I’ve decided that the main characters of "My Next Life As A Villainess” can have D&D classes! So here we go. Big thanks to 5Etools for helping me out with this!
Katarina Claes: Kalashtar Redemption Paladin. Nobody said holy warriors had to be smart!
In all seriousness, Paladins of 5E are charisma-based “Half-casters,” which means they mix melee with magic. And it’s easy enough to reflavor a lot of D&D spells as “Oh, yeah, this character just happens to know X random thing or can talk so convincingly!” (Or the character doesn’t realize they’re doing magic, which would be so Katarina.) Plus the Redemption oath just fits so well for the girl, both thematically and mechanically. Throw on Strength-based combat skills because of years of farming and sword-training... it’s pretty obvious.
As to the race choice, the Kalashtar are a third-party Eberron race that are described as being “a fusion of humans and beings from the realm of dreams.” Which hey, what else would you call somebody who remembered their past life? And from a mechanical perspective, it would give Katarina resistance to psychic damage (she’s that dense) and automatic advantage on persuasion rolls (she can say just the right thing).
Maria Campbell: Variant Human Life Cleric. A “Well Duh!” if I ever saw one.
Clerics, the traditional healers and support characters in all of roleplaying, are wisdom-based casters in 5E. I was originally considering making Maria a Light cleric but, mechanically, Life clerics are closer to Light magic as portrayed in the series so, yeah, Life.
Variant Humans are the “Pick an ability increase and get a free feat at the start of the game” race, and Maria is sorta kinda the protagonist of the old game? Her player would probably just set herself up to fill in the gaps of the other characters anyway. So yeah.
Mary Hunt: Kaladesh Elf Samurai Fighter. Look, she can be scary, alright?
Fighters can be strength-based OR dexterity-based, and Mary would have a lot of dexterity skill from all the gardening and stuff. A lot of the Fighter perks are basically “No I’m NOT giving up!” which, yeah, fits her well. Being a Samurai not only enhances that, but it gives her perks for certain wisdom traits--Mary is not an idiot by any stretch of the imagination.
Kaladesh elves synch pretty well with this build, giving both Dexterity and Wisdom boosts, but primarily I picked this particular race for the free Druid cantrip in order to represent Mary’s water magic. Still, she would be one to choose to meditate instead of falling asleep, just to keep an eye on... things.
Sophia Ascart: Detection Mark Half-Elf Divination Wizard. She likes them books.
The class side of this was easy. Intelligence-based caster? Wizard. Love of books? Wizard. Not a physical fighter? Wizard. Had a talk with her past self? Divination wizard. What can I say, Sophia is pretty good at being a wizkid.
Race, though... oh, wow. So many options. I went with a Detection Mark Half-Elf because Sophia really, really notices things and that seems to be what that particular race was built for. Plus it’s an Eberron thing, like Katarina’s race, so that’s a past life connection! Yay!
Nicol Ascart: Storm Mark Half-Elf Swashbuckler Rogue. That smile works wonders.
Com on, how couldn’t I make Nicol ‘incapacitates a crowd with a smile’ Ascart a swashbuckler? Plus Rogues are usually known for being the skill class of 5E, doing things handling things that come up in adventures beyond punching monsters. Nicol does seem the most... level-headed of the group, so he would probably be the one to handle the little details.
As for race, I’ll admit I went with the ‘Sophia’s a half-elf so Nicol’s also a half-elf!’ route. But Storm Mark Half-Elves do come with a lot of wind-based magic, which not only fits canon but also enhances what Nicol could do as a rogue. Admittedly he would have to multiclass slightly to get at most of it, but hey, Gust is a cantrip and the other spells are there for him if he ever does.
Keith Claes: Fierna Tiefling Monster Slayer Ranger. Friendly, but dangerous.
Rangers are another half-caster class, and one with many ‘summon allies’ sort of spells. Sure, they’re technically animals instead of earth elementals, but I do subscribe to the ‘reflavor is fine!’ school of thought so Keith can have his dolls come out when he casts Conjure Animals. The Monster Slayer subclass is built around countering and containing dangerous beings... like, say, Keith himself? Oh, wow, I just picked it because it looked cool. Huh.
And why is Keith a Tiefling? In another life, he was a playboy, so of COURSE he’s going to get a charisma-boost race! A resistance to fire damage makes him perfect for, ah, interrupting a certain prince’s advances. And Fierna Tieflings get spells based around convincing people of things, like Friends and Charm Person, and there’s a certain dense girl in Keith’s life that needs a little guidance.
