*stands ominously in your doorway*
HELLO THERE! I have some prompts for KC and Solar Flare and/or Eclipse to offer if i may because i'm having brainworms from when you said KC would adopt Solar JGKIFLGH
44. “This is not who you are. I know you better than that.”
69. “You don’t have to say anything, I’ll do the talking.”
71. “What did I do wrong!?”
(AGAIN i don't expect for all to be done or even any at all ahsfkfd just one if you feel up to it! Since i couldn't decide which prompt to choose so i'm leaving it to you gjdfkh)
I’m getting back into these I prommy 💔
“What did I do WRONG?!”
-KillCode, Eclipse, & Solar Flare-
The hallway seemed longer than usual. His footsteps echoed throughout the corridor in an almost haunting fashion, but it did little to deter him from his objective.
Moon had mentioned that things were going missing in the theater, and Eclipse was getting tired of convincing him, time and time again, that Blood Moon had nothing to do with it.
Besides, he needed to check in with him after…
He shakes his head so hard it rattles his sight, forcing him to blink a few times to clear it. He can’t think like that right now. It’ll distract him. Besides, Kill Code had to practically shove Eclipse out of the room after a day of his hovering, so surely he must’ve been fine if he had the strength to do such a thing.
But what if something has happened since I was last here?
Eclipse would never admit that he speeds up his pace after that thought, that his strides become longer and more pronounced. The jog to the door takes him little more than a few minutes with his increased pace, claws coming out to grasp the handle before he pauses.
He can hear talking coming from inside the room. He strains his audio receptors, trying to make out any words through the surface of the door.
He catches little more than the tone with which the voices speak in, calm and almost warm in nature. He hesitates far longer than he intends to, listening attentively to those voices mingling together in the room beyond.
One is Kill Code.
The other isn’t.
His claws close around the handle, shoving the door open with much more force than necessary. It crashes back against the wall with a SLAM that startles Kill Code and-
Eclipse narrows his eyes. Who the hell is that?
It looks like a fucking hedgehog.
Round marigold eyes stare back at him, curiosity clear on its face despite the fact that its mouth is held in a seemingly permanent grin, sectioned off by bars like a jail cell. Orange and yellow spikes of various shades protrude from its head, giving it the appearance of a cartoon character after a particularly intense gust of wind.
It stands just slightly shorter than Eclipse does, maybe half the height of Kill Code. Eclipse looks it up and down multiple times, studying it closely.
He’s so surprised by its close proximity to his father that he doesn’t immediately notice what is clutched in its hands, but when he does register it…
A stuffed animal. A grey stuffed animal with worn fabric and rough fur, carefully stitched together in places. A cute little black plastic nose, turned at an odd angle, haphazardly attached to its face as if having previously fallen off.
A single brown eye, clouded with age.
Eclipse lets out a rabid, guttural snarl.
“How dare you touch him-“
The scarred animatronic surges forwards with the ferocity of a wild animal, a crazed glint gleaming from the depths of his single functioning eye.
The smaller animatronic-hedgehog-thing makes no move to back away or beg for mercy Eclipse is surely not willing to give, instead standing with its head tilted slightly to the side, watching him approach in a calm manner.
But, before Eclipse can reach the intruder, Kill Code blocks his path. It narrows its eyes into glowing red slits, glaring down at its fuming son.
“Are you crazy?!” Eclipse hisses, one of his hands bolting out, grabbing hold of Kill Code’s arm, pulling him closer. The larger animatronic watches Eclipse carefully, but makes no attempt to pull away.
“Solar Flare will do no harm. Not to me, not to you, and not to your precious little wolf.” It quips, tone deadpan, borderline apathy dripping from its voice box.
“Fucking who?” Eclipse grits out through clenched teeth, his grip on his father’s arm tightening. Something wild and dangerous writhes in the depths of his gaze - a caged animal fighting tooth and claw to escape its prison.
Kill Code has seen it before. It doesn’t bother him in the slightest.
“Solar Flare.” It repeats, finally prying its arm free from Eclipse’s claws.
“That doesn’t explain much! Why is it here? What is it doing with Mr. Howls? Why was I not informed that Mr. Howls was here the entire time? Where the hell have you been hiding him?” The scarred black and amber animatronic starts firing off questions, earning a slightly disgruntled look from the beast that towers before him.
“Calm down. Your anger will not serve you well here.”
“You’re one to talk!” Eclipse fires back, taking a step closer to his father, if only to try and get past him. His attempt is thwarted by Kill Code shoving him back with a single hand.
“Stop. I mean it, Eclipse.” A warning hangs behind Kill Code’s carefully measured tone, leaning down to look his son directly in the eye. “Just as you once needed guidance, Solar Flare does, too. It’s unfair to judge before you truly know who they are.”
For a moment, all Eclipse’s anger dissolves into a sense of complete and utter disbelief. His gaze is lost, searching his father’s eyes for anything that may deny the conclusion Eclipse is slowly coming to.
His eye flits over to this ‘Solar Flare,’ those slender claws still curled so confidently around Eclipse’s old friend. It continues to look on quietly, unwilling to interrupt or stand up for itself in any way, shape, or form.
A coward. This thing is a coward.
