«Zehaal-E-Miskeen | Amir Khusro
–This poem is written by Amir Khusro in Persian and Brij Bhasha. Brij Bhasha is a Dehaati Zabaan (country tongue) and a dialect of Hindi. In the first verse, the first line is in Persian, the second in Brij Bhasha, the third in Persian again, and the fourth in Brij Bhasha.
Tumblr media
Zehaal-e-miskeen makun taghaful, Duraye naina banaye batiyan.
Do not overlook my misery, by blandishing your eyes and weaving tales,
Ke taab-e-hijran nadaram ay jaan, Na leho kahe lagaye chatiyan.
My patience has over-brimmed, O sweetheart! why do you not take me to your bosom.
Shaban-e-hijran daraz chun zulf, Wa roz-e-waslat cho umer kotah.
Long like curls in the night of separation short like life on the day of our union.
Sakhi piya ko jo main na dekhun, To kaise kaTun andheri ratiyan.
My dear, how will I pass the dark dungeon night without your face before.
Yakayak az dil do chashm-e-jadu, Basad farebam baburd taskin.
Suddenly, using a thousand tricks the enchanting eyes robbed me of my tranquil mind.
Kisay pari hai jo ja sunave, Piyare pi ko hamari batiyan,
Who would care to go and report this matter to my darling.
Cho shama sozan cho zaraa hairan, Hamesha giryan be ishq an meh.
Tossed and bewildered, like a flickering candle, I roam about in the fire of love.
Na nind naina na ang chaina, Na aap aaven na bhejen patiyan,
Sleepless eyes, restless body, neither comes she, nor any message.
Bahaq-e-roz-e-visaal-e-dilbar, Ke daad mara gharib Khusro.
In honour of the day I meet my beloved who has lured me so long, O Khusro!
Sapet man ke varaye rakhun, Jo jaye pauN piya ke khatiyan.
I shall keep my heart suppressed if ever I get a chance to get to her trick.

"Shadow Lord" review
Tumblr media
Novel from 1985, by Laurence Yep. This is hardly a Star Trek novel. I mean, Spock and Sulu are there, sure, but it's mostly a fantasy adventure about a prince fighting against a throne usurper. With a couple of Enterprise characters thrown in the middle to justify the franchise name.
Anyway, if you forget it's supposed to be a TOS novel, the story is entertaining in the same way that an adventure film is. There's plenty of action, balanced with some quiet scenes to establish the characters; there's a villain and a noble man turned traitor; there's a badass lady quite able to fight her own battles; and there are catacombs with giant beetles. It's fun and it's well-written, but don't expect anything too serious. Nonetheless, a bit of the Star Trek philosophy appears in the central theme of "development and progress against stagnation", and in Spock's symbolism as the outsider, who lives in the frontier between two worlds. There's also a small exploration of Sulu's character, and his feelings of being rootless and not belonging to any place, as well as his idealization of the past.
By the way, I have no idea who's supposed to be that guy in the cover. He should be the prince, but in the novel he's described as a creature covered in fur, with big eyes underlined by makeup, and face hair arranged in spikes around, so... Shouldn't he look like a giant koala?
Spoilers under the cut:
The Enterprise has to return prince Vikram to his native world of Angira, after ten years of education in the Federation. Angira is a rather primitive world, similar to Renaissance Europe as far as culture and technology goes. But the Federation expects that Vikram's acquired knowledge, as well as some offworld advisors, will help to develop the planet for its inclusion in the Federation. Prince Vikram is quite outlandish and self-deprecating, and more interested in fencing and having fun, than in politics. He doesn't believe he'll have any impact in Angira, since he's just the ninth son of the emperor, and doesn't expect to ever rule. His nickname, "Shadow Lord", shows precisely how his people see him as inconsequential. Nonetheless, Kirk leaves a reluctant Vikram in Angira, together with Spock (as astronomy advisor) and Sulu (as personal friend of the prince, given their shared interest in swordfighting). And the Enterprise departs for another mission in the meantime (leaving the two officers stranded in this turbulent society... What could possibly go wrong?).
Well, everything goes wrong. Shortly after the prince's arrival in the castle, Rahu, the leader of the elite imperial guard, organizes an uprising against the current emperor. His men slaughter everyone in the palace, including the whole royal family, assembled to welcome Vikram. The prince survives the assault by barricading himself inside a room, together with his tutor Bibil, Spock, Sulu and Urmi (Bibil's niece who works as a servant). From here, they escape the palace through a hidden tunnel in the chapel. In the catacombs, they discover a torture chamber that's seen some recent use. And it becomes clear that the late emperor wasn't any more beloved among the common folk, as he was among nobles like Rahu. His ill-advised reforms to "modernize" Angira have brought famine, poverty and pollution instead. For this reason, Urmi is very resentful against anything that smells of development and offworld contamination, so at first, she doesn't trust the prince or the Enterprise officers. Bibil, however, urges the prince to reach his childhood province of Kotah, still loyal to him, and to fight the usurper and become the new emperor, since he's the only survivor of the line, and the only one who can bring progress to Angira.
