I am so far outside the fandom but my god I keep seeing and hearing (because I might not have seen an episode of Glee in over 5 years but I do still listen to multiple Glee podcasts - ok maybe I am still in the fandom) the same old argument about Klaine being toxic and Brittana being perfect. And my guys... You did not watch the show.

Twitter is the place for this discussion but I have too many feelings and not enough characters. So I will just say those people are wrong.

Truthfully the Blaine v Kurt poll is the best outcome I could've hoped for like. They're my two favorite characters in the whole show. They're the best ship, they're the best people

If Kurt wins, yay that's my favorite character he deserved it. If they tie then that's just iconic obviously. If Blaine wins yay that's my other favorite character he also deserved it AND it will piss off the most people and be the funniest. But even if Kurt wins it's gonna be by like. The teeniest margin so really it says they're both equally loved

Basically all I'm saying is that there is not a bad result in that poll for me personally and that's all that matters <3

Advice from a Queer Almost-40 BuckTommy Shipper

Over the last several months, there's been a one-sided war brewing between Buddie shippers and BuckTommy shippers. As we get ready for Season 8, I want to give all of you fellow BuckTommy/Tevan/Kinley shippers some advice:

Let me take you way back to the early-2010s. Glee was quite popular in the cultural zeitgeist. The show spawned a plethora of ships including Finchel, Brittana, Samcedes, and Fabrey. However, there was one ship that reigned supreme on Beyoncé and Al Gore's internet. If you were on Tumblr during this time you definitely remember the chokehold Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson aka Klaine had on the Glee fandom.

Now I'll admit, at first, I was into the two glee club gays being together but then episode 2x06 aired. For those of you unfamiliar with the show, episode 2x06 titled "Never Been Kissed" is episode where closeted football jock Dave Karofsky cornered Kurt in the boys' lockerroom and kissed him. What followed was some of the best storytelling in the history of the show.

Over the next few seasons, we watched Dave Karofsky come to terms with his sexuality, apologize to Kurt for his relentless bullying, finally embrace his sexuality, get outed, and attempt to un-alive himself. Those of us who initially hated Dave and his initial treatment of Kurt became fans of him due to how realistic he was. If you went to high school in the early-2000s, chances are you either knew someone like Karofsky or you were him. That's why he resonated with so many of us in the queer community.

However, the showrunners weren't invested in Dave and Kurt becoming an item. You have to remember, this was the era of listening to the fandom and giving them exactly what they wanted. The fandom wanted Rachel and Finn to be together so that's what we got. The fandom wanted Brittany and Santana to be together so that's what we got. And what the fandom wanted was Kurt and Blaine.

Till this day, I still resent the fact that the showrunners and writers went the safe route when it came to couples on Glee. For the most part, all of their main pairings were expected and boring. Over a decade removed from the show, a lot of folks have come around to the idea that maybe Kurt and Blaine aren't the #couplegoals they initially thought. A lot of us will forever wonder just how different (and possibly better) the show would have been if they took a chance on Kurt and Dave.

Fast-forward to the year 2024. We have, on another Ryan Murphy show, Klaine and Kurtofsky 2.0. The moment Eddie came on the scene back in Season 2, folks on the internet started shipping him with Buck. Nevermind that these two were coded as platonic friends, here we had, once again, two good-looking guys played by two actors who have impeccable chemistry.

Much like Klaine, a lot of us see Buddie as boring. The ship smacks of cis straight women overlly fascinated by two good-looking, masculine guys. It reminds me of the overabundance of m/m romance written by straight women which have little interest in showcasing real queer male relationships and instead serve as fantasy fulfillment for straight women using two queer men as avatars to satisfy what they feel is lacking in their own heterosexual relationships. I don't necessary have a problem with those books existing but I do take issue with that kind of storytelling overshadowing queer male content written by queer male writers.

Whew! Now that I got that out of my system, let me tell you what I loved most about the latest season of 9-1-1. It seems the showrunners and writers of this show took note of what happened with Glee and they decided to go a different route. Instead of listening to the relentless noise on the internet, they have decided to not go the safe route.

Enter: Tommy Kinard.

