I actually feel for Alicent and her kids. Don't get me wrong, because the Greens did horrible and inexcusable things, but if you do think about it from a fraction of her perspective it makes sense.
If Aegon doesn't sit that throne, then it means she survived at least four pregnancies, years of an unhappy and borderline abusive marriage, losing the love and trust of her closest friend, being used as a pawn of her father - all for nothing.
She will have gone through a lifetime of loss, heartbreak and trauma and none of it will have mattered in the end.
And it still stays a theme throughout the Dance, the sacrifices Alicent had made to put Aegon on the Iron Throne:
She lost Viserys. Of course, he was horrid to her and her children, but he was still her husband, and her King, who she had looked after in his ailing years. Regardless of how he had treated her, there would have been some element of grief - considering she had been the one caring for him.
She lost Jaehaerys. Her son's heir, her daughter's baby, right in front of her very eyes, murdered cruelly. And in the wake of her grandson's murder, came Aegon's rage and drunkeness and Helaena's madness - the things that led to their downfall.
She lost Maelor. She must have felt even a whisper of responsibility towards him, having become his de facto carer. To lose not one, but two grandsons, in such a violent and brutal manner, would be a heavy weight on Alicent's heart.
She lost Helaena. Her only daughter. She could see herself in Helaena, and she must’ve wondered - had she subjected her daughter to the same fate as her own? After so much suffering and torture and trauma of watching Jaehaerys die and hearing of the death of Maelor, still a young child, the child she had named. Meant that her beloved, sweet Helaena, no matter how quick her death, would have died in agony.
She lost Aemond. The boy who wished for a dragon, the boy who hugged her as he bled from his empty eye socket, the boy who calmed her by saying that in losing an eye he had gained a dragon. Was no more. She would have known about his rampages in the Riverlands, surely, but losing one's own child is still a harsh blow to any mother.
She lost Daeron. Her youngest child, who won vengeance for his nephew, and fought alongside his kin, her son, only sixteen when he died.
She lost Rhaenyra. Once her best friend, then her stepdaughter, then her enemy. No matter how long it had been or what they had done to one another, I still wonder if Alicent felt a pang of grief after Aegon had ordered his half-sister killed by Sunfyre.
All this death, all this suffering, all this bloodshed, just to put her eldest son, her last standing child, firmly on the Iron Throne, so that she can justify the years of suffering she endured at the hands of her father and Viserys.
And then he just. dies. Poisoned by his own men. He had only managed a two year reign.
And all that suffering.
All that sacrifice.
All the loss that she endured to make him King.
Was all for nothing.
Her final child. Her last son. The man she had given everything to keep in power. Poisoned like a rat.
And all Alicent had left
was her traumatised, orphaned granddaughter Jaehaera
and her own grief, madness, and self-pity.
This was all she had to show for the years of suffering she endured.
No wonder she died so alone, sat in her chambers, wanting nothing more than to see her sons and her sweet Helaena one last time.

the reader velaryon is the second wife of Viserys, he treats her well because even when he was married to Aemma he liked the reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I imagine the reader (Baelon, Aegon, Healena, Aemond, Daeron) is his mother. Rhaenyra is also his biological daughter or was never born. Because I don't want it to be a war. If you want a version where Rhaenyra is her daughter, feel free to write.
Viserys had never had a love marriage to Aemma. This marriage was a duty. He had never mistreated her. They had become good friends. But that didn't stop her heart from wanting you. Y/N Velaryon was the King's first love. Viserys clung to her dreams every time Aemma had a failed pregnancy and was unable to give her an heir. She thought that her precious love could produce healthy pregnancies and healthy heirs. Queen Aemma did not manage to survive her last birth. Soon Viserys was to be married. Seizing this opportunity, she marries the reader. Viserys supports the reader with every pregnancy. He loves all children and treats them equally. Their love has managed to remain a subject in history books even after centuries. It gives a lot of gifts to the reader. He always tries to please his queen. He is overprotective of his wife and children.

Jaehaerys: *chooses Baelon over Rhaenys despite the law saying that a niece inherits before an uncle*
Fandom: She was usurped! Rhaenys should have been queen!
Viserys: *chooses Rhaenyra over Aegon despite the law saying that a son inherits before a daughter*

“And an elephant,” Lord Alyn answered insolently. “Pray, do not forget the elephant, my lord.”
~
“The harbor teems with galleys, cogs, and carracks of every sort and size, yet even so I soon found myself consorting with smugglers and pirates. We have ten thousand men in the company, as I am sure Lord Connington remembers from his years of service with us. Five hundred knights, each with three horses. Five hundred squires, with one mount apiece. And elephants, we must not forget the elephants. A pirate ship will not suffice. We would need a pirate fleet...”

