Modern Top-Down Knitting by Kristina McGowan
This book sports a long subtitle: Sweaters, Dresses, Skirts, & Accessories Inspired by the Techniques of Barbara G. Walker. Walker is famous for a number of knitting publications in the 1970s including treasuries of stitch patterns and a book explaining how and why to knit from the top down. The why includes the ability to try on a garment as it is made to see if it fits and to avoid the too long sleeve or the too long bodice or skirt. By sewing circularly, from the top-down seams are largely eliminated and even set-in sleeves can be picked up and knitted from the top down. I was always struck by how early knitting books sometimes only show garments that must be pieced together even when it hardly seems necessary.
McGowan struck up a correspondence with Walker and then a friendship and wrote her book borrowing techniques but also making up her own, especially using elastic cord and pre-made lace for finishing treatments. The result is a set of modern patterns that many young women will enjoy.
You see here in red the Soho Smocked Dress which uses smocking in order to mark and shape the waistline, the grey Suspension Dress, a lovely evening number, and the Feather Dress in beige with an empire waistline pulled tight to the body with a bit of interior elastic. I have always been puzzled by the making of skirts from the bottom up as it seemed to me to risk both the wrong length and the wrong waist size, so I also appreciated the Chrysler Skirt.
You will be able to find new and used copies of this volume on the web as well as a second one she did.

"Tess was a performance artist and part-time jewelry maker who now worked as a set designer. [...] The first night we spent together, I taught her to knit — my classic seduction technique (High Femme Camp Antics, or HFCA) — and about frisson, that carbonated feeling that accompanies a crush. We stared at each other for a long time, unblinking. Because I knew that this otherwise might take forever (lesbians!), I finally asked Tess point-blank if she felt a frisson for me (HFCA). In response, Tess kissed me hard, with teeth. I knew she wanted to fuck, but I pushed her hands away dramatically when they crept under my skirt (HFCA). I told her that I didn’t typically sleep with people so soon (HFCA), which was true not for any real reason but because I was privately humiliated by my body (HFCA). Instead of letting her fuck me, I scratched Tess’s entire torso with my long, pink fingernails (HFCA). “Her fingernails drifted down my neck, across my shoulders,” Jess Goldberg, the butch narrator of Stone Butch Blues, says of a high femme whose camp antics thrill her. “I’d forgotten the sheer pleasure of a high femme tease.” “Your fingernails are full of frisson,” Tess said as morning light began to stream in through the window above her bed. “I know,” I said. I recently read a collection of funny stories by Lesléa Newman, high-femme chronicler of dyke life in the 1990s (the materialistic, shopping-addicted Golden Age of HFCA). In one story, a butch named Flash arrives to pick Lesléa up and take her out to dinner. Flash politely tells Lesléa that she looks nice. “The average femme would have taken that to be a compliment,” Lesléa dishes. “But this high-maintenance femme hadn’t spent the last two weeks shopping for the perfect outfit and the last seven hours bathing, shaving, bleaching, filing, polishing, combing, brushing, drying, moussing, spritzing, spraying, and applying five pounds of makeup to have all her efforts summed up in one little four-letter word.” Flash’s flimsy compliment doesn’t satisfy Lesléa’s desires to be seen, appreciated, and worshiped, and so Lesléa starts from the bottom and works her way up, prompting Flash to compliment her shoes, her miniskirt, and finally her hair in a grand, shimmering pyramid of HFCA. But even as she performs satiation, Lesléa is insatiable. Her antics fail at getting her precisely what she wants from Flash, because there’s always something unsatisfying about getting what you want by asking for it. Lesléa’s desire glows from within the frame of her HFCA, distilled and exposed and unmet. Can I Come Inside, my high-femme sex game, deals primarily with unmet, outsourced, and circumnavigated desire. In Females (2019), trans lesbian critic Andrea Long Chu argues that femaleness is a universal, existential condition rather than a gender or a sex — a condition of being and of consciousness that involves letting others do our desiring for us. At stake in Can I Come Inside, as well as in HFCA at large, is a femaleness that both craves and rebels against its tendency to outsource desire. In playing Can I Come Inside, I, like Lesléa, ask Tess to do my desiring for me, and Tess in turn defers her desire to me: the game is strictly my desire, one that she insists she does not share. Even though it mandates a performance of aggressive desire from Tess, there’s no doubt that Can I Come Inside is about my desire; it’s my game; I make the rules."
