the fact that alvar hating sophitz while there’s little to no conceivable way he could know about sophitz having happened at all is one of kotlc’s lesser plot holes is astounding to me

i mean, i think they aren’t as many as they could be, because the matchmaking system and all doesn’t recommend elves to have more than one kid, so i think the poblation would grow consistently, but not like the human.
and for the school, i think it was implied in the first book that not all cities are talent based, so even if foxfire and exilillum have been presented like the only schools, they’re only for talented elves. cities like mysterium probably have normal schools with history and all that stuff!!
but yeah, it would be so interesting to know what’s the exact population of elves🫡🫡
Are we going to talk about how unfathomably dire the population crisis for elves should be?
5,000 years. No deaths. But also that doesn’t make sense because is that insinuating that elves started existing 5,000 years ago? Did they all get killed off somewhere? Fallon Vacker would remember, wouldn’t he? But he’s only Fitz’s 14th great grandfather so he should only been born 500 or so years ago. unless elves rarely ever had children but then that also wouldn’t make since. Because childbirth is supposedly easy for elves? Were elves interbreeding with humans? Is super strength an ability an elf can have and could that have helped build the pyramids?
In the past 5,000 years there have been nearly been 110 billion deaths which means that elves either don’t have the same population density, which again, doesn’t make sense, or like. I don’t know that’s the only option I’m seeing here.
elves would literally take over the planet in only about 500 years of their existence so I think something sinister is going on here that we haven’t fully grasped or something incredibly not well thought out has slipped through the cracks that we also haven’t fully grasped.
like Foxfire is the only school for the entire population of elves? Isn’t it either Foxfire Exillium? and what about the houses? How would the Floridians not find a castle in the bayous!!!? We have google earth.
I really just want answers. I don’t wanna be a hater.

hi there! working on something and i was wondering — do you by any chance have access to a list of all of kotlc’s unresolved plotlines? if not dw 🫶🫶 there are a lot lol
Hi! I'm not sure a list like that has been compiled before (and there's room for disagreement/interpretation) but I can try my hand at getting us started.
For the purpose of this list I'm thinking of them as yet unanswered questions. I'm not approaching this as unresolved plotlines as in the type of plot hole, since as I touched on here, the story isn't done so we can't truly have any. Anyway, they're listed in no particular order:
Elysian: What is it? Who is it?
Stellarlune: What is Lady Gisela's vision (and how does conjuring relate to it)? What exactly are Keefe's new powers? How is step 3 completed? What is Criterion?
Related, the Wrights: What, specifically, did Ethan study astrophysically? What did Gisela want from him? Where is Eleanor now?
Why/how did Prentice know to call swan song?
Secret identities: Mr. Forkle's, Blur's, Wraith's. Ruy, Umber, Trix.
Who/what are the Black Swan's Proxies?
What happened to Caprise Redek?
Pyrokinesis: Will the ban be lifted?
Talentless: Will their status be made equal?
What happened to Ro? This is connected to questions about Cadfael and the ogres' hierarchy/society, which Forkle thought were being targeted
Who is Sophie's biological father?
Does Sophie have any more abilities?
Trolls: How deep is their connection to Lady Gisela? Will they make another treaty? Will/how will they call on Sophie? What did Luzia do she regretted (might just be the troll experiments, might be more)?
Ruy: How is he after Tam's shadowflux attack? Why was he sent to Exillium?
What was Umber's backstory? What was Trix's?
What will become of Rayni? Will she join the crew? Fuck off?
Why is Tinker afraid of goblins and heat?
What is Livvy's ability?
What is Brant's last name?
How were Vika and Timkin officially matched? How did Timkin return to Foxfire?
Will the Song family reconcile?
Alden: Why was he denied a spyball? What memories/projects did he lose during his break? What other "unsanctioned investigations" has he conducted? What did Della inform on Alden to the council about?
This list is by no means exhaustive, so anyone is more than welcome to add onto it. I think I hit most of the big things though? At least I tried to.
Hope that helps!

Kotlc plotholes and theories bc what
There are so many, and I mean SO MANY fucked up lil plot holes in the Kotlc and just things that aren't really considered.
like sure yeah saying Einstein was wrong abt light for the purpose of light leaping was cool and all but ???? then why does it work. We've been to SPACE based off of these silly lil human theories and its certainly worked so wdym humans are stupid for thinking thats how light works. IT DOESNT NO WORK LIKE THAT AT THE VERY LEAST.
another thing, does the general elf population know humans have been to space? do they know about the moon landing?? do the councilors know? I assume the elves in charge of monitoring humans would know but honestly I don't think the would've felt the need to tell the councilors.

spyballs track registry records. the neverseen either don't wear registry pendants or disable them when they go to their hideouts (much like the black swan), therefore the spyball has nothing to pick up on when they are in neverseen mode. and before you bring them up, sophie's human parents do have registry records, even though they don't wear registry pendants. therefore the spyball does have something to track. spyballs aren't all-powerful gadgets with no limitations guys. they're technology just like any other kind and they have a logical explanation behind how they work and reasonable restrictions that dictate the parameters under which they can be utilized
wait lowkey why didn’t sophie just use her spyball to find out what’s happening with the neverseen?? like she knows several of their names?? brant, fintan, ruy, couldn’t she just have called for lady gisela to end all of the drama in the fourth book??

