/Failsafe storyline.
So who's goin' evil in 2030? I say Tim. Tim's due. Or Stephanie, I don't think she's ever gone evil.

2/29/24: Home Again! by Doc Watson
Very pleasant little americana album.
There's only about four instruments in this album; there's Watson's voice, his acoustic  guitar, his banjo, and his harmonica, and only two are ever used at a time. He has a nice voice and in conjunction with his very clean, virtuosic playing makes for simple but nice-to-listen to music. He mixes it up quite a bit two, with some more bluegrassy music in 'Katie Morey,' some traditional voice+guitar storytelling in songs like 'Froggie Went A-Courtin'' or 'Matty Groves', and some instrumentals/solo vocal songs, my favorite being 'Rain Crow Bill' where he goes absolutely ham on a harmonica for 1:47.
The lyrics are all quite charming, especially in the previously mentioned story-songs. I do feel betrayed by 'Froggie Went A-Courtin''; not only were the lyrics on spotify completely wrong, but they tricked me into thinking the song had a happy ending, dammit! This album does seem to have some weird mis documentation to it; on top of the incorrect lyrics the site says it's from 1996 which, while maybe providing some comedic value, is clearly a typo (the real date is 1966). Hell, looking up; 'Winter's Night' isn't even the right name! It's 'A-Rovin' on a Winter's Night!' Someone had it out for this record, apparently.
That's all! See you tomorrow for! Something!

Independent review of a $14.5 billion inland rail project led by former energy chief Kerry Schott
The federal government has chosen the former head of Australia’s Energy Security Council to scrutinize its controversial 1,700-kilometre project. the main points: Dr. Kerry Schott will examine the planning, governance and delivery of the Inland Rail project The Inland Railroad was first funded under the coalition government Landowners fear that the new bridges may make flooding events on or near their property worse Dr Kerry Schott will lead the independent review of the $14.5 billion rail plan connecting Melbourne to Brisbane. More than $2 billion has already been spent on an inland rail project that aims to meet growing freight demands on the densely populated East Coast. Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King described Dr Schott, who was also the managing director and CEO of Sydney Water, as a “highly respected and trusted leader” with experience in both government and business. “It will conduct a comprehensive, independent review of the Inland Railroad and make recommendations to ensure this nationally important project is successfully delivered,” King said. “The review will give the government a clear view of what the problems are and the way forward.” Brisbane to Melbourne Inner Rail alignment map as of April 2021. Labor has promised a review as part of its election bid, after years of complaints from farmers and residents along the proposed path. Dr Schott will look at the planning, governance and delivery of the project, which is run by the government-owned Australian Railways. It will also review the route selection process to confirm that the design “considered broader economic impacts and benefits”. Some landowners have warned that the current plan to raise and build embankments through the properties may make flood events worse. Inland Rail Facts: The 1,700-kilometre railway will connect Melbourne to Brisbane through central Victoria, western New South Wales and southern Queensland. The project will upgrade 1,100 kilometers of the existing railway line and build 600 kilometers of new track to connect the existing railway corridors Each week, dozens of trains of up to 1.8 kilometers in length will enable them to travel at speeds of more than 110 kilometers per hour through three states carrying food, equipment, white goods, steel, paper and coal. Each train has the capacity to carry the same volume of freight as 110 double B . trucks While the Inland Railroad has been talked about for decades, significant funding for the project, worth just $8.4 billion, was secured in 2017 by former Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce. Total investment in the project has since grown to more than $14 billion, and a Senate report last year said it could end up costing more than $20 billion. The Inland Rail Project had the potential to provide a long-term boost to regional economies. The federal finance minister, Senator Katie Gallagher, said more than $2.7 billion in contracts have been awarded to more than 400 local suppliers and businesses. “The program has also provided employment to more than 3,600 local residents in the communities around Parkes and Narromine, and further north in Morey, which in turn has strengthened local economies,” said Ms. Gallagher. The terms of reference for the review included examining how the route was chosen, and confirming that it was ‘fit for purpose’. It will be completed by early next year, King said. "Breve" retrospectiva 🤭
Afinal, tô contando a história.
Obrigado, 2019.
Obrigado, 2010 a 2019.

Entrevista: Belfast Telegraph
Max possui o cabelo todo loiro e roupas ousadas.