-- An excerpt from "High Femme Camp Antics," an essay written by Jenny Fran Davis. (Emphasis in bold my own.)

Portrait of Vivienne Westwood by Christian Shambenait
It took me a few days, but with the death of icon-goddess-genius Vivienne Westwood, I had to make a post here about her work and how massively influential she was during her lifetime, and why her influence will remain for years to come.
"I take something from the past that has a sort of vitality that has never been exploited – like the crinoline – and get very intense. In the end you do something original because you overlay your own ideas." Vivienne Westwood
Born in 1941 in Tintwistle, Cheshire, Vivienne Westwood (nèe Swire) did not have a "traditional" path into fashion and design, even though she took a course of jewellery at the Harrow Art School (she thought it was not for her, being a working-class girl), she became a primary school teacher and got married with Derek Westwood, had a kid... But she was a maker of things and a creative mind, and made her own wedding dress and jewellery that she sold at a stall.
Tumblr media
Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood at the Let It Rock store (London, January 1972).
But all of that was about to change when she met Malcolm McLaren. She got divorced, moved with him and had another son. McLaren became the manager of the Sex Pistols and with Westwood, they became a creative duo who dressed the band and became VERY influential during th punk era. We must add the after that they opened a store called SEX, which was the meeting place for the punk scene in London in the 1970s. So, yeah. punk wouldn't look like it does without Vivienne Westwood.
Tumblr media
"Vivienne and Malcolm use clothes to shock, irritate and provoke a reaction but also to inspire change. Mohair jumpers, knitted on big needles, so loosely that you can see all the way through them, T-shirts slashed and written on by hand, seams and labels on the outside, showing the construction of the piece; these attitudes are reflected in the music we make. It's OK to not be perfect, to show the workings of your life and your mind in your songs and your clothes." Viv Albertine
This era of Westwood's design has a lot of collaboration, especially with McLaren, and they produced under the Worlds End label until 1985. These collections have each a theme and a name, and here is when we star seeing Vivienne Westwood's eye and curiosity for historical fashion, as well as nods and details especially from the 18th and 19th centuries. Of course, it was the 80s and all was way more colourful than what we thing of more contemporary Vivienne Westwood, but you can see that EVERYTHING was already there in the period which she dubbed as "New Romantic" with collections like Witches, Punkature, and Pirate.

Tumblr media
Ensemble from the 1982 Pirates collection, Victoria & Albert Museum.
Tumblr media
Knitted top from the 1983 Witches collection, featuring Keith Haring's graffiti.
The 1988-1991 era is called "The Pagan Years", and we can see the change of the main looks from punks to girls in clothes that parodied the upper class. And it is then that I think the ultimate Vivienne Westwood is seen: corsets, crinolines, tartan, colourful stripes... Here is when we begin to see the historical references taken to a extreme, mixed with the modern word and sense of humour, while always being perfectly made and patterned and fun for all genders.
Here some of my favourite ones:

I did a lot of sewing in 2023, and spent more time on my sewing projects than on any of my other hobbies, even though I ended up with relatively few finished products. I drafted patterns, fitted mock-ups, and worked with specialty fabrics, several of them new to me. I'm pleased with how all of them came out, and feel like I improved my skills in both sewing and drafting. And most importantly, I had a ton of fun wearing each one of these projects!
The majority of the year was spent on my Rhaenyra Targaryen cosplay, starting last January with drafting a pattern from my measurements, sewing a mock-up, fitting the mock-up to achieve a more screen-accurate look, and adjusting the pattern accordingly. I worked with silk for the very first time, black silk organza for the underdress and red silk jacquard (woven by a small maker in India) for the main dress. I dyed lacing cords to match, hand-sewed several yards of trim, set a couple dozen grommets by hand, sewed on several different types of beads, and did a lot of handsewing to complete the whole thing. I worked on it continuously for just over seven months, in between work and alongside other sewing projects in the last month or so.
