Season 3- The Lay of the Land
Tumblr media
So we know how important it is to understand the layout of the bear- the vision, so to speak, is as detailed as two tops and a booth, a sandwich window, outdoor seating, etc.
For the teaser, Notice this is the only time we get a wide shot and almost a tour of The Bear as a whole; we see the expo station, the kitchen layout, the front of the house, and even the outdoors as they show a view of Chicago.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Knowing the restaurant's layout is important; we're getting 'the layout of the land', which will help us dive deeper into Carmy's past at EMP.
It's been mentioned here a few times how The Bear looks so similar to EMP, which Carmy helped design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sidebar BTS knowledge: Thanks to @angelica4equity, this is the photo of the restaurant where EMP was filmed. Even the expo window and lighting are similar to The Bear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just like in season 2, where we learned about the menu and its ties to Carmy's family history, and as he had a hard time letting go of seven fishes, he's going to have a hard time letting go of the abuse and stress cycle he experienced at Eleventh Madison. We're going to go deeper into the experience in New York- maybe that's why we have a few New York references in season 2, such as Claire going to medical school and cousin Michelle explaining how alive you feel in New York. So, last season foreshadows where we're going for season three.
We will explore his past as a chef and as one of the best CDCs in the entire United States of America. However, Carmy will no longer have Sydney's voice in his head, reminding him of who he is; instead, he will disappear into his mind as he focuses on the star. He will focus on the task as he did in New York. He just kept going, but a part of him is ready to break out of his past. Instead of disappearing further into his work, will he try to move forward in healthier ways? Or will we get focused Carmy? The Carmy Berzatto in New York?

Live version! My honey and I saw this song performed live in Duluth ... a while ago and it was The Shit. Definitely gives some Neu/hallogallo vibes, doesn't it? With a little more rising action.
I guess I decided to start posting these regularly three days a week, so this is an Extra. ❤️

Sonic Youth - Central Park SummerStage, New York City, June 26, 2003
Just over 20 years ago, Sonic Youth was back in NYC, back in Central Park. This time, they were opening for Wilco, who were then riding high on the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot wave. It would've been an odd pairing a few years earlier, but the two bands' paths were converging in the early 00s — thanks primarily to Jim O'Rourke. Thank you, Jim.
Murray St. was still dominating setlists in 2003, but the band was already cooking up some new stuff that would eventually appear on 2004's Sonic Nurse — this show kicks off with a long, languorous "Peace Attack," one of Sonic Youth's loveliest reveries. Less lovely is "Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream," a tune I've never quite cottoned to, in spite of its title.
Oh well! Plenty of other rad sounds to get into, including an extremely nice "Rain On Tin" and a "Karenology" that's even longer than usual, its feedback spilling out onto the Upper West Side. "Sympathy for the Strawberry" is magnificent, too — listen closely and you'll hear that strangest of sounds: a keyboard on a Sonic Youth song! I had always thought it was Jim on the organ, but no, it's Lee, adding some Terry-Riley-plays-"Sister Ray" vibes to the proceedings. Very very nice. Sonic Youth hadn't forgotten their scuzzy Lower East Side roots; the encore includes a ripping version of the old Confusion Is Sex fave "Making The Nature Scene."
And what about Wilco!? They too were looking towards the future, playing a bunch of tunes from the then-in-progress A Ghost Is Born. Most interesting is the new-to-me arrangement of "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" which is inching towards its final monomaniacal motorik moves but retaining a certain melodic power-pop bounce. I like it! Check out the whole show here.

June 13, 1979: Candy-O released
Tumblr media
In June 1979, the second album by The Cars was released. The new wave Boston band made quite a splash with their first album and for the second they brought in producer Roy Thomas Baker known for his work with Queen. Everyone talks about the debut, but this one has quite a few bangers like "Let's Go", "Dangerous Type" and the title track. Happy 45th Candy-O!
June 15, 1989: Bleach released
Tumblr media
In June 1989, Nirvana's debut album was released. The album pre-dated Dave Grohl and drums were courtesy of the highly underrated Chad Channing, and on a few tracks Melvins’ Dale Crover (who I spoke with about this album in 2017). Here is my piece I wrote about the album in 2014. Happy 35th Bleach!
June 15, 1999: The White Stripes released

Happy 40th Karate Kid!
June 22, 2004: A Ghost is Born released
Tumblr media
In June 2004 the 5th album by Wilco was released. Following up Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was a tall task, but this was quite a follow up. This is an album I got that Summer and listened to it quite a bit on my disc man that Summer (before I got an iPod). There's some solid tracks here and notably "Spiders (Kidsmoke)", a 10 min. slow burn build-up that blows up at a certain point in the song. Happy 20th AGIB!

