Hello Great Audience!!! It's the elephant in the room, the one thing no one wants to bring up when the conversation shifts to finance and economics:  year after year, people who have borrowed student loans are becoming a greater risk to default. It happens all the time, but unlike other loans - car loans, home loans, etc - there is often little to no protection against persistent and cyclical nonpayment and interest penalties. The end result of this continuous cycle of debt is a large portion of the population paying a greater percentage of their earnings for years and even decades, with barely an end in sight.

Unfortunately, the studies and statistics paint an even more frightening picture.  One study has found that more than half of all recent college graduates are either unemployed or underemployed.  Additionally, a recent Brookings Institute study concluded of all borrowers who entered college in 2004, as many as 40% may default on their student loans within the next two years.

They default, and the economy fails.  It's as simple as that.  Economists will tell you at this scale, loan failure turns into a domino effect, in turn knocking down lender after lender, and causing banks small and large to come up short on paper.  Look at any history book and you'll find that behind every major economic downturn, there was a lending crisis.  In 1929, it was leverage against securities.  In 2008, it was mortgages.

This time around, it could be student loans – unless we do something now.