The other major sewing project last summer was the sequin shorts for my Harley Quinn/Taylor Swift mashup cosplay. I based them on the sequin shorts in the first Suicide Squad movie, but made them red and black to match both Harley's more typical color scheme and Taylor Swift's Red color scheme. I drafted a pattern by altering a swimsuit pattern I drafted in 2020, and made a lining out of swimsuit fabric to check the fit, then cut out the exterior sequin fabric. I'd worked with sequin fabric before, but never one with sequins attached in one continuous chain of stitches, which took a little while to figure out how to best handle to keep from unraveling when cut. I ended up handsewing extra sequins onto places of the shorts where the sequins had fallen off.
I purchased the Taylor Swift tshirt but added quite a lot of hand-sewn details, to make it look more like the Suicide Squad tshirt. In July and August I also finished a bunch of other small cosplay crafting items, everything from wig styling and jewelry making, to gluing rhinestones to a pair of bunny ears, repairing the beading on a purchased dress, and adding a hidden pocket to a purchased skirt, all in preparation for Dragon Con at the end of August.
After Dragon Con I needed a couple of months to recover, and while I did start (but not yet finish) a simple knitting project, I didn't do any sewing or pattern drafting again until late November. At that point I knew I wanted to make a cozy stay-at-home winter dress and get it finished just as soon as possible, so I could start wearing it as the weather turned colder.
I drafted a new dress pattern based on the pattern I drafted for Rhaenyra's dress, and a pair of funky wide legged pants from a pajama pant pattern I'd drafted in 2022. The whole project, from drafting the pattern and ordering a sample of the heavy fleece fabric I wanted to use, to the final hand stitching on the hem, took just under a month -- much faster than the Rhaenyra project, with much less fussy fabric and far fewer details. Now that I've gotten to wear it around the house over the last week and a half, there are a few small changes I may make to it in the future, but generally I'm very happy with it.
Currently I actually have two other sewing projects in process, too: hand-sewing/quilting the print from an old tshirt onto the back of a hoodie for Jack (slow going but getting close to done), and a surprise birthday gift for a family member. I'll post pictures of each once they're done, but probably won't post about the surprise project until the gift has been given.
After that, I have plans to start making some layering pieces to put over (and under) the fleece dress. I have some scrap fabric from older projects I'd like to turn into wearable things, and that bolt of cotton herringbone fabric I got a good deal on on Ebay arrived the other day, and needs to be washed and ironed and such before I start figuring out what I want to do with it.
I'm hoping to continue my streak of 2023 sewing into 2024, with that focus on more practical, everyday wearable items, rather than on cosplay. I don't know yet if I'm going to have any cosplay events to attend this year, and even if I do, I'd be quite happy bringing older projects, including those I finished in 2023, out to play again. As much as I love making those big show pieces for conventions, and pushing myself with new-to-me fabric types like silk and sequins, I'll get a lot more use out of everyday pieces, and feel better about my day to day wardrobe at the same time.
Thank you to everyone who liked and commented on my sewing posts throughout the year! I mostly post about my projects here as a way to document them for myself, but it's always so wonderful to hear that other people like my work, too. I hope 2024 treats all of us well, and to any of you out there with sewing projects you're working on, may your thread stay untangled and your scissors sharp!

Pulp Diction - Part One Words: Paul Lester, Photographer: Pat Pope Melody Maker, 27 May 1995 Transcription: Acrylic Afternoons
Starring: JARVIS COCKER as THE JUNKSHOP ROMANTIC STEVE MACKEY as THE PLAYBOY RUSSELL SENIOR as THE ALIEN CANDIDA DOYLE as THE CARE BEAR KID NICK BANKS as THE PIE-MUNCHER
From the late Seventies right up to the early Nineties, Sheffield's Pulp were critical faves whose bizarre sex-obsessed space-pop eluded commercial success. Then in 1994, their His 'n' Hers LP sold 100,000 copies, went Top 10 and almost won the Mercury Prize. Meanwhile, frontman Jarvis Cocker became Britain's unlikeliest sex symbol and all-round multi-media pundit. With their fantastic new single 'Common People' released this week, we meet the brilliant Pulp as they prepare to ascend to the next level of fame and acclaim.
