dan was already upset when luci told him he was dating someone but refused to introduce them, a fact he vented about to bianca once they started seeing each other. only to end up feeling very vindicated when luci and his mystery partner broke up, of course he ended up feeling bad about how happy he felt considering how completely heartbroken luci was afterwards. it went on like that for a few months with dan comforting luci while still being kinda mad luci refused to really actually talk about who he was even dating.

then one day geist shows up at his doorstep out of nowhere pleading their case cause they are currently getting framed for murder and dan is the only detective they trust. dan is maybe willing to listen until luci walks in, sees geist, and immediately starts bawling. geist reveals why "wait, he never told you? we dated." dan is now mad a both geist for dating the man he's been in love with for practically his whole life and at luci for dating the fucking thief he's been trying to catch for over a year now. then the other thieves show up to try and fix whatever the hell is going on.

but then dan sees bianca, his girlfriend, there. who is apparently also a thief and never told him. but more importantly! she knew that geist was the one who was dating and subsequently broke luci's heart and didn't tell him

to say the least the fact that dan ever managed to end up helping geist with the whole framed for murder thing at all is a miracle, dan is a saint

Ophelia saw Omari for an emergency session to work through what happened with Hector, but today is her next official retraiting session. It's a big one too.

Xander: You're positive you're ready? I'm sure she'd understand if you rescheduled.

Ophelia: I'm positive. My klepto trait has been a dirty little secret since I was a teen. You're the one who proved to me that I could do something about it, and I'm not going to chicken out now. I don't like thinking about it, but talking through it might help. I'm ready.

Xander: For what it's worth, I'm proud of you, Lemon Cake. Once you get your new trait, the only thing you'll be taking is my breath away.

Ophelia: You got a tomato I can throw?

Xander: Come on, you liked that.

She did, just don't tell anybody.

Ophelia sits in anticipation while Omari begins the session.

Omari: You seem anxious. Are you in the headspace to talk about the day you got your klepto trait?

Ophelia: Yeah. I just don't really talk about it a lot. Or ever. But I think I'm ready.

Omari: That's good to hear.

Omari: I want you to describe to me in detail what your teen birthday was like. From what we've discussed, your klepto trait seems like more than an unlucky random roll. Knowing what happened before getting the klepto trait could help us understand how to move past needing it.

Ophelia takes a deep breath before she starts explaining what happened.

Ophelia: Okay, well, it was the day I became a teen. I was at my grandparents' house and they were going to celebrate my birthday with me and my parents.

Ophelia, unfortunately, remembers that day all too well. She remembers the smell of the air freshener in her gran and gramps' house, she remembers the chill of the wind, and she certainly remembers sitting on a bench for several hours until her gramps realized she wasn't inside.

Walt: Hey, Fifi. What are you doing out here?

Ophelia: Waiting for Mom and Dad.

Walt: Ah. I see.

Ophelia: They promised they’d watch me blow out the candles!

This was a big deal! Her parents barely have time for her, and when they do, they make it all about studying.

Walt sighs. He’d give anything to not have to tell her this.

Walt: Buttercup, Gran just got off the phone with your dad. They stayed at the office to work late. They’re not going to make it in time to watch you blow out your candles.

Ophelia: Oh… Okay.

Walt: It’s okay to be sad, Fifi. It really stinks when the grown ups in your life let you down.

Ophelia wants to cry but she doesn't think she can.

Walt can tell Ophelia doesn’t believe him. She's never even made top five on their list of priorities.

Ophelia should have known better than to get excited. Her parents aren't exactly concerned with stupid things like birthdays or ballet recitals or happiness.

Ophelia: Can I just blow out my candles and get it over with?

Walt: Sure thing, princess.

Evelyn is seething with rage but desperately trying to hide it for Ophelia’s sake.

Ophelia: They were never there. And when they were, they made my life miserable! I kept trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe THIS time they'd act like the other kids' parents but no. They always treated me like an afterthought.

Omari: It can be difficult when those who are supposed to love us the most are emotionally or physically unavailable. It sounds like your childhood was lonely.

Ophelia: My gramps and gran did their best… But it didn't make my bad relationship with my parents hurt less.

Ophelia: You've mentioned me being lonely before. I guess I was. I didn't have a ton of friends growing up, just a few. And I never got to hang out with them outside school. They only let me do extracurriculars they thought would look good on a college application. It sucked.

