(or, a list for those who would like to see more of the weird sisters)

🩸 A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson - told from the perspective of Dracula’s first bride, Constanta, this is an alternate-universe story of the Brides through the ages, their relationship with Dracula becoming increasingly more abusive, and the three of them finally breaking free of this relationship. A slightly more detailed review here.

🩸 The Deathless Girls by Kiran Millwood Hargrave - a young adult prequel novel about the two dark-haired Brides, here reimagined as two Romani sisters. A slightly more detailed review here. 

🩸 Dracula, Motherf**ker! by Alex de Campi and Erica Henderson - a very short graphic novel about the Brides and a crime scene photographer called Quincey Harker fighting Dracula in the 1974 Los Angeles. A more detailed review here. 

🩸 Van Helsing (2004) - that one action movie where Van Helsing is an immortal monster hunter played by Hugh Jackman, and also Frankenstein’s monster is there. Love this movie or hate it, it can’t be denied that the Brides play quite a big role in it. 

🩸 Bit (2019) - not a Dracula adaptation, but still a vampire movie that draws on the concept of the Brides of Dracula. The main character, Laurel (a trans woman played by a trans actress), moves to LA to her brother after graduating high school, is bitten by a pretty girl she meets at the club, and joins a vampire girl gang. The power dynamics in the group eventually lead to a confrontation complicated by the return of a powerful ancient vampire called ~Vlad~ (there’s a flashback sequence about him set to Rasputin by Boney M. If you even care). 

🩸 The Invitation (2022) - if you don’t mind some randos (because the Harkers would never!) being given the names of the characters of Dracula, here’s a Gothic romance/horror movie about a young American woman Evie, who finds out she has relatives in England, accepts their invitation to a wedding, goes to England where a rich lord starts courting her, and then all hell breaks loose. This one goes the easy way of making Dracula young-looking and handsome, but I’d say he’s still scary enough, and if vampirism was taken away, this could still be a horror movie about fucked up rich people à la Ready or Not.

🩸 The Brides (2020) - before the pandemic, ABC was developing a TV series about the Brides in the modern world, starring Gina Torres as one of the three. Then COVID-19 happened, and the show got scrapped. Only the trailer remains. By the look of it, it would have been cheesy, but I still found it interesting to get a glimpse at what could have been.

Kerry and V both had anniversaries they hated. For Kerry it was the day Johnny nuked the tower, but for V it was the day Jackie died. For a man he didn’t have the time to mourn properly, thinking he’d be joining him soon. But now, three years later, here V was, alive and finally being able to process things.

“V? Baby?” Kerry knew he was welcome to join in on V’s shower, but also had noticed V was quiet. Sad almost, and didn’t want to impose on his thinking in the hour long shower time. But also knew it made Kerry nervous.

“Come in!” He called, he’d rather have Kerry in here with him than be alone. Jackie wouldn’t want him to be alone, not on a day like today. He was sitting on the shower floor, letting the warm water fall over him. He must have looked pitiful because of the look Kerry pulled when he peaked his head into the shower.

“Hey sweetheart..” he said softly, watching V just sit under the shower. It was warmer than the rain that had fallen that night, the anxiety and fear had made his blood run cold. He was safe now, but he couldn’t enjoy it with Jackie being gone. Not truly.

“Oh baby-“ The shower stopped and V didn’t realize he had started crying until Kerry pulled him closer, V clutching his hoodie as a towel wrapped around him. Kerry was going to get soaked holding V like this, kneeling down in the shower with him.

“You’re.. You’re gonna get soaked-“ V tried to stop his tears, but the reality of Jackie’s death felt crushing. He just felt a warm kiss on his forehead and the towel wrap around him.

“I don’t care, let’s get you warmed up and comfortable.” Kerry said softly, helping V up and off the cold tiles. He felt weak, pathetic. It was three years ago and he was happy and living comfortably now. But it felt.. wrong. Not having Jackie at his side. He wanted him to meet Kerry and Judy, and River and Panam. To be at their wedding, meet any possible kids the two may have.

He didn’t even realize Kerry had gotten him back into the bedroom until he was sitting on the bed, and Kerry was picking out clothes for him. “I miss him, Ker.. you would have loved him.” He whispered, his voice breaking.