PULPINTRO
He's Chris Evans' favourite artist. Greater London Radio has called him "the first pop star of the 21st century". This writer reckons he's Eric Morecambe meets James Bond. And he's described himself as "Woody Alien in platform heels". Ladies and Gentlemen, Jarvis Branson Cocker, the human stick insect in Oxfam gladrags rechristened "Pop's Mr Sex" by The Observer's "Life" magazine, has just entered the building. And tripped over some camera cable.
As stumbles go, it's pretty clumsy. Although Jarvis doesn't exactly tumble arse over tit onto the Maker photographer's studio floor, it's a trip nonetheless, a full-scale fumble of the feet, a semi-somersault. Not that Cocker seems to care. He doesn't bother to check whether the nosy bastard journalist has witnessed his miniature fall from grace, he just regains his balance and heads towards the studio table where several platefuls of sweets and sandwiches await.
The trip is all. In it, we can locate the sublime/corblimey essence of Pulp, the most modern of modern pop bands, fronted by Jarvis Cocker, the ordinary man with the extraordinary talent, the sex god with the sex problems, the klutz-icon whose Cool Quotient is raised precisely because he doesn't mind looking uncool. Thought: Jarvis Cocker has the same initials as Jesus Christ and Jimmy Corkhill.
Fact: on the night of this interview, he is spied in a quiet corner of a Menswear after-show party with a gorgeous young girl, legs akimbo, facing him on his lap, her skirt around her waist, his crotch against hers, the pair, oblivious to the drinking/drugging hordes (basically the entire population of The Good Mixer relocated to London W1), thrusting and grunting like extras from "Confessions Of A Britpop Idol".
Theory: the British public is obsessed with sex, especially public sex, at which Jarvis Cocker is (becoming) an expert. Ergo, the British public is (becoming) obsessed with Jarvis Cocker, who, after 15 years in the shadows, is Going Public with Pulp's synthetically treated, dramatically arranged, indecently graphic pop songs about public - and private and magical and mundane - sex.
PULPSEX (FOREPLAY)
A Pulp feature without sex would be like a Barry White feature without sex or a Spiritualized feature without drugs or a Snoop Doggy Dogg feature without guns or a Shaun Ryder feature without sex and drugs and guns, or a Paul Weller feature without loads of tedious meandering bollocks about old blues and soul records. But a Pulp feature - or, for that matter, a Pulp song - doesn't have to be solely about sex. It's just that, for Pulp, as it is for Jarvis Cocker, as it is (let's be honest) for us, sex is the axis around which all their/his/our other obsessions orbit.
So, yes, a Pulp feature or a Pulp song could be about knitting, just as it could be about fairgrounds or babies or joyriders or pink gloves or lipgloss or underwear. But really, once you've rubbed at the surface and scrubbed away the details of Pulp's beautiful tales of banal lives, you're left with sex, in all its gory glory. I'm not sorry about this. Neither's Jarvis Cocker.
"Is there anything in the world more interesting than sex?" the thinking woman's crumpet with the thick-rimmed spectacles repeats my loaded/"Loaded" question in his inimitably rich, deep South Yorkshire voice. "No, I don't suppose there is. Eating and reproducing are the two major motives that make animals want to do things. And I don't think it's that different with people, except that people have the ability to think about it, and have morals about it. I always thought of sex as something quite transcendental," he continues, leaning forward now. "Not that l'm into tantric sex, or whatever, but in the way that it transcends... In a world where religion isn't such a massive guiding force, sex is, along with drugs, the closest we ever get to a transcendental feeling. Especially the moment of orgasm." Oo-er, Jarvis Cock-er.
Think of the seedy voyeurism of "Babies" (from "His 'n' Hers") where the kid watches his friend's sister going at it hammer-and-tongs through a gap in a wardrobe door; of the tawdry perversions of "Sheffield: Sex City" from "Pulpintro" ("I just had to make love to all the cracks in the pavement and the shop doorways"); or the smutty ambiguity of "Little Girl (With Blue Eyes)" from "Masters Of The Universe" ("There's a hole in your heart / And one between your legs / You've never had to wonder which one he's going to fill"): Pulpsex is never the hygienic coupling you see in films, the seamless, juiceless, sexless, unproblematic sex we're all supposed to have as adults.