The fugitives come to the surface after a dangerous trip through the underground tunnels, where they were attacked by giant beetles and Bibil died. Then, Urmi guides them through the badlands to reach her village. Along the way, she starts warming up a bit towards her companions, but only helps them because they're the lesser of two evils, compared with Rahu. Upon reaching the village, they're assaulted by bandits, further showing how impoverished is Angira, and Spock is wounded. Also, the village council, distrusting offworlders, holds them hostage. Urmi manages to free Vikram and Sulu, but Spock is too weak to continue the journey, so he stays with Urmi's grandfather, Pagu.
Meanwhile, Rahu has convinced the swordmaster Lord Bhima to join his cause. Bhima is an honorable man, who's disgusted by the massacre, but believes that the prince would further destroy Angira's traditions. Thus, he agrees to work for Rahu, and goes out in pursuit of the fugitive prince. Just when the prince, Sulu and Urmi were crossing a bridge to reach Kotah, they're ambushed by Bhima's men. They fall to the river, but survive thanks to some Indiana Jones-like shenanigans. Bhima, noticing that Spock's not with them, decides to capture the Vulcan instead, as leverage.
Finally in Kotah, the prince manages to win the townsfolk loyalty, and gathers an army to meet Rahu's forces in the field. The battle is bloody, and at one point, Sulu is forced to take command of the troops, since Vikram is incapacitated. But in the end, the prince's army defeats Rahu's men and makes them flee in disarray. Rahu, however, is waiting for the prince with an ace up his sleeve. He presents the captured Spock and Pagu, and offers their lives in exchange for his freedom. Vikram knows he can't let Rahu loose again, but offers to settle matters with a personal duel instead. Rahu (as the good, coward villain he is) chooses Bhima to fight for him against the prince. But Vikram defeats his former swordmaster using a trick that he learned from Sulu. Before dying, Bhima realizes the error of his ways, and saves Vikram at the last moment from Rahu's treacherous attack. In the commotion, Rahu is killed.
Back in the palace, and with the Enterprise returned to Angira to pick up Spock and Sulu, Vikram is ready to become emperor. And he's working to modernize Angira in a responsible way. However, Sulu is worried about his future, since intervening in the final battle was a violation of the Prime Directive. (Well, I don't know why that was a worse violation than everything else Starfleet has been doing with Angira; it seems to me that pushing the planet in a certain direction is already a Prime Directive breach but... whatever). Kirk and Spock, of course, make an "imaginative reinterpretation" of the events, to let Sulu off the hook. For his part, Sulu has overcome a bit his romanticism about the past, and after so many misadventures, he decides that living in the seventeenth century is not that great...
Spirk Meter: 0/10*. Kirk and Spock barely interact, since Kirk only appears in the prologue and epilogue. And their interactions aren't very significant anyway.
On the other hand, McCoy and Spock are at each other's throats every second they're together, to pretty obsessive levels. And yet, after much pondering about the meaning of happiness, Spock concludes that his relationship with McCoy (the clash between opposites) is one of the things that brings "happiness" to his life.
*A 10 in this scale is the most obvious spirk moments in TOS. Think of the back massage, "You make me believe in miracles", or "Amok Time" for example.

bestie help i’ve been put in charge of choreographing a whole ass 1950’s style dance for school
omg i forgot to reply dawg😟😭 you probably thought i ghosted you. i'm so sorry my coochieballs😔😪
kotah be like:
Tumblr media
i'm on a trip right now so everyday i be going out 👹🔥
BUT HELLO MY DING DONG BELL I MISSED U SO MUCH GIRL😔😛🥰
Tumblr media
...WHERE THE FACK WERE U I THOUGHT U SEWERSLIDED YOURSELF 🥺💗?!
Tumblr media
A CHOREO?! OMG SLAY YOU'RE IN YOUR KPOP CHOREOGRAPHER ERA🔥😛
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TIME TO BREAK BACKS AND DIC-
but that's so stressful pookie omg i would die out of anxiety if i were you for real🤒...and its 1950's themed? girl the only things i remember from the 1950s are racism, segregation and marilyn monroe LMFAO☠ SEE I TOLD U TO NOT BECOME A MULTI PURPOSE MOULINEX APPLIANCE AND U DID NOT LISTEN😭😭 FACE THE CONSEQUENCES?!😋😜
but jokes aside my advice is to:
ਏਓ 1 . do some research about the 1950s for example: the aesthetics, the trends, the fashion and also the types of dances that were popular during that era and watch some old performances on youtube.