Geordo Stuart: Gold Standard Dragonborn Draconic Sorcerer. BURN BABY BURN!
Sorcerers are one of the charisma-based casters, with the idea that they have magic IN THEIR BLOOOOOD so they can, you know, cast without needing to do all that silly Study business. Plus they get some of their subclass stuff right off the bat, and Draconic Sorcerers get extra hitpoints every level. Geordo may not use his magic often, but it’s implied that as a royal his magic is redonkulously powerful, so this? This was basically set in stone.
And why did I make the prince a dragonborn? Why, because DRAGONS ARE AWESOME. Look, I don’t make the rules. More seriously, basic dragonborn have a charisma boost, strength boost, and a breath weapon. Admittedly this would probably make Geordo look a LOT different, but what the hey.
Alan Stuart: Silver Draconblood Dragonborn Lore Bard. He knows things so you don’t have to.
Bards are the other charisma-based casters, and a lot more support-based then sorcerers. Plus they’re good musicians, which fits Alan to a T! Lore Bards lean heavily into the ‘Jack Of All Trades’ mindset, with bonus proficiencies and extra magic secrets, because there was that competitive ‘I will best you some way!’ streak early on and that did lean into ‘I’ll learn all I can’ later in his life.
As to why he’s a draconblood dragonborn instead of a standard dragonborn? Draconbloods get an intelligence boost instead of a strength boost, and also get the trait Forceful Presence instead of Damage Resistance. He might not be able to do as much damage as his twin, but Alan is really good at getting attention and using it.
Anne Shelly: Standard Human Open Hand Monk. Somebody has to clean up after these kids!
Monks excel not just in unarmed combat, but in unarmed ‘getting places nobody thinks about’ as well as ‘keeping a cool head when everything goes nuts.’ And the Open Hand Monk doubles down on that, throwing in the ability to basically say “Stop That” whenever needed. This is perfect for Anne “My Mistress Is The Source Of All Chaos” Shelly, wouldn’t you say?
And yeah, she’s a Standard Human. In 5E Standard humans don’t get any special traits, but they do get +1 to every one of their abilities. That’s a small but significant boost to all rolls and a number of stats. Don’t underestimate Anne; she may be in the background, but she’s in the background of Madness and it takes a lot to survive that.
Rafael Walt: Fallen Aasimar Great Old One Warlock. Retired Edgelord.
Warlocks are, ah, not the easiest class to play. They’ve got a lot of special mechanics about their spells, having fewer slots but easier time restoring them. But they do also get a few free invocations, and their patrons can let them spread into different specializations. Rafael knows how to use his magic to the best he can, and... well, the Great Old One patron features just fit what he can do very well.
Aasimar have charisma boosts and darkness resistance universally, but Fallen Aasimar also come with a transformation into a terrifying shadow warrior. Look, Rafael's been through a lot, I’ll grant you. He probably deserves a break. But both thematically and mechanically, this just fits.
===
So that’s that! For now, anyway! Thoughts and opinions are always welcome.

Fic Post: [Voltron: Legendary Defender] Swamp of Sorrows
Tumblr media
Summary: You can learn a lot about a person by helping them bathe, OR When Pike gets exposed to corrosive ooze, Block (& Keith) make a few sad discoveries about their party's rogue. A "Monsters & Mana" story.
Read it: here
Author’s Note: So, my dreams have conspired to provide more “Monsters & Mana” content, which is sorely needed. Here, Block and the others are actual questing heroes rather than tabletop characters, and since I used their in-game names, I’ve included those below. My half-conscious brain also added Keith, because why not?
Hunk – Block, human cleric Pidge – Meklavar, dwarvish fighter Shiro – Takashi Shirogane, human paladin Allura – Valayun, elvish ranger Lance – Pike, catfolk rogue Keith – Keife, demi-tiefling sorcerer
Excerpt:
The grateful citizens celebrated the verdict with a village-wide fête, and the heroes stayed to enjoy the revels. Pike was at his finest, flashing his canines at the prettiest barmaids and winking at anyone who so much as tipped him a smile. Block had to admire the way he weaved through the crowds without entanglement. Perhaps it was the feline in him, but Pike preferred a look-don't-touch approach when it came to admiration.
