Dramas 2023
Just some of my thoughts for some of the dramas of 2023...
-KING THE LAND !!!!! The natural chemistry between the main leads is just so so soooo real that it makes it hard to believe that they're "just friends" in reality; However, at the same time it makes sense, as both Junho and Yoona have been in the entertainment industry and have known each other for a long time (2pm and SNSD go wayyyy back, IYKYK). I'm kind of surprised it took them this long to meet for a drama project, but as a fan of both 2pm and SNSD, I'm so glad to see them both working together again. There are so many funny moments in this drama and the added sound effects and acting make some of the scenes so funny. I also like the easter eggs added in the drama haha. Definitely a feel-good drama. I ship the main leads..!! They already know each other so well and they're also starting to look the same haha. -See You in My 19th Life This series is based on the webtoon, and the drama was surprisingly not bad. Ahn Bo Hyun and Shin Hye Sun both are great together, and I feel like recently Shin Hye Sun has been typecasted into these somewhat typical bold, fearless characters that are also seemingly reflective of her own personality but in this drama I was able to kind of see somewhat of a different side to her (hard to explain hahah). And Ahn Bo Hyun...he's very versatile as an actor. And finding out that he's now dating Jisoo of BP...super unexpected haha !! The drama itself is somehow comforting with all the characters meshing well together. Pleasant~~
-Celebrity Hmmmmm this one was great but something about the female lead I can't put my finger on.. While I do feel like her acting has improved over the years and I see that in some scenes of this drama as well, there were parts where it just seemed flat but I'm not sure if it's just how her character was written. The storyline itself was definitely interesting nonetheless, and I didn't have much expectations going into it, but it does touch upon the effects of social media in modern times and I liked the mystery/thriller type of vibe.
-D.P. Star-studded cast; haven't watched this yet but excited to pick up where they left off for season 1.
-The Real Has Come The cast is talented and there are strong characters in this drama and lots of twists and funny moments. It's light and funny, but there's 50 episodes so there are definitely times where it's a bit draggy but also that's typical of any family dramas. -Oasis Jang Dong Yoon!!! Hahaha I think the cast did a great job with their portrayals though I feel like Jang Dong Yoon just has such a baby-face and looks like he wouldn't hurt a fly but he looked so cool playing this role as Lee Doo Hak. I liked the old-fashioned style of this drama as it took place in the 80s-90s Korea, so it was really refreshing to see the type of fashion, dialects and overall atmosphere during that time through this drama, and think about how much has changed. There were parts of the drama that felt a little repetitive, but I think overall the cast made up for it. -Apple of My Eye (금이야, 옥이야) Typical family drama, a little predictable but expected haha.

Boys Over Flowers
Tumblr media
No one ever forgets their first. For me, "Boys Over Flowers" was the first K-Drama I had ever watched.
I still don't know how I ended up watching this, but I know that I was surfing through Netflix in 2017 when I stumbled upon it. And man, what a ride it was.
As someone who grew up watching Bollywood movies with subtitles, watching a show where they spoke Korean was no big deal. I was able to follow along well enough.
According to Wikipedia, the show first aired in 2009, and it definitely shows. Many aspects of the show would not go over too well in current times. The whole bullying thing, the so called friend side story, Dan-di's parents just leaving her to fend for herself.... so many things to nitpick about. However, I guess for the time it came out, it didn't matter.
Despite all that, if you can accept the not really acceptable right now parts, the show itself is a gateway to K-dramas. It is the quintessential Korean Drama with all its typical troupe archetypes.
First, you have the rich and elite group of boys who rule the school. Everyone wants to be them and in their orbit, despite their not so kind reputations. Then you have the poor girl who doesn't put up with any of their crap, thus capturing the attention of the group's leader. It's a tale as old as time.
Not going to lie. Gu Jun-pyo is a walking red flag, and the way he weedles his way into Geym Jan-di's life should not be emulated at all. I will give the credit to the guy for slowly growing up and maturing, but still. The things done and said, holy Jesus.
Another thing this drama introduced me to was Second Lead Syndrome, or better refered to as SLS. Second Lead Syndrome (SLS) is when the second Lead male or female character is a better match for the leading male or female character. This show definitely had that in spades.
I still have no idea why Jan-di didn't just get with Yoon Ji-hu who was her support whenever anything got too much in her relationship with Jun-pyo and with other things going on in her life. Their relationship was based on trust and comfort, progressing as natural as breathing.
While I didn't particularly feel much disappointed in the ending, since Jun-pyo matured as the series progressed, I still kind of wished Ji-hu was the one that got together with Jan-di.
Overall, while the show wasn't perfect, it was still a decent enough watch once you get over the outdated parts. The filming aesthetic will bring late 2000s nostalgia on like whoa, and the characters grow on you, once you remember that these characters are still just high school students trying to discover themselves and learn through life's ups and downs.
Keeping that all in mind, my rating for this drama is a B. 😊
BOYS OVER FLOWERS

