i hope you all know that Knight Flower is giving us women co-conspirators, a noona romance, a woman as the Grand Merchant, another woman who has a side hustle transcribing books, a lot of women engaging in commerce just in general, nation's mom Kim Mi Kyung (in this case an oppressive mother-in-law), an upstanding male lead that secretly supports the hijinks of our female lead, lots of girls and women acting in this series (like - just so many. Sageuks don't normally have a huge female cast and this is giving quantity and variety), a focus on the downtrodden and oppressed, and Honey Lee wrestling with having the hots for a dude she just punched.

so i enjoyed it for the most part and i would definitely recommend. the final episode was a tear fest for me. however i felt they could’ve handled the topic of su*c*de differently. it essentially said “committing that act is a mistake and it makes you a coward. don’t be selfish and think of your loved ones. like… it just seemed like not the way to go with the overall message

Crushed
Summary: Jun-ho comes to terms with his crush.
Author's note: This is possibly the sweetest thing I've ever written but this couple is literal sugar cubes so I can't be blamed. It's just a drabble of random moments between our whale couple that I couldn't stop thinking about so I had to get the words out 😊
Tumblr media
There's never a right moment to reply to her nonchalant confession that stirred him up something crazy even chasing down the violinist in the rain his heart was still pounding.
She liked him too.
Woo Young-woo, any way he looked at it whether it was straight, flipped, left or right he had fallen for the beautiful attorney. He couldn't ignore the way he longed to catch a glimpse of her at the firm, lingering in spaces that she was known to occupy. And most times sadly leaving when she would not come.
Lunch time was his favorite time of the day, solely because he would have her undivided attention and get to listen to that noninflected voice, at times he wondered if it would be possible to replace Siri's voice with Young-woo. He's certain he would retain every bit of knowledge if her voice was the one teaching him.
Or, not. Because it was difficult to fully listen to her when she was sat in front of him looking so cute as she spewed facts about her beloved whales.
"Are you listening?"
She would check every so often and he could only nod dumbly gaze locked on her smooth skin and those captivating eyes.
With a light hum she was off again, a little adorable human dictionary and he tried to stop ogling her and truly listen this time.
----
"Are you going home?"
"Mmm."
She hums her confirmation, watching the revolution of the door that once stumped her. They've danced through it countless times now, each time his fingers have ached to brush against her skin. But each time he's resisted the urge because it would physically hurt to have her recoil from his touch.
He's not as brave as her to ask for explicit consent. Not yet.
He's terrified of both replies.
Frightened by the possibilities. He's still a man after all, he doesn't trust himself.
"Can I give you a ride then?"
"I always take the train home. The train will arrive in approximately fifte-"
"I know."
He has the train schedule memorized for both mornings and nights, so he can arrive at the same time she does and leave along with her.
"But can I take you home today instead?"
She stops abruptly so he follows. Giving her space to consider his offer, he's asking her to change her routine and he knows now that's a huge deal for her.
He waits patiently, opting to look away so she doesn't feel pressured until finally he sees her turn towards him in his peripheral.
"Okay."
Internally he shouts and pumps his fist but he tapers that excitement in reality and merely shoots a wide grin her way, for a moment they maintain eye contact and he catches the barest of smiles on her pretty lips.
"Here, I'll carry your bag."
This time she looks openly confused, tightening her hold on her trusted brown bag.
"Why? I'm capable of carrying it myself. It is very light and optimal when carried across the shoulder like so, distributing the weight between both shoulders instead of hindering only one."
He lets her finish before replying, "For the same reason I want to drive you home. I want to help you even with things you are capable of doing yourself."
He knows he's still circling around admitting his feelings. He can still hear Attorney Choi's enraged voice in his head from that day. He's just not ready yet, it's not temporary and that makes things even more frightening. He's never been good at long term relationships, people usually get bored of him.
"I'll just carry it to the car." He continues before she can undoubtedly ask him why because he has no liable answer for her.