Wilco Kick Off the Weekend and a Three-Night Run at the Beacon Theatre on Friday
Tumblr media
Wilco – Beacon Theatre – June 21, 2024
Like many a Wilco fan, I look back to 2004’s A Ghost Is Born with certain fondness, not least because it was an inflection-point epoch. Before touring the Ghost material — which is to say, before Wilco rounded out the band lineup we would come to know over the two decades since with guitar sorcerer Nels Cline and multi-instrumentalist wonder Pat Sansone — Wilco had only just begun to push at the artier, more experimental edges of their invigorating, countrified indie-rock, hinting at what might come next.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After that, Jeff Tweedy and Co. were totally indulging those edges: Ghost inaugurated an era of Wilco songs and shows that could be tightly compact or sprawling and annihilating and psychedelic, and today usually are all of those things, where even the quietest and most delicate tunes have simmering noise-rock rage just beneath them and are better for it. Wilco can be so sweetly on. They can go so wildly off. It’s all good. And as the size of their playable oeuvre has doubled since — including a prolific run of new material since the pandemic — they’ve refined what they do even further. They wear their “great modern rock” bona fides well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wilco shows have a way of feeling casually epic. At the Beacon on Friday — the first of three for the band, back in the broiling city — they started out confident and workmanlike and then, gradually, both relaxed the vibe and upped the intensity. Tweedy was his usual affable, lightly sardonic self, steering them through a well-blended run of classics from all eras (“Handshake Drugs,” “Passenger Side,” “I’m the Man Who Loves You”), more recent tunes and obscurities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was some deference to Ghost material — among the standouts, the sensational, Beatles-like “Hummingbird” just never gets old, and the crowd felt it deeply — but there was at least as much from 2022’s Cruel Country and 2023’s Cousin, the pandemic Wilco albums whose songs yield some of their most interesting experiments yet. “Falling Apart (Right Now),” from the former, is an actual, chicken-pickin’ country song, but one that isn’t so much a throwback to Wilco’s early, pre-millennium alt-country days as it is what the band might sound like if they took this version of the band back to that aesthetic. And yet, “Bird Without a Tail/Base of My Skull,” from that same album, has very little country at all: a woozy, jangling build that on record ebbs into rustic psychedelia but here, live, opened up, became a sonic voyage, the band all in protracted instrumental jamming at once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When they go for it, they really go for it. Long masters of setlist construction, Wilco built on a strong first hour and then cranked up things, using the last third of the show on a run through some of their richest material: “Heavy Metal Drummer,” “The Late Greats,” the deceptively delicate, right-in-the-feels “Jesus Etc.,” the much-beloved hymn “California Stars,” the shoegaze-hypnotic choogle of “Spiders (Kidsmoke)” at the close of a four-song encore. And every time you think you’ve previously heard the best of Cline laying waste to “Impossible Germany” — a pensive tune that in fact houses a seven-plus-minute, no-holds-barred guitar excursion — it ends up feeling like the first time, with Friday’s showstopper a wiry adventure of maybe-this-feels-like-Eddie Hazel-meets-David-Gilmour-but-no-it’s-actually-just-Nels-doing-Nels-and-holy-shit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wilco’s individual players get plenty of love: Tweedy, Cline, Sansone, the might-be-MVP Glenn Kotche on drums, the stalwart John Stirratt on bass, the never-not-on-point Mikael Jorgensen on keys. Less talked about, and ever more apparent as they age, is how well over 20 years they’ve jelled as an ensemble and move as one organism over songs for whom this many players and this much musicality might be too much in an arena, let alone a theater. That they’ve also kept all this from becoming mechanical — that every Wilco show still feels fresh and unforced — suggests there are many more Wilco epochs yet to come. —Chad Berndtson | @Cberndtson