Jarvis Cocker is the only white pop artist currently addressing the subject of sex in an explicit manner. Historically, white pop sex has either been good clean fun (The Beatles, The Beach Boys) or its darker side has just been hinted at (The Who, The Rolling Stones) or it has been the course of much angst (New Order, The Smiths).
Today, of course, sex is dealt with in numerous black genres such as rap, house and swingbeat, only there the sex is the mechanically precise variety, all domineering men and submissive women, gleaming musculature and cool biological fusion and fission. Pulpsex is rather more fumbling and fallible than that. It takes place between streets, not between the sheets.
"I like that sort of thing," admits Jarvis. "It's good for sex to be an event, not always taking place in the same venue. It's better to go on tour, as it were. It's more exciting. Not that I'm one of those people who has to think that they're going to be discovered at any moment shagging in an alleyway, or whatever."
"Anyway," he refers back to the bump 'n' grind style of contemporary sensual poetry, "that's where most pop writing about sex falls down. It becomes like a parody of a man trying to portray himself as God's gift to women, as the greatest stud alive."
Could a white man ever get away with a line like Barry White's "Take off your brassiere, my dear"?
"No, they'd get the piss taken out of them, and rightly so."
As Pulp's popularity increases, so too does Jarvis Cocker's ability to reduce female admirers to paroxysms of pleasure at the sight of his beanpole academic frame or the sound of his lugubrious, deadpan, baritone. Thing is, they're half surrendering to Jarvis, the post-modern Englebert Humperdink (he sends them), and half laughing at themselves for doing so (is he sending himself up?). There is a similarly narrow line in Pulp's songs between the silly and the serious. Could Jarv sing a song about sex with a straight face, or does he usually feel the need to be self-deprecating about it?
"Well," he smiles, "there is always that temptation where sex is concerned to hide the IQ, to pretend you didn't really mean what you said, which is a cop-out. You have to risk looking a bit daft."
Jarvis didn't lose his virginity until he was 19, and he was apparently celibate for several years when he moved down to London from Sheffield at the age of 25 to study film at St Martin's College Of Art. For years, his frustrated lust for lust fuelled his muse. Now he's got a live-in lover, Sarah, who may or may not be the saucy girl from the Menswear party and works in a mental health centre. ("I DJ'ed there once," Jarvis tells me. "I played them lots of Madness records".) Although like all of us he's struggling to keep his coitus explosively interesting while in a steady relationship ("I don't think you can have both at once. Do you know what I mean?" Oh, but I do), he is surely having at least more regular, if not more successful, sex. Is there a direct correlation between Jarvis Having Successful Sex and Jarvis No Longer Being Able To Write Successfully About Sex?
"It depends how you measure success at sex," he says. "There isn't a score card in operation, or anything." I dunno, I got a standing ovation from my girlfriend the other night. "I wouldn't say I was having more successful sex now," Jarvis ignores me. "I might be having more sex but I don't know if it's more successful." But if it was? "Then I'd probably stop writing altogether and concentrate on shagging! If it was that good. I mean," expands Jarvis, grandly, "there is a theory that states that people create Art because they're sublimating their sexual desires in some way, or they have certain feelings of dissatisfaction which drive them to achieve certain things. So if you were really satisfied with sex and life in general, you'd probably just give up creating and concentrate on enjoying yourself."
There are few signs of a satisfied Jarvis Cocker on "Common People", Pulp's anthemic, gigantic new single whose relentlessly intense rhythm and motorik pace recall the demonic, supersonic, electronic mo-mo-momentum of Eno-era Roxy Music, and whose juggernaut keyboard riff and vitriolic sex-geek lyric smack of Elvis Costello at his most deliciously malicious (circa "Lipstick Vogue"). The narrator of this staggering piece of synthesised pop invective relates the story of a girl who wants to slum it for a while by moving into a scuzzy neighbourhood, shopping in scummy grocers and sleeping with common people like...
...Jarvis?
"Sex was never really on the cards, to be honest," says the working-class boy from Intake, Sheffield of the real life incident recalled in "Common People", in which a student from a wealthy Greek family who Jarvis met at St Martin's College outlined her plans to take a brief, vicarious holiday in other people's misery, via El Jarvo himself.