With an inkling of hesitation she hands said bag to him, her fingers twitching slightly but he makes sure not to make contact gripping to the strap of the bag only.
"Thank you."
She blinks at him, mouth twisted in consternation.
"Should that not be my line? I am the one using you like a pack mule."
His gut hurts from the explosion of laughter that floods out at her very matter-of-fact observation, his head falls back as he chuckles loudly.
"A pack mule?! Is that what I am?"
Young-woo nods instantly.
"You are carrying my belongings and transporting me home. Just like a pack mule."
"Well, I guess I can be that for you. Just for you though. Let's go your father must be waiting for you."
He's grateful for his long legs, easily crossing the parking lot to reach her door and open it for her. He makes sure to cup his hands near her head to prevent any collisions between her head and his car.
He knows his being block headed and possessive but he loves seeing her in his passenger seat, having her beside him.
He gently places her bag in the backseat before pulling out, determined to get her home safe and sound.
Maybe if he does a good job she'll allow him to do this again.
He desperately wants that.
"Jun-ho ssi? Can I ask you a question?"
I like you too. I've liked you since I first saw you. I like everything about you, your smile, your voice, the way you enter a room, how much you love whales, everything that makes you, you. I love it.
"Yes. Go ahead."
He swallows his heart lodged in his throat.
Not yet.
"Have a lot of people asked you out after seeing you drive?"
His stutters at the innocuous question, no clue what she means or how he could possibly respond. What exactly was she trying to imply? Was him driving appealing? He doesn't care about others, but did she find him appealing while driving?
She doesn't wait for him to respond though, turning away whilst mumbling barely loud enough for him to hear.
"They must have. The evidence is right there."
They ride in silence after that. His heart racing the entire way.
-----
It's been a dull day. No sight of Young-woo yet.
Maybe she was sick. He should text her and see if she needed him to bring medicine or soup. He would happily feed her both.
He turns the corner, files in his arms dreading sitting at his desk again. The new part timer isn't very subtle and he can feel her stare on the side of his face as he works. It makes him wonder if Young-woo is aware of him when he's staring at her? He should try to restrain himself, at least at work.
"---he does work here."
"Oh! I'm so thankful, where might I find him? There are so many people here, I'm afraid I'll bother the wrong person."
She's here. His Young-woo. At least in his thoughts he can call her that.
There's a berth of space between her and an older woman, each time the ahjumma moves forward Young-woo instinctively retreats. He immediately moves to help her.
"Well...he's tall and.... handsome."
That makes him grow still. Completely frozen in his spot.
Tall and handsome.
"Handsome? Oh my! How handsome? There are many men like that here."
"No. There are none. He's the only one."
It feels like a sucker punch to the gut, and he almost feels himself gasping for air. It shouldn't matter that she finds someone else handsome, she liked him. She had said so, right to his face. But he can't help the wave of jealousy that crashes inside him, was it possible that she liked him but didn't think he was handsome? Did she only like him for his personality?
He knows it's petty but he can't handle the thought of there being another that she finds handsome.
He wants to find this person and threaten them. On the basketball court he might even be able to rough them up without any suspicion. How dare they catch the eye of his Young-woo?
He's so hurt and distracted by his thoughts that he misses the moment she turns around.
"Ah. There. That's him, Jun-ho ssi."
She ushers the woman his way, motioning with her hands before bowing low and skipping away.
His eyes never leave her figure even as the woman introduces herself and grips his slack hand in a sham of a greeting.
She was talking about him.
No. There are none. Only him.
Internal fist pump! He has to swallow his cry of victory.
He shakes himself back to reality, finally giving the woman his full attention as she rattles off her issue to him.
------
Lunch is as crowded as usual but he only has eyes for her, sitting alone at their table.
He all but jogs over to her, scaring her as he slams his tray down on the table.
He's too excited to apologize, she has been the only thing on his mind all day and he has to hear this for himself.
"You think I'm handsome."
Her chopsticks pause in between her straightening of her gimbap, before she continues the habit.
