Stays Krunchy in Milk Episode 482: Sprinkle a Little Lecter On It
R.I.P. David Jolicoeur, Trugoy The Dove, Plug 2, or just Dave, you will be missed. We recorded this episode in person at Dan’s house. Anthony continues our Black History studies we discuss the foods brought over by enslaved people and the truly awful nature of chattel slavery. It’s a rare Tee heavy episode and he shares quite a few tales but those tales of course lead to other discussions so worry not, it’s still a great time. We head over to Reddit for some AITA before going hard on our entertainment discussion this week with a deep dive into Kenya Barris’s Netflix film You People and what we liked and disliked about it. We also discussed The Last of Us on HBO, The Last of Us on Playstation, Metroid Prime Remaster on Nintendo Switch, Poker Face on Peacock, so forth and so on. As always, if I don’t say I’m the best tell me who the hell will, and this episode is fantastic.
Catch you next time,
Team SKiM

rafaelcasal | Got to listen and gives notes on scripts at the @ghettofilmschool a few weeks ago, alongside some creatives I deeply respect - @carmencubacasts @beherelater @kenyabarris. All in prep for these young filmmakers to head to Latin America to make their short films. I often miss teaching, miss working in academic/workshop spaces where we talk about the WHY of story, the mechanics of great writing, the love of the edit, and de-mystifying of process. Where I grew up, we didn’t feel invited to the main stages of storytelling, and that went double or triple if you were a person of color, immigrant, etc. So to see young folks trying to tell big stories in their own voices is magical, especially when they are big ideas, genre pieces, rooted in their perspective on the world. The biggest thing missing from the entertainment business is artistic mentorship - a passing of knowledge, a sharing of collective intellectual and emotional resource. Writing is not some automat-able straight line, it is the expression of the human condition, in discovery. It is both your wisdom and your blindspots exposed, and an expression of not only you, but the community of artists that helped you (and trust, it takes a village to make one person look like a genius.) That is why spaces like this are so valuable to the culture. Thanks for having me, and letting me put on my development hat for a day on your beautiful scripts.

Let’s not forget that Kenya-ISH Barris was the co-creator of America’s Next Top Model. No wonder it was problematic.

Coming 2 America (2021)
Tumblr media
Only watch Coming 2 America if it’s been decades since you saw the original. Enough time will surely make this follow-up feel nostalgic instead of derivative and uninspired.
On the 30th anniversary of his wedding, Prince Akeem of Zamunda (Eddie Murphy) readies himself to ascend to the throne. Complicating his new role is Zamunda’s hostile neighbor, led by General Izzi (Wesley Snipes). To prevent a war between the countries, Akeem needs a male heir for Izzi’s daughter (Teyana Taylor). Luckily for him, he impregnated Mary Junson (Leslie Jones) before meeting Lisa (Shari Headley). Akeem must go back to America and convince Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler) to start a new life.
Chop this movie up, re-arrange it, and you’ve got Coming to America but with a few details wrong. In Zamunda, Lavelle’s put in an arranged marriage to a beautiful woman who has no personality or goals except to obey him. If that doesn’t sound familiar, the movie tells you it’s repeating itself by showing you Vanessa Bell Calloway’s character, still hopping on one foot and barking like a dog. Like before, you know Lavelle will reject his royal duties in favor of the "plain, normal" woman he’s fallen for (Mirembe, played by Nomzamo Mbatha). It wouldn’t be such a big deal if this film wasn’t aggressively obsessed with its history. Louie Anderson is back as Maurice, still working at McDowell’s. When Akeem and Semmi (Arsenio Hall) make a trip back to Queens, they visit the same barbershop with the same people inside it, again. The makeup used to transform Murphy and Hall into Mr. Clarence, Saul, and Morris is great but we’ve seen that joke before. It isn’t all that funny anymore, neither are Randy Watson, and Reverend Brown.
Something feels like it's missing in every scene. The entire film depends upon Akeem’s daughters (played by Kiki Layne, Bell Murphy, and Akiley Love) being ineligible to ascend to the throne. We’re told women aren’t even allowed to own businesses in Zamunda. You’d think Akeem’s American-born wife, Lisa (Shari Headley, barely in the film) would’ve ensured some changes to the kingdom when her father-in-law was still alive (he's still played by James Earl Jones). Instead, she’s apparently spent the last 30+ years doing nothing. These, and a joke about how American movies are all superhero- or franchise-based highlight the sloppy writing. We know Black Panther (the movie) exists in this world, so why draw attention to your comparatively barbaric province? Pointing out your flaws doesn't make them disappear.
The film isn’t devoid of laughs. Wesley Snipes as the over-the-top General Izzi is terrific. Other highlights include Akeem’s three daughters and the colorful, inventive, and beautiful costumes. The threads Teyana Taylor is given will make your jaw drop.
If you watch Coming 2 America, you might as well stay through the end credits for a bonus scene at the end. Overall, the movie is good-natured but it’s like a dart thrown just a few millimeters off to the left. When you miss your mark, the effort only counts for so much. (May 10, 2021)