"That was just a bit of poetic license. I only knew her for a matter of weeks, and I only spoke to her a few times, but it stuck in my mind what she was saying, that she wanted to sleep with 'common people like me'."
Did she actually use that line?
"Oh no. She never actually said that to me. It was one of the things that I found quite strange when I moved to London," digresses Jarvis, reminiscing about his formative years as a fully paid-up member of the Weird Teen Club, about his days wearing lederhosen and looking like a bit-part from "The Sound Of Music".
"Because when I lived in Sheffield I was always getting flack off football fans, stuff like, 'F***ing poof'. I was always considered a bit effete. Then suddenly I came down here and, because I spoke with this northern accent, I had this air of slight earthliness. I liked that, because I'd never had it before."
"So yeah," Jarvis returns to the inverted snob-protagonist of "Common People", "maybe she did consider me a bit common." Isn't that Pulp in a nutshell: a blend of the earthly and the effete, the coarse and the camp?
"Maybe, I don't know. That's your job to say that." So you were a bit posh up in Sheffield, and you're a bit rough in London? "Yeah, maybe. Yeah."
Does Jarvis, the alienated wunderkind who has been in Pulp for over half his life, feel more comfortable back home or down here?
"I was thinking about that when we played with Oasis at the Sheffield Arena show, actually," he says, fiddling with a loose fingernail. "At the do afterwards there were loads of people from Manchester and I really enjoyed being there, because I've not socialised in the north for a long time. I've found I get on easier with northerners that I do with people that I meet down here."
Can we extrapolate from this that, perusing a list of his peers, Jarvis would be more at ease with, for example, Oasis that he would, say, Blur?
"I've got more in common with Oasis, yeah. When it comes to something like civilised conversation."
Civilised conversation? Oasis?
"Why not? In fact, the first time I ever spoke to them was when we were all in America and we were trying to get into their show in San Francisco. And we got a message saying, 'You can all come in as long as Jarvis comes onto the bus and talks to us.' So I went on and talked. They were really friendly. Unfortunately, I was in a really depressed state - it was my birthday and I was feeling a bit maudlin - and they probably thought I was a right moron."
Jarvis Cocker meets the brothers Gallagher. The mind truly boggles at this summit encounter between such diametrically opposed aesthetic schools of consciousness. I suppose Noel and Liam were busy swapping lurid tales of birds and booze while poor Jarv was left to ruminate on the shabby nature of existence, or something.
Am I right?
"Not really, no," Jarv casually leaps out of his seat to deposit a bit of nail in the studio bin. "The only real difference," he says, plonking himself back down on his swivel chair, "was that they were talking about shagging birds and I was thinking about shagging birds."

Dammit.
There's a sewing pattern maker in Canada that makes a few patterns that I want to sew. Except I can't sew,I don't have time to sew, and trying to do things like lay out fabric to cut patterns are fairly impossible right now.
Still trying to figure out how to block knitting at the moment.
But, this pattern maker also sells the items too. In warm weather fabrics like cotton and linen. For tall women.
They aren't cheap, they are handmade skirts and dresses, but they're not cheap, shitty fast fashion pieces of crap that don't fit and fall apart.
And the yen is strong against the cad right now.
So I may be explaining to my husband that yes, I did order $500 worth of clothes from Canada. And I will have to pay customs on it.
But it will be worth it. Because, quite frankly I want a skirt and a dress that fit!
But fucking hell, trying to convince myself to spend that much is hard. Because I just spent like $200 on yarn earlier this year, and I can't wear these clothes to work out anything.
I honestly really just need to start sewing. That would be cheaper. There's fabric stores in this city, it's a popular hobby in Japan. I think my mother-in-law has a sewing machine too, I've seen it (it's a Brother, but I don't know if it still works. Things are stacked on it).
I need a pocket dimension to get things done.

♦ for anyone?