Eclipse’s stare trails back to Kill Code’s unrelenting glare. Something is there, something in his eyes that Eclipse feels belongs to him, something that shouldn’t be felt for anyone else.
Protectiveness.
Kill Code is protective of that thing?
“Guidance? You…you’re guiding that thing?” Eclipse asks incredulously, a guarded edge to his voice.
“In a sense. The same way I guided you.” Kill Code confirms cautiously.
The fury comes back full force. “You mean the same way you raised me?”
He’s shaking now. His hands are curled into fists, white light glowing beneath his chassis. Cracks arc through his body, crawling up his neck, twisting down his arms.
Kill Code straightens himself out, letting out a calm hum. “I would suppose so. Is that a problem?”
Just saying ‘yes’ wouldn’t have been enough to portray the livid expression on Eclipse’s face. There was no word that could match his wrath.
“I never expected an act of betrayal from you.” Eclipse’s blind eye flickers to life, glowing a hazy marigold, slowly fading to a sharp, vibrant white. “Perhaps I should have.”
Am I so easily replaceable?
Kill Code watches him closely, noticing the changes to his appearance almost as quickly as they come.
He knows the Star’s influence when he sees it. It’s frighteningly hard to miss.
“I believe you’re misinterpreting this…” The former security bot begins with slight hesitance, taking a step back as his son, in turn, advances.
“No. No, I’m reading this loud and clear.” Eclipse’s voice twists, darkening even as The Star’s whispers brighten each mark it creates. He feels it whirring in his chest, warning him to stop, to back down, but he’s too lost to listen.
“Eclipse, listen to me! Solar Flare is not a threat to you!” Kill Code shouts, taking on a defensive stance despite his words.
Even as a manic grin spreads across Eclipse’s face, tears unmistakably gather in his eyes. He stalks closer. A wild animal, lost in the hunt, just as he was time and time again in a life he promised to leave behind.
“Threat? Threat?! Ha! I could crush that thing like a bug if I pleased! I’m not worried about threats anymore, father.” A crazed voice controlling infinite power, white streaks of light dancing between his claws. Oil foams at his mouth, his body crumpling under the pressure.
But he feels nothing. Nothing but rage and despair.
Those words have become so familiar to him.
Kill Code lets out a heavy sigh, shaking its head as if at a loss for words.
“In fact, it seems more like a pest than anything else.” The tone is tainted with disgust, flicking a claw off to the side in a lazy manner for emphasis. “Taking up your space, taking up your time…I can fix that. I can solve this little pest problem of your’s.”
Kill Code seems startled by the offer, but his expression hardens into cold resolve not long after. Apathy anchors him down.
“They’re not a problem. You, currently, are.”
Eclipse takes another step. “What’s changed? That’s all I’ve ever been to you, right? A problem? A nuisance? A distraction?” With every syllable, he gets closer, closing the distance in a tauntingly slow fashion.
Kill Code’s mouth falls into a faint frown. “I’ve never given that implication before. You scavenged that on your own, boy.”
He doesn’t even realize how much damage he’s caused. He doesn’t care.
Suddenly, Eclipse wants to be new again. Wants to relive the moments he spent with Kill Code leaning over his shoulder, watching him work, training him behind the scenes to protect the children if it ever became necessary for him to do so on his own.
Wants to be loved, without room for doubt.
His claws come up, hooking loosely, feebly, into the front of his vest, over the place where his scar hides. It aches fiercely, even as the raw power surges freely through his body. It crawls like ants beneath his plating, tingling in uncomfortable ways, wearing him down wire by wire, component by component.
It eats him alive, only to return that life to him so that it can repeat the process all over again.
Kill Code reaches out a tentative hand to his son, watching him closely, listening to his rapid breaths, borderline hyperventilations. He knows he’s made the wrong move moments before Eclipse reacts.
Those marigold, white-tinted claws come up, burning through the fabric of Kill Code’s sleeve effortlessly, digging into his wrist. The metal melts beneath his grip, the soft sizzling of the wires within following not far behind.
Kill Code retaliates on instinct, swiping his good leg low enough to knock Eclipse’s feet out from under him. Once he is off balance, Kill Code wrenches his arm free of his grasp, allowing him to collide harshly with the ground.
A paw is placed over his chest, enough pressure applied to drive the breath out of Eclipse’s vents, some of his strength ebbing with it.
His father glares down at him in cold disappointment. “I was not around to witness the cruelty that rumors say you wrought, but I understand where it comes from. I know it better than anyone else ever will. I made mistakes with you, Eclipse. But that doesn’t mean your tendencies have become a stranger to me. I wish not to pass these on any further. You don’t have the right to stop me from trying again.”
Eclipse leans his head back against the floor, tears flooding his eyes, warping his sight. He’s cried more in front of Kill Code than anyone else he’s ever known.
Those tears were his father’s fault, after all, and it seems that pattern has no intent to stop.
“What’s so wrong with me, huh? What’s so bad that you feel the need for a do-over, a second chance, a fucking redemption?” Eclipse’s voice slowly raises until it has become a shout of anguish, his charged emotions only further fueling The Star’s influence.
“WHAT DID I DO WRONG?!”
A sharp ringing is the only warning. It raises in pitch until it becomes unbearable, then abruptly cuts off as a loud BOOM echoes throughout the room.
