neocities website update 8/12/23

This update is massive and game changing to me, but likely subtle to everyone else! So I'm gonna try my best to explain what's new in a way that's interesting. For one, the navigation bar has been changed!

(what it looked like before is on top, and what it looks like now is below)

There's one Obvious change, but before that, lemme go over the less immediately obvious ones. The bottom edge is accented with a rainbow now (snazzy), and when you hover over the buttons, they change color accordingly

So then the noticeable change: the social media icons are gone... because they've been moved to the bottom of the page!

I just think they look nicer here. I want them to be easily accessible for people who are interested in finding me elsewhere, but also not too "in your face" that my site feels like a detour. I feel like this strikes the right balance!

And on the note of things at the bottom of the page, on the left there you can see a Kodocha button that wasn't there before. I made a little tribute page to it! It's one of my favorite pieces of fiction, and I've spent a lot of energy and time thinking about it recently. I'd like to write a blogpost about it eventually too, but this is what I've got for now.

So anyways, another thing to mention! I've changed how the pages look when you're looking at art pieces:

(I'm using this art piece as an example because it has a short description and is therefore easy to screenshot. the changes are true for every art piece's page!)

You might notice some superfluous changes (in a sort of "spot the difference" way), but the update was more to make the back-end. making it easier to work with, more consistent visually, but most importantly.... more friendly to small screens! The examples above are showing how it'd look on a fairly large screen, meanwhile on a smaller screen, the intent is to have it condense for readability... but there were some issues.

Here's how these pages would look on a smaller screen before the update:

Most of these problems were thanks to me not having as much html know-how when I made the infrastructure. Which y'know.. shows it was time for me to update them, lol. So here's how it appears now after the update!

Phew! Now that this is done, hopefully I can start working on new things.

And speaking of new things, the about page is down right now so I can revamp it. It's almost done already, so it shouldn't be long. I have a uniquely hard time talking about myself, so that's been the biggest hurdle admittedly.

5. The 13th avatar from February 2017

The lowest on the top 5 list, and also unsurprisingly the oldest. This was the second avatar I made where I got to showcase both of my tattoos. Both of them have significant meaning to me, the moon symbolizing my name’s meaning and the roses symbolizing my close relationship with my mother (she has a matching one, slighter up the arm though as she was afraid that it would hurt too much to have it done on the thin skin of the wrist ;P) This was also the second time I used Esmeralda’s hair to show off my own curls.

4. The 15th avatar from October 2017

A “made spontaneously” avatar, which was originally just made for a collab I did with @myhollie1911​. Or something like that... I actually don’t remember what this was made for anymore, only that it was NOT made with the intention of a new avatar. That kinda just happened after I realized how much I liked it. Both this and number 5 on the list has Holli Would’s body in them since I, back then, loved this black dress I had with some see-through material on the arms and chest. You can clearly see the quality shift between these two x’D

3. The 18th avatar from September 2018

Yeah, it’s no surprise as we get higher on the list, the more recent the avatar is. I really love this one, especially since I got to use one of my favorite animes as reference for the hair. Sana from Kodocha is an ICON and it’s the only long anime I’ve ever watched with it being 102 episodes. The outfit is from another of my most rewatched animes as well called B gata H kei, which roughyl means “B-cupped slut”. It’s... a funny anime, I swear x’D

2. The 14th avatar from September 2017

The spot for 2nd and 1st place was REALLY TOUGH. Cause this avatar has HAUNTED ME ever since I made it... it quickly became the “I’m never gonna be able to top this” avatar, and I was dissatisfied with most of my avatars following it. Not that I ever considered them BAD, I just never loved them as much as I loved this one. And it’s not hard to see why, it checks the whole list; Sign language reference? Check. Both of my tattoos? Check. Esmeralda’s curly hair with my hair colors in it? Check. Outfit from one of my favorite cartoon shows? Check. All of the avatars which followed this one just didn’t shine as bright to me as this one did... Until our number 1 pick.