Block had a fascination with his friend’s feline aspect, actually. Catfolk were illusive, their habits and inclinations not well known. Block remembered the first time he’d seen Pike lounging against a wall, casually conversing with an orange tabby in a language that could only be described as a series of chirps, trills, and hisses. When he asked about it later, Pike laughed.
"The nuances are actually more in the front and back end," he said, giving a demonstrative twitch of the ears and coiling his brown tail. “Body language, you know?”

What if back home, Matt and Pidge were huge DnD nerds? and they often roped Shiro into playing too. And they've both missed playing so one time during a mission that involves a lot of waiting time, they decide to rope the others in into a new campaign? I feel like Matt could have spent a lot of sleepless nights worldbuilding, adding in new elements for every day of new alien discoveries he makes. Pidge programs the computer to roll the dice (until such time as they can drop by the Olkari
to make a huge variety of dice with their tech. and when the Olkari are curious what these dice are to be used for, Pidge and Matt are all too happy to nerd out some more explaining the game to more people. Also! I’m p sure Matt would have introduced his rebel friends to the game as well. It spreads like wildfire. WHat I’m saying is please imagine the Voltron alliance and the Blade of Marmora playing DnD.
Despite all that I post about TAZ and other DnD stuff I have never had an opportunity to play the game myself (*cries*) so I don’t honestly know enough to properly write out a scene or headcanons for this but I LOVE IT so goddammit I’m gonna try anyway (and I ended up googling a lot of shit about classes and species and stuff. Forgive me if any of it makes no goddamn sense).
They don’t have a book or anything in space but I have a feeling Matt and Pidge wreaked hell with the rules and wholesale invented their own campaigns even when they did so honestly it doesn’t much matter. They cobble together spell cards and stuff from memory and then invent a whole bunch of new shit based on alien races they encounter
Shiro DM’ed exactly once back on Earth when Matt and Pidge were both players and since then he absolutely refuses to do it again. They’re too powerful at derailing all his careful planning in .2 seconds flat
Matt switches up his character’s species, gender, etc a lot when he starts new campaigns, but he is always, without fail, a bard
The first new campaign they do is just with the other Paladins
Pidge DMs
She and Matt collaborate on worldbuilding based on all the different alien planets they’ve visited
Matt is a tiefling bard
Shiro was a fighter a lot, previously, but that leaves a bit of a bad taste in his mouth now re: memories of the gladiator fights, so he decides to be a sorcerer instead
Hunk has played, like, once before, so he has some idea of how the game works, but he’s still one of the most anxious players. He’ll make Pidge describe the scene like 300 times before he decides what he wants to do.
However, he solves almost every single puzzle in like 10 seconds. It’s a good thing Pidge is DMing because she’s probably the only one who can come up with puzzles difficult enough to stump him
He plays as a human Paladin
Lance decided to play as a druid but half the time he behaves like a bard, trying to seduce every single damn creature they come into contact with
Keith is pretty much confused af but he’s happy to be included
“What should I play as?” Literally everyone, in unison: “Ranger”
He rolls perception checks like a madman and is super paranoid about Pidge launching sneak attacks on the party
That paranoia is entirely justified
When Allura and Coran ask to join is when Pidge and Matt come up with the idea to expand the rules to include alien species they’ve encountered and even invent a few new classes
Coran is a wild card
He has a ridiculous ability to roll a nat 20 on freaking everything
*DM is halfway through describing a scene* “I LEAP OFF THE CLIFF AND A GIANT FLURFLOCK CATCHES ME” “N… no, that’s not… you can’t just—” “I ROLLED A TWENTY” *exasperated sigh*
Allura, on the other hand, is a much more cautious player
BUT she does that thing where she’ll go quiet for a loooooong time while everyone else takes their turn, and then, when it gets to her, she’ll cast some absurdly OP spell that breaks the entire goddamn game and wins the fight in one move
BLADE OF MARMORA. PLAYING DND. YES. I’M SO INTO THIS OKAY
Pidge, Matt, and Keith somehow end up on a mission with the Blade. I don’t care how it happens but they either get stuck or have to wait somewhere for a long time.