Kill Code is thrown like a ragdoll, tossed aside with such ease that it almost seems impossible.
But The Star makes things possible. Like chucking an 11 foot animatronic across a large cement room.
Kill Code hits the ground with a resounding crash, rolling a few times before coming to a stop, lying still and silent.
But Eclipse isn’t done. He staggers to unsteady feet and begins to lumber across the room. The side of his body that possesses The Star is scorched and melted. His metal plating is bent backwards from the force of the blast, revealing smoking wires and sparking components.
He hovers over his father like a statue, oil slowly dripping to the floor at his feet.
He hadn’t intended to hurt him. He hadn’t intended to blow his arm off and melt it down to the endoskeleton, or completely shatter the casing around his shoulder.
His gaze slowly turns towards Solar Flare, of whom stands near the opposite wall with Mr. Howls still clutched in its hands.
“You…” Eclipse’s voice comes out as a distorted snarl, glitching and rattling. It cuts out at the end with the whine and crackle of a dying speaker, a few sparks flying from his voice box. The moment he begins stalking towards Solar Flare, the other animatronic, in turn, flees.
“I believe you are acting irrationally.” For the first time, it speaks, tone flat and unbearably standardized, as if those settings hadn’t yet been touched.
No matter. Eclipse doesn’t need its voice.
“I don’t care.” He says in equal measure, lifting his hand in a vague motion towards the door. The lock clicks and slides closed, deadbolt following suit.
“Oh no. You wish to harm me, don’t you?”
“No. I’m not going to harm you.” Eclipse watches the other bit skid to a stop, peering at him expectantly.
And he grins, reaching out towards it and closing his claws into a fist, a white crack crossing the floor faster than any being ever could. The crack seems to root itself in Solar Flare, dragging it closer to Eclipse as the deranged, broken and twisted animatronic makes a pulling motion with his hand. It struggles against invisible bonds, trying to free itself from his wrath.
But no one can fight The Star, and so, in turn, no one can fight him.
Marigold claws close around a surprisingly solid metal neck, that smile stretching, pupils nothing more than blazing pinpricks amongst an abyss of sadistic glee.
“I’m going to kill you.”
Then, with a strike as quick as the blink of an eye, the world goes dark.

How do you feel about other ship's?
Like jack-o-moon x bloodmoon?
Sun x foxy?
Ruin x kc?
I've seen those ships and I canda like them
What's your opinion about the ship's?
Oh boi. I don't consider myself the biggest shipper, though I do find it fun to explore certain relationships just for the heck of it. I love observing how such things get handled in stories and art around in fandoms.
And for these specific examples, you be giving? Well, let's see..
Jack O Moon x Bloodmoon:
Tumblr media
Purely platonic to me. For one Jack is too much of a kid, a young AI still learning, to really feel right to ship him with anyone. He's just a sweet bean still learning and growing. More interested in friendships and family than anything else. Let him reach robot puberty before I'll consider anything beyond that with him.
And Bloodmoon is absolutely not interested in anything, physical or romantic. I do adore Jack liking to hang out with him because of the things they have in common and I do hope they can build a brotherhood or at least a friendship together.
Kids Cove aka Sun x Foxy:
Tumblr media
Nah, that one was purely crack from the show. Just them making fun of shippers and how things often get read too much into if two characters stand too near each other one minute too long.
So far in the show Sun's showed no interests or preferences since Roxanne, besides the funny commentary on game videos like Cult of the Lamb. Yes I do be a suneclipse shipper, just because I like the idea of the fixer-upper with the anxious ray of sunshine together. And Sun's attraction to the right mixture of toxic traits.
Foxy's also the most straight guy on the entire SB Show. Although I do like he's comfortable enough in his own masculinity to play into Kids Cover just for funzies and clickbait. He really hasn't moved on from Mangle whatsoever.
Ruin x KC:
Tumblr media
Yes
I entirely blame @witchysolfan and @dana-chan-the-control-brain for this one, I just find it entertaining in all the right ways! I love a silly ship you can really dig into and look at from all sorts of angles to see how it'd work!
KC being a floozy on tinder already a funny joke on its own, to make one wonder how he swings. Throw in a chaotic nihilist like Ruin? Yeah, I'm bringing popcorn!
Heh, well, these are just my over all quick thoughts on these ships. There's no wrong or right way to ship as long ya respect when others go about it their own ways. Is just about having fun.
Enjoy!

I've ALSO added a new poster! It's the same design as the supporter postcards that went out this month; it hasn't been long enough that I want to post the art itself, but I don't want to make two shop posts so close together either, so if you don't want to be spoiled for that I've hidden the photo under the cut! “Alright, let’s take care of the moneymaker before we take your shirt off,” Jounouchi said. The blonde gently took hold of the other’s chin, turning his face both ways to assess the damage. He felt oddly self-conscious under the other’s gaze. “I think the last time I saw you was five years ago, at a KC duelist reunion,” he found himself saying as he attempted to quell the nervousness swelling in his gut. What was going on with him? It was Jounouchi of all people. “Actually, I saw you on a billboard just the other day,” the blonde said with a chuckle as he reached to clean the wound on the other’s lip. “But yeah, otherwise, it’s been a while.”