You know how Jon is constantly getting ratio’ed for his bad takesᵗᵐ re the Young Dragon? Y’all ever wonder if it will be the same for Robb? Like some poor impressionable kid fifty years into the future going “I wanna grow up to be like King Robb he was an undefeated military prodigy” and their gay not-so-amiable uncle going “you know he was a horny teenage idiot who got killed at a wedding right? Didn’t even get to 17” 💀

I think people overestimate how feminist team black is. If someone brings up how Baela should be the heir to Driftmark, it's always "she would've been Queen if not for the Greens!", ignoring that 1, she would be Queen consort, not a Queen in her own right, and 2 she has a legitimate claim in her own right to Driftmark. Team Black's goal is to crown Rhaenyra, but Rhaenyra becoming Queen isn't a win for feminism because it does nothing to dismantle the rest of the patriarchal system that exists in Westeros. From what we've gotten so far, it reads that Rhaenyra wants to be the exception and not the rule. Rhaenyra has made a lot of bad political decisions, which means she can't acknowledge Baela's claim because it would weaken her own claim (blatantly admitting her eldest sons are illegitimate would not end well for her to say the least). So she betrothes Jace and Luke to Baela and Rhaena to kind of atone for that, like as a consolation prize Baela will be Queen and Rhaena will be lady of Driftmark, neither of them would hold either title in their own right. It's good matches because the kids like each other and will treat each other well, but it's not a feminist win or a feministic liberation. It's usurpation, usurpation that takes place because Rhaenyra has to do damage control after having illegitimate children and after a serious of bad political decisions (both hers and her fathers, Viserys is the arbiter of this entire mess). To me, Rhaenyra is very reminiscent of Mary Queen of Scots, I can see a lot of elements drawn from Mary's history in Rhaenyra's story and character, down to their sons eventually taking the crown they failed to claim/keep.
#hotd#hotd spoilers#house of the dragon#house of the dragon spoilers#Rhaenyra targaryen critical#I'm going to do a rewatch prior to season 2 & I'm going to analyse the bad political decisions from vis & Rhaenyra that lead to the dance#like by no means the only factors at play lets not forget otto daemon larys etc#but it's an interesting factor that the fandom doesn't really acknowledge#and a lot of Rhaenyra's bad political decisions are understandable because of her youth and because viserys does fuck all to prepare her#like even if she wasn't who he choose as heir she should've been given a better political education as a princess#but vis fails his most of his other four kids in that regard to#i mean he also fails to acknowledge them or remember them but anyways#he is a huge part of the reason aegon and aemond became he they did#props to whoever probably alicent for sending daeron to oldtown so he could grow up well adjusted#alicent: i'm writing a letter to daeron is there anything you would like to say to him?#viserys: daemon? why are you writing to daemon?#alicent: daeron?#viserys: who?#alicent: our son? the one you sent to squire in oldtown?#viserys: i think i'd remember if we had a son who's name was one letter different to my brothers#viserys: in fact i do alicent do you mean the one who lost an eye?#alicent: *screaming internally*#viserys targaryen#king viserys#rhaenyra is such an interesting character but i hate how the fandom sanctified her because how dare characters be complex and have flaws#like you dont have to justify their actions or bend over backwards to deny their faults to like a character you know 😭#and the same thing is done to daemon who is far more fucked up and far more flawed in the show than the fandom allows#i hate the team stuff tho i get hbo going for it as a marketing move that was genius but my god are certain stans insufferable#the entire point of the dance is that its a pointless tragedy there's no good or bad side theyre both awful in their own ways#but thats a longer rant for another time outside of the tags

I’m thinking of a post-Dance major AU where Lucerys and Daeron are the last main survivors (barring the children and Alicent), and they’re both just…so fucking tired.
They’ve lost pretty much all their family to a war neither of them wanted in the first place. The realm is in shambles, and it seems like their factions will tear what’s left apart out of spite.
To stop things from escalating even more, Lucerys - newly crowned and already suffocating under the weight of being King - reaches out to Daeron, the uncle he never really knew, the one kept away, the only one left, and just asks if they can stop.
And Daeron…he’s losing.
His brothers and sister are gone. His grandsire dead. His supporters defecting or so wroth they’d bleed the realm dry to put an unasked for crown on his head.
Only his mother and niece remain, captives in the Red Keep - and…and his nephew is calling for peace. Asking, desperately, for them to put an end to things before they destroy each other completely.
He’s exhausted. Heartbroken. Just wants to close his eyes and lay down and cry for all they’ve lost.
So he accepts.
He meets with his nephew, half-expecting to be imprisoned. To be executed like he knows Lucerys’ council calls for. To finally get to rest.
Instead, he’s given a hug that damn near breaks his ribs, a tear-soaked face pressing into his neck, and a choked voice whispering thank you thank you thank you uncle into his skin.
Instead, he’s given a bath and food and is taken to see his mother and niece and gets to cradle them close.
Instead, he’s given an offer and a pin and a job.