1. The 19th avatar from January 2020

This one... finally checked off MORE than my number 2 pick; Not only did I finally include my glasses... I changed Belle’s face to be more plump, I chose the plus size model who showed off one of my actual favorite tops in real life AND I drew the hair myself along with the necklace my mother gave me for Christmas 2019. THIS finally had everything hence why it became my top pick.

Do u have any comic advice for ppl who have trouble visualizing/mapping out panels? Layout is always the hardest part of making them for me :')

I’m still pretty new to making comics, so I’m not really sure I’m qualified to give super good advice or anything- but I struggle with this too. You really have to think about what purpose you want each scene to serve/show. If you can cut out a shot that you feel is unnecessary, it gives you more time to add detail to the important shots. You also have to think about what mood or atmosphere you want each panel to show. Honestly though, don’t worry too much about having a super fancy layout- usually, I draw first and then put the box around it later- because sometimes you can push yourself into a corner by drawing the panel first and it becomes restricting.

Tips on making a visual novel?

Just have fun with it, really. Don’t be afraid to look up youtube tutorials. Don't be afraid to make shitty-sounding music, don’t be afraid to make your own backgrounds and sprites, even if you think they’ll look bad. Making a visual novel was super fun and gratifying to me- even if just a few of your friends end up playing it. I’ve only made (1) visual novel as of now, but I definitely want to continue making them in the future. I don’t really have any other tips besides that, sorry if it wasn’t very helpful ;v;

whats your inspiration (artists, shows, etc)

I recently realized my art is inspired a lot by the original fruits basket anime. I love the art style of the old show and I used to watch it nonstop when I was 8, 9, 10 years old. It had a huge impact on me and my art I think. Other shows that inspire me are sangatsu no lion, sailor moon, cardcaptor sakura, & kodocha. I’m also inspired HUGELY by @insertdisc5 , Heinz Edelmann, @mmcoconut , @kallenart , the kagepro music vids for imagination forest, otsukimi recital, and kisaragi attention, and @kaijugunk + @lasanha-do-lidl ( pls check them out!!)

How do you choose your colors because I am literally shook, your art looks amazing. (first of all aaa tysm ;;)

My basic rule of thumb when using a color wheel is when you want to shade something, don’t be scared to SATURATE the FUCK out of it, and always (with some exceptions) choose your shade color by going left on the color wheel.

Hey wow, 1- I am ALSO Bee, 2- I noticed your icon is Sana and I have never met anyone who knew what Kodomo No Omocha even is and it's been my first love since I was a kid, and 3- I'm also so happy that Fruits Basket is back that I won't shut up about it. Just some things I've noticed since I stumbled on your post in the Fruits Basket tag that began with "Hi I'm Bee" and I had to stare at it for several seconds thinking, "Shit did I write that?"

Hi,  Also Bee !!! What a cool coincidence! Especially considering I’ve only adopted the nickname fairly recently hahaha. And yes !!! I needed a change and a friend recommended Sana for an icon a while back and that image just ... spoke to me. I haven’t watched Kodocha in years and tragically never read it but I really liked it when I was a kid !!! And Sana really has an energy that I relate to on soooo many levels hahaha. 

BUT omg that same name thing happens to me sometimes especially when I see peoples tags as ‘hannah talks’ or something like that because I’m like, “fuck when the heck did I write that” lmaooo

Ooooooo!! My all-time fave is Mio Yamanobe since he literally means the world to me but I'll talk about charas that arent on my cc list. Recently I watched kodocha and I absolutely adore Sana. I love her personality and I see a lot of myself in her!!!! Also Ryuji Korekuni from B-Project!! Who is in my icon and header!!! I love him a lot. And Riamu Yumemi from Im@s!!! She became my fave in that game as soon as I saw her. I'm literally in love with her shes my wife. I have a lot more characters I love but these are just the ones that came to mind!!!