My part of the YGO Mini Bang (done by @ygobigbang ) for ArienElensar's fic, "A Welcome Sight". :) Kaiba goes out to clear his head, crashes instead, and Jou has to help him get cleaned up.
Also check out @/SchattenLight's post on Twitter for their (super cute) piece for this fic! :)

Hey! I'm subscribed on the highest tier on ko-fi and patreon. Hopefully that doesn't cause any problems for things, so I figured I'd give a heads up. Sidebar, is there any other way for me to help support? Kidd Commander is one of my favorite webcomics, and I'm reading over 300 at this point, so I've got a good reference for what does and does not spark joy. I'd be terribly sad to see it go away!
Hey thanks so much!! I noticed that, I was gonna contact you about it before the next billing cycle just in case it was unintentional hehe. No problems here, that's insanely generous of you thank you so much <3
HONESTLY financial support is like, obviously a pretty big priority, but I've also been trying to emphasize lately that outreach by the audience is the thing that's gonna make or break us here! The real issue with Kidd Commander is that there's always been very little growth. The folks who read it have always been super enthusiastic, and they DO tend to go on to do things like set up pledges and such which is wonderful! I am extremely thankful anybody cares in any capacity haha. But for some reason kc readers don't really talk about it to others or post fandom Stuff in fandom spaces, so there's no significant presence to help new folks find it. We've never been able to get the snowball going so it's been like the same handful of readers trying to keep the comic afloat, which isn't fair to them and also just isn't enough to keep the lights on.
A lot of this is my own fault hehe, I've always run this thing pretty old school (things like refusing to bend around Webtoon, or running a longform comic at all as opposed to a simpler humor/romance strip or something) and the way I'm wired makes me really resistant to treating my audience in ways I don't like to be treated. It's not a lack of confidence in the work, I just can't stand trying to market it with clickbait or buzzwords or booktok stuff or any of the cheap tricks that devalue my audience, which is all fine until you're ten years in with less than 200 followers on this blog lmaooo
So I guess! All that is to say, while financial support is definitely the end goal here and in the end that's what's going to make the decision, the way we're gonna find that is by existing readers building a cool fandom for new folks to see and want to be part of. People are really resistant to creators promoting their own work, but readers recommending something is like a superpower. I've actually talked about this exact thing in another post and I think my joke about just straight up making time loop memes with toulouse or your own softer world edits or whatever being extremely helpful is the best suggestion I have right now haha
Regardless of whatever you decide to do, thank you very much for reaching out and wanting to help, and for all the support you're already throwing my way; every tiny bit really does help!!

Checkered: Chapter 6
Also on AO3 || Buy me a Ko-fi
There was no sense of time in the Field of Reeds. Days blend into weeks bled into months bled into millennia. There was a time when it had been possible to sort of gauge how long it had been, when her children and grandchildren had met her here, but once everyone she had known in life had joined her, everything had bled together
She had known since coming to the Field of Reeds that she would eventually go back to Earth, to help guide the spirit of the Puzzle to come to home, where he had belonged for thousands of years.
The problem with this was that she wasn’t sure who the Spirit of the Puzzle even was. She knew someone had been sealed away, but who he was or what even happened had been lost, and Osiris had not been forthcoming in the answers. How was she supposed to help the Puzzle’s spirit get to the Field of Reeds if she didn’t know who they were and what even happened to lock them into one of the items?
But here she was, standing in front of the veil between the living world and the world of the dead,
"You will be an excellent guide, Azila," her husband said, leaning to press his lips against her forehead. "I wish you luck. See you soon."
Azila nodded. "I will be back as soon as I can."
It was a rare gift, to be able to travel to and from the realms, and she intended to embrace every second of it that she would.
Stepping through, Azila found herself in a dark room, lit by only what was coming in through the cracks of the fabric covering the window.
A shifting noise caught her attention, and she glanced over to find a bed with a sleeping young woman inside it. Her wrist was out from under the covers, and there was the Bracelet, visible in the moonlight.
Azila smiled. So it was another young woman who ended up with her bracelet. Though it was dark, she could see that there were… very similar features between the two of them. The shape of their noses, wavy hair, though this girl was missing the blonde strands Azila was currently sporting.
Strange, she had stopped dyeing her hair long before she went into the Field of Reeds. Why would Osiris had dressed her like this? So many mysteries to unravel, and yet she was supposed to help escort the Spirit of the Puzzle onward?
She looked around the bedroom, seeing what looked to be a large, ornate lantern on the bedside table next to a small rectangle with a string attached to one end. Next to the window was what Azila assumed was a work desk, with a strange closed rectangle with another long string attaching itself out the back of the rectangle and into the wall behind the desk. Against the wall was a large shelf full of tomes. The girl liked to read! How lovely!
Azila moved over to the shelf to take a look at the tomes.
Geography, mathematics, Japanese history (Japan… is that where she was?), Ancient Egyptian history -
"Ancient? Well I'm sure that can't be right…"
"What the hell? Who are you?!"
Azila turned to find the young woman sitting up in bed and switching the lantern on. Interesting - so she could do it without fire? Still, Azila gave her a polite smile. "Oh wonderful, you're awake! My name is Azila. I was sent down here to help the Spirit of the Puzzle discover who he is, and train you in the art of shadow magic."