Hiiii so I recently came across your Lost Girl AU and I don’t have the time to scroll through everything to find all the info on the AU right now would you be able to just go over the basic info/lore of this AU? Sorry if this comes across as a bit snobby I can’t think of words right now. Love what little bits I have seen of the AU tho BYEEEEEE
oh dear, I hope you don't mind me dumping everything into your ask, I think this would probably be a valuable thing to have on my page!
The Lost Girl AU is a kotlc au that takes the original storyline and puts a more adult/young adult spin on it. I am also (along with my team) focusing on filling in the plot holes that come up with someone writes such a long series and (let's be honest) doesn't know what the ending is going to look like when they start.
there are two major changes i've made
Plot
The AU is fit into 3/4 'arcs' which will eventually be found on my Ao3.
arc 1, which is already started is called The Girl from Across the Waves and will follow Sophie through a modified events of the first three books.
(arc 2 will be books 4-6 and so on)
Sophie is 13 when she is kidnapped by a 'black swan' (neverseen) and in the panic, awakens her dormient telepathic abilities, calling out to Fitz, a strange boy she has befriended.
Fitz and Keefe had a falling out pre-fic. While Fitz is the golden child of the purest blood, Keefe is more guarded; scorned by adults, sharp as a thorn brush. he is as close to a faery as one might get, in this new world.
Linh and Tam were banished to a human realm (exillium does not exist in this AU).
Foxfire is a school for the nobility, it is much less like a traditional school, it is preparing the students for school for life as keepers, councilors, and regents. Each year there is a tournament and final exams - the bottom 10% are expelled from the school.
Sofitz does happen, however, the endgame ships in this AU are fedex, sokeefe, and marelinh.
Lore
the changes in KOTLC lore are the most important part. some of you might've guessed this from the designs i've shared, but elves have a very different history in The Lost Girl AU. I'm a big Celtic and Germanic mythology nerd and the elves in this au are the ultra eugenized versions of fae from the legends of long past.
once upon a time they were one with the natural world - their shapes fluid, their minds wicked. they were beings that resided entirely off magic. some of the ancients still bare remains of this time (Fintan's goat horns and cloven hooves). There are stories, passed down carefully between families, the Dinzee's used to be sly foxes, the Heks were once borne of unicorns, but the power they once had has dissipated.
The Council, in an attempt to maintain order and control, has placed each species, each ability user, into ranks and levels when once all lived together. Keeping ones bloodline pure is held in the highest regard. Marella suffers from this, as a elf/pixie hybrid, she struggles with discrimination everywhere she goes, Dex as well, but too a lesser extend (Kesler is probably a hyrbid, I'm not sure what from yet, thinking ogre?). Sophie is called a changling, in truth, she is something far grander.
the other species are going to be more mythological as well, gnomes are pretty much a slave race after the elves killed their ruling class. goblins are tricky little beasts, etc. I care about preserving the mischief of fae.
This is where Sophie comes in, the Black Swan created someone who is quite like the elves of old - she has no limits on her powers, and as she grows, she becomes more and more connects to the land of the Lost Cities. She learns to draw her power from it.

Only the gnomes have abilities. The gnomes trick elves into thinking THEY have abilities by using their own abilities while peeking out of the bushes. With people they respect the most, they either make sure their ability is well seen and gets them very respected, or they make them talentless, a sign that the gnome believes they are special on their own without any gnomish help. Calla grabbed a bunch of her family one day and said “we need the moonlark to be strong. We need abilities w, x, y, and z” and those gnomes follow her around in honor of Calla to make sure she has her abilities. They weren’t expecting the teleportation thing because that isn’t a gnomish ability she just got that from her alicorn DNA
i’m gonna be so real w y’all. sometimes i just pretend certain abilities don’t exist, like i think vociferators are stupid bc wow what do they even do, beguilers are like watered down mesmers (why not just have alina be a mesmer?), and i will only ever acknowledge descrying when i’m calling it fake (bc it is lol ;)

should I read kotlc?
i feel like its my duty to warn you about this series. it is good. it is bad. you might hyperfixate on it too much. soo many plot holes. each book is more than 400 pages and the longest book has more than 700 pages. if you find the plot of the first book interesting then yeah read it but again. beware
there's a lot of lgbt subtext in the series but it is also the straightest series ever

if you were the one (re?)writing the KOTLC series, what would change?
It depends on if I were the og writer or not.
If I'm rewriting it I would change a couple plot points, add some hcs, make it multi pov and slightly change the plot.
But if I were the og writer? It wouldn't end up anything like Shannon made it
I would take the basic plot, fix the many holes, and edit it.
I'd add more culture, tradition, trends, etc.
Probably change some species and how they run.
I'd change the architectural design in some areas.
I'd change most of the cast, edit people, merge people, and change their looks.
I would write it from multiple perspectives.
I would edit the way abilities work.
This isn't everything but I'd literally change sm about it if I were writing it originally. Like I like what we have but if I were doing it I would NOT have written it that way.

I mean, there’s also the part that if the elves really had the hundreds of years of matchmaking/genetic optimisation experience they claim to have *and* the DNA of every single elf on file (which the registry claims to) then Sophie wouldn’t be unmatchable in the first place because they’d easily be able to cross reference against genetic relatives to exclude them as matches without needing a name on a piece of paper.
If humans have figured out that capability with way less time in the DNA sandpit than elves, then surely elves are more than capable.
Which leaves a new, and potentially more significant, possibility.
I think it’s more likely that Sophie’s unmatchable status actually has nothing to do with her parents being undisclosed (maybe that excuse is just a cover, I dunno). Her genetic manipulations and the importation of cross-species DNA may have actually rendered her biologically incompatible with anyone full stop. Given the whole point of matchmaking is genetically optimised procreation, anyone unable to procreate would be unmatchable.
It doesn’t stop Sokeefe choosing each other. It may just mean no super over-powered Sokeefe-lings.
Y’all why has no one even mentioned the fact that if Sophie is unmatchable bc of her altered DNA, Keefe would be too?