“I know I would have, he meant the world to you. I would have loved to meet him.” Kerry helped him get dressed, wearing one of Jackie’s shirts.

“He used to tease me whenever you came on the radio.” V chuckled softly, Kerry climbing into bed and V immediately laying on top of him, resting his head on his chest. “Called you my boyfriend before we even met.” He could feel Kerry’s laugh.

V went quiet after, Kerry brushing’s V’s hair out with his fingers, his other hand absentmindedly rubbing his back and arm. He was safe, he was warm. He was right where Jackie would have wanted him to be, and even after everything, it felt undeserved. Jackie should be here, with Misty and Mama Welles, at the top. He was always a better and brighter person than V would have ever been.

“I miss him so much..” he whispered, feeling Kerry hold him closer.

“I know baby.. I know..” in a way, Kerry understood. V and Jackie had been nowhere near how Kerry and Johnny had been, but Kerry wouldn’t let V go down the spiral he had gone down when Johnny died. He’d be the support system he never had. He loved V too much to let him destroy himself over something that wasn’t his fault.

disclaimer ig yes thanatos has done awful awful things but that’s not what I’m talking about right now so bear with me - ANYWAY -

my point begins with, it’s funny because in current canon and for QUITE some time prior I’m always talking about Thanatos in the past tense like oh he Did That and he Traumatized This Person and Because of Him This Is Like This — like now he’s just the ~villain ghost of the narrative~

but for a while he WAS a character who would actually appear in the Elysiumverse, not even just to show up and cause a bloody scene (he did that too 😔) but prior to Neo’s kidnapping that got him arrested sometimes he would just Be There™ loosely in the Underworld to be a bitch to Maci and Tory (the contents of those convos are heavily from the before-april-thought-to-archive-things-time and are mostly lost to the sands of time) -

and the POINT of this rambling is that like, delightfully I think the personality and character of Thanatos is something that I don’t get to talk about much lately or right now!?? we know he was among the most despicable assholes in the elysium’verse and we know his list of egregious crimes and we know that By The Time We (as in, you all, as in the events that I mostly ever talk about here) Got To Meet Him he was already on a spiral down into the full unmasked supervillainry that led to his downfall— but like. what was he like to interact with beforehand.

…..as an aside please know that even with Maci’s history with him and even though she remained terrified of him at her core, Maci had buried all that down (to not deal with for. Years) and so whenever she and thanatos ran into each other in those aforementioned beforetimes - which wAS MORE TIMES THAN YOU’D THINK - their interactions were less “cowering from a scythe” that you might be imagining and more “loudly bickering at each other bc Maci couldn’t let him know he was getting to her” so that’s. Yes yes before Thanatos reactivated™ he was more of a nuisance fggkfk

BUT ANYWAY

and so, in regards to Thanatos and Ker……. What WAS he like to interact with beforehand well. Ker can tell you! oh she fuckin couldn’t stand him LOLL. sure they considered each other allies - despite being distant siblings they did I think hook up quite… frequently which. okay yeah gross but Greek mythy disclaimer, and this is hardly the worst thing they’ve ever done at least not tHANATOS - insufferable as she found him he was attractive at least I mean 😐 anyway - but Ker like. did not LIKE him?!!!

Ker IS an Elysium villain but honestly…. really JUST due to her relationship with Chal, don’t forget Ker has never actually DONE anything against maci and Tory other than allow Chal to be born as a weapon against them (Thanatos’s idea) and stand there menacingly when Neo was kidnapped (and rip Chal’s shoulder off at the time). She’s disliked Maci because fucking everyone dislikes Maci and disliked Tory because Maci really plucked this destined-to-die-mortal up and ascended him out of deaths grip how dare He Do That but like. Ker’s priority has always been her job and duty as Death