Hello there! Thanks for asking! :D
Tis the prompt list
♦ - quirks/hobbies headcanon
Alyra: She is a clean freak. Will jump in a river at the first ever occasion, will stop after a battle to clean her weapons because hell no she's not slipping her daggers in the scabbard like that. She was grown Dalish, sure, but she is extremely suspicious of the five seconds rule. If something fell on the ground, why should you eat it. She accepted the idea of shoes better than Aisling for this.
As for her hobby: she took the Bard thing from Leliana in strides. She's more of a spy than an entertainer -she is a nice mezzosoprano-, and she likes to compose... But just drinking songs. Her masterpieces include "What do we do with a drunken Warden" (composed with Zevran that one time they managed to recreate Spritz), "Small pints make Mythal cry" (Mythal can be substitute with the Maker, according to the occasion) and "Those sweet Dalish brews". She also quite likes carving figures and decorations on wood.
Raina: She won't throw away food. Food poisoning because you're eating some stale food is, for her, preferrable to wasting. It's not even a question. All her friends try to stop her, nobody really managed. Also, she can't cope with doing just one thing at once, she'll grow restless and jump on her seat and become annoying if her hands aren't busy doing something else in the meanwhile.
As a hobby, she is a pretty good knitter. Will not gift anything that she didn't knit herself. She has a good eye to guess sizes and measures.
She loves to sing, but she's terrible at it.
Garrett: He doesn't face confrontation if he hasn't a clear mind over it. He's easy-going, even more than Raina, but when he's angry or upset... He will isolate and refuse to even admit he's feeling bad. Will find some solitary corner to think about it and understand exactly what he's feeling and why, and then face the conversation with a clear head. He's just private (and the one that in a Modern AU would willingly enter therapy).
He likes gardening. He was fine in the farm and loved to take care of the plants. Would name you every green thing around, asked Merril to teach him to forage, has tomatoes in the back garden in the mansion.
Aisling: She hates shoes. Can't function with them, hates the hell out of them. She doesn't understand socks either. Why would anyone want to have their feet compressed is beyond her. She will pick stuff fallen on the ground with her toes. Also, when she's nervous she starts to tap her thumb against her fingers in a precise sequence. It was, originally, an exercise the Keeper taught her and Pavyn to guess whether it was the Fade or not, she committed it to memory so much that it just became a way to ground herself and calm down.
Beside experimenting on magic just because and playing Mythbusters with Dorian, and horses, she likes to draw. She's absolutely terrible at it, has no intention of learning some anatomy whatsoever. But she loves it. Her personal letters are filled with doodles. The more doodles you receive, the more she likes you.
And music. She will sing as she works, when she's happy. She's a decent singer, but won't sing if she's the only one to do it. She loves to dance, and it's pretty good at it.
Radha: She doesn't like to speak much. She's not non-verbal, but she just enjoys listening more. Every single word she says is deeply thought of and meant. Between all the characters, she's the one who'll like the Game the least: saying one thing to mean another for her is just... A waste of words. If she tells you she likes you, it's because she does. It makes her come off as aloof and haughty when she really isn't so, and makes her seem unfriendly. She doesn't wear skirts, doesn't like skirts, she finds them extremely uncomfortable on herself, and also hair. She struggles a lot with her hair, it's curly and she doesn't like how long it takes to take properly care of it. She chopped it all off once and never got back from sporting longer hair on top of her head (it doesn't reach her ears), and an undercut on the sides.
She loves to read. She will read anything and everything. She has a preference for non-fiction and history in particular, and the thing that she really adores about Skyhold is the library. The most books that reaches the Keep are on her request. She will also read people, but if you have a good enough set of historical anecdotes to tell she will like you.
She won't sing to save her life, but is a decent dancer when she puts her mind to it (she's extremely picky in her choice of partners, usually it was Aisling dragging her to dance, or close friends). Before injuring her hands, she was more than a decent lute player.

detachment, november snow, and the sacred heart
"Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!" Psalm 27:14
Surrender is hard.
Though the concept seems longstanding throughout hymns of old and even in contemporary worship songs, it's much easier to lift your hands and sing about it on cry night than to consciously live it out. It's one thing to vehemently insist to a struggling other that the Lord is sovereign and will deliver on His promises, and entirely another to hold that reality in the hollow of your own heart and wait. To wait and hope is perhaps the greatest act of rebellion against the modern world that's hooked on instant gratification without the labors of patience. Yet even though we are only pilgrims, travelers passing through the world, we cannot help but be tainted by a disordered want for immediate results. God bids us wait, and we roll our eyes like moody children.
