Strip off the schtick and Kirin J Callinan’s talents as a songwriter are even more obvious. If I Could Sing shows how his sound has always been inspired by the melodrama of New Romantic and heedless pace of technopop (especially YMO), as well as bits of ‘big music’, vapourwave, hip-hop, new jack swing. On previous releases he’s seemed shrouded in aesthetics or ideas intended to provoke or distract; here is much less of that and perhaps the greatest insight yet into his artistry.

When the earth had shaken violently and a great light sliced open part of the sky, it was sufficient to say some unrest had settled in the minds of the followers of the Lamb. Some panicked by hiding in their homes, others threw themselves in prayer for safety, and then there were those who had become curious.

Their Leader had yet to return from their crusade of news on the strange phenomena.  It wouldn’t be long until the less perceptive brothers and sisters in faith would wander out see what this terrible wonder could be distracted and guard down just long enough for that terrible Helob to snatch them up for a snack. 

To avoid arguing with the spider merchant to save yet another capricious follower, Frankie volunteered to investigate the light. They were not sure what to expect- though clearly something of significance had occurred. The weeping statue of the crown had vanished, in its place an open maw of red light. 

It radiated danger and promise of horrors to all that dared to venture into it. That was the easier change to comprehend, for where Death’s door once stood was the source of the strange new light.  

The Mouse threw a paw up to shield her eyes against the radiant light trying to focus on the being at it’s center. The more their eyes adjusted, the greater sense of dread began to fill their being. 

It wasn’t something meant for mortal eyes to witness. Thoughts of this creature being something great, powerful and terrible drew similar fears one might of had towards the Bishops - but this was something more. 

They wanted to scream, to bend the knee and beg for forgiveness for daring to try and understand what kind of creature it possibly could of been once it had spoken. They couldn’t fathom it. It was a fools errand to try. 

Their legs trembled, threatening to bend to this notion, but Frankie remained silent and still watched the being with the best poker face she could muster.

“..You are not the first to attest this. I am sturdier than I look.” Despite witnessing such a great being, she had kept her voice neutral , focusing on everything but it’s face, trying to buy time to become a little braver.

“Or maybe I am a fool who’s curiosity won out that wants to understand what exactly had taken up residence outside of my home.”

That music video with the Screaming Cowboy and Miike Snow's Genghis Khan are both on an incredible spectrum that my feeble semi-mortal brain does not have the capacity to understand.