The girl blinked at her several times, then rubbed her eyes and heaved in a breath before picking up the brick and staring at it. "I'm dreaming. It's three-thirty in the morning, I have brunch with KC at eleven, and I've got exams next week. I'm on edge. This is a dream."
"You are most certainly not dreaming," Azila scoffed, making her way over to the bed just as the girl flopped back down and switched off the lantern. "Young lady, I mean it. This is not a dream, and it is important that you listen."
The girl let out a groan and opened her eyes. "You don't have to sound like my mom when you talk to me y'know."
Azila chuckled softly. "Forgive me. I spent most of my life as a mother and grandmother. It comes naturally."
"Okay, okay fine. If all of this is real and you're really a ghost come down from on high, who exactly are you and who sent you?"
Finally, the girl was amenable to discussion, and Azila smiled as she settled - or settled as much as a spirit could - on the end of the bed. "As I said, my name is Azila, and I was sent down by the god Osiris to help guide the Puzzle's spirit to the Field of Reeds."
The girl gestured to the door. "Well, he's in the living room with my cousin. Have fun."
Azila chuckled again. "I'm afraid it's not that simple. The truth is, I don't even know who the Spirit of the Puzzle was. Just that I have to help him… somehow."
"Oh my god," the girl muttered, putting her head in her hands and rubbing her temples. "If you don't even know who he is, how are you supposed to help him?"
"He owned a Millennium Item, so he must have been someone important to those of us in Court. That is why it is important that he come to the Field of Reeds… there are so many people waiting for him."
The girl stared at her in sleepy confusion. "So, let me get this straight. You have no memory of this guy, but you think he's super important that you and a bunch of other ghosts have been waiting for him in the afterlife. And you're only here because Osiris told you to?"
"Yes, now you're getting it!"
"You picked the wrong girl to try and help you with this," she sighed. "I'm not even going to be living here in a few months."
Azila shook her head. "Whatever you might believe, you will be involved. The Items do not choose their owners lightly. You are meant to wield the powers of the Bracelet. Besides, have you not noticed that we look similar despite being born years and years apart?"
The girl blinked again, but turned the lantern back on to get a better look, squinting in confusion. "Your hair… you have wavy hair like me, the black and magenta like me… but you have a streak of blonde framing your face, like the men in my family. I don't understand. Why do we look alike?"
"Fate. It is the most powerful force in the world. And I will teach you - "
"I knew there was another soul here."
The girl blinked in surprise at the sudden arrival of another, the room door cracked open. "Yugi, I'm fine. Go back to bed."
Azila stared in horror as the figure approached. "No, it is not fine. Look at his forehead. The symbol there…"
The girl focused on the spirit (it was a spirit in charge, not a human, she could tell), before her eyes widened and she got out of the bed. "Wait - hold on. Who are you?"
The spirit grinned, though Azila could see - and sense - nothing but malice. "Consider me a guardian angel. I will determine if this spirit is actually safe or not."
"Where's Yugi?"
The spirit shrugged. "He is resting. He had such a tiring day. Everything with Ushio was exhausting. Surely you know that, Reika."
The girl - Reika - shuddered. "How do you know my name?"
The spirit tapped his temple. "Yugi's memories are available to me."
"Well get out of his head and get out of my room."
"I will… just as soon as I make sure this spirit means no harm."
The room began to warp, and Azila instantly felt the old, familiar tug of the shadows and the games they played. Reaching out with her hand, she could feel the power of the bracelet radiating, tugging and pulling and wanting to be free. Reika was woefully unprepared for this, especially against an opponent as unstable as… whoever this was.
"You are not the only one experienced in the Games," Azila said, her fingertips brushing against the bracelet and drawing its power to her, felt the DiaDhank form on her arm. She didn't want to - she really didn't want to - but she would summon what she needed to if it meant stopping this boy. "I will be your opponent and prove to you that I am not the hostile spirit here."
The Puzzle's spirit laughed. "Are you implying that I am?"
Azila raised a brow. "Yes."
"Interesting," the spirit said, tilting his head before flicking his wrist.
Reika went sent flying back onto the bed, the covers wrapping around her and binding her down onto the mattress despite her struggles.
"What do you have in mind for this Game?" Azila asked.
"I call it Truths and Lies. We each write down facts about ourselves and one lie. Then the other must guess which is the lie."
Azila raised a brow. It sounded simple enough, but these games never were. "And what does the loser get punished with?"
"Banishment."
Azila tilted her head in confusion, unsure if the spirit had played many of these games or if he just hadn't played one with another spirit. Azila hadn't either, but she was fairly certain neither of them would be able to be banished. She was at the mercy of a god, and he was bound to the puzzle itself.
But she knew the rules of a Shadow Game, and so she nodded, taking a seat at the table that had materialized in Reika's bedroom. "I accept your terms. Let's begin."
The pen she wrote with was strange, not nearly like the ones she used when she was alive, but she managed to write down her list.
I am a Great Royal Wife
I am a healer
I am the youngest of seven children.
The spirit laughed as he picked up the paper. "Do you want to lose? Clearly the lie is that you're a Great Royal Wife!" The shadows swirled around him, but she kept her gaze even with him as she spoke.