Sometimes God does not bid us wait for long. Advent is coming in a matter of weeks. Fall touched the Palouse for a brief moment and then hurried along, not to return again. It has already started to snow. Many a time I've awoken to a field of white and wondered how it wasn't Christmas morning already. It's hard to remain in the moment and not leap ahead to caroling and setting out a manger for the infant Christ when you long to celebrate so badly.
Other dreams take longer to realize. Since growing up, I've nurtured great wishes, wishes that ring so clearly I can picture them with perfect clarity. In the recesses of my heart there stands a little house in the country, full of warmth and laughter and home-cooked goodness. There is a peach tree and vegetable garden, a brood of chickens and a milk goat bleating softly in the daybreak. I picture a husband I could call my own, who would let me care for him in any way I could and be my company sitting at the feet of Jesus, and a noisy crowd of littles to tug on my skirts and clamor for a bedtime story, their hands and feet muddy from the day's romps.
I long for adventure. Not the costly sort that comes with a sacrifice of what truly matters, but the sort that you can pack into a trailer and tow along a lonely highway through America's national parks, where the mountains and the canyons sing the glory of their Maker and time seems have stopped moving hundreds of years ago. I want to share my heart with a family, and know that despite my many flaws and shortcomings, I can be deeply known and deeply loved.
Every day I dream! And every day I am left unsatisfied. Time and again I return to my bed with empty hands, and the shoebox I call my home seems smaller than it was the morning I left it. Is there any hope? Are we poor souls doomed to wander the land in torment of unfulfillment until the day we depart to meet our Creator?
Not so! For hundreds of years before God knit me together, the Carmelites had put into practice an ingenious solution to quell the fires of longing - detachment.
When implemented, detachment is meant to strip away any loyalties we may have that keep us from total intimate union with God. It is a slow, but steady process of surrendering our innermost dreams with the recognition that they are not our own - we are God's, and all that we have belongs to God, even the ambitions of our heart. It is a meek admission of our own humanity, and a lifting up the most tender pieces of our soul to God with the acknowledgment that His ways are infinitely higher than ours, and that the dreams and desires we nurture so could never come to pass.
Detachment is painful. In the moment, it can seem cruel and unfair. Why dream at all if you cannot lay claim to it? What use is it to build plans if they turn out to be contrary to the will of God? Though it may seem revolutionary in a world where people stake their identity in their earthly loves or accomplishments, it's only a humble response to the call of ages - "deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Me".
In the offering of our very selves to the Lord, we focus our minds on the things above, those eternal treasures that will never be taken from us. The more one meditates upon the Lord and all His works, the more one cannot help but be drawn to His immense sacrifice for the sake of poor sinners - us, who were all once wandering lost, with our hope set upon that which is temporary and perishable. And once you had put to death all attachments to creatures, once you had released every inordinate desire into God's capable hands - then and only then would you find true contentment and rest in the Heart of the Lord. God is enough, He is ever-sufficient, as St Catherine of Siena tells us:
"O Deity eternal, O high, eternal Deity, O sovereign, eternal Father, O ever-burning fire! What do Your bounty and Your grandeur show? The gift You have given to man. And what gift have You given? Your whole self, O eternal Trinity."
Though it can be so, so hard to see in the moment...it is Christ who is our gift above all other gifts. In the shedding of His blood, He has reconciled us to the Father and brought us out of the lonely desert to enjoy the fruits of His sacrifice. Every day, He is present at the altar, under the modest appearance of bread and wine. When we encounter Him in communion, we are given a chance to hide ourselves in the wounds of His Most Sacred Heart and know that no matter what may come to pass in this life, we can always count on the One who died for us to carry us through.
Truth be told, I'm terrible at remembering this. Too often I forgo my greatest Treasure in favor of longing for some future blessing. But I want to get better. I want my life to be a continual drawing towards the Lord, to embrace the state in life I've been given without impatience or complaint.
Surrender is hard. But it's the easiest path we have this side of Heaven.