ਏਓ 2. learn some of the classical old school 1950s moves that were trendy but also add some modern touches yknow what i mean? to make it a lil cunty idk dawg😭☠you can also maybe add or combine multiple types of moves from different types of dances at that time into one choreo...so its a bit more unique and also inclusive because people of different ethnicities at that time probably danced differently or had a dance associated to their culture or background.
ਏਓ 3. honestly just do your best and also listen to the opinions and ideas of the other dancers.if you're not able to perfect a dance move or get it right just don't feel bad about it and find another one and DO NOT burn yourself out. also you stay hydrated bestie and take care of yourself both physically and mentally and rest well. be confident and put your whole badussy in what you're doing and serve cunt and don't stress too much unless you want to end up like my dad🔥🔥.
i hope you baila baila your despacito😩

FFXIVWrite Day 18 - A Fish Out of Water
As good of an Altais prompt this is, I've touched on her general out place feelings multiple times already so I decided to go back to Kito's early time on the First a little more with this one.
Don’t know my characters? Here’s a basic breakdown to help you out!
~
Kito could not sleep. Others would be quick to blame the unnatural light slipping through the cracks in his window shutters even in the middle of the night. But Kito knew the real reason.
It was too quiet.
Not in a way anyone else would understand. It had nothing to do with the actual sounds of the city. It was all in Kito’s head. Most people were used to silence accompanying their thoughts. Once, long ago, he would have even been grateful for it himself.
But Kito’s bond with Twintania had given them something unique. A constant sense of each others’ presence, feelings, and thoughts that was hard to explain in words. Their souls were connected, their minds shared one space for two identities. It was never silent in Kito’s mind. Even when they pulled as far apart as possible, Twintania’s emotions were always there on the edge of his mind. The ancient wyrms idle thoughts tended to drift slower than his own, the dragons’ different sense of time showing in her very thoughts. Kito had taken comfort in slowing down his own racing thoughts by matching the pace of his mind to hers.
Now though, his thoughts ran free without restraint. And there were so many of them with everything going on. He had been dragged off to an entirely different world, disconnected from Twintania by the distance across the rift, and his brother was here too somehow. Kito had expected the Scions. Not his insane brother Kotah.
Except Kotah wasn’t insane anymore? If that could be believed anyway. He and the Exarch both insisted he wasn’t like that after spending a couple years on the First. Kito found it hard to believe.
“Can’t sleep?” a voice interrupted Kito’s thoughts, causing him to yelp and fall out of bed in alarm.
Once he freed himself from the tangle of blankets that had come down with him, Kito was finally able to look up to see Ardbert watching him.
“Are you going to haunt me when I sleep every night?” Kito demanded with a hiss.
“You didn’t look very asleep to me. You had the look of a man lost in thought” Ardbert pointed out.
“My thoughts are a little lonely these days, is all” Kito admitted, climbing to his feet and remaking the bed.
“Ah yes, you share them all with that dragon don’t you?” Ardbert nodded as he remembered.
“Can you just leave me alone to sleep now?” Kito demanded.
“What’s really bugging you? I can’t do much these days, but I at least can listen” Ardbert tried again.
“Everything, alright? I’ve been dropped into an entirely different world, and for some reason of all the accidental summons the Exarch managed to pick up my crazy evil brother and everyone insists he isn’t evil anymore! And somehow Twintania was left behind despite him being here! The Exarch thinks she only wasn’t brought here because he was targeting a human, but that doesn’t make it any easier to deal with this mess”
“I think I get it. Not all of it, but some of it I get. I was in the same situation when I traveled to your world. Everything was strange and unfamiliar. Had my home not been threatened, I might have enjoyed the adventure. I think all of us would have if we had the chance to”
“Yeah, that I get. It’s exciting. I think I’d be more excited about this if it hadn’t come with a thousand problems” Kito sighed in agreement.
“Try to enjoy the journey anyway if you can. It’s what we adventurers do after all” Ardbert suggested.
“I plan to try. There were some interesting flowers I wanted to collect, so I might as well start with that. Are you able to leave me to sleep now? I do have a lot to do in the morning you know” Kito smiled.
“I’ll try not to haunt you in your sleep too much in the future” Ardbert agreed warmly.
Kito turned to adjust the bed one final time and when he glanced back over Ardbert was gone.
What a strange situation he was in. On a new world, being haunted by a ghost.
Ardbert was probably right to suggest looking at it as an adventure. If Kito could slip the extra circumstances to the back of his mind a little more, he might just enjoy this visit to another world.