"Yes. You have a strong jaw, symmetrical features and kind eyes, all the women who work here agree. You are by all standards a very good looking man."
"I don't care about standards. Or other women. Do you think I'm handsome?"
She gives him a look that can only be interpreted as- are you stupid?
"I already answered that. I said all the women who work here agree. I am a woman and I work here."
He can't fight the grin that splits across his face. It's even better hearing it face to face opposed to through eavesdropping.
"And I'm the only one you find handsome? There's no one else?"
"Yes."
Internal cartwheels, backflips, handstands. With just a few words she's made him a mess inside.
"Does that make you happy?" She inquires, cutely tilting her head.
"It does."
She shakes her head in disappointment, "Jun-ho ssi, you shouldn't find pleasure in other's suffering."
He barks out a bout of laughter, lifting his hands in supplication.
"I'm sorry. I'll do better." He grins at her and at her serious nod he laughs harder, stuffing his face with stir fried pork to hide his overzealous reaction.
She fills the returning silence with whale tales as he's taken to calling them. For the first time he interrupts her.
"I feel the same. To me, you are the only pretty one here. Woo Young-woo is pretty and smart."
She chews her food slowly, glancing at him.
"You shouldn't interrupt people when they're talking. You said lunch time was a good time to talk about whales."
He smiles at her light reprimand, because despite her cold words it's impossible to miss the bright red flush along the ridge of her nose and her cheeks. Her blush is the most gorgeous thing he's ever seen, in that moment he wished he possessed her perfect memory. He never wants to forget this sight.
"My apologies, it won't happen again. What were you saying?"

There's something about kdramas that end up undermining the social commentary that they were initially making. They tend to end up espousing copaganda or continued existance of chaebol families or some pro-family agenda. Bascially, kdramas tend to advocate for the status quo, and I think it's the neoliberalism.
Tumblr media
Lmao, what are yall on about? Kdramas always had copaganda, this isn't new??
Like I'm just so sick and tired of people acting like kdramas are perfect antidotes to American entertainment, when no, kdramas still exist within an industry like American shows are. And this industry is still influenced by politics cos South Korea, believe it or not, is a society, not some blank slate for outsiders to project their fantasies on. Kdramas are still kinda conservative, I've yet to see a kdrama that talks about abortion as a viable option, or a kdrama that has a single mother character not end up with a guy at the end, or hell? A kdrama that does not make Black and Brown characters the butt of jokes. And I haven't even talked about how this industry protects abusers and rapists (further enabled by fans).

D e s t i n e d w i t h y o u ; SPOILERS
I just finished watching Destined with you and AHHH <3
Plot: 7/10
The plot while one of the best things about it and is very entertaining it does get a bit repetitive they always come back to the overarching plot which is good but they only have 2 actual plot points (and yes I know its a limited series) and one of them the Stalking plot they don't really play on it at all and pretend that its normal?!? they act as if nothings wrong until the end and then ALL of a sudden they are responding normally too it because it could wrap up the series nicely.
The other plot point of the past lives I like it and a lot of dramas have done it amazingly and this drama does well at it but from the information you find out from episode 12-16 (ish) you earn no new information and they just keep going back to it from different perspectives not really adding anything new. Although I do love the plot of its destined to happen so why try to avoid it.
Also the ending left me wanting more although I know realistically that was the natural end to the show I still wanted to see Lee Hong jo and Jang Shin Yu have the wedding I feel like we don't get enough scenes of them happy together maybe that just the rom-com lover in me though.
Also the ex plot and her father (mayor of the company) just did not interest me at all the only good thing to come out of it was Lee Hong Jo's speech to her in the restaurant (in one of the final few episodes) and the scene where Jang Shin had figured out that the GF (now ex) slept with his old boss (correct me if I'm wrong), but other than that I was bored of it a few episodes in.
The magic / spells plot was honestly the best plot and funny asf especially when they only half believed in it towards the middle, and the whole scene with Kwon Jae Kyung when they were trying to prove to him it worked was good!
