Reunited with my sweet, fearless friend, Kris at @koa.wild.lux. Kris, you are such a warm and loving person, wise and youthful, disciplined and wildly creative. Your space is so beautiful and has come such a long way since I visited for the first time years ago. Thank you for making me feel pretty and safe and for spending so much time, effort, and toner on me. ♡♡♡ . . . . . . #koreanadoptee #koreangirl #kad #meltyombre #balayage #balayombre? https://www.instagram.com/p/B9D-gxoBWzb/?igshid=kwzt0k6vtdha

Refugee reflection
Exactly 36 years ago today, I immigrated to the United States. So the news I read this morning about President Trump signing an executive order that appears to bar immigration from Muslim countries is hitting particularly hard. The act itself is inhumane—and its parallels to historical prejudiced laws that blocked Asians from immigrating in the late19th century has me thinking. Fuming is more precise. Terrified to be honest.
Today is the anniversary of when I met my parents and brother for the first time. I was seven months old, the plane I rode from Seoul landed in Seattle where my connecting flight took me to Kansas City, Missouri. When I think about what would have happened if upon my arrival to the US, I was detained at the airport, my heart breaks for all the refugees who were airborne when Trump signed the executive order last night.
Where were those people headed before Trump aborted their journeys? Are they holding on to hope, or has it slipped away from them? Can they hear the protesters who showed up to the airport in support? Do they know that millions of Americans wish they could apologize for the ignorance and stupidity of President Trump?
I don’t foresee Trump’s attacks on humanity ending anytime soon. Maybe the problem is that he can’t see himself in others. What kind of fucked up paradox would that be? To save ourselves from Trump we have to be one with the Trump? Barf.

When the protests started at the end of May I, like many people wanted to do something. I wanted justice and pulling up just wasn’t enough. Looking to communities where I intersect I found little to no action outside of zoom calls to talk or worse no conversation at all. Feeling frustrated that those in my demographic were not taking direct action I reached out to some Korean Adoptee friends. We formed a collective called Yeondae (연대) to educate each other and learn how best to mobilize as allies and advocates. . . As Korean American adoptees (KADs) we are in a unique situation, our proximity to whiteness has granted us power and privilege. We feel that it is our responsibility to use this access to combat white supremacy and anti-black racism. . . One of our organizers' daughters has been out protesting with RCJ and is now part of the Portland Black Youth Movement (PBYM). Formerly known as the “rosebuds,” PBYM is a Gen Z group of teen activist leaders, who split from the RCJ activist group. These brave teens have been a critical part of the Portland protest movement, as rally speakers, march call and response leaders, and overall organizers. . . We have been communicating with the leaders of (PBYM) and want to use collective donation to help mobilize our broader KAD community, to support the next generation of Black leaders, to raise awareness about Korean adoptees, and to amplify our voices here in Portland. . . Your donation will support two groups: Black Portlanders and Korean Adoptees. 100% of the donations received will go to the (PBYM). As the fundraising body our collective will gain recognition and help us with our social justice activism around BLM, immigration, and Adoptee rights. You can send money directly to the treasurer, Beth Haworth-Kaufka whose daughter is part of (PBYM) and is coordinating with their leadership: . . Venmo (@Beth-Haworth-Kaufka) Cashapp ($pdxbhk) PayPal (paypal.me/bethhk . . Beth will track all incoming money in a budget sheet, which will be made available for all Yeondae members to review for transparency. Link to the donation page is in my bio. #koreanadoptees #koreans4blacklives #asians4blacklives #portlandoregon #portland https://www.instagram.com/p/CCdUkf5jDXz/?igshid=1nnutmnpr4f50

44 years ago... I left Korea🇰🇷, my native country and was born to my belgian life🇧🇪 . The balance of Identity remains a daily quest I walk with growing pride for my korean roots... . Adoption is a topic that NEEDS to be addressed with more attentive care and humanity and never ending compassion and empathy for those children who leave a life filled with memories, conscious or not, of a past, ancestry, biology and family that will for ever be PART of them... . It is a Reality that needs to become an Awareness, unavoidable to discuss and accept before adopting and become pure consciousness for all... . Thx to All for sharing this Journeya with me.. . Happy Bday little Youm🎂 . #designbyyoum #adoption #adoptee #koreanadoptee #childhoodpicture #photography https://www.instagram.com/p/BoC1sKsnV2_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1w9wo2hih320x

My baby puppy has been struggling lately. I have not written about it at length on social media, and I am not ready to do it here and now. I just want to celebrate how much I love this dog and how much he loves me, even when I do not deserve it. The abbreviated update is that Kennedy was recently diagnosed with #golpp, or #geriatriconsetlaryngealparalysispolyneuropathy (what a mouthful!) and will be starting his physical therapy journey with @healingartsvet in earnest this October. In the meanwhile, we will be focusing on his worsening anxiety and possibly encroaching #ccd, or #caninecognitivedysfunction. I treasure each moment where he is peaceful, lucid, and anxiety-free as a gift. All the other moments are out to break my heart, but I still would not trade away a single moment spent with him. Please think sweet, calm, serene thoughts for my #babypuppy, and if I seem sluggish or down, know that I am just grieving and care for you greatly even when I am quiet. ♡♡♡ . . . . . .