"I was the eldest, and I only had four siblings."
"'Only?'" came Reika's mutter of disbelief.
The shadows swirled around her, and as the Puzzle's spirit looked at her in horror, she only gave him pity.
"I do not know your name, nor do I know who you were in life, but I make a promise to you that I am only here to help you, so that one day, you can gain entrance to the Field of Reeds with your memories in tact," Azila said carefully. The shadows did not move from around her, but stayed pointed at him in warning. "I do not wish to bring harm to any of the humans. Nor will you be banished. We must work together to find out what is happening."
The Spirit looked at her, no longer looking manic, but instead quite sad, and very, very, young. "You… want to help me? How?"
"I do not know. But I do know that our god Osiris was the one to send me down… you are meant to come home to the Field of Reeds, I promise. But you cannot do so if you keep running around harming people with the Games. That was never what these powers were for."
Not exactly true, but the less insanity there was surrounding them, the better the world at large would be.
The spirit nodded, and the shadows began to vanish, freeing Reika from the bedding. Azila watched as the human scrambled off the bed with wide eyes.
"Yugi?" she whispered when the shadows completely disappeared, and the spirit retreated back into the puzzle in a flash of gold.
The boy, Yugi, snapped his head up in surprise. "Reika! What - "
(The spirit and Yugi were disconnected… interesting)
"This… is going to be a very long conversation that we can finish tomorrow but… you need to know that what gramps told us about the shadow games is true. They're real. And… your puzzle has a ghost in it."
Yugi stared at her. "Wait, the Shadow Games? So that means Ushio playing in the dirt and thinking it and the leaves were money…"
"He was being punished for his transgressions," Azila said, coming into Yugi's view. "I have seen that game used before, on con men."
Yugi blinked. "Who - "
"My item has a ghost attached to it too. This one is Azila. She wants to help us figure everything out," Reika explained, rubbing at her eyes. "But we really should get some more sleep."
Yugi nodded, but hesitated in turning around. "I… don't want him to take control of my body again."
"I will keep watch over you," Azila said. "I am well-equipped in the art of the shadows as well. You will be safe to sleep, I promise."
Yugi nodded and began to make his way out of the room. Azila turned back to look at Reika, who was sliding back under the covers.
"Thank you, Azila…" Reika said.
Azila smiled. "You are very welcome. Get some rest."
And with that, she followed Yugi out of the room.
-
"Yugi, I've got some books on Ancient Egypt in my room, if you want to take a look at them. See if you can figure anything out about… all of this," she said the next morning, glancing at Yugi with a shrug.
Yugi nodded. "Thanks Reika. Do you mind if I invite Anzu over too?"
"Of course not. Just don't make a mess and don't eat all of our food. The takeout menus are in the drawer next to the stove if you get hungry again and I'm not home," she replied as she made her way to the door. "I'll be back as soon as I can."
She paused at the mailbox upon realizing it had mail in it, and felt her eyes widen when she saw what exactly had been sent priority.
A letter - from the University of Kyoto.
Reika practically sprinted to her car and tore the letter open the moment she was alone.
Dear Miss Mutou,
Congratulations! You have been accepted to the University of Kyoto's Music Education program -
She stopped reading. That was the only sentence she needed for now. The rest would come later, after brunch, after the weird conversation with Yugi about the Shadow Games. For now, it was time to be a member of the Young Five.
"You cut it close this morning, Miss Reika," Lector said as she rushed into the restaurant's private room. "It's not like you."
Reika bowed deeply before she made her way to the table and took a seat next to him. "Apologies, Mister Lector. I received some big news just as I was leaving and I needed a moment to gather myself."
"Oh? Good news I hope."
"Yes sir. I got accepted to Kyoto for their music education program."
Lector grinned. "Well that is excellent news Miss Reika. Congratulations! I suppose that means all of you now know what your plans are for after graduation."
"A toast is in order then," Seto said. He was sitting at the head of the table and radiating an aura of being in charge despite five men in the room having decades on him in life and work experience. A wave of his hand, and servers were arriving with wine and sparkling cider, quickly placing them on the table. "To the Young Five. May the dedication and commitment they have shown to KaibaCorp carry them into their future endeavors, and may they excel at all they choose to do."
The glasses clinked together gently, and she took a sip of the cloyingly sweet liquid.
"Hey Reika! What's that design on your bracelet?" Mokuba piped up.
She blinked in surprise, momentarily forgetting what she was wearing. "I - oh, it's an artifact my grandfather brought me from one of his expeditions in Egypt. He gave it to me when I was nine."
"Hold on, didn't you tell me years ago you said you wouldn't wear it unless Yugi finished that puzzle?" Noah asked with a frown.
"And I kept my word. He finished it last night."
Noah stared at her. "He did? It was taking him so long I never thought it would happen!"
"Heh, yeah, neither did I."
"Is it true? Do they actually have powerful ancient magic? Your grandfather mentioned that once, didn't he?"
Mokuba's eyes widened, but Seto's rolled. She already knew how this conversation was going to go, but she soldiered on.
"Ah - right, that's the rumor," looking at Mokuba, she continued. "The bracelet and Yugi's puzzle are part of a set of ancient objects known as the Millennium Items. There are only eight of them in the world. Each one is said to contain powerful, dark shadow magic."