Inspector Koo (2021)
Tumblr media
I didn't know what to expect from this show. It's kind of a quirky remix of Killing Eve crossed with a video game. But after a few minutes of watching Lee Young-ae on screen I was completely sold.
What Worked
This show is hard to explain, visually. The title credits look like some kind of anime tribute. They like to throw in weird flashbacks that aren't flashbacks, characters talking to each other in some kind of liminal space that doesn't exist, and cuts to cheap (though not necessarily bad) video game effects. This makes the show feel like a live action adaptation for a comic book that did not, in fact, exist (though I would totally read it if it did). As a way to keep the show fresh and interesting (while keeping the budget low), I'd say it mostly works, but YMMV.
What Didn't Work
The last 4 episodes kind of felt flat. It was mostly a writing problem (and maybe a budget problem). They had a chaotic energy running through the show that ended up being abandoned in favor of the more standard K-drama ending where everything gets put back in order and justice (of a sort) prevails. I don't think it completely ruined the drama, but they should definitely have let the chaos run for a few more episodes before trying to setup the ending.
Also (*spoiler*) the "battle of wits" in the last episode was just not interesting. What makes Inspector Koo great as a character is that she manages to use chaos to her advantage. She's not a Holmesian detective, they shouldn't try and put her into that role.
The Performances
Tumblr media
Lee Young-ae as Inspector Koo. This actress is a legend in K-film and I had no idea who she was going into the show, but her performance in this was still magnetic. Throughout the show she's a complete wreck—she quit the police, and spends her days and nights playing video games (a pretty cool looking MMO) and drinking herself into a stupor. Basically, she's a total trash goblin and I love her for it!
She ends up in a better place at the end of the show, but manages to still have this chaotic goblin energy that is great. 10/10 no notes. We need more trash goblin detectives on television!
Kim Hye-jun as K. / Song Yi-kyun. She did a great job taking on (roughly) the same role as Jodie Comer in Killing Eve, but with her own spin. Everything up to episode 7 or so (the big election announcement episode) was great. Then the writers kind of didn't know how to resolve her arc. Her character needed to change in some fashion, IMO, and I'm not sure if they really did that. Still a great performance overall.
Kim Hae-sook as Yong Sook (Director Yong). She did a pretty good job as the "true villain" of the show, in a sense, and a big departure from her role in Hospital Playlist. I think the writers decided to play it a little safe with her character in the last few episodes, they could have made her more of an equal of the two leads and upped the stakes, but overall it was still a good performance.
Kwak Sun-young as Na Ja-hee. This was a slight disappointment compared to other roles I've seen her in. When the writers gave her good stuff to work with, she did well, but there were other times when they made her a bit bland and I think her performance got lost a bit. If you want to see her in a much better role, just watch the first season of Hospital Playlist.
Bae Hae-sun as Jung-yeon (K.'s Aunt). She started out as kind of a sleeper character, but as the writers made her more interesting, Bae Hae-sun started to wake up and by the end of her time on the show, you really felt for her. I've seen her in maybe a half dozen other shows, but this was the first one that was really memorable for me, for whatever reason.
Baek Sung-chul as Santa / Han Kwang-wook. I wouldn't say this was a complete standout performance, but I still really enjoyed watching him. Again, I think the writers were a little lazy with the character in a few places, but still a good performance and an interesting side character.
Everyone else. Most of the side characters / villains were fun to watch. I liked the guy that played K.'s sidekick (Lee Hong-nae) and Director Yong's family and lackeys had a number of good character actors. The guy who played the annoying rival team lead did an especially good job at being hateable without being evil. The other "trash" characters that were victims / potential victims of K. were also pretty good.
TL; DR:
I had alot of fun with the show. The title character is especially fun to watch, but there were alot of interesting characters and performances. I felt a bit of a let down in the final stretch of shows, but it was never bad, just not as fun / chaotic as the first eight episodes. Just one of those shows that peaks in the middle of the run, and that's okay.

KDramas I Could Not Finish
KDramas I Could Not Finish
This is not a pleasant post. These are the kdramas I was looking forward to but couldn’t finish. Angel Eyes I had high hopes for this show. I loved Koo Hye Sun in Boys Over Flowers and was upset about the rumors of her ugly divorce and I wanted to support her. This show was not it. There was zero chemistry between her and Lee Sang Yoon’s character. It started off really strong with Kang Ha Neul…