The romance between Buck and Tommy is truly revolutionary. As someone who grew up consuming the queer media of the 90s and early-2000s, it is quite refreshing to have a couple like Evan Buckley and Tommy Kinard on primetime television. I love that many of the scenes between these two is just slice of life. Very similar to the scenes we get between Athena and Bobby and Chimney and Maddie. I've always said that true equality is when queer people can be just as mundane as straight people. Mission accomplished. Finally, we have two queer characters just existing and being happy. No AIDS. No gay-bashing. No Don't Ask Don't Tell. No epic coming out scene. Buck and Tommy are a shining example of what queer couples can and should look like in the 2020s.

So, back to my original point. When it comes to the great ship war, please do NOT let them ruin something so groundbreaking and special. If the showrunners wanted , they could have made Buck and Eddie a thing years ago. However, that's not the direction they wanted to venture. Thank you Tim Minear for not going the safe route. I look forward to all of the rich storytelling we will get in Season 8 and I have decided that whatever happens, I'm going to enjoy this era of 9-1-1. Oliver Stark and Lou Ferrigno Jr. are amazing actors but so are Angela Bassett and Peter Krause and Aisha Hinds and Kenneth Choi. All of the actors on this show, whether main or guest or supporting, are putting their whole self into crafting the characters we know and love. Regardless of what ship you champion, keep in mind that behind these beloved characters are real, human actors who do not deserve to be bullied and harrassed and threatened due to them simply doing their job. At the end of the day, everything we see on the screen is fiction.

Okay, this has gotten really long. Stepping off of my soapbox. Remember ladies and gentlemen, it's just a show. And although it makes us feel real emotions, 9-1-1 nor Glee is real life.

Idk about you, but there was a period of ATLA fans trying their damn hardest to convince me that Katara didn't get any hate. And then when I counted that yes, she did (I didn't make up all of 2020 and 2021 ffs), they told me to calm down?? Like, am I the only one who's experienced this?

IT’S SO WEIRD! It’s not even just revisionist history, it literally still happens today. Reddit is overrun with “haha Katara dead mom” jokes. Redditors really show their asses with their simultaneous contempt for Katara and their fervent defense of Ka/taang.

On Tumblr I blame the Zu/kka shippers lmao (who also tend to be the ones who claim to be neutral multishippers, as if multishipping wasn’t the norm in this fandom, yes even amongst the ZKs). Some m/m shippers really want to get rid of the female character in the way of their m/m ship. Which, hey, shipping is supposed to be fun, and if you put Katara with Aang or Azula or Haru or Suki or whoever with zero development for the purpose of your Zu/kka, there’s nothing wrong with that! They do that with Mai and Ty Lee, no drama, bc Mai is not so well developed as a character.

It’s just that…instead of admitting they want to get rid of Katara so that they can enjoy their Zu/kka, they emphasize how she’s so mean to their woobie Zuko, or to their woobie Sokka. Then you get absolutely wild mental gymnastics that are just Katara slander with more steps, like the baffling “homophobic Katara” headcanon (as if Katara, who allowed a fortuneteller to dictate her breakfast and spent the entire show waffling over whether she likes a boy, is any less likely to be queer). People on Tumblr don’t hate on Katara directly anymore because they know it’s misogynistic, so instead we are subjected to a wide variety of random ass takes. The latest form of Katara slander is “just let her be a kid” and assigning her qualities to Sokka, which I categorically refuse to read, because it pisses me off. People are so weird about Katara.

I think this must be something specific to Zu/kka, not m/m ships in general. My first major ship was Klaine and female character slander was not an issue at all. Anyway I ship all variations of Fire Sib x Water Sib (except the incest ones, which apparently requires clarifying nowadays), but Zu/kka is becoming my least fave of the bunch due to fandom shenanigans.

A Kiss While In Danger

“I knew that I’d get you alone sometime,” a voice rings out in the empty hallway. Blaine jumps in surprise – he was sure he was alone at school, picking up the history book he accidentally left in his locker. The football practice is over by now and everyone should be out. The hallway is indeed empty still, so no one is after him.

“Oh yeah?” another voice mocks. “Why would you want something like that?”

That voice Blaine recognizes a little too well. It’s Kurt Hummel, attitude in a well-dressed package, with skulls and chains, and hair dyed with purple streaks. Blaine might or might not entertain a slight crush on the other boy.

Kurt and the other boy are just behind the corner, close to the locker room doors. Blaine doesn’t need to go that way. It would probably be safer to just go out and forget he ever heard anything, but a part of him feels like he has to intervene, to do something, because he’s there. Kurt is not alone with whoever it is thinks so.