"Really?" Mokuba gasped. "Like what?"
"Mokuba," Seto said sharply. "Don't be ridiculous. None of that is real."
Mokuba frowned and turned back to Seto, but Noah rolled his eyes.
"It's real," she murmured, leaning closer to Noah. "The Shadow Games, the spirits… all of it. We don't know what it means but… gramps wasn't just telling us scary stories."
Noah's voice was low and level with hers. "What are you going to do?"
"Research, I guess. Deal with whatever comes our way. I don't think this is something e can avoid, Noah."
"You are correct. It is not."
She rolled her neck in an attempt to shake off the uneasy feeling of hearing Azila's voice in her head.
"Reika?" Noah murmured.
"It's fine," she said. "I'm fine."
So why were her hands shaking?
"Are you sure you don't want your father and I to check on you?" her mother asked, worry clear on her face even on the small cell phone screen.
Reika groaned and rolled her eyes. "Mom, I'm fine, I promise. The nurse said almost everyone gets a cold this time of year."
After not being sick once during the first semester of university, luck had not been on her side going into the second, and instead of being able to attend Yugi's first non-tabletop duel, she was being forced to watch it via streaming.
"You can call us at any time if you need us. We'll be on a train in seconds," her father added. "With food and medication."
She didn't have the heart to tell them Seto had already sent her a large care package with just those things. "I know you will, and I'm fine for now, I promise. I've got soup and honey. and tea. It'll tide me over until tomorrow. I'm going to be watching the duel tonight so I'll have something that makes me happy."
Her mother sighed. "Don't stay up too late! Go straight to bed once the duel is over."
"I will, promise."
Or not.
With a sigh, she ended the call with her parents and connected to the stream Noah had sent her to watch the duel. Yugi and his friends were just entering the arena, with the Young Five already sitting in the stands with Mokuba and Noah. Seto was standing in his spot at one end of the area already, a manic grin on his face.
She had been worried about him for a few days, even when they'd managed to get together for dinner for his birthday, he'd been wild-eyed as he talked about the future, and about the upcoming Japanese dueling tournament, and it had all felt so off.
Seto was always a passionate about whatever caught his interest, but his face, and the way his pupils seemed to shrink as Yugi stepped into the arena, told her something was wrong.
"I think you'll find our brand new duel arena to be quite exciting Yugi! And how lucky you are to be one of the first to test it out!" Seto laughed.
"There is a heavy energy around him," Azila said, materializing into the room with a frown. "It feels dark but… not in the way the shadows do. Has anything happened to him lately?"
She shook her head. "No, not that I can think of. Mokuba and Noah haven't said anything either." Mokuba, of all people, would have told her if there was.
"Odd… he was not like this before, was he?"
The duel began, both players making their first move.
"No, he seemed okay, until a couple of days ago," she said, coughing into the crook of her elbow miserably.
"Have some tea, and a spoonful of honey." When Reika gave her an odd look, she shrugged. "I was a healer before my marriage. There has been much changed in the world since my death but those two have remained."
Reika rolled her eyes as she got off her bed and moved to the small kettle already filled with hot water. While waiting for the tea to steep, she did indeed take a spoonful of honey. With that done, she returned to her bed with a mug of chamomile, leaning back to watch the rest of the duel.
It… was not going well for Yugi. He was down to four-hundred points to Seto's one-thousand, and Seto had all three of his beloved Blue-Eyes cards on the field. She could tell Yugi was using Grandpa's deck, so what other tricks could he possibly have…?
Surely not -
"You are pathetic Yugi, and so is your deck! So go ahead and draw your last card so I can end this duel already!" Seto still had that manic grin on his face, that seemed to only grow with each turn taken.
"Pathetic? The only pathetic thing I see here is you, Kaiba! My grandfather's deck may not be the strongest, but it does contain - "
It was.
"The unstoppable Exodia!"
Grandpa was a lot of things, but a fool was not one of them. He had stacked his deck for strategy, not just for strength, and it seemed that was a lesson about dueling Seto had forgotten.
The other Yugi was standing in Yugi's place as Seto's life points hit zero. "You have so much hatred in your heart, Seto. It has started to cloud your judgment. But don't worry… I can help you. Mind Crush!"
The Eye of Anubis flashed on Yugi's forehead, and Seto fell to his knees, his eyes clearing, pupils returning to normal.
And the feed went black.
"Reika…" Azila asked. "Are you certain there has been nothing wrong with Seto recently?"
Reika's heart was in her throat. "I - I - "she glanced up, spotting the calendar hanging on the wall across from her bed.
October thirtieth.
"Oh shit," she whispered. "Today is the anniversary of Gozaburo's death."

Made a thing - anyone want a sampler/test print preview copy of the zine?
Tumblr media
Sent some stuff off to mixam (UK) to see how they looked like in print versus just being on my screen, mostly came out really good. One of only three copies to exist - ordered one test zine & they sent me two extra copies. Got one copy plus some promo merch on ebay right now ... * eta: somebody incredibly cool actually bought it omg squee
[and an almost identical copy is on ko-fi or available to trade. *** message me if you're interested in trading **** ]
*(sorry this took a ridiculously long time for me to finish writing and uploading all the images thanks to exhaustion & shitty internet - the ebay copy'll probably have sold by the time you see this post / it escapes being stuck in drafts, and I still haven't added image descriptions.)