Syd & Carmy- Romantic Beats
Preface:
Studying this I see the second season uses steps 3-7 since we had our chemical equation and met cute the 1st season. You'll see gif examples 3-7 that show the beats of the season two.
Billy Mernit defines the “seven basic romantic comedy beats” in his book  Writing the Romantic Comedy. I'm observing that writing a romcom for a TV series is like a rollercoaster for beats, taking curves and dips that keep the series at a pace where the viewer is guessing. So beats repeat themselves and set themselves up for the next season.
The romantic beats are described as--
1. The Chemical Equation - The setup, there's something wrong in the protagonist's life. There's a missing piece in the main character's story. This is where we identify the protagonist's external and/or internal conflict.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. The meet cute or catalyst - The incident that brings them together - and this should relate to the theme of the story. This meeting sets the tone for their relationship.
When the secondary lead is introduced- there should be some hints that this romantic interest is the missing piece of the Protagonist's chemical equation.
The Bear: I'd also add that with romantic comedies, the meet-cute should have some humor in it. (What’s UPS, is that in Chicago, or?) . As we talk on this platform- the meet cute was the proper example of a romcom.
Tumblr media
3. The Sexy Complication -This is the first proper clash between the heroine and the hero. Higher stakes define the main character's goals. Typically, the external problem keeps them apart, or you can use internal conflict that keeps them apart. Traditionally occurring at the end of Act 1, a new development that raises story stakes and clearly defines the protagonist’s goal.
Season One episode Three: Syd is officially the sous chef and has a hard time with the staff. She comes in with the intention of changing The Beef for the better, however, Carmy is stuck in his old ways and past toxic experiences in the kitchen.
Season two episode three: The first clash starts 2x03 Sundae, after their technical meet cute- 2x02 pasta showing new closeness for season 2, however After 2x03 Sundae we see repeats of the sexy complication- since Syd and Carmy's relationship is the plot of the show- the stakes rise as the pressure to open The Bear is approaching and Claire comes into the picture- causing a bigger complication between Syd & Carmy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. The Hook. The midpoint scene sticks the two characters together. There's no way out, and this should reflect the theme of the movie.
This hints at the outcome of the relationship and gives hints of the potential between the two characters. There can be sexual tension involved or a detailed moment that shows the two characters are becoming closer.
Season one episodes Three and Five: Syd and Carmy reach an understanding and episodes three and five show vulnerability as Carmy reveals his brother was an addict and Syd shares the failure of Sheridan Road catering.
Season Two Episode Nine: After complications, Syd and Carmy reach a moment of understanding. This is the most romantically suggestive scene with prominent sexual tension.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. The swivel - This is the moment after the hero and heroine have become closer, when their conflict comes back again, in a different form.  a turning point that makes the stakes higher and hurts the main character's goal, or vice versa, leading to a changed goal. The main character is forced to choose between love and the goal.
Season one and two: in both seasons Carmy loses his cool with Sydney. The first season she walks away and the season two Syd calms Carmy down.
What's interesting is that the song Spiders (kidsmoke) by Wilco plays in both scenes giving us hints of parallels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Dark Moment – This is the consequence of the swivel. The characters have to reveal private motivations, and it seems that either the love or the goal is lost forever. The main character is at their most vulnerable point.
Season One Episode 8: The revealing of private motivation occurs in 1x08 When Carmy is in al-anon. He reveals that his trying to fix the restaurant was him trying to fix the relationship with Mikey. At this point, love (Sydney) and the goal (fixing my relationship with Mikey) are lost forever. The vulnerable point is Carmy facing the chaos in his internal world.
Season Two Episode 10: I'm a fսckin'... I'm a fսckn' psycho. That's why. That's why I'm good at what I do. That's how I operate. I am the best because I didn't have any of this fսck¡n' bullshit, right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wherein the consequences of the swivel decision yield disaster; generally, the humiliating scene where private motivations are revealed, and either the relationship and/or the protagonist’s goal is seemingly lost forever.
7. Joyful Defeat – reconciliation between the characters that remind the audience how important the relationship is to them, usually (but not always) with a happy ending that implies marriage – but usually at the cost of something the main character has had to sacrifice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Season One Episode 8: Two tops? Booths?
Nuff said.
Season two: We're left with a cliffhanger for the Joyful defeat. Will the reconciliation happen in season three? Will we have a happy ending and what will Carmy sacrifice? Will he choose love or the goal? Will Syd choose love or the goal of getting the star?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh the slow burn is real! Storer, what are you doing here? This is a romcom!