Without thinking it any longer Blaine closes his locker and walks towards the voices head held high. “He isn’t alone,” he says loudly as he rounds the corner.

It’s Kurt and Dave Karofsky facing each other there in a weird stand-off. They both turn to look at him. Kurt’s eyes widen in slight surprise, but Karofsky looks downright murderous.

“Fuck you and your disgusting plans – goodbye!” Kurt throws at Karofsky and strides to Blaine, grabbing hold of his hand and pulling him along. “Come on, we need to run.”

Blaine follows mindlessly as Kurt starts running out towards the exit. He has no idea what is going on, but Kurt Hummel is holding his hand and Dave Karofsky is running after them and hurling insults at them as they go. Blaine’s heart is beating loudly in his ears. He’s been good at staying under the radar, just a couple of slushies here and there. He might get beat up this time even though Karofsky is alone. The mere thought makes him panic, ugly, terrifying memories rising to the surface.

They burst through the doors and keep on running to the parking lot, never letting go of each other. Kurt steers them right to his Navigator and once they reach it, he drops Blaine’s hand and crowds him against the passenger side instead.

“Thank you,” Kurt breathes and before Blaine can react, there are soft, gentle lips pressing against his own.

Kurt Hummel is kissing him, moving his lips ever so slightly on his mouth, pulling Blaine’s bottom lip between his own. An unbidden sound escapes from Blaine’s throat and he grasps on to Kurt’s arms, holding him close, answering the kiss as best he can.

“Fucking fags,” Karofsky spits out, closer than Blaine thought he would be.

“Into the car,” Kurt says, opens the passenger door and climbs in and over behind the wheel. Blaine hops in and pulls the door closed just as Kurt gets his foot on the gas and drives away, leaving Karosky standing still.

Blaine certainly didn’t think his afternoon would lead to this when he turned back to get his history book.

my main ship for quinn is rachel i just really like their dynamic and history and i really wish the creators made them canon. i do enjoy some quinntana and fabrevans just for funsies as well. other than that i don’t really have any romantic ships for quinn. i think her canon relationships with finn and puck served their purposes in her life but i prefer them as friends with some awkward history

my non-romantic otp for this character

quinncedes my beloved, their friendship is so sweet to me and i find them so endearing. i also love the unholy trinity’s friendship they’re very awful to each other but very fun

my unpopular opinion about this character

i don’t know if this is unpopular per se but i think quinn was in the right for trying to get her baby away from shelby. she obviously had ulterior motives but shelby was real fucked up and her relationship with puck was terrible and shouldn’t have happen ever even remotely in the first place

one thing i wish would happened/had happened with this character in canon

obviously for faberry to happen but more specifically i wish we got to see more of her friendship with rachel after graduation; i feel like the writers always ignored a lot of the supposed closeness the nds had in favor of drama (or yknow just rachel’s life or whatever) but the bonds between all of them would’ve been nice to see

blaine obvs my otp in the most genuine way literally what got me back into writing, but also i do like the idea of kurtbastian i just need to get myself more used to it before i really dive into them. jeffbastian is a little cute to me especially because of how bright we burn but never gonna be a super serious ship of mine. other than that, no one really or at least no one canon. many nameless faces have been in his past and future of course

my sweet match made in hell sebtana, i think about my stepcousins au so much i’ve forgotten they’re not actually canon and have talked like twice but they’re still my favs. they’re team rocket in another life

my unpopular opinion about this character

that he’s not heartless skank trash and actually a person who’s yeah pretty shitty at times but everyone in this show is pretty shitty at times and that doesn’t make them evil. it’s really easy to villainize sebastian and i get it, honestly i’ve villainized the shit out of some of the other characters before in my head, but at the end of the day he’s some petty competitive guy who wanted to fuck his crush and had the bigotry of most teenage boys at any point of the history of society. he’s neither a perfect angel of a character nor the devil and he’s got potential to grow like any of us. i don’t really fault anyone for being pissed it just kinda makes me sad because he’s my fav, but whatever yknow

one thing i wish would happened/had happened with this character in canon

pretty obvious that i wish seblaine got together but beyond that i wish they became friends again at any point in the show. i know because of the timing between flash and later seasons of the show + the overwhelming love of klaine, seblaine both platonically and/or romantically didn’t really stand a chance but i feel like they could’ve at least hinted at a reunion between the two.