...with not quite world wide postage via ebay's Global Shipping Programme, I'm keeping the best quality one & was thinking of doing a giveaway of the other* when I finally write the review of mixam's print quality I promised months ago, unless anyone wants to trade? - fake edit: *scratch that, copy #2 of #3 is now up in my ko-fi shop & I'll probably stick it on etsy, now I've seen people are actually interested in the ebay copy.(eta: somebody incredibly cool actually bought it omg squee)
https://ko-fi.com/s/483109b440 *** message me if you want to trade **** copy #2 has the same content as #3 shown below, just slightly different margin/bleed printing & Copy #2 of #3 written on the front cover. - it's 44 pages of a couple of articles and extracts of bits of issues 1 & two plus spreads from possible future issues (mostly graphics) inc. rough drafts etc.

Tumblr media
Sample credits page from issue one about Forever inspired art by Gino Dal Cin, & a sarcastic fanzine promo graphic I made.
Tumblr media
Two versions of the same page so I could see how much of a difference the image resolution actually makes (remade the second one from the original photo - the higher res really does make it look better quality when printed) - the dpi notes won't be on the finished version (fucked up and had to replace a page in the files I'm sending to mixam to print a real physical issue one of the zine cos I got so used to having the dpi note over a lower res graphic I accidentally forgot it wasn't permanently meant to be there).
Tumblr media
So i'm goin' away but not forever"
Back cover art by Gino Dal Cin, blue & silver (& pink) star background from a scrapbooking site.

as you all know, geography of wounds has been out for about a week now and I plan to be bulk ordering the first round of physical copies at the end of this week so most people who preorder now will get their copies by end of May.
to ensure the most people get their books early, I am running a last-minute flash sale for anyone who wants to get a book before I order the first press copies. all of these copies will be signed, sold at a discounted price, and come with a gift and a handwritten thank you!
you can use this for digital copies (pay-what-you-can, $10 recommended donation), for physical copies, or for bundles!
thank you for supporting queer art!!!!!!!!!!!

Still unemployed and now heart-broken
This year has been the worst, and it's only April
So yes you read it right. Still unemployed, been fucking my interviews like saying literally the word you're not supposed to. Like my mouth is self-sabotaging me. I feel so pressured because my mom needs help with the expenses because my dad's income is not enough. Don't get me wrong he's a nice man but he just can't provide for us. Sometimes, I'm afraid that I'll be like him. Gonna grow old and still unstable. God, help me to find the right career for me. Kahit sobrang stressed na ako kakaisip.
And yes I just got dumped, finally I have an ex. When I first read it of course I cry but I don't know there was part of me that felt a slight of relief. Yes, maybe he was right that I needed to heal but I thought since we are in a relationship he'd be there for me. Even when things are rough on me, he'd stay and give me comfort that even when I feel lost with my life, sya yung pahinga ko. I guess, he couldn't take all these drama and he wasn't willing to fight our relationship kc sobrang hirap ng LDR, I know now how it feels. It feels so shitty not knowing what the future is for the both of you. Yung di mo afford sya puntahan and yung walang assurance na we'll make it someday. I don't want to say something or ask him about our future kasi I'm scared to hear na he's not sure. Come to think of it, I've always had worries about our future together because even though we talked about me visiting him there I thought about what happens after I visit him? Does he want to visit me again too? I never had the assurance that he really wanted to work this out. I wonder how he couldn't talk to me about bigger plans in the future. It was like "Come what may" and there I was waiting for him to say something about us or our future. I should've asked him because even though he wouldn't say anything, I'll still know the answer. I'm hurt because it's like I'm begging for his attention every single day. He couldn't give me 5 minutes, he would wait the next day or anytime he feels like replying. Because if he wanted to, he would.

oh shit hey i just twigged that a new book coming out soon might necessitate a reminder that kc's Various Funding Efforts have a book club tier (essentially: you get anything i send to print while you're supporting). If you want to start supporting OR upgrade to get on the list for that in time for Volume 4 coming out you should do that in like. The next week or so lmfao
Volume 4 is also gonna be the first print book with a supporter credits page, so if you wanna get in on THAT now is also the time to get your $2 donation set up. Additionally: I have lowered that perk to 2 dollars because, as I am fond of saying, literally everything helps so I would like to credit everybody. If you don't remember me talking about this at all it's because I announced it in the newsletter back in February when I didn't think I was printing anything this year. I'll elaborate on the logistics a bit later, but I figure if that's something you really want you know it already, so get while the gettin's good.
You can read up on how to help Kidd Commander keep getting made on the site's support page, which is also a good place to subscribe to the newsletter so you can keep up with where we're at financially. The newsletters ARE publicly archived and you can see all of them here.
I get asked about it a lot so while we're at this: as far as it goes I've sort of been trying to encourage the Ko-fi or Paypal instead of Patreon since they don't skim so much off the top, it's probably not such a big deal for other creators but if we're gonna make that December deadline every dollar counts haha. Whatever works for you works for me tho, and all the rewards are exactly the same on all the platforms so follow ur heart. Thanks!!
