“Asteroid in Love” Anime Review, Winter 2020
Tumblr media
Originally based on a manga by Quro, Asteroid in Love, or Koisuru Asteroid, is a cute little show about a group of girls in an after-school club focused on Earth Science and astronomy. Honestly, watching girls get excited about going to a Gem and Mineral Show really warms my heart, and as far as the genre of cute girls doing cute things goes, this one is rather unique. The aspect of the characters being passionate about space and minerals is more than we usually see in an anime focused on a cast of highschool girls, and in all seriousness, it does a great jod of showcasing the ability of girls to enthusiastically discuss science, even delving into the possibility of science as a career. In reality, science is often a subject that girls tend to avoid, mainly because of the negative stereotypes and the attitudes of men in these same fields. So watching this anime through this kind of lens is rather refreshing.
I am reviewing this based on 5 episodes (mild spoilers), and it has pulled me in. I am notorious for having a soft spot for simplistic slice-of-life anime -- the kinds that depend on the cute personalities of the characters, and many, many still-shots (animation, where?). Asteroid in Love also throws in mild yuri connotations, which still end up cute rather than being thrown in your face. If that’s your thing, I would really recommend this show. It’s highly inoffensive, and the only problematic situations that I’ve come across so far are brief mentions of dressing the girls in “sexy bunny” costumes, one character “shipping” her best friend with another girl, and then the beach episode that is of course, expected. In all honesty, compared to some of the anime I’ve seen that feature cute highschool anime girls enjoying an innocent passion, this one is relatively tame and sweet.
The characters themselves are charming, but still fall into typical CGDCT character archetypes. The protagonist, Mira, reminds me of Yui from K-On!, as she’s kind of air-headed and “happy-go-lucky”, though she has a much more obvious goal in mind -- finding an asteroid and naming it after her childhood crush, Ao. It turns out that when Mira met Ao as a child, on some sort of camping trip, she thought that Ao was a boy, and since then, has harboured warm feelings of one day watching the stars with him again, and hopefully by showing him his eponymous asteroid. But of course, within the first episode, Mira finds out that Ao was a girl all this time, and it so happens that they go to the same school, and have joined the same club! Mira’s romantic interest seems to fade, but she is still obstinate in her goal. She kind of feels an obligation to her then-crush and now-friend, and wants to fulfill her childhood promise.  As for Ao, we haven’t seen too much of what she thinks or feels about Mira, but it is shown that she has had similar warm feelings, and Mira’s promise was definitely memorable to her. And rather than thinking the other was a boy, Ao had always known that Mira was a girl. This kind of brings up the idea of Ao either seeing Mira as a friend and having some sort of friend-crush and wanting to be closer, or maybe she has had a serious romantic crush on Mira since she was little. This definitely nods at a possible yuri storyline, but as most CGDCT anime go, we might see this completely ignored. I haven’t read the manga, but I’d be interested how the author goes about this, and if she really dives into the romance or not. As Asteroid in Love is now being simuldubbed on Funimation (due to the replacement of Interspecies Review, R.I.P.), we might end up seeing a future English release of the manga. Fingers crossed.
The anime also briefly introduces the other characters in the club, and so far we’ve had a cute one-on-one date with Mira and her senpai, Mikage, who is the president of their club. Mikage is having trouble with what she wants to do in the future. She loves and enjoys rocks and gems, and she simply doesn’t know how to turn that happiness into a career, and I found that extremely relatable. Mikage kind of talks to Mira, feeling like Mira herself has an ultimate goal, but Mira explains that her path to her very specific goal is a mystery, and what she wants to do afterward is also unplanned. Through this conversation between kouhai and senpai, we kind of get to see into how the characters think. And it really opens the discussion for what each of these characters choose to do, and what sorts of Earth Science related careers they explore in the show itself.
Again, while it isn’t revolutionary, it does play a with the idea of “compulsory femininity”, as well as the stereotypes that society often places on women who enjoy or excel at science. We see many girls drop their interest in subjects such as math and science, mainly because of bullying or peer-pressure. According to data gathered by UNESCO Institute for Statistics, “less than 30% of the world’s researchers are women”, which shows an international issue with gender performance and expectation. Based on these facts, Asteroid in Love is shining a light on a gender gap that exists in all societies, and these are the tiny steps that we need to close it. Girls need to know that their passions and interests aren’t silly or stupid. Liking gems and minerals and chemistry of the world does not make you unnatractive or “nerdy”, and there are career paths out there where you will find success.
Just my two cents about Asteroid in Love. Definitely check it out if any of this interests you. It’s a cute show that has some interesting themes that can be applied to our real lives. I’m really enjoying it! This is only my first official review on this blog, but look forward to more.

All this time Ao was suffering due to knowing that she won’t be able to achieve her dream and discover asteroid together with Mira, or even more importantly, that she won’t be able to see Mira ever again, but when everything seemed to fail, Misa-nee came to the rescue with the idea of Mira and Ao living together!
MISA-NEE, YOU JUST SAVED THEM BOTH, WHILE IN THE SAME TIME TRIGGERING THE MOST POPULAR SHIPPING TROPE EVER CREATED!
WE LOVE YOU, MISA-NEE!