Arsenio shocks the world with a first. .
Arsenio Hall is Back!
Comedy Dynamics announced today it will release Arsenio Hall’s first stand-up comedy special, which was filmed live at the San Jose Improv April 6, 2019. The special was directed by Brian Volk-Weiss and produced by Cisco Henson for Comedy Dynamics. It’s slated to be released in fall 2019. In case you're too young to know this man's brilliance or remember his work, Arsenio hosted The Arsenio Hall Show, which ran from 1989 to 1994. After he won Celebrity Apprentice in 2012, the syndicated talk show was revived for one season that aired from 2013 – 2014. He was recently a regular on the Tom Joyner Morning Show, and for all intents and purposes, he's one of the greatest entertainers of our time. The Arsenio Hall show SHUT DOWN every Black household in America, many whites too. It was must watch tv. True Stand-up Comedy First of all, it's hard to believe this brother has never filmed a special. For the past two decades Arsenio has taken a break from the stage, until now. Like most who love the craft Hall once again felt a hunger for writing jokes and finding the best way to present them to audiences. According to Arsenio, he missed the thrill of visiting a new a city every week. He longed for the challenge of sizing up a room and devising a set of comedy based on what he felt. While 'winging' a set doesn't work very long for most people, its been a recipe for success for Hall. Based on social media post and first-hand accounts of his performances, Arsenio Hall the stand-up comic is back, with avengance. Audiences from New York to L.A. have raved about his knack for making everyday life, funny. No gimmicks, no cliches, just comedy. Coming To America And because no story about Arsenio Hall is complete without referencing his arguably best role and world's funniest movie, we had to get official word on 'Coming to America II.' "YES" Arsenio emphatically answered. "It is happening. Kenya Barris just finished a second draft of 'Coming to America II.' I'm really happy with it, dog, because it's so hard to follow a movie like that. That's why we didn't do it for so long. Why we decided to leave it where it is. I love it, and Eddie (Murphy) loves it. It's funny, we don't need the makeup to play the old guys in the barbershop now. We waited too long. We can do just the barbershop, except those guys would be dead. But it's working out, and we should have a draft finished when it starts to get warm outside. Hoping to shoot that baby this year." That's great news, we think. There's always reason to pause when such an iconic piece of pop-culture is re-made or sequalized (Ebonics at its finest), but Eddie is a legend, Arsenio is a legend, and Kenya Barris did a phenomenal job with 'Girls Trip' and 'Black-ish', so let's give them a chance. The flick should be funny, if not, there's always the eye candy that has become Allison Dean (Patrice McDowel). That sister has grown from fine to super-fine! But back on task, Arsenio has a special coming soon and it deserves a look. He's a comedy OG and one of the realest brothers on planet earth.   Read the full article