13.05.19 - camino 4
Cizur menor ate Puente La Reina - 24km (no app 19km) - 7:15-13:00
-
Sou tiaaaaaaa! Baby wes! Minha irma americama katie teve o baby n2! Ja estou apaixonada. Fui dormir aguniada pq tava com internet ruim e as fotos nao baixavam e eu ainda nao sabia o nome do bebe.
Eu tenho so um bastao e uso mais pra me dar suporte pro meu lado podre (esquerdo). Ate que meu lado direito doi.
-
-
Licao do dia: energia eolica realmente faz barulho.
-
-
Eu nao sei dizer nao.
-
Hoje eu fui caminhando e me dando "treats" (recompensas), igual cachorro.
-
Cheguei no albergue, aquela rotina (check in, banho, lavar roupas, procurar um supermercado), as meninas dos meu quartos tinham feito comida e me chamaram, dps eu fui com um outro grupo de pessos conhecer a cidade, fomos no super, bebemos do lado do rio, agora to fazendo uns ovos cozidos pra amanha, e o pessoal ta jogando carta.
-
E eu fiquei mal. Mas me doi o coracao.
-
-
•Ref Padres Reparadores, Plaza Félix Huarte, 31100 Puente la Reina, Navarra, Spain
•5 euros

The Lakers will be fine. The Clippers will be scary
Tumblr media
Champs. | Photo by Harry How/Getty Images
We have that and more in Wednesday’s NBA newsletter.
In their first regular season game together, LeBron James and Anthony Davis looked good with glimpses of great and stretches where improvement is needed. LeBron had a tough, Kobesque shooting night (7-19) and turned the ball over too much (five) but had moments of glory, and Davis shot just 8-21 from the floor while putting up a solid 25-10-5 line. The Lakers lost the opener 112-102 as Danny Green was the only player on the team that really performed well outside of Davis.
The problem for the Lakers on opening night wasn’t really the Lakers. It was the Clippers.
Kawhi Leonard didn’t miss a beat off his Finals MVP performance (30 points on 10-19 shooting in 31 minutes). Lou Williams looked as Lou Williams as ever. Montrezl Harrell was so good off the bench it made you wonder whether he might actually challenge Lou for the Sixth Man award. Patrick Beverley was in full Patrick Beverley mode. Most of all, the Clippers’ defense was really tough.
In Game 1 of the season. Without Paul George.
The Lakers will figure out how to best use LeBron and Davis together, and Frank Vogel will eventually stop using his centers so much after the first few minutes of the game, no matter Davis’s opposition to playing center himself.
Will they figure out how to beat a Clippers team that has more two-way weapons than the Fortnite island? Will anyone?

Links
Pascal Siakam had a monster game, and Fred VanVleet finished the job as the Raptors opened their title defense with a victory over New Orleans. The Raptors’ rings are pretty, pretty good.
The SB Nation team made a bunch of NBA predictions. I picked the Lakers to win the title as a psychic hedge, really.
Michael Pina on the value of Jaylen Brown’s enormous extension. Matt Ellentuck grades each player extension.
Me on the promise and potential of the Lakers vs. Clippers rivalry. That first game sure felt like the start of something special.
Chinese state T.V. didn’t air NBA opening night and Tencent streamed only Lakers-Clippers. How’s this soft battle working out? Meanwhile, Shaq becomes the first prominent NBA personality to defen Daryl Morey and criticize China. The contrast between Shaq’s comments and those of Charles Barkley were absolutely striking.
Fred VanVleet’s one rule for disrespecting the NBA champ Raptors is perfect.
Here’s the fearless Graham MacAree on the reason the Astros felt comfortable acquiring a domestic abuser and then gloating about that decision in the faces of female reporters critical of said acquisition. You may think this is about baseball, but then the Lakers had injured DeMarcus Cousins sitting on their bench on opening night. Two months ago, there was an arrest warrant out for Cousins on domestic violence charges after alleged recordings of Cousins threatening his son’s mother were published by TMZ. The Lakers said the NBA had taken over the investigation. Why is Cousins sitting on the bench? Has he had any contact with the Mobile police? Why is this being normalized? If the warrant and charges have been resolved, the Lakers and the NBA should announce that they have been resolved. Otherwise, given the history of how seriously pro sports teams treat this issue (not very seriously), we’re left to assume the worst.
The Pelicans say Zion Williamson’s weight didn’t cause his knee injury.
Steve Kerr says Klay Thompson is unlikely to play this season. I don’t really believe that. I’m not sure Kerr does either.
We’re very excited to bring FanPulse to the NBA this season. You sign up , you get a weekly ballot, you fill it out, we collect the results and release the Pulse of the Fans to the world. Sign up! Give us your Pulse!
Katie Baker on Lou Williams.
Kevin O’Connor on the four title contenders.
Folks, get that coffee or tea or other stimulant. NBA opening week is relentless and beautiful. Love it and each other. And, of course, be excellent to each other.