And so her relationship with Thanatos is 1) obligation based - based on the fact that he’s the only other death and if anything happened to him she’d have more work to do. dddddid she kinda sorta definitely encourage his murdery tendencies when he was a fucked up child!! okay yes she did do that but. he took that and ran with it. Like I said Thanatos and Ker ARE siblings many centuries apart and the concept of a second death exists because Ker (and Morpheus, that’s another story) had gone to the fates long before Thanatos was born to get some Fucking Help. and then this is what she ended up with?!!! because number TWO-

her relationship w him was ANNOYANCE BASED!??? because thanatos did not ever give a shit about his own duty and instead was constantly distracted murdering people he wasn’t supposed to (Ker did cover for him, so I guess that’s a crime to add to her own list) . He was constantly getting tangled in needless drama that HE started all the time with the palace or with whoever he was tormenting at the time. To be fair…….. Ker did absolutely enable all this to happen so again she’s not like,a good person but her allyship with thanatos was soooo reluctant lol

Like, Thanatos annoyed the shit out of her! At his “height” he was popular and charismatic and chatty (in the underworld - on olympus he was bitchier, as warranted<33 tho he did schmooze with Ares too who was like. I see right thru u dude you’re fucked up gtfo). he was constantly wrapped up with his stupid little schemes and power plays while Ker and her all business zero sense of humor personality was like. fucking god can you focus. literally like? Evil deathy version of Dog Person/Cat Person.

when thanatos came to her as his own insanity was ramping up and was like Can You Do Me A Favor Pleaase Please Pleeeeeeaaaaseeeee I Need You To Have An Evil Baby With Me her response was basically are you fucking kidding me. he got her to agree with the promise that a double death born god would be evil and cool. (It was Chal, and she was not either of those things fgkkfg). but it was also to get him to just stop whining at her about it.

Meanwhile, Thanatos - knew Ker hated him, first of all - but also knew that she was/is WAY stronger than him, as she could (and did. Sometimes. When he was particularly irritating) break bones or make anyone spit up ichor with just a blink of her eye as goddess of violent death - and so Thanatos calculated that he could not afford to have her an as enemy. but… Thanatos also HATED that she was stronger than him, raging cocky misogynist beneath the surface that he was. and so to her face he tolerated her back and even batted his eyelashes and acted as companion and ally— but seethed under his breath about having to feign friendship and respect to Some Dumb Bitch

…and every time Ker HEARD HIM SAY THAT UNDER HIS BREATH she’d snarl at him until he backed down fgkgkg

and so once Neo was born and Ker realized that SHE DIDNT NEED THANATOS ANYMORE she really checked the fuck out of the situation and just. Politely waited for him to fucking die. it did take a few years but sure enough he was euthanized and in exchange Ker got Neo, who despite being the daughter of the prince and princess that she really disliked was… comparatively not that bad.<333 and they all lived happily ever after

so in conclusion!!! yes Ker didn’t gaf that thanatos was gone lmao. not in the slightest. Thanatos and Melinoe were committing murders for each other’s honor during the height of their villainy but when Thanatos was exploded into literal chunks, KER was like….. :-) hmm ok. that’s fine.

this went all over the place but I hope this has been a fun look at a separately bizarre dynamic taking place on the outskirts of Elysium this whole entire time <3 the end

dracula, motherf**ker!: city of angels, city of vampires

Haven’t read any new Dracula-inspired books lately, but I do have a comic book for you.

Dracula, Motherf**ker! by Alex de Campi and Erica Henderson is a graphic novel in which the Brides of Dracula get fed up with the Count using and abusing them and nail him to the bottom of his coffin in Vienna in 1889. But then he resurfaces in 1974 in Los Angeles, and the Brides have to try to stop him again, with the help of a crime scene photographer who accidentally finds out that a vampire is behind the recent murders. It is definitely, totally, certainly not available on ReadComicOnline.

Okay, I know that "graphic novel” is just what the genre is called, but this is not a novel. It is a short story at best. It’s 65 pages including the cover, the character design sheets and the like, it can be read in 15 minutes. It tells a complete story, but in a very quick and fragmentary way, without much detail, and that is a pity, because the idea is interesting. Personally I am always a sucker - pun not intended - for the Brides bringing Dracula down, and I really liked that this comic doesn’t make them good people - I understand the wish to reimagine them as the kind of vampires who only attack abusers or rapists or otherwise terrible people, and I have enjoyed retellings that paint them in this manner, but this is not what they are in Bram Stoker’s novel. A character can be a villain and a victim at the same time, and I think in case of the Brides this should be explored more. And all this in a neo-noir setting! I feel like it deserved to be a longer and more complex story. Or a movie! Unfortunately, what we have feels like it barely touches the surface of what could have been.