Omari: I see. Sims are social beings. It seems as though your isolation led to your klepto trait, as an attempt to fill that loneliness with material goods and a rush from the thrill of the steal. But, Ophelia, you don't need to fill that loneliness anymore, do you?

Ophelia: …I guess I don't. I've got a bunch of friends I love, a great partner, and I really like his family too. And of course my cat. I… I really don't feel lonely anymore.

Omari: Sometimes a found family can be the best kind of family.

Omari: We can't control our parents, we can't make them be who we want them to be. But going out and finding the people you do care about, the ones that make life brighter? Well, it doesn't completely heal the hurt, but it sure does give you a reason to keep being your best self.

Omari: I must say, you've made excellent progress. I know this has been a long process but you've put the work in to change yourself for the better. We'll need another session or two to work on coping mechanisms for loneliness but I think you're almost ready for your new trait.

i think it's pretty obvious per my posts that i'm a big fan of breaking bad & better call saul (the abqniverse?). anyway, like, someone in a group chat i'm in sent this chart of the ratings per episode of both shows. they're basically inverse of one another.

there are a couple of reasons for this, i'm guessing: the first of which being that breaking bad aired from 2008 to 2013, and this was before the streaming boom. the second being that saul is a more character driven story, while breaking bad is more event driven, so enjoying breaking bad doesn't necessarily translate to enjoying saul.

i also think that saul fumbled the premiere a bit, hence why there was such a big dropoff in viewership after it – like, tuco salamanca is literally in the first episode, and i was a bit worried when i first watched it that it was going to be fan service-y, as i'm sure a lot of other people were. but tuco turned out to be more of a guest star than anything, and the scene was functionally a means of introducing jimmy to nacho.

it's a shame too bc imo, saul is by far the superior show. i feel like my main beef with breaking bad is that there were too many characters in it, and a lot of their arcs are either incomplete or they just aren't characterized very well.

the whole thing with bb is that, while walt is absolutely the most egregious out of all the white/schrader adults, they all are guilty of doing illegal shit when it supports some personal end for them – hank having his distaste for due process, skylar turning a blind eye and helping ted cook his books even though she knows something is off (plus her later involvement with walt's meth shenanigans), and marie shoplifting as a bad coping skill.

but marie is, like, really underdeveloped. and it sucks because understanding marie is important to understanding the show as a whole – she steals shoes after complaining that her work sneakers are ugly and being embarrassed by a rude retail girl at the store, she goes to open houses and lies about who she is (and steals things because, like, of course she does) after hank starts lashing out at her because of his ptsd. i don't know what the baby tiara thing was all about, but i have this dumb pet theory that marie and hank can't have kids and this was some kind of power move related to that – it's not lost on me that marie lies about having children every time she makes shit up about herself during her real estate klepto bender.

she's sort of a low-stakes version of walt's fractured ego & dissatisfaction and she, by my interpretation, serves as a foil that highlights just how silly the heisenberg shit really is.

the white/schrader family serves the narrative as an exploration of "why do some people become heisenberg while others don't". but, like, as much as i love the show, i think it really fumbles the execution of this. or my read could be totally wrong, i'm not sure. either way, the pieces are all there, but they don't always explore them fully.

there's also a joke in some of the sillier abqniverse fan communities of calling walt jr/flynn "breakfast" because the overwhelming majority of his scenes are him eating breakfast lmfao. he's just kind of, like, There.

the character dynamics in bcs, though, are sooooo good. the relationships between jimmy and chuck, jimmy and kim, gus and hector, mike and nacho are all well-developed and textured. i love how lalo's audacity and gus's cold cruelty play against each other. and bcs uses the tragedy of inevitability to its advantage – we know almost all of the characters (barring jimmy/saul/gene... we'll see what happens with kim and howard) are dead in the breaking bad timeline. but overwhelmingly it's just sad to see. it's dramatic tension of a different kind.

plus, bcs establishes just how terrifying gus really is. if you liked him in bb, you'll be salivating in bcs.

i don't know, i think it's criminally neglected even though it's critically acclaimed. my child will watch better call saul.

This is my first character for D&D I have ever made I try to make not so Mary Sue.

Sage Morton

Race: Half Elf

Alignment: Chaotic Neutral

Class: Rouge (Rouges use 1D6) & Druid: Circle of Spores

Background: Investigator

Personality Traits: An inquisitive mind that searches for truth, well-mannered but comes off a bit cold, however she is nice. Sage can’t leave a problem alone if she knows something doesn’t add up. Hates to see people that just go for the easy answer.