off the rack #1187
Monday. November 6, 2017
I've reached the age where there is no avoiding life's less appealing realities, death and taxes. Reading provides a pleasant respite but I can't hide behind a comic book forever. Lucky for me I have a lot of other good things like family and friends to balance out the bad.
Charles Soule  and Mark Waid are the two writers dominating the comic books that I took to read last week. I'm still a big art fan but bad writing can still turn me off a book even if it's drawn by one of my favourite artists. Lucky for me it seems like my favourite artists only work with good writers.
Power Pack #63 - Devin Grayson (writer) Marika Cresta (art) Chris O'Halloran (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). I enjoyed the original series when it hit the racks in 1984 and thought it was cool that June Brigman modelled the kids' parents after Louise and Walt Simonson. Marika Cresta's art is really nice in this one shot and she doesn't change the look of the kids much as an older Katie recounts a fight with a super villain in a story she wrote for a school writing assignment. I liked this a lot and would recommend it for younger readers.
Superman #34 - Peter J. Tomasi & Patrick Gleason (writers) Ed Benes, Doug Mahnke & Jack Herbert (art) Dinei Ribeiro (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Part 2 of "Imperius Lex" starts off with the wily Lex Luthor pulling the old switcheroo to weasel out of being proclaimed the new ruler of Apokalips. Then we catch up with how Lois and Jon are dealing with being stuck on this unforgiving planet. I really like how feisty mother and son are.
Archie #25 - Mark Waid (writer) Audrey Mok (art) Kelly Fitzpatrick (colours) Jack Morelli (letters). The end of this issue is a classic cliffhanger that will result in a lot of drama for Archie and the gang. I hear that Betty and Jughead are romantically involved in the TV show. Sacrilege, I say.
Captain America #695 - Mark Waid (writer) Chris Samnee (art) Matthew Wilson (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). I'm giving good old Cap another look see because it's being done by the team that made Daredevil a delight to read for quite a while. This issue recaps the origin and has Captain America fighting white supremacists. I like the message that everybody can be a hero so I'm putting this title back in the reading line up.
Batman #34 - Tom King (writer) Joelle Jones (art) Jordie Bellaire (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). I love the Cat and the Bat fighting together. When Batman's ex shows up things get real. There's an emphasis on family in this story and people are being forced to behave in ways that they would not normally. That is what is making this fun for me.
Paper Girls #17 - Brian K. Vaughn (writer) Cliff Chiang (art) Matthew Wilson (colours) Jared K. Fletcher (letters). This series goes way out on a limb here by including time travelers from 70,000 AD. I'll be surprised if mankind makes it to 3000 AD what with the extreme weather changes and global political turmoil happening. I hope we get to the end of this story before the end of the world as we know it.
Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #6 - Chip Zdarsky (writer) Michael Walsh (art) Ian Herring (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). I only read this issue for the super big secret reveal that I was told was in here and yes, I agree that it was a monumental moment in Spider-Man history. I liked how Chip captured the emotions of both Peter and Jonah as they argued about power and responsibility. This issue impressed me enough to put this title back in the reading line up.
Batman White Knight #2 - Sean Murphy (writer & artist) Matt Hollingsworth (colours) Todd Klein (letters). This Joker versus Batman story for mature readers is super cool. The appearance of the Harley Quinns took me by surprise. Harleen Quinzel is a lovely piece of eye candy.
Star Wars: Darth Vader #7 - Charles Soule (writer) Giuseppe Camuncoli (pencils) Daniele Orlandini (inks) David Curiel (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). This issue sets up a big conflict for Vader that involves an old Jedi and a mysterious secret. Hints like that will make me rush to the racks in 2 weeks to pick up the next issue.
Astonishing X-Men #5 - Charles Soule (writer) Ramon Rosanas (art) Nolan Woodard (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). The Shadow King is winning the battle to possess the souls of the X-Men but Charles has a plan. I'm curious to see if Professor X will come back from the dead after this.
Avengers #673 - Mark Waid (writer) Javier Pina with Paco Diaz (art) Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Worlds Collide part 3. It's the Avengers and the Champions versus the High Evolutionary and his Ani-Men. What's going to happen to Falcon and Viv Vision in the hands of the big bad guy is what's going to get me to read part 4 when Champions #14 hits the racks in 2 weeks.
Spider-Man #234 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Oscar Bazaldua (art) Justin Ponsor (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Sinister Six Reborn part 1. Anybody can be a super villain with the proper attire. I had to search way back in my memory banks and Google the guy to make sure, to ID the mysterious gent that gathers together the new Sinister Six. Miles is going to be busy soon and that's not even considering the drama that Bombshell junior might start bringing.
Batman: The Devastator #1 - Frank Tieri (plot) James Tynion (words) Tony S. Daniel (pencils) Danny Miki (inks) Tomeu Morey (colours) Tom Napolitano (letters). It's an obvious choice for a Batman Doomsday mash up if the objective is to kill Superman. It's what Doomsday Bat does next that makes this issue interesting. These Metal one shots are okay but they do not entice me to read any of the regular DC books that tie into the main story. I don't think I would even read these if I wasn't a Batman fan.