The art, on the other hand, is very cool, with influences ranging from giallo horror to (in some places) even Gustav Klimt. 

I also enjoyed the take on Count Dracula here. It is really creepy and original: he doesn’t look remotely like a man, he’s an eldritch whirlwind of eyes and claws. In her afterword to the graphic novel, On monsters, which I honestly found the most interesting part of this book, Alex de Campi writes that making Dracula a handsome romantic hero is too easy - then the Brides becoming his Brides in the first place could be explained with love. But if he’s a shapeless horror, then it makes the Brides the kind of women that see that a monster is clearly a monster and still agree to be with him in order to get the wealth and power he is offering. And then, when a monster turns out even more monstrous than they were expecting, have to become monstrous themselves to free themselves of him.

There’s also some fun intertextuality going on. The names of the Brides are taken from Van Helsing (2004), unless I am mistaken and they had these names in some earlier adaptation. Also, while it is clearly AU in relation to Dracula the novel, I need to warn the Dracula Daily readers that there is a pretty big spoiler for the end of the book. However, you might not realize it is a spoiler until you get to the afterword mentioned above, and just see it as a reference to the book. I can’t really get into more details, because then I will certainly spoil the book for you myself. 

All in all, I found this a bunch of cool concepts in a very pretty trenchcoat, which deserved better execution. Still not regretting I read it, though.

Kerry watched the man in the living room like a hawk. Vik was coming over for his weekly check ups and Kerry normally stood in the kitchen to watch over but to give the two space. Last month is when he managed to get V down from the space station, and the two had been attached at the hip ever since. Rarely leaving each other’s eye sight or even leaving each others touch.

V had rarely spoken, and Kerry thought he knew why. The messages he had sent when V had gone MIA. They were awful and Kerry knew he shouldn’t have said those things, but he didn’t know V would ever see them. Neither of them talked about it, or really talked at all these days. V just stayed tucked into his chest, as if trying to hide himself from the city.

“Kerry? You in there?” Vik asked, leaning on the counter and Kerry wondered how long he had been standing there. He nodded, showing Vik he had his attention now.

“Well good news, he’s gonna be okay. Whatever they did to him up there saved his life.. has he talked at all?”

“No..” Kerry said softly, looking over at his partner with a frown. “Not a damn word.”

Vik frowned, looking at his son. “Well, a depression was bound to happen, no one goes through that only to come out fine.. we just gotta keep him on bedrest, hydrated, fed. See if you can maybe get him to go outside on the balcony? Talk to him a bit. Being in here with the windows shut can’t be good for either of you.” Vik said, despite him being way younger than Kerry he sounded like the father Kerry never had.

“I will, thanks Vik.” He said, watching the man leave.

“Same time next week.” He said as the door slid shut behind him, Kerry let his head drop.

He grabbed V a drink on his way over and placed it on the coffee table before the man moved, giving Kerry space to lay down and V to lay on top him of him. He helped him get settled, tucking him under his chin as always and leg thrown over his hip. Kerry rubbed his back, kissing his forehead.

They laid in the dark and silence for a while, still trying to get used to one another. But eventually, he felt V look up at him, pressing a small kiss to his chin to get his attention, like he needed to do that. He was hyperaware of what V was doing at all times, and vise versa.

“How’d Little Big Corporats turn out?” The question was soft, V’s voice honestly wouldn’t have been heard if the two were right on top of each other. But Kerry couldn’t help but smile, kissing his forehead.

“You wanna watch?” Kerry asked, feeling V already shifting to turn towards the Tv, pressing his back against Kerry’s chest. “Yeah. You left me in suspense.” V said, making sure that he was fulling touching Kerry before activating the TV.

Kerry kissed the back of his head and hoped. He hoped this means V was coming back. He hoped this meant the shadows were moving so Kerry could finally get through to V again. He lost him twice now, he couldn’t lose him a third time.

He pressed a kiss to V’s temple, holding him closer as the show started. Kerry was falling in love, and for once he knew, he knew V would never hurt him.