(This is what I tried to play her as but she kind of went into left field.)

Ideals: I serve truth not justice. Where justice can be blind, truth is always there. She believes in doing the right thing.

Bonds: Her caretaker and mentor was accused of a crime that resulted in him being arrested. This was Sage’s first case (she is still working on it though); she gathers enough evidence to prove that her mentor didn’t do it, but he was sentenced to death before she could get to him.

Flaws: Sage’s desire to find the truth sometimes gives her tunnel vision, even when the matter is set and done (by authority’s standards) she will still pry. Also, she has a habit of taking evidence when it is part of the case. She also steals mystery books and tends to bend the rules to get to what she wants (she is a klepto).

Description:

Sage is a 5’6 half elf woman with white skin. She has long red hair tied into a braid and she has vibrant green eyes.

Sage wears earthy dark clothing (mostly black browns and greys, she has some splashes of green) what she carries on her is a pouch, a journal on her waist, twin daggers, and a short sword. She also wears knee high, high heeled boots (it gives her like a 1 to 2 inches of height) and light armor.

Light make-up, just some maroon lipstick.

Back Story:

Sage Morton grew up with her mentor after a plague wiped out her hometown when she was about six. Sage has few memories of her parents, knowing that her dad was an elf with long brown hair and her mom a human with short black hair.

Her mentor: Urghat ScarletSpear, he was half orc investigator; he was passing through the area and found her and took pity on her, taking her in. He was 6’7 with moss green skin with light brown hair and a long scar on his right forearm from an old case. He is a rogue (he taught Sage everything he knows)

Sage is dedicated to her mentor and is willing to learn anything from him to become a great investigator. She is the Watson to Urghat but she doesn’t mind; but she has developed some issues (she is a mystery reader loves reading mysteries).

When Sage was around 16/17, Urghat was accused of a crime by an unknown noble/person and arrested. Sage was scared and excited because this was going to be her first case, but she was also scared that her mentor was arrested, and she heard that he might be executed, so she was on a time limit.

She worked day and night to find the evidence that would either get Urghat out of jail or at least cast suspicion on someone else.

Sage did find the evidence that would at least get Urghat out of jail, and she ran to the guard captain, however the guard captain realized his mistake or at least that there is not enough evidence to hold Urghat. The guard captain states with some remorse that Urghat was executed early this morning.

This made Sage realize that justice can be manipulated and is blind, therefore she doesn’t believe in it, and that an investigator needs to seek the truth, that’s what matters. She buries her mentor body and makes a vow that she will find the perpetrator that cause his death. (Not so much revenge but she wants to know why?)

Overall, Character analysis:

She bright and friendly she is Chaotic Neutral, so she does what she wants. She is not an edge lord. Will say things that will make people around her question her sanity, but she has your back in a fight.

Her journey for the truth leads her to Gaintra, and she has been a ship for 3 weeks.

Crime the Urghat was accused of:

Some important documents and materials went missing but the last person that was seen in the area and handling them was Urghat (it was a job that a friend of friend ask for him to do).

Mary pretends to be obscenely annoyed by the both of them just on principle but like. When things are bad there’s often a car idling on their street corner, keeping an eye out. Their groceries get delivered already paid for. Someone shows up to change the locks for them, install new security cameras. She shows she loves them in little ways, quiet ways.

They hang out and they got out and have fun and daaanceeee, they have a real knack for cracking Mary’s sour shell and she has such a soft spot for them. Especially around her birthday they all go out a little more and though she’s wildly aware they – and lbr a lot of her friends – are trying to distract her from it to stop her spiralling she never comments.

They’re all borderline kleptos and it’s like a game to them at this point. Mary already has approaching a full silverware set from the Iceberg Lounge. Daring each other to steal more and more brazenly as the night progresses, whatever they can squirrel away in their coats and purses.

It huuuuuurts her to look at them sometimes. She’s told them before. They’re grown adults and they make their own choices but Mary does feel a bit like an older sister in a way, and it gets difficult to know how off the rails and terrible her life is, feeling like she’s not able to step in and stop it happening all over again to people who are such a bright light in her life. Once, drunk and sad and rambling, she did tell them both she’d pay for everything, anything, whatever they wanted to do, if they’d give up crime and Gotham and go somewhere else.