Pidge and Matt look at each other and are just like *rubbing hands together* We have the PERFECT way to pass the time. Keith: “Oh no”
Actually, it turns out to be really nice for Keith to have other people who also seem hesitant and confused by this game and how it works, and the BoM are reassured by Keith not quite knowing what the fuck is going on either
Matt decides to DM this game for them
The BoM start out super cautious, like this is a real battle, but Pidge leads by example and Matt is maybe a little too lenient letting them get away with shit because it’s their first game
By the end of the mission, they’re going a little insane with the possibilities and Matt has to deal with all kinds of game-breaking moves
“You come to a river. It’s moving too fast to swim across safely and there are no bridges” Regris: “I DRINK IT.” “You… drink the river?” “YES.”
Matt also ABSOLUTELY taught all the rebels and slowly this spreads out across the universe
Some rebels at a couple different really remote outposts hook up an online game
The Galra hack some of their transmissions and think it’s a super encoded battle plan and are so confused and frightened
And finally, because you know I’m absolute Klance trash and I know you are too:
Keith and Lance’s characters spend a lot of dialogue not-so-subtly flirting
Pidge encourages this more than she should
"You’re separated from the party. With the storm blowing in, there’s no way anyone will find you until at least the morning.” Keith: “We... uhmmmmmm... huddle for warmth.” Pidge: “CUDDLE FOR WARMTH YES ROLL FOR CUDDLING.” Keith: “Goddammit Pidge I said huddle.” Lance: “I got a 16 for cuddling.”
Hunk, to the side: “If we get them to bang in the game do you think we can get them to finally bang in real life?” Pidge: “I don’t know but I’m willing to try.”

Yo this be ren n i Live for voltron dungeons and dragons because im a major nerd who is involved in 4 seprete campaigns rn (why did i do this 2 myself) and u said we could hit u up to ask about their charecters and charecter sheets n shit im curious please give me the dnd memes (also fuck monks why is there always an op monk on every single team i s2g) ooooh and if u dont wanna rply to this on ur blog im just on mobile n 2 lazy to sign in so im persona-5-is-finally-here and im never online <3
I’m crying someone actually wants to know my reasoning and headcanons this is the beST THING I COULD HAVE ASKED FOR
I hope that I answer everything well :D
(also one time I was the op monk and it was like a permanent high I loved it)
Lanceokay so I made Lance an elf bard because Lance always hits on the ethereal aliens (i.e nyma) and so it made since to me that he would love elves.  as for the bard idk I saw a comic one time that was Lance being a memelord by playing wonderwall for allura on a guitar and that kinda made me accept that Lance is a really good singer and dabbles in musical instruments
Keithokay so keith’s class and race are actually two of my fave things I came up with!  so keith is a tiefling.  background on those is that they’re of demon blood.  they’re half the “bad guys” so I chose this because keith is half galra.  he’s got purple skin and yellow eyes because those are common for galra and sometimes i like to think i’m clever :b  as for the rogue, it’s a good class for tiefling and rogues tend to be secretive and non-confrontational, and I figured that fit keith in the sense that he doesn’t like/want to be the leader and stuff
Mattmatt’s a cleric because (tbh) he healed my heart in season 4 I loooove him.  but it’s also because matt seems like he’s a good support character who wants the best for everyone around him.  I made him a dwarf because I love dwarves and matt seems like the kind of dude who would grow a ridiculous drawf beard for funsies and this is a way for him to live out his dream
Alluraso I actually heavily debated making allura a full-blooded elf, but I eventually decided on half-elf because she’s living in between two worlds and doesn’t really feel like she belongs in either.  her home of altea is destroyed and she’s 10,000 years in the future so she like knows how to live and such, but she still doesn’t technically belong.  half-elves are the same because they’re often shunned by each culture.  she’s half high elf because they’re the “nobles” of the elf world.  she’s a sorcerer because their magic is innate and is inherited through bloodlines, like how allura’s magic is in her, she doesn’t get it from anything outside of herself
Hunkhunk is a human fighter because it’s the most unassuming class/race and, to me, hunk is the most unassuming of the paladins.  he pilots the yellow lion which is basically a tank, and fighters are usually the tanks of the party.  I just really felt like this was the best way to represent hunk.  there’s not the brutality that comes with being a barbarian, but there’s still a quiet strength present and that’s what hunk is to me
Shirofinally we got that one punch man.  so shiro is a human monk for the obvious reasons.  once again, human seems like an unassuming race and that’s the kind of person that shiro is.  monks, more often than not, don’t use any weapons.  so, this is obviously a tribute to when shiro didn’t have a bayard and, instead, was just fighting with his fists