Characters / Acting: 7/10
The acting throughout the whole show for a most part is great there is a few moments especially in the first few episodes that the actors just don't funny understand there characters yet but apart from that the acting is good (yes there is a lot of 'cringy' bits BUT when is there not in a Drama, although I will say I did notice toward the middle and end i stopped pausing it from second hand embarrassment)
However the characters is what brough this catagory as the characters had the possiblity to be fleshed out and they have bac stories its just never gotten into, i mean Lee Hong's back ground is she was bullied and an orphan and while yes the part with her dad was cute and bonding for her and Jang Shin for the majority it is not explained like - WHAT I would have really liked to see that more and especially the behind the scenes with her mum and yes I get she died while Lee Hong was young i still would have at least liked for the show to show the affects of both of her parents dying.
I also think while yes there are quite a few characters I would have liked Lee Hong to actually have a good friendship instead of her and the women from her office as they were mostly in it to get closer to Jang Shin and Kwon Jae Like 0-0 at least let her make an actual friend!!
But all in all the characters have the potential to be fleshed out but they just didn't go into depth and I know that it is a limited series but still there is 16 episodes FIND SOME TIME.
Pace: 5/10
The pace of the whole show is quite slow BUT it does start to pick up around episode 7, and although it picks up at some point it becomes repetitive. And yes although I did watch it all in one (over the spa of like 3 days) and not weekly like intended but I still don't get why they give us the same plot point over and over again, ALSO the pace of the show is very much intended for a casual watch while still giving a good romance and thriller just thing they could have done it a bit better. And I'm glad they only stuck to a handful of plot points so they could go fully in depth in to a plot (meh) I wish they sped it up a tiny bit and gave us more of the day to day life.
Also the in universe time frame can get confusing at some point as they jump back and forth and sometimes a day had passed between scenes and sometimes months and most of the time they just don't tell you.
All in all I loved the show and I probably will try and watch the other shows that the actors are in just to see how they are in that.
This is all just for fun and what I liked and disliked! <3

The way I have zero motivation but if I could I would write 120k fic about those first days for Ryeon seeing the man she loved, the man she never thought she’d see again outside of haunting dreams and blistering, aching regret. But it’s not the same. She’d been told as much by the Director. He was a different man with his own mind and personality. Designed as her own personal hell. Still she’ll take it. She can’t help but want to be near him anyway and sometimes she’ll catch glimpses. An action or a word that will rip her through time and space, just for a second, a moment. The pain afterwords is almost worth it. Years pass and her aches become routine, his presence almost a comfort. He’d always be steadfast.
Case after case and she doesn’t realize that he sees her too. He doesn’t know her, not like that, but she’s competent. Does as she’s told and he appreciates that. She’s never wavered and it makes him want her closer. He respects her. Why wouldn’t he want someone as competent as she has proven herself to be by his side. He keeps her close and in that he sees more of her intentional or not. She fights hard and sometimes he’ll see a reflection of his style in her movements. Her gaze mirrors his when she’s bringing in the worst of humanity, almost as if she’s fighting the same demons he is. She’s in the standard black, but the color around her eyes makes her stand out. He stares longer than necessary sometimes.
All the way to the present when everything came crashing down. They managed to land on their feet, but it doesn’t erase the centuries of history. Ryeon is happy to resolve it knowing it will never fade completely. Where they are now is eons more than she thought she’d ever get, deserve. Things have changed completely and it will be a while before she figures out her own emotions. That and his smiles. Once so rare and treasured are now constantly on display for her. It chokes her up, makes her fumble in ways she hasn’t, doesn’t remember. Her cheeks match her eye shadow and it’s not becoming in a reaper centuries old. He’s not the same, no. How could he be? He has his memories back, but he’s lived hundreds of others since. Remade a cold man, rage a constant in his veins despite his complete control. Only now he has the past to anchor him, soften him just a bit now that he can let go of the misplaced anger. In its place something blooming. Reconciling the two parts is more confusing than she’d imagined. Especially now when he looks at her the exact way he once did.
